Title: Boxsets We Would Like To See Within The Next 5 Years
Post by: rab2591 on January 11, 2014, 11:22:48 AM
What are your ideas for any future boxset releases? Or even just double-disc albums full of rarities? After TSS and Made In California, can we expect anymore boxsets?

I'd like to see a Summer Days, Summer Nights/Today boxset - full of backing-track-only, vocals only, stereo/mono remasters, alternate takes, studio sessions, etc. A 1967-1976 boxset featuring a stereo Wild Honey, remastered Friends album.

What do you guys want to see, in terms of boxset/rarity releases, in the coming years?

I'd like to see everything on Boyd's laptop, as described in the latest ESQ, released as a 5,386 CD box set next week.

With a bonus disc.

I've always would have loved to see another Hawthorne CA type compilation, except done a bit better. More coverage of post-1969 stuff, less filler of obvious stuff like stereo mixes of stuff from early albums, but more acapellas and backing tracks are always welcome. I don't expect another great box set for awhile but I'd at least love another comp of stuff. Seems like they release something new (even if its another hits comp) every year so hopefully this summer brings something else great.

Sunflower Sessions deluxe set - stereo/matrix mixes plus outtakes and vocal/instrmental tracks

Surf's Up ditto

Holland ditto

The Complete Brian Wilson Productions 1962-1997

"Rarities" box, collecting all of odd/one-off/non-album tracks.

Last Wilson Standing 1986-201? comprehensive BW solo box, 4CDs minimum.

Raiders of the Lost Archives - unreleased tracks 1962-2012

Some high quality late 70s - early 80s material might be nice... perhaps some sort of extended edition of Adult/Child? I'd love to hear some great tracks like Stevie and Oh Lord properly.

I think it would be great to get a Lei'd in Hawaii box set, probably 2 or 3 discs.

Both of the live shows, the rehearsals, and the Wally Heider recordings all in great quality and in a comprehensive manner would be a great thing to own.

Great suggestions (as usual), especially the SWD Matrix mentions.

I'd Love a deluxo of Love You including the demos and other flotsam de jour.

Was yesterday wondering if anything will be cooked up for the PS 50th come 2016; not that there may be any new stuff, more given the age of the box and it's perpetual popularity, a "modern" remastering may be in order.

There's a Blu-ray audio due out this month but seems to contain only the basic 12 tracks. Which I find flabbergasting... What a wasted opportunity (unless there're in some so-far unissued hyper quality…)

They should have a boxed set where they remix/remaster all the 60s and 70s albums and put bonus tracks on each disc. Or rerelease each one as a deluxe edition or something. It's been since 1990 that they really did any work on the albums. All they did in 2000 was rehash the same remasters right? I think the BB catalog could use some new remastering, since the newer albums they did remaster last year sound really good (Smiley Smile, Sunflower, Surfs Up, the stuff on MIC as well). They should nix the 2-fer sh*t too. Each album should be heard individually imo. The 2-fers were a huge value growing up first becoming a BB fan, but you can still get those used if you are just getting into the group.

I suspect this edition won't offer anymore, in terms of sonics or artwork, than what was on the recent Capitol reissue - the only difference is this will be in 88.2khz given the disc format; or might just be a upsample of the redbook standard.

The current Blu-Ray audio tidal wave smacks of a quick to market gimmick to address HQ downloading/declining CD sales - I don't think the record companies are putting a lot of effort into remastering, repackaging etc with a view to providing "prestige" releases at this stage (just speculating); I see Pink Moon is slated for release soon.

I will, of course, probably buy both  :lol

I'd love to have the the discrete tracks of the entire discography (or at least PS and Sunflower), but don't think that will happen for many years if at all (but in any case certainly not in five years).

More realistically, I'd really love a Sunflower set with a capella and instrumental mixes and session highlights, and a general vocal set with a capella mixes of other songs of note not already released. A stereo Today! and Wild Honey would also be excellent.

A stereo Today! has already been released.

After stereo Smiley Smile (with "Heroes and Villains" done right, with the damn Baldwin organ added!), Today, Summer Days and some of those really rare tracks on MIC, pretty much a stereo Wild Honey would do me right for awhile. I really hope that comes out sometime soon, then we'll finally have every officially released studio LP in stereo for once. Luckily there's a few songs that were remixed in stereo, but not a majority of it.

Sigh. Yes I did. Allow me to quote:

Quote
It's been since 1990 that they really did any work on the albums.

Which is incorrect. Given remasterings in 96 (Pet Sounds), 2000 (everything else) and 2012 (selected stereo/mono releases).

Quote
All they did in 2000 was rehash the same remasters right?

