That's a neat collectible! I can see those being popular even among those who don't bother with trading cards. I had no idea such an item was even in the pipeline - count me in for the guitar picks.  :)

Of course if we could flash back to a few decades ago, we could take a vote on which band member's trading card would be most likely to end up flapping in the spokes of our bicycle wheels.

The guitar pick cards do look pretty cool.

I'll definitely have to get me some Carl and Dennis cards!

The last time I collected trading cards of any kind, the Topps company was still putting that stale pink gum in the packs of cards.  ;D  I think these cards might end that self-imposed exile, at least until I score either the picks or an autograph.

Thanks for posting this.

I believe that if you buy an entire box you are guaranteed at least a  full set of cards and your chances are better in getting an 'extra' like and autograpgh or a pick. At least thats how some other card companies operate.

If you go to a card show or convention you are going to pay big money for the autograph cards so hopefully you'll be lucky and score one in a pack.

Looks like a high quality product. Nice to see things like this post BB50.

Here's another review site.

Where does one buy these things, if there's no hobby or comics stores locally?

They aren't up yet for pre order but I'm sure they will be available on the panini website. I think you'll have to purchase an entire box, though. Nice collectable.

Blowoutcards.com will probably have it. They're a big online card site.

I cannot wait for this. Collecting trading cards is one of my favorite hobbies. If the price is right, I may even buy a case.

'Xcuse my ignorance, but are the autograph cards likely to be genuine signatures or simply prints?  (We don't have quite the same card collecting culture in the UK!).

The signatures should be genuine, not prints or copies.

The signatures should be genuine, not prints or copies.

And the picks are therefore actual picks, not mere images????

It depends. The standard is usual 10 or 12.

They will be real picks. Whether they have been used or not isn't clear.

…  and if I get a Brian Wilson card do I have to feed him and take him for walks?

;D

Gotta say, I'm pretty impressed. Perhaps not driven to start collecting, but back in the days when I earned half-decent money I might've bitten!

I'm sure the autographs are legit, but the picks are probably not "used" but rather commemorative or collectible-issue picks. Which is still cool, I'd be in on that, but they don't appear to be stage picks.

It's a neat development and neat product, the only red flag I saw was that the Beach Boys cards are following up similar releases that included a Justin Beiber commemorative card set.

The autographed card "bonuses" were one of the ways the trading card industry reignited interest in what was a self-made drop in the hobby due to overprinting and flooding the market when it was at a peak in the late 80's. When I was in it, there were certain very collectible current releases because they kept the printing runs low and the the supply was lower than the demand. Around 1987 the Topps company literally flooded the market in an attempt to cash in, then Fleer and Donruss (whose parent company is the one putting out the BB's release) followed suit by overprinting sets starting around 1988. Where their sets were in high demand due to lower availability, they flooded the market around '88 and it tanked.

Eventually after the baseball market was further harmed by the drug-addled frauds who were once the heroes of the game and of the card industry, the companies came up with a genius plan to start adding bonuses into the packaging. The bonuses could be autographed cards, very rare or valuable vintage cards, or other historical items like that.

The thrill of opening the packs went from the chance you'd get a Jose Canseco rookie card in the 80's to the chance you'd get a rare '52 Topps Mantle card or an autograph from a Hall Of Fame player stuck in the pack.

Smart marketing. It gave upscale collectors as well as people who didn't even collect cards an incentive to buy a pack, just like buying a lottery ticket with the chance you'd get a good bonus out of it.

And look how this Beach Boys set has already generated excitement here for people who might not even collect cards wanting to take a chance that they'll get one of the autographed bonuses? Good stuff. Kudos to them.

I used to collect baseball cards in the 80's...fortunately like the stock market, in a bout of financial good luck I haven't had since, I bought low and sold high, just before the market collapsed...and was able to fund some really nice musical equipment for a kid to have in his teens.  :) I still have one box of stuff I kept, though, for sentimental reasons.

This actually piques the interest of the dormant collector in me, but I fear for those not in the US this could prove extremely expensive, or is there a chance this will be available worldwide?

Alright so lets clear this up once and for all if possible.  Is Brian Wilson a Yankees or a Dodgers fan because I've heard it both ways.  I've read that Mickey Mantle was his boyhood idol but I've also heard his rooting allegiance was to The Dodgers.  Can anyone confirm which way he swings?  Was he like many California Boys a Dodgers convert when they moved out to Los Angeles?

I think he mostly liked the Yankees because of Mantle but as you said, he could've switched because when he first started rooting, there was no MLB west coast baseball (there is the pacific league though.)

By the way, the Beach Boys aren't the first musical act to get trading cards. Elvis had it first (Elvis is the musical "Simpsons did it."):

job,  What's your job?  That's 20 x $1300.  Sure there must be a cheaper way to get Brian's autograph.  I looked over at Ebay to see how much my Beatles 1993 River Group set is worth, and it's not much for the base set.  Except for the chase and promo sets, those were big bucks.  A sealed box is going for $40.  I didn't even see the #1 Hits Gold Record cards, so those must be holding their value.  I did collect a variety (movie, NASCAR) back in the late 80's/early90's, but not to re-sell.  As was said, the market bottomed out.  A big-time card collector friend helped me, so I didn't have to buy boxes, he did.  After seeing those prices for the promo cards, maybe I will think about selling some of them.  guitarfool2002, I too love your Brian mock-up.  Is that a glass of milk?  Or, a shake?  ;)

The Bruce Johnston Commemorative Guitar Pick cards all have his name misspelled on the pick.  The picks all have "Bruce Johnson" printed on them.  It's hard to believe that they didn't catch this slip up.

Got this from a friend this evening; he says there are two completely different sets of cards, Hobby and Retail. ( I've only seen the Hobby for sale by box lot)

>>In each box that I bought, I got the whole basic set of 120 cards. However, there are so many subsets to these card that if one tried to get everything, you would end up spending thousands of dollars. With the subsets, there are over 800 cards all together.  They are already on e-bay, some of the autographs are listed for a lot of money.  To make things more difficult to collect everything, is there are both Hobby and Retail boxes. I bought the Hobby boxes. In the Hobby boxes exclusively, you will get 2 Concert Gear cards, which are swatches of material from Shirts worn by the boys in concert. The Retail boxes have guitar picks. In both the hobby and the retail boxes you have the opportunity to get Autographs, although they are very limited. On E-bay sellers are selling packs. On the front of the pack, on the right near the top, it will either say Hobby or Retail. <<

Going only by what's turning up on the secondary market, it looks like the guitar pick cards are much more common the than the Concert Gear cards.

