Easy- "Little Girl (You're My Miss America)"

An unwelcome overdose of gooeyness on an album otherwise refreshingly free of it.

 Bad choice, friend.  "Moon Dawg" is one of the few real surf songs on the album.

 It was a toss up between "County Fair" and "Little Girl You're My Miss America", both of which feature rather insipid lead vocals, but I vote for "County Fair" as worst track.  

 

Aw, 'Little Girl (You're My Miss America)' is a nice little song. So is 'County Fair'.

Ten Little Indians for me.

Moon Dawg (no offense) was too sloppy. I like the instrumentals on the next LP much better. I vote for Moon Dawg. Miss America is just an innocent early sixties ballad, Ten Little Indians isn't single material but fun anyhow, and Summertime Blues is very garage band. I also dislike the Shift. Just silly.

Ten Little Indians, I guess.  None of the arrangements are that inspired, but I especially don't think it worked with the speedy run-through of a simple traditional song.

The clock song is meant to be satirical so I don't mind it. Plus the chorus is kind of darkly funny.

One of the worst songs I've ever heard, if not the worst.

Surfin' Safari is easily their worst record they made until the mid 70's stinkers and I'll show it no mercy.

When I first heard about Nilsson's Ten Little Indians I thought it was going to be the same song... Nilsson's is much better.  :lol

What's the matter with County Fair? It's all subjective now, isn't it. I can listen to all 12 tracks, but I like some more than others. Ten Little Indians being the least of them.

Summertime Blues… just doesn't have the vibe if the original which makes it stand apart.

I'm just wondering what specifically people hate about it. For me it doesn't really stand apart from the other tracks in any way, it's just kinda bland is all.

No track on this album stands apart as being especially bad, any more than any one of a group of midgets stands out as being especially short.

Land Ahoy, Their Hearts, and Lonely Sea would have made this album better.

That is why it is my least favorite. There are few bland tunes on there, but it was their first album. The cool thing about listening to the first three albums is hearing how much they progressed in a year.

True. The decision not to include Their Hearts was a bizarre one. But maybe it was felt it didn't fit in with the formula.

I really dig the album, always have..... the development was astonishing from Brian & Co with following albums.....

I get a kick out of listening to the tracking sessions from SOT unsurpassed masters...... love hearing them putting the tracks down and
hearing the rawness and simplicity of how it all started......

glad to have a sealed 62 copy of it in my collection...  :hat

I like "Moon Dawg" for how it's the only surf "instrumental" they did which features vocal harmony.

I'll keep saying Summertime Blues until it's gone.

It was the second most voted for track in round one, so I wouldn't be surprised to see it voted off this round.

It's just a vote. It's not like we're expelling it from the album forever. As is any other thread here discussing songs, we are not all in perfect agreement about what is good and not so good. It's just for fun.

With this particular slate of songs really anything could go at any time. I personally think 409 will stand as the sole survivor here. That and County Fair are about the only tracks without votes yet, I think....

It's just for fun, yes. As was my comment.

Man, I do not understand how "Ten Little Indians" can get so many votes. It's both cute coming from a group of kids and also possibly the most hilariously inappropriate song in their released catalog. Coming from the band who put out "Hey Little Tomboy", that's saying a lot. So, so much charm on that song. BREAKS MAH HEART :'(

Same goes for "County Fair", except it's not inappropriate, just a cute, loveable little song. SO LOVEABLE. Did you guys even notice the seamlessly applied organ part in the chorus is actually playing "Over The Waves" in 4/4 instead of waltz timing? That's so clever! Well, for their age. But come on! Even when Brian's ruthless father had a knife in his back and said "Dance, monkey!", Brian was putting a lot of thought and effort into this stuff. Folks are so ready to write this album off, but damn it, the early signs of genius are all over the place. Maybe not fully there yet, but certainly implied or in some kind of embryonic form.

