Title: a 'smiley smile' chat room?
Post by: bringahorseinhere? on July 06, 2013, 09:57:56 AM
I'm surprised the board hasn't got a chat room of some degree.....

it's quite busy on this site, has it ever been considered or has there been one in the past?

is there a reason why there isn't one?

would love to chat to other 'freaks' like me!

I want a chat room too.

A web based IRC type of thing.

This would be very cool, and probably not that hard to set up.

It seems simple enough to set up

I know web programming and installing a chat is super easy. An AJAX chat is to prefer over a PHP chat, since you don't need to reload the whole page when using an AJAX chat.

There are some open source AJAX chats available for everyone to use.

This one's pretty cool: http://demo.estreamchat.com/ChatRoom.aspx. It's a jQuery chat and works like charm.

I think you'll have to ask in the 'Welcome to the Smiley Smile Board' page, I'm not sure if the mods are ignoring suggestions for the site here or just not noticing 'em... there was already a thread for this not too long ago (http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,14712.0.html (http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,14712.0.html))  but not much of a response. I'd be down for it though, a chatroom sounds fun  :-D

I haven't used a chatroom since 2003.

The main purpose for a chatroom is to pick up chicks, isn't it?  Didn't chatrooms kinda go out with AOL?

When Chuck Kelley did his Heroes and Villains show on Luxuriamusic.com, I used to regularly stop by. It was nice hearing the music and chatting with Beach Boys freaks worldwide.

I seem to recall the old cabinessence board had a chat room, or something that worked in the same manner.  Mistaken or not, I'd totally be down with a chat here, especially late nights, east coast, US time.  Sometimes you feel like talking about or sharing some info on the Boys, regarding something that doesn't warrant a new thread or fit in any existing ones.

So real time, dependent on who's around and chats probably wiped after a certain length of time?  Wouldn't we likely end up with a US/UK-Euro/Aus divide…?

Hi John.....

Yes, 'real time' would be right.... it could be could to discuss things in further detail without posting on the board and reading through 'bable' at times....

people could ask more specific questions or comment in further detail about topics that don't necessarily need to be posted....

it has its 'pros' and 'cons'......... it could also turn into WW3 if it is not monitored or moderated........ people being people, that's probably the downfall...

it's just an idea..... but you are right to a degree, it is what we are already doing here on the board.

Thanks all for the comments....

I think a main concern would be archiving; this board is a terrific resource for fans and writers alike, and it would be a shame if some conversations yielding gallons of info were lost to time, or left unenlightened because whatever honoured guest of historian didn't happen to be online at the time.

This board does have one or two shortcomings but they're seriously overridden by its values…

Title: Re: a 'smiley smile' chat room?

I'm still up or it, could just be a place for off-topic conversation or trading opinions on albums and whatnot. Maybe it'll be dead within a few months, maybe it'll take over the board entirely, but it's worth a try I think.

Thanks 'Mikie' and 'Real Beach Boy'.....

while I did suggest it, John has an important point,

"it would be a shame if some conversations yielding gallons of info were lost to time, or left unenlightened because whatever honoured guest of historian didn't happen to be online at the time"........

I got to thinking about that......hopefully those sort of things would indeed be posted on the board, or yes, have such things archived so we all can enjoy

weeks, months or years later.

It would be worthwhile trying out for sure...... just a suggestion.

Perhaps they could just choose a chatroom where sections are able to be archived and viewed at a later date? Surely that must exist? If it does not, surely someone could add that capability in?

Yep. Just store every line in a database.

I'd vote against a chatroom simply because it's hard enough having to deal with the misfits, trolls and retards here without having to do it in real time. That said, it would have the decided benefit of shutting up those who keep bleating "well just don't read his posts, then".   ;D

It's kind of you offering to serve as a real time moderator and referee. I'm sure that will make for a suitably friendly, welcoming atmosphere in this hypothetical chat room. I think the hammer should be brought down especially hard on poor grammar and people that don't wear yellow on Sunday. After a hard day making stern yet fair judgments with a twinkling eye, you can then you can make parents with special needs kids disgusted by using the word "retards" in 2013.