These trading cards are kind of neat, but really weird, and ultimately kind of annoying. I don’t want to speak on behalf of Beach Boys fans, but comparing to other “fan bases” that would collect such cards (I dunno, “Walking Dead” fans or “My Little Pony” indie nerd fans, or something), the BB fan base just doesn’t seem as ripe for this sort of trading card exploitation. There are certainly plenty of BB fans that will buy them, but other than a hand full of hardcore collectors, the type that collect every 60’s Beach Boys single variation including alternate label perimeter print, I don’t see a lot of fans chasing the 680 variant cards (if the previous post is accurate).

And it’s turning into a lot of other “limited” collector pieces; Panini isn’t making the money on the secondary market for grossly inflated prices. I’m not trying to sounded jaded, but is the person currently willing to pay almost $200 for the Al Jardine autographed card aware that you can get a Jardine signature for much less? He used to send them out for free to fans when he had a fan club. I got one from him while he was eating a chocolate ice cream cone before a gig one time. I’ve talked to fans who simply send requests to him in the mail and get autographs back. I know the card has value as a collectible too, but wow.

My main interest in this kind of stuff often comes from the fact that the Beach Boys don’t license merchandise that often, especially if you discount stuff sold at the merchandise booth on tours. They’ve licensed the odd tree ornament here and there. They did those diecast cars like 10 or 15 years ago. There are a few other odd things over the years. But it is fun to see even the possibility of a hobby shop selling a card set featuring weird 70’s pictures of the Beach Boys.

If a base set can be obtained by buying a box, I’ll probably bite at some point and pick up a box. The only good thing about there being potentially 680 chase cards is that it is impossible to get them, so it’ll be easier to not try!

Seeing that the cards went up for sale before I even got notice of shipping the retail dealers must have gotten early shipments.

When a Retail pack sells for more ($17.00) than what one costs in a full box it looks like for the present there is money to be made by purchasing the cards in bulk and reselling single cards or packs.

Hoping that I will get the "hobby" sets since I did buy a box online. Some of the fabric swatches are less exicting than others (black fer instance) but I did notice a colorful-swatch Brian Concert Gear card sold for close to fifty dollars.

Looks like the BBTC are off to a good start!

I'd bet on everyone that's buying the box sets getting "Hobby". I haven't found anywhere online that's advertising boxes of "Retail" for sale; perhaps you actually have to be a store to get them?

Yep just got my Hobby Box -- cards of note are Brian and Al Concert Gear but no Autographs. For some reason some of the paks have "slugs" thick white card stock like Concert Gear cards but totally blank. You can weigh the unopened packs to locate them.

Target is definitely selling individual retail packs for $2.99 each
Blowout Cards had 20 boxes( and some cases)on Ebay with free shipping, but they sold four boxes and canceled the listings...

Anyone yet got any actual … wassit called, that stuff? … oh yer - music out of this?

bgas, what part of the store do you find them in? I am going after work to see what I can find. There are no Guitar Picks in the Hobby packs. I also got a couple of Etchings in my box, the Smile Record but no Artist Proofs etc.

I think I know why some packs have the blank "slugs". Its to fool you, so you cant tell a pack has something special just by the weight or feel of it. Of course a pack that weighs less is sure NOT to have concert gear inside.

Since Ive only seen pics of the autograph cards,,,does anyone know are they thick like concert gear or standard thickness??

The store I went to has them on a rack just past the line of checkout registers.  went back this morning, and didn't see anything on any of the packs to signify "hot".
What I did notice: all 24 packs were still there; 17  of them were skinny and the other 7 were twice as thick. I bought those( they probably have the blank slugs)
opened one pack, and, indeed, it had a blank slug and 8 cards. FFF Top Ten Hits, and #'s 8,32,50,89,92,95 and 120
So now the question is, do all the thick packs have blank slugs, or do some have real stuff?  ( should I keep or return them? I'm not opening them all to find 7 more slugs!)
On the back they list the card breakdown, and where to send away for your free card(s); hope it shows up readable here:

Can somebody enlighten me on the whole card collecting phenomenon?  What exactly is the appeal of collecting something that is rare only because somebody at a factory hasn't hit "Print" more?

You said it.   ;)

Probably the cards with fabric swatches/ autographs/ guitar picks/ and limited or one-offs are going to be able to increase in value. Aside from viewing it as an investment I was impressed with the quality of the cards, some photos of BB I havent seen before or in much better quality. All the cards are very nice. I even got a BB road case card...the "indian" logo was stenciled on this case. I thought that was an unusual idea and departure from the mugshots and group photos.

Maybe have to go back tomorrow and see if any say Hot Pack  ( unless they're all sold out....)

The store I went to has them on a rack just past the line of checkout registers.  went back this morning, and didn't see anything on any of the packs to signify "hot".

Must be "Dealer Talk" to get the people on ebay to bid way more than these retail packs are worth. We will see when their feedback starts coming in! If dealers are assuming the thicker ones all have goodies in them they will find out otherwise when people complain about "getting a rock" in their trick or treat bags.  ;D

I will still grab a few packs at the Target or Walmart just for kicks. Who knows I might get lucky with a BW sig.

Can anyone who has found these at Target find Target’s item identifier number? (Target calls it their DPCI number; it’s different from the actual SKU number on the bar code) The two ways to get it are either to scan the item at the store at one of the “price check” stations (and it will show on the screen), or it should be on the receipt as well if you’ve already purchased them. It’s a nine-digit number that follows this format: 086-02-2525

If anyone can track that down, that would be much appreciated. I can’t find a listing for the cards on the Target website, which would be the other place to possibly find that DPCI number. Thanks!

Now why would there be a Mike Love guitar pick? Surely a saxophone reed would be more authentic… [splutter]!

Apparently, the blank slugs are to discourage the people who are looking for "hits" by feeling, measuring, weighing the packages. Mfg. also puts the hits (or slugs) in the middle of the pack so no discernable features can be felt. I also read most Hot Packs of any trading cards are scams, so beware.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news - but the thicker paks might also have something special you just cant tell by thickness - now I could see a printing plate being much heavier than a paper blank.

Got any that weigh over .08 oz?  ;)

I think they all weigh the same, so that means they're all blank slugs. Might as well return them for other packs.

No, not particularly. the idea is ALL of them weigh the same .08 with a blank or a concert gear. a pack of standard cards are .06

BUT i dont know what a autograph card looks like. You might get one mixed with common cards in .06 pack?

I would think the cards with picks are thicker but not sure about that either. I need to get examples and weigh them.

Surely a metal plate would cause the pack to exceed an ounce.

Our TARGET had no BB cards at all. Even checked the toy section, nada none. So I guess not all Target stores have them OR they havent stocked them yet.

I find it amusing that Target is carrying Beach Boys trading cards. Silly me -  of course, all those 8 year old kids are salivating at the thought of getting a chance at Bruce Johnston's autograph rather than a holographic Pokémon card.

In stores?  I really dont know. You can order a hobby box from blowoutcards or other dealers thats 190 cards
and you are guaranteed 2 of the concert gear cards (fabric relic) in a box. Not sure what overseas shipping
is gonna cost. It was $10 by UPS in the States.

