Title: Beach Boys Survivor #27 Winner: Good Timin'
Post by: pixletwin on March 26, 2014, 12:53:26 PM
Welcome back to a new round of BEACH BOYS SURVIVOR. Remember to be respectful of others opinions. Please don't spam the thread with too much opinionating (a little is ok  :D ).... and without further ado...

Quote
L.A. (Light Album) is the twenty-third studio album by The Beach Boys, released on March 19, 1979. Produced by Bruce Johnston, James William Guercio and the band itself, the album was The Beach Boys' first on CBS Records, and the first to feature contributions from Johnston since his departure from the band in 1972. Johnston was brought in when it became clear that the ailing Brian Wilson was in no fit state to produce the album, and has remained in the band ever since.

As usual vote for your least favorite track. The track with the most votes gets voted off.

Tally on March 28th

Good Timin'
Lady Lynda
Full Sail
Angel Come Home
Love Surrounds Me
Sumahama
Here Comes the Night
Baby Blue
Goin' South
Shortenin' Bread

Hands down my least favorite gets the axe because I DON'T DISCO.

Here Comes the Night.

Here Comes the Night. Don't share the negative sentiment for Sumahama. I'm kept interested with its Japanese quirks and pretty melody (though I'll concede Mike's vocal on the LBWL version is much better). Infinitely superior to the aforementioned disco track and aural NyQuil like Goin' South.

Exactly! Great to see some sane people around here. It's shocking that a lot of people actually consider Sumahama to be better than Here Comes The Night. It is after all IMHO (and I've said this before, and I'll say it again) the worst song the BB's ever did other than the songs off SIP.
I'd like to know why people dislike the disco Here Comes The Night so much (aside from the length, which is understandable). I think it's very well made, and doesn't deserve the hatred it gets around here!

I believe that people hate it because it's too far from the standard BB sound. Plus disco is a genre that possibly most of the hardcore BB fans hate, and that's why they like to hate HCTN. I've played it to people who don't mind too much about Beach Boys or disco music and they liked it.

That's interesting. I myself for the most part don't mind Disco. It's certainly not my favourite genre, and I don't care for a large percentage of it at all. If I was around in the late 70's, I would have considered it to be highly overrated, and the Disco lifestyle is...... "shudder".
But for the most part, it's tolerable, and I consider the disco Here Comes The Night to be one of the very best of the genre!
It's all subjective though, I suppose a lot of people may have different opinions on that

I don't exactly HATE here comes the night (disco), it's just I can't get over the length. A ten minute song has no place on a pop album, unless that's how long it takes to sing all the lyrics (cf. Dylan) but should be kept to the 12 inch single exclusion zone. It's particularly unacceptable on a record from the former kings of the killer two-minute single.
As for Sumahama, it's so teeth-rottingly oversweet it's almost admirable, like a big pop art sculpture of a marshmallow. I don't like it but it's an interesting curio, and it served its purpose as a sop to Mike Love's ego.

I just unsuccessfully trolled Jarhead or got trolled BY him, I can't figure out which. Either way, I now deserve to die. Suicide emoticon please??

OK, I'm quoting this one, but this applies to both you and Jarhead... both please stop firing each other up.

@ halblaineisgood: even if it's meant to be funny - aggressive comments are not wanted here. Ignore, or take it to PM's
@ Jarhead: I understand your response, but be aware that by replying this way you're not exactly helping to cool things down. Again the advise is ignore, or PM's. and in case of a complaint report it to the mods.

Full Snail.

I implore ye who feel Goin' South is a little on the boring side to have another listen while in a mellow mood, and picture the swallows leaving Capistrano, and be moved by Carl's yearning vocal during the snow drifts interlude.

If you have a HiFi rig that lets you fold-down to mono, hit the button and the cheesey solo sax will disappear down the back of the mix.  It's a great ballad with plenty on offer, and maybe pales in it's post Baby Blue sequencing.

Still think Sumahama should have went in the first round....

