Title: MIC Price Discussion Thread.
Post by: Pretty Funky on June 13, 2013, 03:17:38 AM
Try the canadian amazon site. It was cheaper there.

Still is cheaper - when converted into US Dollars the price is $110. But saying that the box is definitely $145 *supports* peoples position that Capitol and The Beach Boys are trying to forcibly rape us.

And for the fourth time, it will be cheaper at importCDs.com

http://www.importcds.com/music/2617315/the-beach-boys-made-in-california

$104.99

Ok. I started a thread for the SMiLE box when that came out, so will do the same now. Hope someone can save some $ using it.

My Amazon UK account is still saying £56.57. Whether this is because I pre-ordered it early I do not know (when I initially put the order through it was priced at over £100). Personally I would recommend pre-ordering it from Amazon UK as - from my own experience at least - once this has been done, the price seems to repeatedly decrease.

Disney Boy because you have pre-ordered it from amazon whatever it was priced at when you put the order in is the maximum you will be charged even if the price increases. However as the price then lowered, amazon will then honour the lower price even if it then rises again.

The price difference between the UK and US Amazon sites is ridiculous -- because you don't pay VAT outside the EU
its a great deal if you live in the States and the shipping is reasonable too. I've gotten some good deals on media
buying at the UK Store. Will buy again.  ;D

Um your joking right? CD's have no region coding like video discs.

I have a region-free DVD player so I can play DVDs from anyplace.
I bought the Brian Wilson Songwriter DVDs @ Amazon UK.

Aye, joking of course.  I have a small stack of Region 1 DVDs which I can't play as I can't find the right hack for my 5.1/HDCD/DVD player (which anyway isn't plugged in at the mo').  One day we'll be free of the curse of bootleg-encouraging Region Coding…

Yeah region coding is pretty dumb - especially when its easy to defeat. Mine is an old Lite-On brand unit known for its "secret menu" you dont need a firmware update, just punch in a code on the remote and its done. I like that old player so much I even had it refurbed with a newer and better drive it just keeps on going.

If you click the link  and look under product details, there's a part that you click on that says tell us about a lower price and you can include any link to any web site that has MIC at a lower price and eventually Amazon will lower their price based on this feedback.

ImportCDs set their price for the Harry box about $70 less than every other US store.  They therefore got pre-orders a plenty.  But they didn't get enough in and people who preordered are still waiting for their sets, which are on backorder, and the set came out 9 days ago.

Title: Re: MIC Price Discussion Thread.
Post by: anazgnos on August 09, 2013, 10:26:28 AM
Maybe somebody else can clarify, but the way I think importCDs works is sort of like a speculator - their apparent deep discounts on pre-order stuff like this is contingent on them getting a certain number of pre-orders, being able to negotiate a certain price with the distributor, or the expectation of wholesale prices being cut closer to to the sale date.  In other words there is no guarantee they will actually fulfill any orders and they aren't selling product that is actually in hand - they're trying to leverage advance sales into future wholesale orders, or something.  I don't know what the specific situation was with the Nilsson box set but I'm guessing they had a crazy price on it, and then nobody ended up getting anything from them.  They're using prices on things like this primarily to entice people into ordering other stuff that they do actually have.

I'd be really surprised if the Amazon price didn't come down.

It would discourage me from purchasing as much as I do.

Ah! The way you phrased it made me think you meant the no customs duty would discourage you, which of course made no sense to me.

Price alert - on deepdiscount.com, they are having a one day sale 15% off.  With the 15%, the price of the box is $110.49.  Free shipping.  Some may think it's still too expensive but I suspect this is the lowest the price will get pre-release - after release all bets are off.

Not exactly.