Did you check ebay UK?

Looks like they're selling like crazy!  Blowout Cards seems to be out of boxes

I returned  the packs I hadn't opened.
Since most folks here seem to figure they're a waste of time, I expect they'll be selling them at cut-rate prices in no-time-at-all.

bgas you should re-read my posts about what I said concerning the thicker / slightly heavier packs. Not all the packs like that have blanks, the blanks are inserted only to confuse buyers whether there is a hit inside or not. With the blank you cant tell -- but it still may be a hit inside. Hope that helps.

Now after I found the two concert gear card in my box I could have quit opening them then but I decided to keep them all.

Yeah, you could be right.
I got my box delivered today. For me it's the collectible aspect. I didn't buy it to open it. (Like a sealed LP, I'd never open it)
I'd like to find a sealed box of the Retail cards also. but again, not to open.
Maybe I'll buy another pack here and there, but I'm not usually lucky that way( bonus), so...

LUCKY you!  ;D

Thanks to bgas for the item number for Target. I tried it at a couple of Targets but no luck. I tried another Target last night and didn’t even need to check the number, the box of cards was right there on the shelf.

I have a “hobby” box coming in the mail, but I thought I’d have some fun and pick up some “retail” packs just for kicks. I bought about a dozen packs. Apparently, according to the “retail” box, there is only one “guitar pick” card per box (considering they are arguably less interesting than the clothing swatches from the “hobby” box, I’m surprised there’s only one per box instead of at least two). I didn’t pull any picks in the packs I grabbed. Most importantly, I was finally able to get a general impression of the set.

The base set is pretty fun as far as the pics used. I’m getting a kick out of the some of the awkward, goofy 70’s and 80’s pictures they are using for these cards. I love the circa ’79 photo of Brian with the “Help Me Rhonda” shirt with the epically grizzly beard. That would have been the last photo I would have ever thought they’d use for a trading card set. They refreshingly haven’t just settled on album cover shots and standard early 60’s photo shoots. There are some nice shots of the guys (I liked one of the concert shots of Carl that appeared to be from the late 80’s or early 90’s), and some enjoyably embarrassing shots, like shots from the “Rock and Roll to the Rescue” video shoot.

As for the insert cards, again knowing that there’s no way to collect them all, I was still a bit disappointed at the lack of a great deal of the more visually interesting inserts. First of all, the “one gold foil card in every pack” is bogus. I wasn’t aware of this until I saw these cards in person, but they’ve taken every single card in the base set and most of the sub-sets, and created a variation (is this what the “parallel” cards are?) consisting of a tiny gold foil logo in the corner of a dude on a surfboard. This folks is  your “one gold foil card per pack.” I didn’t know that there was one per pack until I saw the packs in person, so my expectation of an awesome shiny cards in every pack was only prolonged for the car ride home. No big deal.

The truly visually interesting insert cards I managed were a couple of the “etchings” (I got Carl and Dennis; they literally used a photo of Carl circa 1978 when he has that sort of drunk look on his face), and several of the “record” cards focusing on specific albums, which are cut differently than the other cards. I got some of the other inserts as well, some of the “In their own words”, “Sounds of Summer”, and a few others. I also got a number of packs with the blank “slugs.” As someone else pointed out, the “slugs” occasionally can turn out to be actual rare cards, but considering that the vast majority are apparently blank and meant to throw people off, I’m wondering, mathematically, if your only intention is to pull any “chaser” card (and not just the super rare chunky ones like an autograph), perhaps statistically it’s better to skip packs that clearly have a “slug” in them? This would give you zero chance at the super rare ones, but increase your odds of getting some sort of desirable chaser card. But I don’t know if that math is accurate. I don’t know how often the “slugs” are actually slugs, nor do I know if they still put other super rare cards in packs that also have a slug (for the life of me, I can’t remember if, for instance, the “etching” cards came from packs with or without slugs).

But opening these cards was great fun, took me back to my childhood collecting Panini sticker books and basketball cards. I can’t imagine buying these and leaving everything sealed, and I’m someone who probably enjoys buying something in its original packaging and just sticking it on a shelf more than some. But for something like this, if you keep the box sealed, you’ll never even know if you have any of the rare cards anyway.

It’s probably best I don’t get autograph cards, because as bad as it sounds considering how much I’m enjoying these cards, if I actually pulled a Brian autograph and could really sell it for like 400 or 500, I’d be tempted to do it. Easier for me to say since I have a few of his autographs already.

ahh, for me, that's as good a point as any.  I'm keeping them sealed( I have a retail box on the way)
When all is said and done, and everyone has opened theirs, then the ones folks can't find will be in my sealed boxes, right?

I'm just gonna get a retail box, leave it sealed, and call it a day. Dunno if I really need a "hobby" box. I already have the Beatles Topps gum cards from the 60's and 3 boxes (2 sealed) of the Beatles River Group cards from the 1990's.

Thanks for the post Hey Jude -- I really didnt know you can get "parallel" card in every retail pack.

I guess the gold surfer isn't that exciting but they also are easy to come by as I got a few in my hobby packs, tho not 1 in every pack. Hobby packs are most likely to have a diecut "album" or etching or other bonus type card that isnt just a photograph.

As for the "blank" slugs I would still buy those thicker retail packs as they might contain guitar picks. I still do not know if an auto card is "thick" -- need to message a seller and get that info.  Printing plates are rare and Artists Proof cards are a limited number.

My Target store was sucky and didnt have them at all. I might check again tho as they also have a Starbucks. yum!

From comments so far, if you're looking at this strictly as a value/investment purchase, I'd leave the box and the packs sealed. They'll be worth more in the long terms than opening the packs looking for the bonus inserts. And from these early reports it seems like they're being a bit tight-fisted with the bonus inserts.

I would have thought the opposite would have been the case. It's a niche market for a niche product, priced higher than average cards...why not include more of those swatches of Al's paisley shirts or Mike's turban or the guitar picks for the loyal customers buying the cards?

From the perspective of a collector trying to acquire the desired pieces though (like me) I have to open the pack to see whats in it!!  OTOH I might keep a couple of sealed packs for the heck of it. But it would be tough to hang on to a sealed box and keep it sealed.  I am not a sealed item collector at heart. I open stuff, eventually.  :p

Undoubtedly, that sealed box might be worth $$$ big bucks $$$ in the future -- to sealed item collectors, as its not any more likely to have great "hits" inside than any other box.

From what you've opened so far, would you say it was what you expected in terms of getting some of the "bonus" items, or has it fallen short of what you thought would be in the packs? I ask because it seems like there are less of the bonuses than I would have expected from reading this thread. I'd expect to hear a report of at least one bonus card!

