Title: Would YOU buy a Mike Love Solo box set?
Post by: punkinhead on September 16, 2013, 08:07:38 PM
Yeah, I asked it.  ;D

If for some reason he wanted to finally release (and remaster) First Love, Country Love, Unleash the Love (the newer solo project), a re-release of Looking Back With Love, Catch a Wave, Salute to Nascar, and Summertime Cruisin'; would you purchase it?

Include singles: Jingle Bell Rock, Lets Party, Santa's Goin to Kokomo, Be True to Your Bud, and Hungry Heart as well.

Perhaps with bonus material from the likes of Mike And Dean material, Celebration, Endless Summer Band, and some live material of Mike and Bruce?

Would you purchase it for as much as they're selling MIC?

I would, of course, I haven't had the money to even buy MIC yet.

I would get it... but I'm not sure why I would get it.

Maybe not for quality's sake, but really on a curiosity level....

I'd probably spend about $50 at most on it.

No, but I probably wouldn't be able to resist downloading it if I came across a torrent.   :)

I'm only buying the Mike Love box set if it comes with an audio TM lesson from the master Lovester himself.

UMM i have all those cd"s allready and i dont listen to them much at all.. Altho i do like Unleash the love + Nascar + Celebration stuff..If i found it used for a decent price i might bite tho.

That depends: Will 'Salute to Nascar' be included in regular-grade vinyl or 180 gram?

Title: Re: Would YOU buy a Mike Love Solo box set?
Post by: Jukka on September 16, 2013, 10:34:29 PM
I most definitely would. I'm a completist, but in addition to that I'd be really interested to hear the stuff. After all, Mike is a talented songwriter, and the little I've heard of his solo material is miles better than anything he's done for the Beach Boys since Big Sur (aside from Kokomo and Sumahama).

Title: Re: Would YOU buy a Mike Love Solo box set?
Post by: Eric Aniversario on September 16, 2013, 10:44:51 PM
I'd buy it! I'm a completist, and it still bothers me to this day that I was never able to get a genuine copy of Carl's first album on the Japanese pressing in 1990. I have Blondie's solo stuff, almost everything by Bruce that has officially been released on cd, and all the other bb solo stuff that has been officially put out there. I have 2 bootlegs of lbwl, which are both poor quality. So I'd welcome a boxed set like this. I'd pay $100 for a good quality release with all those albums mentioned. Throw in the Celebration albums,  and I'd make it $125

Title: Re: Would YOU buy a Mike Love Solo box set?
Post by: Alex on September 16, 2013, 11:17:25 PM
I'll pay $1000 as long as it has 5 different mixes of Rockin' the Man in the Boat!  :lol

Post by: Mike's Beard on September 16, 2013, 11:19:32 PM
If it contained Looking Back With Love, his work with Celebration and his stuff with Dean and was about a third the price of MIC then I would buy it.

Title: Re: Would YOU buy a Mike Love Solo box set?
Post by: chrs_mrgn on September 16, 2013, 11:20:41 PM
I think the I cousin of everything Celebration would make it worth it. Not sure how much I would pay though.

Title: Re: Would YOU buy a Mike Love Solo box set?
Post by: Jim V. on September 16, 2013, 11:30:01 PM
I hate to say it, but I'm sure I probably would.

That said, I've been scavenging the internet to try to find a copy of that Summertime Crusin' album by Mike and Bruce. So I gotta admit I'm pretty weak on this kinda stuff. I just like having it. Why? I haven't a clue.

And while we're at it, anybody got a copy of Summertime Cruisin' to sell?

Be True to Your Bud

Do I even want to ask about this?

Title: Re: Would YOU buy a Mike Love Solo box set?
Post by: The Shift on September 16, 2013, 11:53:51 PM
Afraid I'd stump up. I think I have everything that's been mentioned above but mostly in poor quality. There's a heap of Mike & Dean and Mike & Adrian stuff as well "out there" but of the little I've heard I'd pay a bit extra to keep most of that OFF such a box set.

But I'd still prefer to see another Beach Boys set hit the market first.

Only if it was very cheap.