As I just stated, this is incorrect. You just have to look at the copyright notices on the releases to realize this.

Quote
since the newer albums they did remaster last year sound really good (Smiley Smile, Sunflower, Surfs Up, the stuff on MIC as well).

Which is just a bizarre thing to say, mainly because it contradicts something the poster had just written (either they did remasters post 90 or they didn't). Also, how is Smiley Smile, a 46-year-old record, a "newer album"?

The point is, the OP should take a moment to learn about these things. No one bothered to correct him, which is how misinformation gets spread.

I would love some really focused boxsets, based around specific things. MiC was career spanning, which was great because they got to release all kinds of things, but I think zeroing on a specific album, or series of albums, is the right way to go.

Things I think would be great:
Wild Honey - Smiley Smile - Friends triple box set, all things included.
Sunflower Seeds box set, just Sunflower material
Surf's Up set, with a possible release of Landlocked as it would have appeared had it been released back then.
CATP + Holland set, with extra Blondie + Ricky live material
A live box set - this would work as a career spanning set quite well. A CD for each decade, ending with a show from C50.

Surf's Up set, with a possible release of Landlocked as it would have appeared had it been released back then.

Le sigh.

OK, once more: Landlocked only ever existed as a working title for Surf's Up for maybe a few weeks. The list of titles commonly, and incorrectly, booted as Landlocked derives from a tape assembled 9/1/70, listed as "2nd Warner Brothers LP" on the tape box. The tracks on the tape (as noted on the box label) were:

Loop De Loop/Susie Cincinnati/San Miguel/H.E.L.P./Take A Load Off Your Feet/Carnival/I Just Got My Pay/Good Time/Big Sur/My Lady/When Girls Get Together/Lookin' At Tomorrow/How Deep Is The Ocean Surf's Up.

Also scrawled on the box is "GRILLO HIPE". The last title is "'Til I Die" minus Brian's lead.

.....and I think we have all we're going to get as far as stereo tracks for Wild Honey.

I'm utterly not concerned re hearing a stereo Wild Honey. I think the title track and, especially, Country Air sound far better in mono. Country Air on MIC just sounds to me like it's had all the soul stripped out of it - that gorgeous multi-harmony chorus kicks in and... oh, that sounded a bit more lame than I was anticipating. Much better in nice full-sounding mono.

Personally, I couldn't give a rats ass above hearing stereo this, mono that, etc. I'm not overly bothered about hearing live tracks either, although I appreciate they're often stunning (I'd certainly buy a live set, but I wouldn't be salivating in anticipation like some here...)

No, all I want is a) unreleased tracks, b) vocal-only tracks, and c) sessions. That's it.

If they released each album with a bonus CD (or two) consisting of the above, I'd be a very happy man.

Last Wilson Standing is a superb idea IMHO. I would just love to hear Brian's best solo things lined up, so that the many, many pearls he did can shine in a proper context, and thus attain the status they deserve. I think there should be a book to go with that box, that outlines in detail what he was up to at any given point (recording-wise); what he had planned, and what got realised eventually. The story should be not sycophantic, just truthful. I think the people interested in such a project would not be happy with some glossy hagiography anyway. Perhaps a DVD with a well-chosen compilation of various documentaries (the Don Was film, Beautiful Dreamer) and live appearances (PS, SMiLE) could accompany it, but then that disk should have new, additional commentary by someone in the know.

Oh, and I bet our AGD would jump at the chance to be involved in such an enterprise.

I really hope that somebody in the near furture puts out a Beach Boys bootleg with the title Raiders Of The Lost Archives.  ;D It would be nice to have a "warts and all"  50th Anniversary cd set, without the mountains of auto tune and studio fuckery that was added to the cd that was released of the tour. The mechanical version of Add Some MUsic To Your Day is just disgraceful, plain and simple. I realize that the shows had their occasional rough spots, but with some careful and tasteful editing they coould have come up with a MUCH better cd.

The Sunflower Deluxe has to be a no-brainer. The material's exists in abundance, Mark and Boyd both seem eager to get one out , and there's been a clamouring on the board for, oooh, hours now.

Also a no-brainer is an early 70s live set.  The only thing we don't seem to agree on here is the format:

I say, dispense with the idea of an expanded In Concert set and instead release either a single box or a series of (Bob Dylan) Bootleg series sets – whichever, what I'd like is for every gig recorded in support of the original '73 In Concert release to come out in its own right, in its entirety. I don't even know how many gigs were recorded, but the 2xLP set was drawn from several gigs so I assume they're all in the vaults, for starters.