Seriously, a piece of Al's shirt isn't a '52 Topps Mantle or anything, right? :)

GF - Didn't know what to expect when i purchased a box but the contents lined up with bgas posts about the hobby boxes. I got a couple of etchings, 2 concert gear (fabric relic), some parallel cards and die cut cards. So I would say "no bonus" in that box as that would be an auto, printing plate or artist proof etc and I didnt get any of those.  There are a lot of common cards but they are all interesting and enjoyable.

Buying a box still seems to be a better value to me than a so-called Hot Pack on ebay for $10 and up.

I've asked some sellers on Ebay, and not gotten a really good response; so what IS a "Hot pack" or a "parallel card" ?

I don't have a pack in front of me, but I read the bit about the inserts either there or online and came away with the impression that the cards with the little surf logo are the parallel cards, essentially a whole second version of most of the cards.

A "hot pack" appears to simply be a dealer term, meant to indicate that they claim that there is a guarantee that a designated bonus card is in the pack. Quickly reading up on this, it appears this is shady at best. They could be honest and, having opened up the majority of a box of cards, feel by process of elimination the remaining packs have the bonus cards. But they could be wrong. Or worse of course if they are knowingly running a scam. How would a buyer prove that they didn't get a bonus card and then claim they didn't? What if Panini just packed a wonky pack?

It appears some "hot packs" from the other card sets can be sold based on literally feeling a desired card within the pack. That seems less likely with this Beach Boys set.

one dealer told me you could "feel"  the bonus cards, by holding the pack on it's side and feeling the indentation. I then pointed out I had opened just such a pack and all it had was a blank slug; no more response from that seller....

I've picked up the autographed cards of Bruce and Brian so far.  A few of the Al Jardine autographed cards and at least one of Mike's have hit the secondary market.  I haven't seen any of the David Marks autographed cards surface yet.  The Brian Wilson autographed cards are limited to only 65, and the Bruce, Al, and Mike autographed cards are all limited to 70 each.

I don't think I will get a Br___Wi___ auto unless its by sheer good luck.

I didn't get any autographed cards in my set, but I did get a card with a snippet of Brian Wilson's shirt in it, as well as one with David's. Still haven't found any retail cards on sale around here... yet.

It appears pretty random which Targets get them. I've checked four in my area, and two had them. So it may not even be a regional thing.

I'm also perplexed on the guitar picks. They come one per box instead of two, and I've bought almost a box worth and didn't get one. This makes me think the clothes swatches are more common than the picks. But there are a lot of picks on Ebay, and going for less than swatches.

Slightly annoying that these aren't being sold in the UK. Are the fabric cards actually pieces of fabric they used?

Seeing that the picks are not used and are just commemorative, I'd rather have a piece of their clothing.

Had an opened retail box of individual packs for sale at one Target near me. $2.99 for a pack of 8? On principle I purchased NONE. Gonna sound old here but I remember buying cigs for old folks in my neighborhood and getting to buy a pack of baseball cards as my service tip. In 1985 that meant 50 cents for a pack of 15 cards (no gum--I collected Fleer not Topps). $2.99 for a pack of 8 cards is just too crazy for me.

There are pretty good deals to be had on EBay for the regular 120 collector cards--may go for them at one point…not high on my priority list. I guess *THIS* is the limit of my BB Fandom

$2.99 is cheap. A pack of Topps baseball is $4.99 now and there is even a luxury basketball product that sells for $1000!

My wal-mart doesn't have them yet.

Retail is usually produced more because it is being mass marketed. Hobby is just for one focused group of collectors.

I'm not sure with these cards.

I know with other memorabilia cards (or costume cards), they use swatches of the same fabric used to make a shirt or piece of clothing. They don't actually take a movie prop and cut it into multiple pieces. That's how it was for the Lord of The Rings movie cards. So instead of cutting up one of Al Jardine's shirts from this past tour, they get a roll of cloth of the same fabric used to make Al's shirt and put that into the cards.

Seems as tho the Hobby ones are being marketed fairly well, tho, and it seems that the articles I've seen on these cards reference the Hobby cards.
I was under the impression that the HObby and Retail cards would be separate sets, and not combinable to complete a 10 card set; does anyone here know whether this is true/not?

That would be a good thing, if true in this case, as  i know I've mentioned previously that Als shirt are so small  they wouldn't allow for many swatches...

The back of card reads that Panini guarantees the fabric is from clothing worn "in concert" by the band members.

But no mention of what tour or venues.  Maybe by studying photos from the 50th one could match a photo to a Concert Gear card?

I got a BW but its jet black so that could be from a solid black shirt or any shirt with black on it.  ::)

My BW swatch is yellow with a black patterned stripe on it. The DM one is blue, with a woven pattern in it. Both swatches look to be from C50 shirts, which makes me think it would be fairly easy to get remnants from the shirt manufacturer.

Got my hobby box and cracked it open. Nothing earth shattering, looks like the typical haul. My concert gear was Brian and David (anyone help me out with an Al?). Got another etching (strange, I pulled three etchings out of slightly less than a box worth of retail packs, but only got one in a full hobby box), more of the cool record cards, and got my only "Artist Proof", which seem pretty shady, basically just numbered (out of 99) versions of normal cards; I actually didn't even realize until I went through the cards a second time that I had even pulled one. Still, great fun. I could open packs all day.

If they are really "proofs" that means they were the first run, before production of the regular non-proof cards.
That's the way they do it with coins - the proofs are the first ones struck.

But these might only have the gold fold lettering/ number sequence.

yeah, I hear ya, and I don't know. Out for errands today, I stopped in the Target I originally visited. Sopmeone had bought all the thick packs I returned last week, so I bought two others. Nothing special in them, just cards. ( what a waste of $$)
was near another Target, so I stopped in, but they're not stocking them. Don't know who makes the decisions as to which stores stock what, but I figure it must be the
salesperson/stocker/driver.  Target doesn't know anything about what is stocked. They couldn't even provide contact info for the company stocking the cards!!

Unreal. From a market-value angle, the card isn't even worth that, with the autograph. But again, the emotion of someone who doesn't have access being able to buy and own an autographed Brian Wilson trading card pretty much trumps any level of realistic value on items like this. But seriously, that's just a bit much for a "ready-made" collectible item versus, say, an autographed album. And the values assumed can be easily inflated in general beyond any realistic market value, just sayin'.

I think the "draw" is the remote possibility of getting an Autograph for $2.99 - and some people will get lucky.

If I get one, I will pay thru the nose, probably.

Has anyone seen the Concert Gear "buttons" yet? The back of the Hobby box says there is supposed to be 20 button cards.

I guess after the shirts are all cut up the buttons will be released?

I bought a set of the basic cards for $40 on ebay. An autograph may be cool but I really just want to see the pictures chosen.