Anyway as for my next vote, it's a choice between Goin' South and Shortenin' Bread.

One's silly and repetitive but fun and goofy, and the other's a one-way trip to Dullville.

My vote goes to Goin' South.

"Lady Linda"  Holding on tight, but for how much longer.  Those of you who voted off "Shortenin' Bread" must not have seen Carl, Mike and Brian(pounding away on the Grand) do it Live.  Berkeley 1979, the crowd went pogo-nuts in the sandbox*.  Back then Brian chain smoked on stage, but set it in the ashtray so he could give it a shout.  After the song was over I yelled to Carl, Do "How She Boogalooed It."  He noticed, but just smiled down with a "Get a Grip" look.
.
EDIT:  *I meant literally a huge sandbox.  Don't want to confuse those who never got the chance to go there.  The Greek Theatre, U. C. Berkeley was built to have the whole floor section filled with sand, especially Great for a Beach Boys Show.  Until the 90's (when they turned it into Gold Circle seating for most shows) it was a General Admission area (rarely with seats) for the real fans who waited up to two hours to get up close and personal with the acts.  It was the Home of The Bread and Roses Festivals - I say was, not sure if they still have those.  It is The Best outdoor arena in the Bay Area.

Full Sail might not be the most exciting piece out there, but the lyrics are quite elegant and the theme is appropriate for a late 70's beach boys. It fits with Good Timin and all that, more so that Lady Lynda which is J.S. Bach's worst song ever.

I love every song on this album, and now we are down to the cream of the crop. Hard to vote at this point.

I'll have to go with Baby Blue

You seem to spend your whole time voting for what are clearly the better songs from these albums? i.e. My Diane, Baby Blue, etc. Is it an attention-grabbing act or are these genuine choices?

Lady Lynda

There's a much, much better bootleg version which ditches the over-production and the classical intro/outro, and instead has a long fade on the gorgeous 'ooh lady won't you lie lady' reframe. It's far nicer.

Like Eric, I'm struggling to pick just one this time around. Unlike Feelsflow I can't vote for a song on the basis that they did it better live; unlike Disney Boy I can't vote off a track on the basis that there's a better unfeleased live bootleg version, when we're supposed to be voting for released album tracks on heir own merits (that's just attention seeking! :lol ).

And I wish Goin' South was still in the pot as I think that track's beautiful.

Gonna go with Full Sail as I think that would be the first track I'd start skipping if I had them all playing in a continuous loop on a desert island for a month!

Um. They are genuine choices. For the first four rounds, I voted for Shortenin bread. I vote for my least favorite every time. I don't vote strategically like some do, and I definitely don't vote for attention. L.A. is my 2nd favorite Beach Boys studio album of any era, and I love every song on it. At this point, with these final 6, it's a matter of which song I love but not as much as the others...

Fair enough. I know you're on record as saying L.A. is one of your very favourite BB albums (and good for you, it's great!), so just surprised to see you voting for Baby Blue which is generally considered one of highlights - if not the highlight - of the album. It's just surprising to me that someone who rates L.A. so highly wouldn't therefore be overly keen on Baby Blue. It's like someone who loves Pet Sounds not being overly keen on God Only Knows. I'm not saying it's not allowed - just that it's surprising.

Cool, yeah I'm my opinion, though, L.A. is definitely an album full of highlights, but what the highlights are definitely differs from fan to fan. Much like Surf's Up. I can think of at least 5 tracks on Surf's Up that could be hotly contested favorites. Same with L.A...I can see at least 4, if not 5 or 6, that would be very popular with fans. Baby Blue for me, was kind of a grower for me, whereas all the other remaining tracks had an immediate impact on me.

It's a problem with the nature if the polls. It's easy to interpret a vote as an expression of dislike but that's not the case: here, a vote against one song is, in fact, more a vote in favour of the remaining songs.