The period between 20/20 and Surf's Up represents the time the individual band members were each flowering creatively and the Sunflower set would epitomise that.  The early 70s live era was the band at its live peak (well, one of its live peaks) and is crying out for a release that reflects that and does it justice.  Look at what's been happening with live releases by The Band, and Humble Pie… concerts in full in all their glory; our band deserves and, for the early 70s, certainly justifies and warrants that kind of treatment.

The one set I'm surprised we didn't get in C50 was a proper Surfin' Safari re-release. Loads of stuff from grey market labels with multitudes of bonus tracks, but nothing from the band's own label.  That was where it all started, and augmented with bonus tracks like those used by the grey marketeers, or perhaps some of the stuff that appeared last year on Big Beat 63, and of course the Hite Morgan tracks (aye, First Wave again!), the occasion could have been even better marked, and fittingly.

The commercial realities? I suspect the Sunflower set and the Live releases would sell sufficiently well; the early stuff perhaps not-so, though it might appeal to the specialist rock and roll market as well as the hardcores…

I would LOVE to have a "super deluxe" box set(no less than, oh....20 cd's.  ;D) that would focus on the period between Wild Honey up to Sunflower. This is quickly becoming my favorite era for the band.

As long as a box set comes out that includes every existing take of the backing track for The Little Girl I Once Knew I'll be happy.  The Hawthorne release was a torturous tease.  We only got a take of the first part of the track.  The second half is where all the magic happens.  I still have yet to see this song get the attention it deserves on any of the BB/BW documentaries that I've seen, including (surprisingly) BW: Songwriter.  The song would have fit perfectly on Pet Sounds with more mature lyrics.  It was recorded closer to the main bulk of the Pet Sounds tracks than Sloop John B.

Yay! I love The Little Girl I Once Knew, my "coup de foudre" for my BB interest.  It wasn't a hit, it wasn't on an album (I think it should have been on the original Summer Days and Summer Nights!) and, for me it was like being struck by a meteor! I realize it was added on a later "remaster."

What I'd like to see is a downloadable CD (or cluster) of session tracks from the albums, "un-touched."I don't care about the gift-wrap.  My ears don't care what the artwork is.  I'd love Wild Honey, 20/20, and SDSN, for a starter (no, I'm not greedy  :lol ) in simple format such as the Pet Sounds sessions box set. There is likely a limited market for these session tracks.  Most fans just want the hits, which is fine for them.

Sunflower Sessions deluxe set - stereo/matrix mixes plus outtakes and vocal/instrmental tracks

Surf's Up ditto

Holland ditto

The Complete Brian Wilson Productions 1962-1997

"Rarities" box, collecting all of odd/one-off/non-album tracks.

Last Wilson Standing 1986-201? comprehensive BW solo box, 4CDs minimum.

Raiders of the Lost Archives - unreleased tracks 1962-2012
This is the list I'd be down for.  Except for the Brian Wilson stuff, I'd rather have BB material first.  Also the Wild Honey album in stereo is a must.  Raiders of the Lost Archives -  :-D

The 2000 twofers were all newly remastered. The 60s stuff and the 70s and 80s stuff.

All the albums released last year were newly remastered too.

Stoney, it's like you didn't even read his post. :'(

Sigh.

I didn't state the 2000 reissues as being rehashes of 1990 editions as fact. I obviously asked a question. See that question mark in my original post? I could have sworn I read here that they weren't all that different. They just took off a noise reduction on the 1990 reissues but that's about it. Ok, I'm wrong probably. Sorry.. but I did ask if they were the same or not.

And I didn't say "newer albums". Jeez are you pedantic or what? Most of the sh*t you are replying to in my post is you just twisting my post around, giving yourself an excuse to make yourself seem superior.

Obviously Smiley Smile is not new. Obviously nor are the others I mentioned., but the REISSUES are new! Smiley Smile was remixed in stereo! That is not old! We just got that in 2012.. so that means it's new. I said "newer albums" meaning "newer reissues". Jesus use your brain. All I am saying is that, like it or not, I don't think the 1990 and 2000 reissues are much different. Sure, they may have done work on them, but they don't sound much different at all to me. I'm sure they are different, but my point is that if Smiley, Sunflower, et al sounded great remastered in 2012, the rest could sound great being remastered too. Even the mono Smiley, Today and Summer Days sound at least slightly better than the 2000 2-fers. They sound more clear and obviously cleaned up a little. Smiley had some tape hiss on the 2-fer, the reissue doesn't and sounds great. I personally also thought Today & Summer Days mono was very muddy sounding and that's why I waited decades to hear it all in stereo. Maybe a remastered Wild Honey in mono would help enough. The vinyl sounds better.