Title: Re: Beach Boys Trading Cards !!
Post by: SloopJohnnyB on November 14, 2013, 06:31:12 AM
I really think the pictures chosen are fantastic. Surprised to see some really cool photos from the 1970's. I think Dennis is really well represented which is really nice. Carl, too.

I really like the guitar pick cards which only seem to be available in the retail boxes. It looks like one pick per box.

The 'hobby' boxes have two 'gear' cards per box. Nice. I'm not a trading card person but I noticed they are doing the same type of clothing/swatch thing with baseball cards.

I've been to 4 or 5  Target stores in my area and only 2 stores had the cards. Maybe the others will have the cards at a later date. It looks like one box per store and they open the boxes. If you want an entire box with all 24 packs you have to get there the same day or be lucky that no one bought any packs. I found a full box at a Target and couldn't pass it up. Got a Al Jardine pick.

The set represents the Beach Boys 50 (or 51) years really well.  No Ricky or Blonde, though.

There is a card with a current photo of Brian and David, and on the back I think it mentions Brian's 2013 tour. I have to go back and look at that. Makes it all very current and up to date. This set wasn't releases last year for the 50th probably because they wanted to use photos from the BB50 tour along with the clothing relics.

The big thrill is serching for those autograph cards!

I'll scan some of the cards and post them here on this thread this weekend.

Ebay is an option for the 'hobby' box. Blowout Cards is probably the best choice.

The Beatles and the Monkees had trading cards in the 1960's. Nice to see the Beach Boys have their trading cards now.

If you want the display box from Target just wait till the box is low on cards. Buy the remaining cards in the box and take the box along. Tell the clerk you want the box. They'll give it to you because you bought the remaining packs.

If you buy a complete box open the packs by cutting a slice on the back, near the bottom of the pack. You can slide your cards out and put the empty packs back in the box. Looks like a full box and make a nice collectable display piece. (I still want that 15 Big Ones store display that I saw at a National Record Mart back in 1976!!!!)

I didn't mean buying the packs of cards, that's what it's all about! The only thing missing is the stale gum.  :)  I meant that Ebay auction posted here where as of yesterday the bids for a Brian card were over 110 dollars. I think that kills the fun aspect of it, and the whole random/chance element that I used to love more as a kid buying the packs of baseball cards rather than paying a dealer x-amount for a single card.

Again, I understand why the bidding price would go so high for a Brian autograph card insert, but I just can't see it as the value isn't there as a ready-made collectible.

I know it's extreme, but imagine someone selling scratch-off lottery tickets where you knew it was a $1,000 winning ticket, and you'd pay $1,100 for that same ticket for the thrill of owning a 1000 winner.  ;D

I didn't mean buying the packs of cards, that's what it's all about! The only thing missing is the stale gum.  :)  I meant that Ebay auction posted here where as of yesterday the bids for a Brian card were over 110 dollars. I think that kills the fun aspect of it, and the whole random/chance element that I used to love more as a kid buying the packs of baseball cards rather than paying a dealer x-amount for a single card.

Unfortunately, eBay is full of things that kill the fun of collecting. So many things are artificially inflated. That's what Ebay feeds off of.

To buy into these cards is to accept and/or divorce oneself from the underlying issue that these cards and that whole industry is largely a manipulative scam. I'm enjoying the cards knowing I'll probably never see one of the rare ones.

Good points, ultimately that's what it's all about, and if you're enjoying it that's why you do it! I agree, there is still a thrill in opening those packs that takes me back to the baseball card days, when a cello pack of Topps went for 49 cents or something, and I'd be hoping to get all the Phillies from that year. Price guides weren't as vital as the fun in collecting them, when the price guides became most important that's when the hobby lost the fun for me.

And remember the wax packs? The reason why current cards come in those airtight foil wrappers was partially due to the crooked dealers who would open the wax packs, take out all the valuable cards, replace them with commons, and sometimes literally iron the packs back together to sell them to unsuspecting kids. That kind of thing killed it.  :)

Dang it all!!  I must be following a crooked dealer who has figured a way to open the "airtight foil wrappers" and reclose them!  I hit a different Target today and bought 4 of the wider-feeling packs; Nothing special in them, no autoigraphs or swatches or anything, just the darn blank white spacer( which I think was inserted to take up space in the boxes, so the packs fill the space without slipping around)   But probably they were already opened and had all the good stuff replaced...
In any case, as neat as the pictures on some of the cards are, I'm done buying these things. I'm not getting anything super from them...

The same thing happened to me when I found a open box at the first store I went to. There were maybe 5 or 6 thick packs and I bought them but the thick cards were all blanks. Whoever bought before me either got lucky or knew what he was doing. These 'card dealers' know how to find the good stuff. I don't doubt that there are 'trade secrets ' in the card collecting industry. I don't think people are opening packs and resealing them. The boxes are shrink wrapped from Panini. I think maybe  a seasoned trading card dealer knows what packs to pull out.

I found a full open box at a Target and bought the whole box. There seem to be seven 'thick' packs in a box. In my box one of those  seven contained a guitar pick card.

No autographs, yet. Your gonna have to be very lucky to pull one of those out. The numbers are so few.

The cards are very nice for a fan to have and yes, the fun part is opening the packs and looking for the 'special' cards. Just like looking for your home team back when you bought baseball or football cards.

Yeah, I'm broke untill next payday...  :thud  :lol

It's very addictive. I'll be tempted to go look and buy each time I'm in Target.

Again, these cards are really nice. I'd like to know whose idea this was. Someone from Panini or someone in the Beach Boys camp? Nice job!

If you want the display box from Target just wait till the box is low on cards. Buy the remaining cards in the box and take the box along. Tell the clerk you want the box. They'll give it to you because you bought the remaining packs.

(I still want that 15 Big Ones store display that I saw at a National Record Mart back in 1976!!!!)

Does that store display look like this??

Wow, that's great! That was part of it! The Record Mart has those things hanging from the ceiling. A bunch of them in the front of the store. But I also remember a floor stand, probably made of cardboard, which held the records and tapes. You know, a stand up display. It incorporated the same rings and album cover. Maybe individual photos of the band, just like on the album cover.

I was 14 years-old in 1976. I guess I'm  part of the second generation of fans that discovered the Beach Boys through the 'Endless Summer' and 'Spirit of America' albums. '15 Big Ones' was my first 'new' Beach Boys album. I guess I heard about the new album being released. I still remember walking in  and seeing those rings and album covers hanging down and walking over to the display. Bought the album. It became one of my favorites.

Thanks for posting the photo. I'll have to watch Ebay for one of those. I guess I like those 1970's albums a lot because they were the 'new' Beach Boys albums for me. I only have a handful of bands that I ALWAYS buy the new albums or new releases from. The Beach Boys were always one of them.

Ur welcome Sloop - I dont have this, I just recently saw it while browsing for the trading cards and I save pics of BB posters and stuff that interest me. Definately a "mobile" display designed to hang from the ceiling.