I've been keeping track of a bunch of prices on the the first page of the thread and there are three that are cheaper and have been for a while:
Sainsubry's has it for £63.99 ($99.01)
ImportCDs has it for $99.69
Amazon.de has it for EUR 79.99 ($106.47)

In the US it's the lowest next to import CDs.  Import cd's is not very reliable in shipping promptly and not infrequently never ship, saying they are out of stock.  Google import CDs reviews.  They apparently are reliable when you buy from them through amazon sellers, but they aren't selling presale through amazon - must be a deal not to undercut amazon's price.  Does import CDs price include free shipping?  I didn't want to take the risk of ordering from importcds.  The foreign sellers will all be more expensive than deep discount once you count in shipping to the US.

it sure kicks the snot out of the inflated Amazon US price!

Just a heads up for anyone who may be interested.  MIC on amazon.ca has just gone down over $20 and the preorder price is now $118.51.  I locked in the first day in went on preorder and have a guaranteed price of $110.84 (or less if it goes down again) but it was only that cheap for a few days.  Still beats Amazon.com at $139.88 anyway...
Not long now.  Can't wait to listen...

My fellow Australians - JB HiFi have finally listed MIC @ $160 ($147 US or 94 quid) with a release date of 30 August for those who don't want to go the Amazon route.

I'll be chatting with a few local (melbourne) indie stores - will post the goods accordingly.

Don't order from deepdiscount if there's a chance you will cancel your pre-order. There's a good chance they will charge you and ship it regardless. Furthermore deepdiscount has the worst customer service known to man. Funnily enough importCDs is excellent though, even though they have the same owners.

have not, but I don't think they're allowed to say they will ship before one day prior.

Their FAQ says, "We ship First Class to New England addresses so local orders often will arrive in a day or two. We ship via UPS Mail Innovations outside New England. They will deliver your order to your post office and the USPS will bring it to your house probably within 5-7 days."

Best idea is to wait around until you're fairly certain there aren't any left before you try to order it

I have an order in at Amazon UK for what was $86US, it's now $91US since our dollar keeps sinking in value.

I'd order from importcds.com in hopes of getting it earlier, but while they shipped out Nilsson boxes early,
they were then on backorder for a long time and those people had a long wait after the initial few got theirs
(in this case, about 83).

Things seem quite tight lipped when it comes to this set, but if best buy were offering an exclusive, it usually would be listed on their website by now, one week out from release date. For most of their exclusives, their website usually had listings for both the regular sku and the sku for their exclusive version. I only see one listing currently on their website, and it doesn't detail any exclusive aspect.

I decided I'm gonna kick it old school and walk into a Best Buy after work Tuesday and see what price they have it and IF they even have a copy. As Best Buy gets swallowed hole by online retailers I rarely find what I want and if I do it's rarely the price I want but since MiC has me as excited as a school kid I'll do what I did when I was a school kid and hope that I walk into Best Buy and get "the goods." I'm giving me a 25% chance of success/happiness here but I don't like to order box sets by mail (too much risk of damaged disks in shipment).

Afraid that if (and I suspect Bgas might be winding us up!) that happened I'd never buy Beach Boys product again. I've spent a lifetime tracking down the Beach Boys' work, buying every release and re-release and remix and remaster and, frankly, I can barely afford either the money or energy any more. Brian Wilson came tooooooo close to losing my support with all the exclusive Best Buy/Amazon/iTunes versions of his recent albums… this would one piss-take too far.

That said, I hope Bgas is taking the mickey and that the band will play right by their fans and enjoy my continued support.  :D

Dunno if anyone has mentioned this, but Amazon (USA at least)  has a credit card you can sign up for which gives you an instant $50 back...

Which would effectively lower the price of this set to $80 dollars...

If you don't already have an amazon credit card, that is... and don't mind having another credit card in your life... (which you technically never have to use again, I guess...)

What can I say...Kelly's got excellent taste when it comes to music purchases and gifts. And online stores with funny names!

(Though, as she pointed out, it should really be BlowItOuttaHere [two t's] for grammar's sake!)

Awesome guys. What's the delivery time for you?

Mine says it will be shipped Friday, which means I'll have it Saturday (if all goes well!)

Dutch retailer btw.