On the plus side, think of the cliques and gossip that could flourish in a barely comprehensible manner! Somebody post edited highlights.

Speaking of barely comprehensible, I think I agree AND disagree with you so cancelled myself out. I'll get my coat.

That's how I post on here, I don't need a chat room for that.

Personally I think that the moderator on this hypothetical chat room should get voted in every day. Think of the crazy power struggles that would ensue. The arse licking, the back stabbing. Pass me my hypo-tension pills, I'm logging on.......

A/S/L is "age", "sex" and "location".

People who were around some 15 years ago remember that infamous acronym. :) It was used anywhere and everywhere.

What's the diff between what we have here and a chatroom?
Mr. Manning, I wanted to ask exactly the same question but you were faster. As it is known, "chat" is a synonym of "conversation" which we already have with other "BBs freaks" since the whole board's dedicated to the fans of this specific group. After checking the link given by Swedish Frog, I'm going to say the "chat room" idea is rather useless & redundant. Yes, I got now the difference, but it isn't that visible.
However, I'm not against the installment of chat room - if other posters like it, then fine, the majority wins anyway. I myself would definitely ignore this stuff. It's enough for me to talk about The Beach Boys/other music traditionally.

I'd love to have voice chatroom. I am so curious as to whether we would be as disrespectful to each other verbally, than we sometimes are in here with the written word. I'm thinking not, as on the whole we are likely better than that.

Why not then just use Skype, it is by far the best program. All we have to do is to create a group there.

Pros:

  • It's small
  • It has all the functions we need (chat, video and so on)
  • It's Swedish (well, was at least)
  • You can create groups easily
  • It never crashes
  • You can send files

Christ on a cracker.

Skype is huge, proprietary software.

IRC *is* group chat, motherfucker.

IRC has, like, 20 years of reliability backing it up, and its implementations are *enormous.* It's not a single monolithic service, it's a protocol like http.

It is the gold standard of online group chat. I cannot emphasize how vastly superior it is to other things.

So? Skype also has the group chat function.

IRC has, like, 20 years of reliability backing it up, and its implementations are *enormous.* It's not a single monolithic service, it's a protocol like http.
Cares? There is a reason people use Skype and not IRC these days.

It is the gold standard of online group chat. I cannot emphasize how vastly superior it is to other things.
Slight correction. Was the gold standard 20 years ago when Skype did not exist. Now IRC is as modern as a mosquito in amber.

It's a shame about the mod problem on SwedishFrog's link. That chat was fun.

It's probably getting desperate by this point, but here's a chatroom I tried making:
http://www.chatzy.com/52678211408317 (http://www.chatzy.com/52678211408317)

May as well give it a shot... no signing up with email is needed. (Don't forget to hit "Enter Chat" in the bottom-right corner once you've signed in; that always used to confuse me)
I think this thing works on mobile.

Interesting idea.  I'd love to know what would happen if we all met in person.  Who'd get punched out first? The funny thing is I went almost 15 years before I met another fan. Then I came on here and discovered BB fans are all arseholes.  :lol

I think there should be fights. We need to fight for success. Honesty is the best policy. You know what I'm talkin' about Mike?...we've had our differences, but you know what I'm talking about... Pinder...you're flatting dear. Get up on the keyboard. Stop screaming and start posting from your heart. Okay, we got it now, let's go.

I have nothing against disagreements. Can't for the world understand why people are so afraid of other people's opinions.

There has to be a place where the room is set up indefinitely without the room owner having to be there 24/7....right?

The chat room I posted works without an admin: http://www.chatzy.com/52678211408317 (http://www.chatzy.com/52678211408317)

I just created a Smiley Smile Skype group! :)

The best thing about Skype, besides being the best chat tool out there, is you can download it for your computer, smart phone, surf pad, smart tv and other handheld devices. You can also send files easily. :woot

Download Skype (if you use Windows 8 download the desktop version, not the Windows 8 version)
Add me: swedish-frog
I will then invite you to the group, we have already started the discussions in there :)

Ooh, and it was the chatroom's anniversary just yesterday. I have to say, it's been a fun year.  ;D
