Title: Beach Boys Survivor #26 Winner: My Diane
Post by: pixletwin on March 26, 2014, 12:50:19 PM
Welcome back to a new round of BEACH BOYS SURVIVOR. Remember to be respectful of others opinions. Please don't spam the thread with too much opinionating (a little is ok  :D ).... and without further ado...

Quote
"M.I.U. Album is the twenty-second studio album by The Beach Boys, released on October 2, 1978 on Brother/Reprise. Recorded during a fraught time for the band, only Mike Love, Al Jardine, and Brian Wilson appear consistently throughout the album, with Carl and Dennis Wilson audible on only a few tracks. Produced by Al Jardine and songwriter Ron Altbach, the album's title stems from Maharishi International University in Fairfield, Iowa, where the majority of the album was recorded.
Reflecting on the album in 1992, Mike Love noted, "It was too democratic. Everybody coming into it with their song, which is okay. It's like if you have an album and have a hit song on it, and it's very commercially viable. Doesn't it make sense to have another song that would also be commercially viable? And a third and a fourth."

As usual vote for your least favorite track. The track with the most votes gets voted off.

Tally on March 28th

MIU isn't bad because thee songs are pure shite, they are simply so bland and soulless. One has to be a fan to be able to tell them apart. They are mostly pop ditties without substance but even the pretentious Winds Of Change feel empty, despite some fine harmonies.

It just stinks average because it is average. It doesnt even feel like a Beach Boys album to me because it borders to satiring their early career.

12 Smilers knew Peggy Sue enough to vote her out. (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

As usual vote for your least favorite track. The track with the most votes gets voted off.

Match Point of Our Love

Yup, that's exactly what I'm doing (and have been since the first round!)  My Diane just does not fit the mood of the album, and also it's just not a great song in general.  And I consider myself a big Dennis fan (writing and vocals).  Interestingly enough, Matchpoint is my favorite on the album!  I know that voting for My Diane in these first few rounds is futile...there's no way it will be voted off in the first half.  In fact, it will probably be win (or at least be top 3).  But just playing by the rules...it's my least favorite, and I don't want to vote strategically.

Funny to see all the Matchpoint discussion. Actually I hear what many of you are saying regarding its better qualities. The melody and vocal performance especially are not half bad, I quite agree. But those lyrcis... I'm not a lyrics guy normally but something this bad just really is hard to look past.

She's Got Rhythm has an awful Brian vocal but compositionally I think it's the most successful new-oldie on the album - when I heard it, I actually thought it was a 50s cover (despite it referencing disco dancing  ;D). I think American Spring could have done a great gender swap of the track, for some reason I can easily hear a Marilyn vocal singing "saw a foxy boy out on the floor".

And a third and a fourth."

Match Point of sh*t.

A year or 2 before this steamer was fermented, an Australian group had a massive hit with a song depiciting the end of a love affair using a cricket metaphor (Howzat, 1976).

Strange days indeed.

Round#40: FINAL SURVIVOR

I'm in favor of this, but do you think we should add Stars and Strips? I'm opposed to it, it's just a Country styled remake album of some of their hits.
And is there going to be rounds coinciding with Super Survivor about the songs that was first voted off, so we can also vote for the worst Beach Boys song of all time?

I reckon 2nd place songs would be more reasonable. TM Song, Here Comes The Night and Mama Says don't really need another chance to try and win. How about Beach Boys Escaper. We take the bottom song from each round. We then vote off our favourite song of the bunch until we find the worst Beach Boys song.

Yeah, but it's not like they're actually going to win. They're just voted off as "Favourite Remaining Track" until there's the final 3 of the worst BB's songs (which I presume will include Summer Of Love). At which point you can vote for the "Least Favourite Song"
And instead of the tracks first voted off of SDVII, ASL, and Today!, I say use the songs voted off next, because the ones voted off first aren't actual songs.

Am I misunderstanding, or did you just contradict yourself? You say 2nd place songs are the better idea, then go on to say that last place songs are a better idea...?

They're separate ideas. I thought that the worst songs would be a fun idea to see which song Smiley Smilers hate the most.