Ugh, I'm not too sure now. The website says 5-10 business days. I really hope my copy will ship in time. I didn't pre-order to receive it that much later >:(

What grammar rule is that? "out of" has only one "t" too. Me no native English speaker...

What grammar rule is that?

The Straight Outta Compton "grammar rule." Supersedes all other grammar rules.  :P

BTW, for anyone who's interested, and although it may not be the absolute lowest price out there, BlowItOutAHere has the box for $114.99 (US) + shipping. Last time I checked, they still ship from Kentucky (which is why I usually use them, due to my proximity). I've never had a problem with them.

NWA as the final arbiter on spelling and grammar! I LOVE it!   ;)

Seriously, I don't know of any grammar rule that requires it, I think it's just more of a spelling thing. To a native English speaker, if you put the word 'outa' in front of them divorced of any context that might allow you to guess how it was supposed to be pronounced, some people might think it was supposed to be spoken as 'ooota'. Almost like the French 'où est ta mère?' with the second and fourth words deleted, and the first and third glued together as one word.

But 'outta' - there's only one way that word could ever be pronounced in English. Like "outer" in outer space.

Klingt jedoch gut...

I think it's just luck of the draw sometimes. I've ordered many times from either BIOH, Deep Discount or Import CDs, and I think I've only had a cracked case from DD. Either that, or I'm just lucky that BIOH is one state away from me (vs. California for Imports)...lol :)

FWIW, I also ordered the Smile box from BIOH with no problems.

I called Best Buy, store manager said his store isn't even going to carry the box and if there was going to be an exclusive with Best Buy, he didn't see anything indicating it.  Normally there would be something about it online by now.

So I just ordered mine from importcds 103.49 + shipping and tax (I live in Illinois where we pay online tax) = 115.26.  Seems to be the best deal out there.

Best Buy is 136.99
Deep Discount is 124.99
BlowItOuttaHere is 114.99

Thanks to my girlfriend who bought it for me! :-D

I haven't actually gone through the steps of ordering, but in theory if you hold a Target Red card (debit or credit) you would save 5% off of the price and have free shipping. 5% off of the retail price (pre-tax) of $117.99 would make Target $112.09 + tax with free shipping. Worth a look:

My importcds.com package is on the move.. but it's coming from California to Michigan.
So anyone who ordered from importcds.com, the closer you are the California, the
sooner you'll get it.

I canceled my cheaper AmazonUK order and went with importcds.com a couple reasons.
1) Someone posted here that they claimed the box was 'in stock' and sure enough it was.
They sent out Nilsson boxes 6 days before release date and did so again here.
2) AmazonUK has a release date a week after the US and it took 9-10 days for them
to get me my Nilsson box.  So I figured I'd pay about $17 more to get it early next week
than wait until Sept 10-11.

I've not used them before, but I ordered from Bullmoose ... looks like a small indie chain.

$115 + free shipping, no tax + has a clear ship date (8/26) ... I think that's about as good as it's gonna get!

Thanks for mentioning this. I think i may give them a try, as opposed to ImportCDs, since i'm on the east coast.

Oh, jeez, that's just wrong. No — *shitty* and wrong. Another reason to hate on Amazon. Why can't they treat everybody the same?

I have just had an email that says my set has shipped to me from Amazon.de. But as I'm in the UK, it certainly won't get here overnight. And we have a public holiday with no postal deliveries on Monday, so unless it makes it here by Saturday morning (unlikely, from Germany), I'll get mine on Tuesday at the earliest.

If so, I'll still be no worse off than if I'd ordered from Universal's UK-based on-line store (which is still, as I explained above, the only UK retailer I can find anywhere that is officially releasing the set this week, as opposed to Monday September 2nd).

The Amazon Germany cost worked out at 84.48 Euros including shipping and all taxes in the end (£72.22 at today's rates, or about 110-111 US dollars). Somewhat madly, this is considerably cheaper than Universal UK's price of £79.99 plus shipping (which would apparently have added 2 quid for delivery in '3-5 working days', and a scandalous six quid for '48-hour delivery').