Thanks SloopJohnnyB,  It's nice to hear somebody say 15 Big Ones was a favorite around here.  And I agree, buying the records as they came out in store is something newer fans will never get to experience in today's marketplace.  That kind of promo push is over.  Can't find the records either.  What stores are left won't carry many new releases, or only one copy.  MIC was a good example of that, the new book, these cards too.  How hard was it for you to find last years stereo/mono issues?  My Best Buy and B&N had a few, and Target none.  Even in the 90's they were breaking open boxes, handing them out to first day buyers.  Waiting in line to get "your" copy.  Asking the clerks for the "promo" slicks, stand-ups and whatnot (those Beatle moving heads counter displays from 1964 come to mind) - much more exciting to have in hand, on the day.  When can we get it on Spotify, the "download" deal, or buying on Amazon has exactly zero excitement for me.  Now, if you're just waiting to see if the price will drop...maybe.  Or the UPS truck...   Some "special" extras are offered, but that's rare.  I can still look forward to something coming out, but it's not the same.  In fairness, I will add that my 13 year old nieces get real excited about "artists" like One Direction, but by then they were just hating on "last year's model"/ the Jonas Bros., Beiber, whoever - it's not like waiting for the years it took to get 15 Big Ones into the stores.  And they don't get the kind of hard copy promo stuff that was afforded to records up to the mid-2000's when B&M fell off the face of the earth.  I read somewhere here the other day that there is no Virgin store in London.  Well, we still have the trader shops.
Thanks from me too for the photo of the Big Ones' promo.  I do remember it.  I was not able to get one.  Even back then clerks were selling to the highest bidder.  In 1976 Zeppelin and Wings got top dollar.
Since this is about the cards, I will say, buy only for what YOU think they are worth.  I have a banana box full of cards from the 80's/90's.  Anybody here have the Roger Rabbit or Universal Monster sets?  Those import James Bond?  Very few of them increase in value. I'm glad to have them though.  And all my Beatle cards hold special value, to me.  If the Beach Boys would have got the offer back in the 60's, I would have bought them... now, those would be worth big bucks.  If I see a pack of the new ones,  I'll get some.

Also have a "Love You" mobile (same size as the 15 Big Ones) and a 4' x 4' of that album among other posters and other sh*t. It helped to kiss the asses of people working at the record stores or knowing retailers at the record swap meets. Warners didn't hold back on their promotion of the Beach Boys records in the 70's. A lot of in-store paper items and other promotional stuff. Same with the CBS/Caribou records.

You're right about being a new fan and the record store thrill. I really am jealous of that experience, as being a newer fan as of 2000. I do get a thrill when going to my usual record/antique stores and looking for what Beach Boys products are available, but it's def not the same as the experiences older fans have.

The whole record store promo items, that sounds like a new thread that should happen unless one has already been started. All I have, that was given to me, is the front cover posters for the LA album. It's 6 different posters of each postcard on the front cover- LA, Beach Boys sign, Lady Lynda, Here Comes the Night, Sumahama, and Full Sail.

Anyone have those? I know LA was promoted like no other album, promo records, tshirts, frisbees, and so on...so they might not be worth much, but to quote Boba Fett: "it's (he's) worth a lot to me."

But I'm curious: The two of you are saying there are individual posters for each postcard? I don't remember seeing anything except the posters of the front cover.
And there were 9 postcards, not 6( you probably just typed 6 instead of 9 by mistake)

Since these new cards, in fact every new card pack sold, are sold in those shrink-wrapped and sealed packs, it's all but impossible to do the old dealer trick of opening and ironing the "wax pack" closed again after removing the valuable cards. But without any direct evidence or "secrets" to speak of, I'm still thinking there may be some way in the supply chain to identify possibly which runs of the cases, boxes, then packs of cards may be holding the real valuables versus the commons. If people are selling what's being called "hot packs" online, how do they know for sure the pack is "hot"? And how did they get those removed from the normal case of cards which were to go to the retailers for store displays?

There's that part of the chain which I as a kid collecting B-Ball cards had no clue about how it worked. You'd have the cases coming from the factory, shipped out. You'd have those cases perhaps going to a warehouse, and then depending on location to a distributor. We had one nearby who would supply all of the retail shops like the ones I'd go to for my cards, both stores and hobby shops too. They'd order and buy so many boxes which were the ones I'd get access to.

What I didn't realize was just how many interests we'd call "dealers" had access to those cases and boxes before they even hit the retail shelves to be bought as individual packs. And looking back, it was unusual to buy many packs and not get any of the hot "rookie cards" or the other valuables, while you'd go to a trade show and see very expensive sealed cello and rack-packs featuring the most expensive cards of the set staring at you through the cellophane. I thought at the time "How did THEY get that pack???" after I'd be at a retail shop and never see anything at all close to that kind of "hot pack" before hot-pack was even a term.

So I thought there was something up. And like the wax-pack debacles, it just felt like I wasn't getting a fair shake, and my access to the good cards was through paying a dealer his inflated price versus buying a retail pack and getting lucky in finding those good cards.

I'm not suggesting anything of the sort with these BB's cards and packs, but in a hobby (and industry) that was fraught with collusion, inside deals, artificially inflated demands and values, and a general sense of smarminess among the bigger-money dealers, I wouldn't doubt there's a production or shipping code that can be cracked even before the packs of cards reach your local Target store for purchase. And as you see Ebay full of offers for the really good cards that you might buy a full case on your own initiative and never see, was it a total act of randomness and good luck that put those really special cards into the hands of the bigger hobby dealers versus someone at Target buying a few packs?

But I digress...as I said it's a fun pursuit, it's fun opening the packs, I used to enjoy the hobby, but it's not overall a hobby that brokers itself on goodwill and honesty. And that's not suggesting anything about these cards, but I'm just on the soapbox venting for a bit here. Old wounds, and all of that... ;D

All good points, tho!  I'm by no means an expert on these cards, as I've only bougten 7 packs; but 7 without finding anything makes me suspicious. as someone else pointed out, I wonder if the packs they're selling on Ebay are really Hot. It's really difficult to follow eachj and everyone to see if the feedback justifies the contents. It's hard for me to believe that these sellers would be selling un-opened packs guaranteeing auotographs, for starting bids of 99 cents, when some autographed cards are selling for $99 !!

and if some e-bay scammer is watching our site, you'll get it quick...  Just sayin', if it's true they can tell which packs have "special" cards, we'll know.
Note to Mikie,  You are one of the few folks here I know that lives in an area where there are still many retail shops (the Bay area).  Is there any promo stuff around?  Like maybe something for the new Beatles release?  You know, something we might care about.  I'm going to drive over to Rhino next week and look into this a bit more.  If anyone was getting stuff here in upstate NY, that would be the place.  They may even have the BB cards.