Glad to hear you are feeling better...Now On With The Show!
I like the last four (five really) about equal, so no vote for me this round.  To say, would it just be considered a "spite" vote - cause it would be for "My Diane"...it's going to the final anyway.
I would request that you open the comments back up on Survivor #27.  Too often it's becoming common for Threads to be closed by the time I catch-up to the end.  Are you aware that some of the post Thread Titles have been altered to:  Rightful Winner:  "Baby Blue"?
I voted for the song that I thought was the best of what was left to pick from.  I don't do many polls, but if I did you would know my favorite songs from that album are "Full Sail" and "Goin' South" more than "Baby Blue."  I think it's one of their best 70's long-players, Much better than M.I.U. - Brian's involvement or not.  I don't share a lot of what I think about favorites, because so many are favorites.  This is my favorite band, and I don't think much of what they did was sub-standard.  Again, open back up the comments on #27.  This Is just a Game, if some want to take it so personally - then don't let them have the final word.  peace Will

Welcome back to the FINAL round of BEACH BOYS SURVIVOR.

Sweet Sunday Kinda Love. Gone on Monday. (12) (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

I like Brian's smooth vocal on Matchpoint, but ultimately the disco-vibe is a turn off.

I actually like Brian's vocals on She's Got Rhythm too. Fun to sing in the car by myself.  :P

But my favorite is My Diane. EVERYTHING IS WRONG AND NOTHING IS RIGHT!!!!

My Diane:  heartfelt (if sometimes lazy) lyric, heartfelt vocal.  So why has this never grabbed me like it does others?  I don't know, but it just seems plodding to me.  It will win anyway, and it may well be the BEST song of the three.

Matchpoint of Our Love:  Nice melody and great Brian vocal that (almost) makes you forgive the clunky tennis metaphors.  Lyrically the bridge is as right to the point as "My Diane."  This would have fit right in the airwaves in '78 with groups like America and Starbuck.  Which makes it unremarkable production-wise.

She's Got Rhythm:  Brian's opening would-be Frankie Valli vocal still makes me wince all these years later, along with the disco lyrics.  But listening to it again, doggone it, it's kind of fun, and the chorus is catchy in the best kind of Brian Wilson way.

Of the three, the latter two would be my "favorites," so I'll go with the better vocal...

Matchpoint of Our Love

Never been a huge fan of Matchpoint despite the smooth vocal by Brian.  I like it better now then when i first heard it many years ago but it's still not in my top 3.

I really like She's Got Rhythm.. I dig the falsetto and the bit at the end "..never will forget her!" with the harmonies and everything.  Very catchy.

But..  gotta go with My Diane.  Emotional song and powerful performance by Dennis.  I'm sure Marilyn would've picked this one as the winner as well.

My Diane is a pretty okay song stymied into a plodding borefest because of the production. That rough mix that may or may not be doing the rounds shows it could have been a lot more interesting. Hopefully one day this is given the MiC Rock and Roll Music treatment. That would probably result in the best thing to come out of the M.I.U. sessions, but as it stands, I've gotta vote for Matchpoint.

So, I just listened to M.I.U. Album for the first time.
Not nearly as bad as people make it out to be.

Anyway, "She's Got Rhythm" is great fun. It's def an ass-shaker.
"My Diane" is certainly a good song, and I like that Brian went off in this darker direction. Nice lead by Dennis, too.
However, when "Matchpoint of Our Love" came on, something inside me said "Oh, f*ck yes."

I will go with my gut: "Matchpoint of Our Love".

She's Got Rhythm. Brian's vocal doesn't sound pretty, but it's still a great, catchy song.

I'll admit it now, I love Matchpoint, and I am seriously glad it's in the finals.
But I still prefer My Diane, but honestly not by too much.

She's Got Rhythm is an awesome song to blast while driving on a summer day--can't explain it.

Matchpoint is the one of the most non-Beach-Boys-sounding songs in the canon, and they really pulled off the disco-feel.

But my vote must go to one of the only Beach Boys songs that can make me cry:

My Diane

(I freakin' love M.I.U., even though it has a number of duds on it.)

Only 6 smilers figures that She actually had Rhythm. (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

11 Smilers were strung out on Match Point of Our Love. (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

But there can be only one.... with 18 smilers voting for....