And of course, all of this is considerably cheaper than what most people in the States are paying for this box, which is crazy considering that's where the music comes from.

None of it makes any sense to me...

yeh I actually emailed the place, and they said (yesterday):

"We probably will receive them tomorrow or Friday and will ship this weekend or Monday. We might get yours out on Friday because you live in California. The record companies are pretty serious about not having people receive stuff before street date. You will get an email when our box is packaged."

Soooo ...

I caved and cancelled it, and ordered from Import CDs, since I'm in Calif. Price ends up about the same.

Hope you folks trying importcds have better luck than I'm having. Ordered the new Buffett cd, got confirmation over the weekend it had shipped. Still not here (next door, in Arizona) on Thursday. They warned shipping could be slow, depending on where one lives. I saw why when I got a second email... in my case, they shipped via DHL. Would have been quicker just to give the package to somebody hitchhiking out on I-10.

Yeah, I think I'll live if I have to wait a few extra days.  But in the past when I didn't want to wait, and found it locally, I'd just buy it and then return the one that came later in the mail to the local retailer!  Don't see myself doing that now, I can definitely wait.

Gotta hope then that all the people ordering fom Importcds get their box in a timely manner. Cuz odds are, using DHL, it will be delayed much later than it would have been buyiing it from amazon. Me, I'm happy with the price, so delivery time isn't that important. Heck, I haven't put my Smile box on yet....

I selected the "found it cheaper elsewhere" option. They won't know that elsewhere was Amazon.uk. Thought the savings makes up for a delay of a couple of weeks... as long as it arrives in good shape.

I broke down and pre-ordered from amazon.com. Yes, dot-com, mainly because 1) I want to make sure I get it as soon as humanly possible, and 2) I have the Amazon credit card, so I get triple-points on it for Amazon orders.

What's weird, though, is that the price of it in my cart is suddenly $10 LESS than the price it's actually listed at. I don't have any Amazon rewards points to apply, so it's not that....

Mine shipped today from Amazon and will be delivered tomorrow. I guess $20 off list isn't terrible, but I did expect it to drop lower than it did. Hard to believe this box lists for $149.99. That is some major bucks to buy full price.

I bought it from Amazon as well and signed up for Prime so that it would be delivered on release date.  I am surprised that the price didn't drop more as well.  These days $22/CD is very steep, even with nice packaging.  I just bought the Nilsson box at under $6/disc.

Interesting, that; as I posted in the other thread, my tracking was updated today at 11:43 to show it was "in town" but still wouldn't be delivered until the 30th. Thinking now I should invite my postal carrier over for some beers so I can see my copy!

A courier has just turned up with my box at my house in East Anglia, in the UK. I bought from Amazon Germany, and had it sent with Standard Shipping. Everything was well packed and is undamaged. Final price paid was 84.48 Euros — just over 113 US dollars, and equal to £74.20 on my bank statement.

So, not the cheapest, but at least it's here! And by the sound of it, none of the Amazon UK orders have shipped yet... nor even some of the Amazon US ones!

It looks great! Thanks to a busy day at work and the fact that I've already heard most of it thanks to what I shall refer to as 'the Finnish proxy leak', I won't be leaping on it to devour its contents immediately.

Tonight, however... a pair of headphones and a glass of something or another await...!

Incidentally, I kept my original Amazon UK order on in case there was a foul-up with my subsequent order from Amazon Germany. Now my box is here from Amazon.de, I could cancel my UK order. However, if anyone reading this would like me to redirect my Amazon UK order to their address, I will gladly do so if you'll refund me the Amazon price I paid. I got a reasonably good early lock-in deal price (£66.11 including shipping), although it's not as good as the Sainsbury's on-line price given above (£63.99 — not sure if that includes shipping or not).