I really don't get what was the big deal about pointing this out. Sorry for my tone but "The point is, the OP should take a moment to learn about these things. No one bothered to correct him, which is how misinformation gets spread." is a very condescending statement, and I don't appreciate it. I have been a fan for quite a while and I'd like to say I am experienced enough to know these type of things. I didn't even "spread misinformation".

Also now that we know that Fun, Fun, Fun and Warmth of The Sun are properly mixed in Stereo. Maybe we can get a disc with some backing Track sessions and Vocals Only? Come on Mark and Alan it would be a perfect Digital only release as well!

#20 in Billboard, better in the UK, I'll concede, and not too bad, in a few "intelligent" American cities.  :lol

Overall, not a "Rhonda!"

Absolutely true, DB, and it makes me think that Alan and Mark should consider pitching a box set called BEACH BOYS BOOTLEGS: SEA OF TUNES' GREATEST SESSIONS which would pick through all of what got bootlegged and make a "proper" release of the best from that vast "catalogue." That might sell better than "augmented" CDs of the historical LPs, even with vocal only/instrumental only bonus tracks.

The perfect new BBs set would consist of about 70% stuff I already own, with some live tracks and remixes added.  It would carefully avoid any/all recordings that could lead people to believe that B-Dub is in any way weird, and it would be called something like "California Summer."

Also, certain albums should be remastered, but other albums--preferably some of my personal favorites--should be skipped arbitrarily.

To cap it all off, the members of the band should participate in yet another public feud, leaving it clear that they will most likely never perform together again.

Although licensing costs may prove prohibitive, I'd like to see a boxset of The Beach Boys' television appearances throughout the years (Steve Allen Show, The Red Skelton Show, various European TV appearances, Lloyd Thaxton show, Les Crane, Mike Douglas, Dick Cavett, Merv Griffin, Happening, Joey Bishop, NRCV TV Studio Amsterdam, David Frost, Something Else, Get It Together, TOTP, Grand Gala Du Disque,  Good Vibrations from Central Park and London, New Year's Rockin' Eve, etc.).

The little girl I once knew reached #20 but was left off sounds of summer. Caroline, no reached #32, it's ok reached #29. So can it really be called the very best of... Interesting.

I would like to have the time, skill, and equipment/software to edit and compile the music I already have  into  a series of  personalized playlists and groupings.   Right now, more music and various versions would only add to my musical clutter and  confusion.

I would actually forgo anymore boxsets if it meant www.beachboyscentral.com (http://www.beachboyscentral.com) was actually up and running. ;D

I'd love a 2 disc album, one disc with remastered backing tracks, the other disc full of stereo vocals only of the songs on disc 1...and they'd come from all eras of the Beach Boys career.

Hey, weird, this is exactly what i want too! The market definitely needs something like this. Maybe another possibility for the title could be "Pet Summer" to really highlight the fact that the Beach Boys were a surf band that made the masterpiece Pet Sounds out of nowhere and disappeared thereafter. The cover should be done on Microsoft Paint to keep it consistent with releases from the past few years. I'm thinking something like surfboards lined up on the beach or, like, an orange or something. Just something that really screams summer. Or how about an illustration of the Beach Boys performing inside a summer dome while the rest of the world outside is an icy tundra?

Agree.  Before any more music CDs, this should be done.  Put it all together in one place.  Complete performances, not just clips - 'cause they don't think they can keep our attention.  No talk-over either, like they did on The Beatles Anthology in the middle of a song.  No fancy jumbled up videos, again like so many were on The Beatles.  Though I guess there are not that many in Beach Boys World, other than what little we do have.  Commentary is okay, but give us a Music Only Button, like on the Monkees or Turtles DVDs.
Complete concerts, no matter how many times they go through the Car/Surf medleys.  Just clean 'em up as best can be done and tell me when I can order.
Brother Film Division has been on hold much too long.  Please do this NOW!  Something, even if you can't get the rights to it all.  I am tired of only having these things on You-Tube in a small screen box, in less than optimum quality.
Who can put this in my hands before I'm too old to see and hear?

I quite liked the title Beachology that someone came up with for one of their comps, so I hope... they wouldn't mind... if... *cough*

The bedroom tapes would be pretty amazing. I just really want to hear Brian's piano demo of 'Til I Die'. To me, that's the holy grail of the unheard stuff. And though I would love everything mentioned already here, the one realistic possibility of a box set I'd love is one of just demos, all the existing demos. There's a kind of thrill in the demo version of 'I'll Bet He's Nice' that isn't in the album version. If all those bare demos were unearthed I'd pay good money for that box set. And interesting things like the Dennis vocal version of 'A Day in the Life of a Tree'.