First Love and Unleash the Love deserve a release at some point.

Not Country Love or the stuff with Adrian Baker though that's for sure.

A better question:

Could anybody (including Mike Love) honestly listen to an entire Mike Love solo box set?

Of course I would, just as I would any other member of The Beach Boys. For me, Mike is the voice of The Beach Boys, and I can't imagine the band without him, so a solo box would be most welcome.

I wouldn't, nor would I buy a Carl, Al, Or Bruce box.

I would buy a Dennis box, if it wasn't too expensive. I would take the Mike, Carl, and Al boxes for free, and if you give me at least 10 Euros with it, I'll take the Bruce box too. That is, if the Bruce box would concentrate on his pre-BB work, I'll also take it for free. :-D

Title: Re: Would YOU buy a Mike Love Solo box set?
Post by: smilethebeachboysloveyou on September 17, 2013, 01:42:31 AM
Disc 1: Looking Back with Love
Disc 2: First Love (even though it was recorded before LBWL, I think it would make more sense to start with the officially released one)
Disc 3: Unleash the Love/Mike Love, Not War

That wouldn't be a bad box at all.  Then again, most people seem to hate LBWL, so what do I know?

But it would be a deal-breaker if they included Country Love.

Title: Re: Would YOU buy a Mike Love Solo box set?
Post by: Nicko1234 on September 17, 2013, 02:13:07 AM
A much more sensible and desirable release I would have thought would be a 1 or 2 disc set featuring the best stuff from Celebration and Mike's solo stuff. That actually probably wouldn't be too bad.

I've compiled myself a single set with the best of Celebration / First Love / LBWL / MLNW / some assorted tracks. It's not bad, let's say as good a listen as any 78 - 85 Beach Boys' album can aspire to be.

It would be good to have the First Love tracks in good quality.

I would only buy it if he worked on all the songs with himself in a room. AND if it had extensive liner notes explicitly comparing Country Love to Hitler.

AND if it came with fake beardage on the packaging. That you could stroke and fondle while listening to the unreleased tracks.

Why, you could make it look like a book! A disgusting, beardy book.

One of his very finest! The backing track is almost Kate Bush-like, or something Paul Simon would produce; Mike's vocal is really soothing and heartfelt, with great backing harmonies on the fade.

I've got two versions: one more elaborately produced than the other,. I personally prefer the version that's slightly more stripped back, where the flutes(?) are held back until the fade (which to me makes it them more effective). But both versions are utterly wonderful though! To me, 'Viggie' is to Mike what 'Lady' is to Dennis.

'Viggie' and 'Glow Crescent Glow' would've been more worthwhile additions to MIC than 'Brian's Back' and 'Goin To The Beach', but hey ho...

No, but I probably wouldn't be able to resist downloading it if I came across a torrent.
Same here. Don't see the logic in buying the records if I can easily find them on-line in a good audio quality. However, as Mike's solo box set would certainly be a  limited edition, since his solo songs aren't popular & therefore, wouldn't sell the mass market & appear in the Internet as a free download, I'd hastily order it for any cost. Who knows what's left in the vault yet, plus I'm genuinely interested to hear Celebration stuff, "...Not War", "Country Love" & Adrian Baker.

Granted a Love solo box would contain lots of guff but the guy has turned out some real musical curiosities that are worth a listen. I used to have most of his unreleased stuff and Viggie is indeed a gem. If anyone has had success in finding Summertime Cruisin' I'd like to meet them, I've been after that one for years now!

I'd definitely by a single disc anthology.... with the hope that there's a pretty heavy beach boy presence in some form or another (other than Mike obviously...)

Yeah, I think if you took a couple of the Celebration songs, 2-3 tracks from Looking Back With Love, "Happy Birthday America", "Kokomo" from Symphonic Sounds (you know Mike would want that song represented somehow), and the "best of" Mike's unreleased solo catalogue, you could cobble together a listenable, single CD comp. However, the only potential buyers would be a small sample of Beach Boys' diehards...

Most certainly. I would then proceed to do horrible creative things to it while I videotape my actions, put it on youtube, go viral and get invited by Brian's band to one of their concerts.