The other disadvantage is that I have no idea when that UK set will ship. It's not on priority shipping and my original delivery estimate was September 5th, so if you can't wait that long, I'd advise you look elsewhere. However, if you can find an on-line leak to tide you over until then and would be happy to pay a few quid less than the current Amazon price, or any of the UK bricks-and-mortar retailers' prices, drop me a PM. First come, first served, and if there's no interest by tomorrow in the UK, I'll cancel the order. Otherwise, I may end up with *two* Beach Boys career-spanning box sets, and while one may be regarded as a misfortune, two starts to look like carelessness...!

Also, i called a Newbury Comics in town just out of curiosity and they said they had one copy in but already sold it. As a comparison, they had about 4 or 5 copies of TSS on release day.

Help!

Don't really know where to post this, so this will have to do.

I am not a completist, or a collector. I just want the music I don't have. So I was going to cherry pick off of iTunes, but many of the alternate/a capella tracks I so desperately want are listed as "Purchased" in the iTunes store, despite the tags like "alternate version" or "stereo" after the song titles. The biggest problem being the stereo "Country Air," which I am unable to purchase a la carte (or at all, perhaps).

Somebody brought this up in another thread before the release date, but I haven't read anything else since (that discussion came to an end when Disney Boy decided that only people who buy physical CD product are allowed to be real fans).

Any suggestions? I wish I had just bought the mp3 version from Amazon, but I've already purchased all the tracks I could get off of iTunes and don't want to buy them twice. Although now I might have to...

Buy the tracks you can't get on iTunes off Amazon. You can cherry pick there without having to buy the entire thing.

Just buy the singular tracks (each for $1.29.)

I hear ya. I was lucky in that I found an FYE about an hour away from me that carried it (they had one copy). When I went to my local FYE they told me they wouldn't be carrying it at all (same for Barnes & Noble and Best Buy, Target, etc.) They called another store for me who said they had it but couldn't find it. After some chatting over the phone, the clerk did manage to locate it. Because the box is vinyl size they stuck it in with the vinyl (Doh!). I wonder if anyone else had this problem?

I'm shocked about the Indie stores in my area. When I called I was told "We can special order it but it'll take a few weeks". When I expressed surprise that tracking down the box set in stores was so difficult the owner told me "The Beach Boys don't sell here" which I guess is true but....aren't the hipsters supposed to be into the Beach Boys?

Not a box set like this. MiC is the epitome of square and geeky (and not in the ironic and cool way) -- i mean, look at the thing, it comes packaged as a yearbook and it covers their entire career. And for those who don't know any better, it's kind of being promoted with the likes of Goin' to the Beach.

I ordered mine from importcds last Thursday at noon.  Got an email an hour ago saying it was in Forest Park, IL (about 40 minutes from me).  Getting closer!

I'm fine waiting because another package I ordered DID come today.  I got the Beach Boys In Concert book and it looks great.  That plus I finally ordered some of the 2012 remasters, so technically I do have some new mixes to listen to until MIC comes.

Okay, so after I cancelled my order, I went to Collectors Choice Music and added MIC to my cart, then created an account.

While I was doing that, the Mrs. told me to hold off because she was trying something to guarantee we'd get it by today. (We did; she just texted me to confirm she got it at her workplace.) So i closed out the browser.

Then i got an e-mail from Collectors Choice Music saying something like "We noticed you abandoned our site without finishing your order. We hope we didn't upset you. So here's a coupon code for $5 off a purchase of $25 or more." Which means I could have gotten it for $5 LESS than their already-lower-than-a-lot-of-dealers' prices.

Hipsters are into Pet Sounds.

Hate to say it, but I'm not shocked at all. These guys have just been misrepresented and under-promoted to the extent that I'm worried as to how well something like this will sell, especially for such a steep price. I hope it does well, but yeah. :(

Out of curiousity, I looked and it's not even on the s00per fancy invite-only torrenting site I use, which usually has stuff up in lossless at least a few days prior to release, if not a week or two. The same was true of the Smile box (which had much more public interest) and the mono/stereo remasters last year - they didn't appear until weeks or even months after the fact.