Fair point.  I was in such a good mood yesterday - that can get you in trouble.  Too many good memories, just thought I'd share one.  Wasn't really how much I like one track or another.  I'm voting on the basis of the studio track.  Everyone has a right to their opinions.  I would have certainly voted off "Shortening Bread" before "Goin' South."  After "Lady Lynda" I won't know were to go.  When you have so many great, and important (the Dennis tracks) to vote off - it gets tough.  Got a soft spot for all of these tracks.  Missing Carl and Dennis plays into it at this point of their catalogue.  Many of these albums have been difficult to treat as a game.  What's been fun about playing Survivor is that as we go through each set of albums, I focus and listen to ones I don't play as often.  I play L.A. often.

Fuuuuuuul Saiiiiillllll snored it's self away. (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

Tally on April 7th

Angel Come Home
Love Surrounds Me
Baby Blue

Round#1 - Here Comes the Night March 28
Round#2 - Sumahama March 30
Round#3 - Goin' South April 1
Round#4 - Shortenin' Bread April 3
Round#5 - Full Sail April 5

My vote for least favorite has to be Love Surrounds Me. It's just a smidgen less boring than Full Sail.

Lady Liberty

P.S. I don't get the votes for Love Surrounds Me. IMHO it's the best song off this album and is Dennis's last masterpiece!

Angel Come Home.  It's a case of a song I really like, but its slickly produced background vocals pull it down a notch.  I think I would love this more in virtually any album before it, because I'm not a fan of how the Bruce-produced albums work some of the vocals.

Count me among the people rooting for "Love Surrounds Me" to win this round.

Interesting...I see a winner emerging.  Unless there's some other reason nobody is trying to vote off "Baby Blue."
.
All of these are deserving of the final.
a gentle spring breeze of a vote for
"Angel Come Home"
Come On!  That leaves plenty of great Dennis songs.  Good luck "Good Timin'"

Not a big deal voting for Angel Come Home, considering it is the weakest remaining song. And technically it's a Carl song with Denny vocals

Welcome back to the FINAL ROUND of BEACH BOYS SURVIVOR.

Love Surrounded me with 20 votes. (20) (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

As usual in the final round of Survivor, we VOTE FOR OUR FAVORITE TRACK!!!!

Tally on April 11th

Good Timin'
Angel Come Home
Baby Blue

Round#1 - Here Comes the Night March 28
Round#2 - Sumahama March 30
Round#3 - Goin' South April 1
Round#4 - Shortenin' Bread April 3
Round#5 - Full Sail April 5
Round#6 - Lady Lynda April 7
Round#7 - Love Surrounds Me April 9

Angel Come Home has some cool things about. The verse melody is great. But I don't feel like it's the greatest.

Good Timin' is a Beach Boys classic. I do prefer the version with Dennis on main vocals. It doesn't give me the chills the way....

...Baby Blue does. Carl's vocals are soulful and ethereal. The lyrics are heart warming. When Dennis first comes in singing "Late at night I feel the whole world sleeping" it just gives me a thrill that not many other Beach Boys songs do.

BABY BLUE.

Good timin by a thousand miles.

Baby blue has some beautiful singing but drags on a bit.  It it was like a minute shorter i'd enjoy it more.

Angel come home is nice but wished it rocked a little harder.

Good timin is a flat out classic.

The problem with Good Timin' is simple: It just doesn't seem finished.

It's got some excellent singing, but it's a little too short and doesn't feel like a complete song.

So it should be a landslide for Baby Blue. But at least Baby Blue is still ahead of the others!

BABY BLUE

With. Out. A. Doubt. It's a masterpiece.

Sure, Good Timin' is lovely and full of great harmonies, but it really doesn't compare to Baby Blue which is just such an amazingly crafted, beautiful piece of work. It's just absolutely stunning. When I first played it to my girlfriend, she cried.

It really will be pretty shitty if we get to the end of these Survivor rounds and Dennis doesn't win a single one. He was such a talented and original songwriter.