I'm just glad nobody voted for "Chug-A-Lug" because "wat the fuck who writes a song about root beer i only like serious music, man" or I might have to really go fucking apewaste on you all, here.

You answered your own question. "Cute" from a group of kids. Teenagers in a Rock & Roll band singing a kiddie song. It's too cute. Doesn't belong on an album with surf and Rock & Roll originals and covers. It had no business being a single. It didn't promote the band or do them justice in the Surf/Rock culture. Ever hear a garage band cover Ten Little Indians?

If I sang this song at work I'd be called into HR for harassment. Lot of East Indians in my company. ;D

It's not even the political correctness. I mean, maybe a little, but I understand there's a huge difference between "Ten Little Indians" and something like "Blurred Lines" since the former wasn't written by a 36 year old dude in 2013.

I think my main problem is that it has too many clashing ideas. Native American chanting, surf guitar, nursery rhyme melody. It sounds ambitious on paper but the execution is lacking. Too busy an arrangement and too rushed a performance for my liking.

That's something I can fully agree with you on. Love the melody, love the lyrics, love the spoken parts, love the organ, love all of it. Great Mike vocal. Not among his technical best but I just can't imagine anyone else singing it.

Kinda of surprised at votes for Cuckoo Clock and Moon Dawg.  I always thought Cuckoo Clock had a nice tinge of melancholy on the verses, while Moon Dawg the most polished song on the record.  Not saying they're great tracks by any means, but I find they present something interesting in a largely unremarkable collection of songs.

My vote again goes to Chug-a-Lug.

I like Moon Dawg. Voting it off is liking it a little less than the others. The album is raw, but I still like quite a bit. It's the Beach Boys becoming the Beach Boys.:)

I actually like most of the album.  In a few rounds, this will be quite difficult since many of the tracks have quite a bit of sentimental value for me, even though I obviously don't consider Surfin' Safari their best album.

Heads You Win, Tails I Lose - my least favorite on the record. Irritating.

Also, "Ten Little Indians" is a very catchy tune and should have been eliminated around the halfway point. But at least that ho-hum Cochran cover is gone.

Surfin' Safari made our Top 100 poll last year at like #76 or whatever, so it's pretty much a lock to win. Sorry if that spoils anything for you.

That said, this sort of polling allows for a divisive tune to not win. For example, a song could be the favorite of 60% and the least favorite of 40% and end up going home first. Basically, every round we're eliminating the song that has the most haters bothering to vote.

Yeah I agree...which is why a song like 409 may just conquer Surfin' Safari. To a casual fan it's no question SS would trump all but I think fanatics like ourselves may prefer 409...we shall see. SS already received a vote to go in round 1 so ya never know.

Yeah, but one vote is insignificant when 90% of the vote seems to be going to three songs right now. Once they're out, that frees up a lot of room for other tracks to feel our wrath.  >:D

It's weird, I completely forgot about this album.  For some reason, I always think of Surfin' USA as the first Beach Boys album.  I mean I've heard this album and I know it's their first album and yet it's such a mediocre effort.  Besides its title track and the historical fact that it was the first Beach Boys album, it just has so little going for it.

But what about the eventual winner of Survivor #1, 409?

Arrrghhh to "The Shift"'s departue.  I think it's the album's closest indicator to what was coming next musically (great Dave and Carl interplay), and the vocals step it up a bit with Mike in better form than some of the other numbers.

"Surfin'", although I never listen to the strange album edit, only the single edit. I really had a tough time choosing between this and "Safari", and it's probably better from a compositional standpoint, but I think (I THINK :'( ) I just like "Surfin'" more.

Where it all began.... it's actually rather fascinating looking back almost five years later and seeing how far we've come. How much the Survivor rounds have changed - at least aesthetically speaking.

I dunno about the rest of you, but given the chance to do it all over again..... some of my votes would be rather different  :lol. Though if we were to do it all over again, maybe give it another decade or two

... or three.  :lol

We never did finish The Beach Boys Solo Survivor though.