Hate to say it, but the people really interested in recordings like "My Love Lives On" or "Where Is She?" or whatever might only number in the thousands. :(

The comments above, really show how the marketing of this box (and frankly, the band) is just plain awful.  It's really starting to piss me off.  Piss me right off!!

The look of the box -- the orange -- makes it LOOK like it's another retread of Sounds Of Summer.  Like a deluxe, over-priced version of that set.  Which, it kind of is... but with a lot of cool bonus stuff.  Stuff that a Sounds Of Summer buyer -- DOESN'T WANT.

This box wasn't for the casual fcking fan!!  It was for us.  We're the target.. the hardcore.  The hipsters, if you will.  It should have had something a little more artsy on the cover -- I don't know.  Maybe some original artwork?  Similar to Smiley Smile or something?

I've never really minded -- even defended -- them relying on their "surf" image.  But it's kind of wearing thin on me.  Pet Sounds is cool.  SMiLE is cool.  This SH-T IS COOL NOW!!!!!!!!!

For crying out loud!!  I think the people are ready to see the Beach Boys in a different light, I think they can handle it.  My God, they crave it!!!  They want to see something different!!!  Lord almighty, can I get a witness?!!

Think about it, if it was for us, there is no way that they would put an embossed wave on the box. Mowing the lawn and washing the car is what we want. Oh, wait... that was on Hawthorne,CA. ;) Actually, I would have loved an embossed Appeal To The Great Spirit. :)

Ah, but hang on Mr Bag.

I hate the cheesy surf image as well, and think it, along with that furshenliggen mid-70s 'wave' logo for the band that we're now stuck with on MiC as well, does the band something of a disservice... but apart from that, I think the wave cover and the orange colour for MiC is really cool. When you hold the real thing in your hand, it looks great. The faux-leather and the orange colour suggest... well, a REAL orange, the fruit, which has strong historical links to California, and the typography and design inside (may the Almighty Flying Spaghetti Monster himself bless Mark London) is terrific. It's a seriously cool package.

There's also the small but significant fact that MiC is a large hardbacked-book-sized thing, and Sounds Of Summer is a small CD-case-sized thing. There's no way the two can get confused. That's not clear from comparing two JPEGs, as you did here. I guess if you buy it as a download, that could happen, as JPEGs might be all you get to go on... but not when you shell for the real deal.

Oh, and one more thing — whatever you think of the design for MiC, consider how much worse we had it with the GV box. Those furshenliggen CD booklet graphics were so bad I had to turn them around, so mine have images of the Boys from the four different eras on the front. I mean... my eyyyyeeezzzzzz!!!! A condensation-covered orange inexplicably flying in space with the sea inside it!!!! A blonde surfer girl surrounded by blue sperm!!! A winged motorcycle headlight in the shape of a heart (what WERE they thinking here?) with flames behind it! And all done in that friggin' awful airbrushed mid-70s prog rock cartoon style! WHHHHHHHHHYYYY...?????

Title: Re: MIC Price Discussion Thread.
Post by: Bean Bag on August 29, 2013, 09:30:53 AM
:lol  Yeah, those CD inserts for the GV box were questionable!

I hear you about the quality of the physical product, once in your hands, being much nicer -- and not confuse-able with the Sounds of Summer CD.  But, I think MiC is clearly "on brand" (a little marketing lingo) with the SoS release.  Orange.  Simple.  Beachy.  It wasn't an accident, or artistic choice.  It's marketing, branding 101.  And since this set isn't really being sold in stores (?!?!?!) and almost exclusively online, the distinction between the two, isn't really all that distinct.

By the way... not being in stores, like Best Buy... is very strange.  I'm shocked.  Shocked!  Especially after being lectured by many that this set is not just for us... but rather, John Q. Pubic.

I mean Public.