Agreed all the way. It was sad that he lost the 20/20 round, tragic that he lost the Sunflower round, and absolutely devastating that he lost the Odds and Ends Round. If Denny doesn't win this round, I don't know what my reaction will be...
Baby Blue is still not quite as good as Love Surrounds Me (Baby Blue is the second-best song off this album), but it sure as hell deserves to win now!

As I said earlier, Good Timin' has beautiful singing, but it just feels incomplete. It's got nothing on Baby Blue.

simple.
I want Carl to win.

SO tempted to change my ineffectual vote for Angel Come Home to Good Timin'............just to stir the pot...

But I won't, on principle. I vote for the song I like best, period.

Vote ends now (perhaps temporarily).

I count both Baby Blue and GOod Timin' at 21 votes each.

I'll recount.

A draw would be interesting - have we even taken into account what happens in the event of a draw? I think it should just be that BOTH songs go through to the final.

This was an interesting album for a Survivor thread. It really got BLOODY at the end. Just how I like it!  :lol

Quote

The best song won.

Baby blue is pretty, but IMO is a bit long and drags a bit.  After repeated listens i find myself getting bored.

Good timin' on the other hand gives me pure bliss every time i hear it.. Carl harmony perfection.

I think Forever and WIBNTLA should be representing Dennis in the final survivor round.

Neither of those won their respective rounds. Baby Blue was Dennis' only shot.

Ultimately 21 people agreed with me and 22 people agreed with you about which was the better song.

That's the game. It can be a bit brutal for some. :'(

Yeah, I'm over it now.  :lol

This kind of reaction is exactly why I stopped voting back in the early rounds. Christ, when you can't even like what you like, it takes all the fun out of being a part of something like this. I never thought I would be considered "Utterly lame" for liking Good Timin'. Gotta love this place!

Yep. By far the best songwriter of the Beach Boys in the 70's was Dennis. Yet he lost every single bloody round!
What more proof do you need that Dennis is underrated?

amazing isn't it?  ::)  even if I wasn't so much of a Dennis fan as I am now I would still think something was wrong with this.  I can honestly understand why he lost in the beginning with Friends and 20/20 (he was just starting out then) but by this point...

Yeah, maybe (much as I love his songs on them). But this? This is fucking disgraceful. Dennis is rolling around in his grave because of these results.

But I expected it. I foresaw Good Timin' winning this round many rounds earlier, due to the voting trend. Sadly, I was accurate. I wish this round went a day longer so some extra votes could go to Baby Blue.

And I'm pretty sure there were a few spite votes against Baby Blue by voters who normally don't vote!

Exactly. There should be a rule where spite votes are discounted. Only problem is, it's not easy to tell which one is a spite vote or not.
But remember the 20/20 round where SMiLE Brian voted against All I Want To Do? That was an obvious spite vote. He never voted before, and he never voted since.

Are you kidding me? Dennis wouldn't give one solitary sh*t about any of these polls.

You're really blowing this out of proportion. They're just songs. You can still listen to them.
It's just a silly little contest among fans. It's not the final word on what song is better. It's just a collection of opinions.

It's very sad that the fans say None of Dennis's songs are worthy of winning the poll.
And I think Dennis had low self-esteem with his songwriting, correct me if I'm wrong. He was very upset that no one in the band cared about his songs much. And it looks like it's the same with the fans  :'( :'( :'(

you're right he did have a low self-esteem and the band's jealousy towards him didn't help either.  Remember they threatened to kick him out of the group if he proceeded with the POB tour (he didn't have the budget anyway but still) the fact that they did that is sick  >:(

It was off by one vote. A track 'winning' doesn't render all the others vastly inferior. Furthermore, as said by Mr. Waves, this whole Survivor thing isn't intended to be the all-time final consensus on the best Beach Boys tracks - it isn't written in stone, it's just a bit of fun, and certainly wouldn't have any band members rolling in their graves.

My introduction to Baby Blue was the "Bamboo" CD put together by Dan Addington.