Though more than a box set, I'd like a great documentary about the Beach Boys. A really in depth one. One that covers all the bases thoroughly. Endless Harmony was great, but the Smile section wasn't exactly thorough. Beautiful Dreamer is great, but it's also a lot about Brian's resurrection of it, and there aren't any interviews with the other guys from the Beach Boys. I'd like the documentary to have, as I've said, thorough sections on every base, with interviews with all the guys (including as much footage from Dennis and Carl as can be found). How I imagine it in my head is amazing, and if I had the money and resources I would. Their music and story is so rich that it wouldn't be anything less than unbelievable.

Anyways, yeah, the bedroom tapes would be pretty amazing.

I think the one that makes sense is a Brian Wilson solo box set, or at least an expanded multi-disc compilation. There's enough unreleased material to make it work (far more unreleased material than there appears to still be for the Beach boys). There's the Sweet Insanity stuff and Paley sessions material that deserves release, countless demos from over the years (particularly if it covered solo performances of eventual Beach Boys material), presumably plenty of live material, various oddities which are only available as downloads or stand alone solo tracks on compilations (California Feelin, Rodney on the Roq), outtakes from solo album sessions, bonus tracks not included as standard on various album releases. There's plenty there that could make a really complete set. I'd wait until after Brian's next solo album and do it some time around the biopic's release. Something a bit like the recent Nilsson set might be good, discs of each released album with bonus material and then additional discs for rarities/unreleased material.

Can't see it happening, but it should!

probably the hardest part would be obtaining the rights to all the different projects he has done over the years...

A box-set, or even a single CD, of demos would be wonderful.
Doesn't unreleased material (like demos) fall into the public domain after a certain period of time if it doesn't get an official release?

Yup - I think after 50 years it falls into the public domain if not officially released, hence Big Beat. I suppose that means we can expect a few more releases in the next two decades...

I was reading Keith Badman's definitive diary book on the Beach Boys today and apparently Brian recorded a solo piano version of In The Back of My Mind with a newly written bridge during the Love You sessions. That'd be cool to hear.

All of their catalog, presented chronologically, in the highest bit rate possible, in multitrack form, NO noise reduction, NO additional compression, and downloadable with some kind of multitrack mixer you can use if you don't already have your own.

Oh, and all the artwork in high resolution including all unused photos from the cover/back cover photo sessions, and ALL the studio session photos relating to the recorded work.

AND last but not least...a "60 Years of Fun in the Sun" Tee shirt.  :)

All this stuff should have been released over their 50th...... :-X

A comprehensive 2012 concert DVD should have come out by now. A complete show or best-of comp from the Wembley, ROH, Japan, and/or U.S. show(s). A 2-CD set at minimum.
I would love this.

A live box covering their entire career with DVD of the central park concert that was on HBO and footage of the July 4th Washington DC concerts.  6 CD's should do it, including Chicago, Lei'd in Hawaii, Wild Honey 67 tour, Big Sur, Carnegie, outtakes from Live in London and In Concert, Paramount box set tour, etc.

Love this idea but would like to see that selection expanded; we have a lot of it as reasonable soundboard boots already so let's have all that in the highest quality, augmented by, say six or seven discs (minimum, though the max ought to be somewhere in the low hundreds… cos we're not greedy or lusting or anything…) of live stuff that ISN'T already out there.  Gotta be stacks tucked away somewhere…

Don't forget the 1978 Australian tour! Carl's vocals sounded very honest on that tour.

yea, even when Carl was drunk he still didn't sound half bad  :).  all of those live tracks especially from 1970-75 would be awesome to release all together.

Agreed. A funny comment I found on YouTube was "I'll take a drunken Carl over a sober Mike". The guy's not along in his opinion  :lol

Like many have said already, I wanna see a DVD-boxset with the best live shows from early 70's to early 80's. There's got to be full shows on film somewhere, I've had enough of the small pieces seen in some documentaries and crappy VHS-copies in youtube. Put that out, include at least 3 complete full shows + other snippets and I'll buy it, don't care how much it costs. And please, don't put on the cover art images of sun, surfboards, beach, girls in bikinis, cars or write the word "good vibrations" to it. It's a crime that they haven't released in good quality, or in the matter of fact in any kind of quality, a single show including Blondie and Ricky, a show from the Brian's back-era, or a show from Dennis' last year. That stuff exists somewhere and I need to see it  >:D

edit: I forgot completely the 2012 RAH and Wembley shows, those should be finally released too, in that same boxset.