You should start the thread, and get Mikie to post pics of all his stuff as a starting point!

I have one of those. And quite a few other posters and ads and frisbees and buttons and other stuff promoting 15 Big Ones. There's a 4' x 4' poster among others.
I have those. In addition to a promo set of 6 actual postcards from the L.A. Light album cover. Also have the 4ft. by 4ft. poster of L.A. Light.

But I'm curious: The two of you are saying there are individual posters for each postcard? I don't remember seeing anything except the posters of the front cover.
And there were 9 postcards, not 6( you probably just typed 6 instead of 9 by mistake)

Haven't looked at them in years, Bgas.  Just remember having the complete set of postcards, however many there are.  Also have an L.A. Light vinyl picture disc.

And to be clear. I am also unaware of posters for each picture. Never seen any of those before.

So, back to you punkinhead; are you saying you have individual posters fro each postcard? Never heard of anything like that as a promo item. definitely not at the time of release.

Maybe there were really supposed to be 12?  I've never seen any other than the 9 I have, but I guess that doesn't mean they're not out there; mcourse I have two sets from widely separate places suggesting otherwise.
Perhaps Carl didn't want his represented in this manner?

Just a little FYI - The printing plates are so thin/light that a pack containing 7 cards and a plate...weighs exactly the same as 8 cards (.06)

So you are not going to find a Plate by weighing a pack.  ::)

Comments, anyone? I think they did a really nice job with these cards. I'll post another batch later.

I can contribute to the cause...

ETCHINGS:

Artist Proof & Concert Gear cards:

GOOD for you!!  Were these from Hobby or Retail packs( or both)?
I haven't found squat in the retail packs I've bought. Did get an empty retail box, tho( emptied it myself, onto the store rack)
By the way, what takes up all the extra space in the Hobby boxes? They're one third larger than the Retail boxes( and they both have 24 packs per box)

All from Hobby boxes - they have spacers inside the boxes on both ends so all the packs are in the middle.

I would like an empty retail box too but I cant find a full one!  :p

At the risk of being a detail-tragic nerd, is the concert gear sample from the Al shirt in the first picture? Al didn't wear many bright shirts last year so maybe old stock.

You should start the thread, and get Mikie to post pics of all his stuff as a starting point!

I have one of those. And quite a few other posters and ads and frisbees and buttons and other stuff promoting 15 Big Ones. There's a 4' x 4' poster among others.

Thanxx Mikie, that clears it for me from your end!
So, back to you punkinhead; are you saying you have individual posters fro each postcard? Never heard of anything like that as a promo item. definitely not at the time of release.

Here's pics of the front and back of the cards I have( and the mailing envelope they came in); not certain how easy it will be to read the back side of each card....

Yeah, there's a poster per each postcard...but just the front cover postcards.

Yeah, there's a poster per each postcard...but just the front cover postcards.

Hmm, that's interesting. Never seen/heard of anyone having these. Are these definitely items issued by Caribou? ( not an aftermarket supplier)
Can you show them?

At the risk of being a detail-tragic nerd, is the concert gear sample from the Al shirt in the first picture? Al didn't wear many bright shirts last year so maybe old stock.

(I'm ashamed I even noticed or care to ask!  :thud)

The back of the cards says the fabric swatches are "concert-worn" material - one would assume that on an Al card it would be from one of his shirts, but they dont actually say that.

Might be from a loud sock or colorful underwear for all I know!!  :lol

Didn't see the shows last year, but I think the swatch bears a resmblance to parts of the shirt shown on this card:

At the little teeny weeny show I saw Al do in Gilroy, CA in 2005, he was wearing that exact shirt! I looked back at all the pics I took of that show, and he was wearing the same shirt and t-shirt, etc. I wonder who took that photo, and if it was from the same day. I know, random.  :lol

Neat!  Did you have to buy any of these separately on Ebay? or you got them all from hobby sets?
Since the cards seem to be the same whether you get hobby or retail, what's the benefit of retail I wonder? other than a slight $$ markup...

I wonder what the licensing fee to the BBs was for these cards; Have to be something substantial, I would think, for each of them to take the time to sign 70 cards, much less providing all the photos and clothes for swatches.  Could all of the pics have been licensed thru Capitol?

Gilroy Dave was there.  He probably took the picture.

Looking at all the pics I took, I realize it was probably a different date. My awkward picture with Al taken before the show is in early evening, and he didn't have the shirt on yet. And that's the end of needless sleuthing.  :lol

Here is a picture of 4 of the autographed cards.  I'm still trying to find one of the David Marks signed cards.

Every time I see that Mike Love tank top card I reconsider having a hobby box on my Christmas list. Bring me the box Santa but for the sake of all things decent let me not have that card in that box!

Haha, I saw that. That's nuts. Wish I had the money to throw around to have two boxes to own, it'd be Christmas everyday if I could do that. Were those the hobby cards? The box looked a little different from the retail.

Got a few additional packs last night, got an artist proof card, a sounds of summer 45 Heroes and Villains card, an Al Jardine In Their Own Words with surfer foil, and a big white SLUG!

I just got a box of the hobby cards. I have the entire 120 cards, 2 concert gears (Mike and Dave), and several of the foil cards, Sounds Of Summer cards, Honors cards, 4 On The Record cards (All Summer Long, Sunflower, a gold Live At Knebworth, In Concert), only 1 Artist Proof card. No autographs or picks. Coolest cards ever from a rock band! When I was a kid I used to collect the Kiss cards from 1978. I had thousands of them. Collecting these Beach Boys cards have brought back exciting memories of collecting cards from my childhood...except this time the quality is superior.

Had to be the hobby boxes they are the only boxes with Concert Gear cards - I was jealous of some of those picks though.  ;)

I know that playing another group's latest hit was of the time and quite a dated idea nowadays, but I think it would have been so cool to hear this with Brian on falsetto while Mike would have killed those bass lines 'why don't you come out...'

(We do of course get a glimpse of Brian singing Four Seasons on Surfers Rule.)

Even on the road, Brian discovered ways to bring fresh harmony to The Beach Boys' sound.  A prime example came in 1962 when Brian decided to add Sherry (by The Four Seasons) to the setlist...

I'm a shy guy, so my gf asked the Collector's Connection guy if he had any Beach Boys cards and he said he could order a box and probably sell the packs at $4.50 a piece. He seemed impressed that you could actually open a pack and potentially get a piece of their shirts or an autograph. He said they may be in within a week if he decides to go through with it. He'll email us. Not too shabby  :3d

So I might have a card dealer here pretty soon lol.

Thats around a 40% inflated price per pack. A retail pack goes for $2.99. Better to buy a hobby box of 24 packs online for around $80.