At the time LA Light was out of print and when....a couple years later I got to hear it...I much preferred the "Bamboo" version.

Always found the LA version too sterile...still my fav song on this album though..

But in the 70's Dennis's work surpassed Brian's easily. If it was the 60's, you have a point. But as Retrokid says, the 70's was Dennis's decade, just as the 60's was Brian's decade, the 80's was Carl's decade, and the 90's onwards belong to Mike.

Brian is one of the greatest songwriters of all time but that doesn't mean that all of his songs were better than Denny's songs.  I think it's safe to say that Brian's songs weren't as "genius" as they were from the mid to late 60s and early 70s by this point in time.

I bet he could've if he would've had more confidence.  Everybody gave Brian a big pat on the back in everything he did every chance they got, meanwhile Denny's stuff got rejected and criticized.

I know this is all in fun but it just seems odd to me that not one of his songs has won a single round ???  I mean he was an extremely talented guy who surprised everyone (he went from someone who was just going along for the ride to a prominent songwriter and singer)

People love Brian`s songs which takes nothing away from Dennis. Forever, for example, is a lovely song but This Whole World was a worthy winner.

In this round Good Timin` is a very highly rated song so it`s not exactly the equivalent of Baby Blue being voted out before Here Comes the Night...

How could this be?!

TBH probably cause of you, spite votes killed it...and your reaction with the whole mess of emoticons proves it

^^^^ pretty much this^^^^^

that doesn't make it right.

Pixletwin, what is your opinion on Spite votes? Would you count them as fair and legitimate, or unfair and illegitimate?

I don't think people should do spite votes, but I suppose it's kind of in the same category as those who switch their votes strategically.

Ultimately it's all in fun, so I wouldn't take it too seriously. But I wish people hadn't spite voted. With switch voting I think it doesn't actually change the final vote. It's impact is limited. But a spite vote can louse up the purity of a game. But again, I hope people aren't taking these games quite that seriously.  :3d

Well I hate to see people leaving the game. I feel like leaving this thread open is just going to get people angry so I'll just temporarily close it. We'll be playing new rounds next week. We have the 80's ahead! So I foresee a fun and drama-free survivor.

I agree. If some folk are finding the survivor game is insulting their sensibilities and frustrating what they perceive as their sense of justice, maybe they should be the ones taking a break. Stick around thedumbangel. We need people with a variety of backgrounds and opinions. That's what makes the game fun. Hopefully everyone can dig that.

I think the Dennis not winning anything needs some perspective.  For me there are two albums where Dennis contributes the best song (Friends and L.A.), but its not like theyre slam dunk decisions.  Sunflower seems like the other option that has a lot of weight, and Forever is a good choice too even if I prefer This Whole World and All I wanna do.  Only 4 of the 7 70s albums have Dennis songs, two of which were close calls.  It doesn't seem to me like some obvious winner were upset, because I don't believe there is an album where a Dennis song obliterates all else.