Well, Target for one...but not all of their stores. If you want a shot at the basic set (120 cards) and can stand the "bidding game" I  would check ebay as dealers are stripping out the hits and then trying to sell the plain vanilla cards at much less than Hobby Box price. As for Retail Boxes, I do not think one box would have the basic set and you are bound to get many more dupes that route.  ::)

There still have been no signs anywhere of the David Marks autographed cards.  This seems kind of strange since there have been multiples of the other guys for sale on the secondary market.

It really seems funny that none of the David Marks signature cards have turned up.  There have been no reported finds of any of these cards and there are no pictures to be found of them.  It's been confirmed that David did sign at least 70 of the cards, but where are they?  It is just chance that none have surfaced, or is Panini intentionaly withholding them?

I have all the Etchings now except one (Dennis, and I have seen it) so those have all been released.

Every hobby box will have a couple of Concert Gear cards, there are not any picks in them though. You have to go with retail packs to get those.

I still intend to post some more pics of the cards maybe I will find the time this weekend.

I'm still interested in buying the little packs (cuz that's all I can afford), but after finishing off the box at my local Target, they never got another box so, I guess that's it for me (locally)...granted, I prolly have most of the 120 set, but a handful.

Anyone hear about winners of the mail-send in that was on the back? I sent two from my household.  ;)

Stopped by the Target on the way home from work and they finally got a box of these cards. Or they've had them for a month and not a single person has purchased a pack. Noticed that some of the packs were noticeably thinner or thicker than others so I grabbed 3 of the larger ones cause those are the ones with the concert used shirts or guitar picks or whatever. Got one of the Brian commemorative picks and 2 white inserts to fool you into thinking you're going to get one of  the concert used shirts or guitar picks or whatever.

Not sure if worth it or not.

Yeah, I'm with you Bgas, I bought a little more than 3/4 of the packs at the box and got 4-5 white inserts and no guitar pic/concert gear/autograph...oh well.

Bgas is right, you spent about 10$ and got a pic! You're very lucky!
I spent about 40-50$ and the best thing I got was the box.

My hobby box just arrived in the post for my birthday.

First pack open - only Al Jardine stage worn clothes card! Awesome.

24 packs. So far I've openend 7 packs - I'm trying to make it last all day whilst I drink wine and have a couple of smokes.

I'll keep you updated...  ;D

Ok, here's the update you are all clearly clamouring for;

Opened full hobby box. Got full 120 set with loads of gold surfer imprints, 2x Clothing Cards (Al and Bruce), 1x Artists proof, loads of cool little collections.

Then my friend came round and we got drunk and made this with the swaps....

How was your Friday night?

I've gotta say . . . I really enjoyed your last two posts, your enthusiasm over the trading cards, the wine, the smokes, your collage.  Thanks for sharing.  They are pretty cool, aren't they?

My daughter just found a few of the small packs in the local Dollar store near her house. she bought all they had.  I had forgotten about them being discussed herE.   She gave them to me for a Christmas stocking stuffer today. Pretty cool.  I'll have to inspect them more closely for signatures?

had these trading cards come out some 30 years ago, hell I would've been jumping butter beans to get the complete set.
now I don't own one card, nor do I really care in collecting, unless a complete set came up for sale.
great idea, they were just 30 years too late when card collecting was 'cool'.

In terms of getting a complete set, I believe a full box of the cards guarantees that you'll get a full base set.

I got a kick out of these when they came out; beyond strange. It was fun when they were at some Target stores for a short time. The best part is that they didn't just use the same stock photos we see all the time; they used some weird and occasionally unflattering 1970s and 80s pics of the guys.

Too funny - I got a pack of these cards this year as a gift too! My first pack ever, and I have to say they're pretty damned cool. I may have to seek out one of those stores selling them, it took me back to my days collecting baseball cards in the early 80's.

I even scored one of those apparently one-per-box "gold" etched cards...no autographs or stage clothing/guitar pick cards, but still I have to say I was pretty psyched to get that etched gold thingy. Not bad for a one in eight chance per pack!

The cards are neat even if you don't collect cards (seeing one of Brian playing bass in the 70's sporting his red and white Rhonda t-shirt was a surprise), and I'd say open the packs if you get them. Life is too short to stare at sealed packs instead of flipping through the cards to see what you got in the pack.

True story - Yesterday after getting that pack of cards for Christmas, I had business near two Dollar Trees. I ended up finding some packs at the second location, but at the first I didn't see any on display. I asked the person working the register if they had any trading cards, Beach Boys trading cards. Without missing a beat, she picked up the PA/intercom phone and made an announcement over the store PA: "There is a customer here who is asking if we have any BEACH BOYS TRADING CARDS"...waited for a bit...then from the back of the store comes a faint "no...".

It reminded me of Monty Python's "Cheese Shop" sketch for some reason.  ;D The only words missing were "we're fresh out of those..."

Dollar a pack, yes.
I dropped by 2 of the Dollar Trees today. One didn't have them; the other just had an empty box. Will keep looking.

I've been to 2 more, still no luck, unless they want to sell me the empty box.

I opened a box and found this cool card.  How rare is it?

If it's one of 4 actual plates used to print those cards, I'd say you got a pretty cool find, 1 of 4! Has to be more valuable than the average cards, although I have no clue on value - check Ebay perhaps? Haven't been into the trading card market for almost 30 years since I sold most of my sports collection to buy a new Telecaster.  :)

I keep checking those Dollar Tree stores; found one pack a few weeks ago; found another one yesterday. I don't have many of the cards, less than 50. For a dollar a pack, though, it's a good investment.

There are only a few examples of the "Plate" cards on eBay at the moment, but it looks like they go for the $35-$40 range, give or take.

I suppose that makes sense. There are presumably four plate cards for each of the 120 (not sure if there are plate cards for the non-base set cards), so there are at least 480 total plate cards out there.

It appears, not surprisingly, that the autographed cards (even if not as rare as any single "Plate" card that is technically one of a kind) are the most sought after and seem to go in the $150-$200 range; occasionally higher (usually Brian cards), and occasionally lower (sorry, Dave).

I still totally got a kick out of these cards. After I bought a bunch of packs at Target, and then a box online, I kind of lost steam because it's impossible to collect all the chase cards without dropping way too much money. But the cards were so bizarre and out of left field; we're pretty lucky they ever happened. Considering prices have dropped on eBay and boxes can be had for cheap and leftover stock is being funneled out to "Dollar Tree" stores, I'm guessing the cards probably didn't sell super well. So I'm somehow doubting we'll get a "Series 2" set.  :lol

The sets must have flown off the shelves of Dollar Tree, though, cause I keep checking the stores, and have only got 2 packs so far. But they've got tons of baseball, football and WWF cards.

I've had better luck @ the last couple Dollar Tree's I've visited. Got 6 packs at one, 3 at another. Now I am getting a lot of duplicates. I don't expect to ever get a complete set, just going to give the duplicates to a friend.