I was going to vote for "Baby Blue" just to give Denny that illusive win, when I started thinking about how "some of you" were talkin' up this idea that a win is not a win unless the winner wrote the song - not good enough to just sing it...technicalities.  What about the Cover Versions?  Someone singing another members songs - quite common.  Started me wondering about other rounds, other records.  These votes go so strange.  Tracks I've loved since release just get trashed...15 Big Ones comes to mind.  L.A. is, for me, a near Carl solo album.  Not uncommon for one of the albums to focus on one member or the other.  There is a reason Dennis asked Carl to sing his songs.  Carl wasn't on the side-line holding up his hand going, "Me, Me."  These choices were thought out, just like when Brian did it.  This "spite" angle now comes in as the most recent "tactic" - like we need to feel sorry for Dennis, or Heaven forbid those who think their fandom is more important than who (Who?).  Spite?  Get off of It!  I voted for the song I liked Best of the Final choices.  simple.  I believe I did vote for "Cuddle Up" - but you may have noticed by my voting pattern that I like Carl's voice a whole lot more than Dennis' from any era.  Carl's writing is as good too.  I was crushed when "Girl Don't Tell Me" didn't win.  Surprised it wasn't more cherished.  Didn't even make it to the Final.  How many of you were disappointed?  I wasn't taking names...and not the only hammer to fell one of my favorites.  There are two tracks on L.A. that I like better than "Baby Blue":  "Goin' South" and "Full Sail" - even "Love Surrounds Me" - those did not make it to the Final Round.  I don't recall calling anyone out, as "fans of The Beach Boys" claimed they were boring, slow, whatever...Cause this is just a GAME we are playing to pass the day away.  How could pixletwin possibly figure out if someone WAS making a spite vote?  Is he the Mentalist?  And, not to single you out (I'm not wanting these arguments that belong in PMs, if anywhere, to go any further), Rei You should EDIT that reply #375, to at least one emoticon.  What will future guests and posters think in years to come?  Folks like you who look at the past of this Great Forum looking for Threads to pull up from the depths.  They're gonna' find That?  But then how will they know which you was you you might ask.  It's not too difficult, we all have Post History.  I could just PM you again...but that doesn't seem to be working.  You are not a troll in my book, but please tone-it-down.  It gets hard on my hand having to scroll down half a page to get to the next admonishment. ;D
Or at least go with the Dennis quote au bord de ma ch`ere (how do you get ` to post over the e?) found.
Let there be peace.  We still have many Rounds to go.  Game=Fun, that's all it is.  Your favorites will always be in your hearts.

1. Lady Lynda
2. Love surrounds me
3. Full sail
4. Angel come home
5. Good timin
6. Here comes the night
7. Baby Blue
8. Goin south
9. Sumahama
10. Shortenin bread

But really I love every song on this album!

I disagree. The survivor rounds are focused on Beach Boys albums, not Solo albums. It's too late to start with them, as Bruce Johnston's and David Marks's solo albums predate Dennis's. If you're going to do one, you may as well do them all.

Honestly I'd just be happy (As well as Retrokid, Disney Boy and all other Dennis fans around here) if a proper Dennis song wins at least once.

Well, you see, you could put up a lot of people against Brian Wilson (even people more talented than Dennis), and Brian would still come out on top.
The guy is just one of the most musically talented people to ever cut a record. That's no mark against Dennis, it's just how it is.

Why is it at all sad that Brian Wilson, the Beach Boys best and most prolific songwriter, has taken most of the wins? Remember, this is an OPINION BASED POLL to see what songs majority of hardcore fans like. Every song listed as a winner is AMAZING!

This doesn't mean you can't listen to the music anymore, or Dennis is any less good, so why moan about it so much?

Aside from Bruce, Dennis is the only member of the classic line-up of the Beach Boys to not have a song win a Survivor round. Considering his talent, this is plain sad.
Majority of the people on here much prefer Brian's music. Why can't you just accept that?

It's really not that big of a deal.

I'm also glad Brian's taking the lion's share. He deserves it, but is it too much for Denny to win just once?
I honestly think that most of the songs by Dennis that are very worthy of winning were either released on POB or went unreleased.

Songs like River Song, Carry Me Home, Thoughts of You, and My Love Lives On could easily be winners if they were released on a BB's album.

My Love Lives On is a excellent song, it has seriously grown on me. And it will be on the upcoming Odds And Ends round. Who knows, it might win

Wow, so those are all the winners from the survivor threads, eh?  That's really cool.  B-tchin' album right there.

Question -- there's a few that are singles only, right?  What's the deal with those?  How'd they make the cut?

I have nothing more to add to this thread, the winner is the winner. Good Timin' is still a great song, and it's definitely in the top 3 of this album.

And it has come to my attention that there are still Denny songs on the upcoming Odds and Ends round, so thankfully It's Not Too Late! (Pun intended)

There are indeed...oh and Still I Dream of It  >:D
We have a winner for that round already..... ;)

Took a listen to Still I Dream Of It recently and was not impressed one bit. At best it's a "Meh".

Oh, and It's Over Now is Awful.

That's sure to get everyone on your side.

Whilst its fair to say Love Surrounds Me goes a little overboard at times, it's always nice to see someone so deeply passionate about the Beach Boys and Dennis. And hey, I agree: Still I Dream of It and, especially, It's Over Now aren't much cop. I don't particularly rate either. Brian at his most boring and uninteresting.

Agreed with Still I Dream Of It. Though that's not the reason why I dislike It's Over Now.
Carl sounds drunk, the production is awful, Musically bland and uninteresting...
Basically put, everything that Gabo seems to hate about Dennis songs, bar the 70's rock and sexuality. A boring, sappy love song. Worse than some of Bruce's songs in that category!

I like the speed corrected version of It's Over Now on MIC.  The slower version on the GV box is horrible IMO.

Still i dream of it is pretty cool too as long as I can get by the "time for supper now" line which is cringeworthy.

I wouldn't say it's that cringe-worthy. When people are depressed, often times it's manifested in eating - which is what's going on here.

I think that dinner line is all about setting the scene. When I listen to the demo I imagine Brian in his comfortable home noodling at the piano as his maid prepares dinner. Brian's not much of a braggart and I imagine the casual reference to his maid is his way of telling us: "I'm in the middle of a pretty cushy situation". This makes the song all the more powerful for me. Even surrounded with material comforts a lot of people don't have, he yearns for something more, something different to end his unease.

Interesting perspective, Q.  I see it as nothing more than a stark omission of his terrible mental condition.  Sloughing around in bunny slippers or something.  Loosely tied bathrobe, unable to figure out what to do.  Impatient yet immobile.

Tortured.  Unshaven and scribbling meaningless, mundane entries into his diary that tell us nothing and everything -- Got up today.  Ate food.  Still alive.

Angel Come Home is not from Bambu. It's a Carl Wilson song sung by Dennis. The Zoo version is pretty good too. The video is cool too. It has an Old West theme to it.

It trips me out how bruce produced such great records b4 he was a beach boy and the when he came back in 78 after bein gone six years he produces a couple of the weakest albums in the BBs catalog.. dont get me wrong I like bits and pieces of the Light album and Keepin the summer alive but the fact that the BBs started getting hits on the adult contemporary charts and remaking their classic Here comes the night into a disco song really showed how desperate they were at that time. Love you was such a raw album, punk rock to me, MIU had its moments but gets such a bad rap...but look at the new direction rockNroll took starting in 77- the Ramones came along and revitalized rock music/ Rocket to Russia was such a masterpiece and the influence of the BBs in those songs was beyond prevalent right?

The lyric just sounds ridiculous in that melody. It's also really, really bad as an opening lyric. The opening lines ruin the song for me.

In fact, yes. Perfect example. Bob Dylan is one of the greatest lyric writers of all time. If Brian ever wrote something to match "It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)", I've never heard it.

The replies on here are hilarious sometimes. People make ridiculous remarks undermining brian wilsons writing on a beach boys thread and Im the weirdo for disregarding the typical bs thats commonly seen.  And when were the monkees involved in this topic? Its hilarious and sad when people get irked any time the beatles are regarded without praise. A mediocre english pub band gets discovered by a brilliant producer , gets mass marketing and polished up enough to be seen as the greatest act in showbiz but all the substantial details are eschewed... I dont undermine the beatles, from 64 to 66 they made some good tunes but the infectious addictive quality of the beach boys was and is beyond definition. The only other rock acts of the 60s that came close were jan&dean and the 4 seasons... the british invasion spawned some great records but I wouldnt worship any of em.. Just how is the post-66 Beatles stuff bad?
And you seem to dismiss the many great British bands of the era (besides the Beatles and the Who). Like the Rolling Stones, the Animals, the Yardbirds, etc. In their own way they were all brilliant as well.