I got my SMiLE Sessions box at Best Buy.  Strange, huh?  I don't know what to think.  Was this grossly over-priced and largely redundant box for the fleecing of the hardcore fans?  Well, yes... but why the camouflage of a greatest hits "career retrospective?"  Why not capitol-ize on the success and interest of the SMiLE box, and go artsy-fartsy?  Resurrect the Beach Boys as the overlooked artistic institution that they are.  Que es un dealios? (what is the deal?)

In the end, who cares.  I just find the whole thing a strange, wasted opportunity.  More the byproduct of a mechanical marketing team running on auto-pilot, rather than a brilliant, dedicated public relations and image revival effort.

It's a microcosm of the new economic reality. Most CDs/Books I want to purchase these days aren't carried by Best Buy/B& N/Target, I have to order the item online. Stores like Best Buy & Barnes and Noble exist only to have us "kick the tires" on some products (especially major purchases like appliances) and maybe get an idea of something we wanted that we didn't know we wanted....then when we find it we order the item for a much cheaper price online and wait for it to arrive from our favorite online retailer who doesn't have to worry about overhead costs like retail space rental, customer service employees, etc.

Interesting points, Mr Bag. I initially thought I too might be cheesed off at having to wade through all the tracks I know to get to the unreleased stuff. This was never going to annoy me to the point where I didn't shell for the set, mind, but it was something I thought might bother me.

However, playing the whole shebang through earlier (as I did today) was a really involving and joyous musical experience, and I think that must have been at least in part one of the aims of the compilation process. Sure, there must have been some marketing wazz in all this (what new record release *doesn't* have that these days?), but it didn't annoy me.

I know there are already complaints about the track selection, mixes, and mastering — but speaking personally, none of that bothered me as I waded through the six discs. I thought it sounded terrific. I listened, I was impressed at the vast body of excellent music the Boys have created over the last 50 years, and I even found myself thrilled anew at hearing some of these (in some cases, all-TOO-familiar) tracks. For someone who has heard this stuff as much as I have over the last 18 years, that's an achievement on the part of this set.

I am, in short, a satisfied customer. And I've decided the whole thing is going on my iPod, whereas at first I was just going to cherry-pick the new tracks and remixes I don't already have. But now, I think MiC is a good enough listen through as a whole to justify being ripped in its entirety. Again, points to the set's compilers in that respect. To return to topic, the price I paid wasn't excessive in the end, IMHO, for a great set of music like this. I paid £74.40 (84.48 Euros and just over US$113) for six CDs of great-sounding stuff in a terrific-looking, nicely designed package. For all the griping and moaning that there was about the price of MiC when it was first announced, I can absolutely live with that.

I still hate Barbara furshenliggen Ann though. That track is getting replaced with the Live in London version with the horns, godammit.

I still hate Barbara furshenliggen Ann though. That track is getting replaced with the Live in London version with the horns, godammit.

 :lol

It does look like they made an effort to keep the redundant stuff, fresh.  So I can understand it being a nice listening experience.  I'm stuck having to wait for a more earthly price, which may never come.   :'(

Not trying to be flip Bean but the economic landscape HAS changed that much since November 2011 IMHO.

I give Best Buy only a few more years and it'll be gone. Barnes & Noble survives thanks to The Nook but for how long? It is a depressing reality. I may have been able to special order MiC from my favorite local used record/cd store but it would have been $150, no doubt. As it stands I spent $108 tax included but am stuck waiting for a package that has been sitting in a box 3,000 miles away from me for 7 days. I hate what has happened to this economy and I wonder if people outside America have this same issue. It sounds like most of the UK posters do have the same issues we have with finding MiC in stores so I suppose so.

Good point.  You could be right about the peril that awaits our brick n' retailers retailers... things may have gotten worse since 2011.  We did, after all, chose to stay the course of economic cancer in 2012.  Despite what we're told... there is no economic recovery.  It's just the opposite.

I haven't seen this set in ANY STORE. ANYWHERE. And its not because it's a stong seller. They aren't stocking it.

These are horrible times we live in.

I remember when there was a long line to wait for one of 6-8 Best Buy lanes ready to take your cash. Now its in-and-out and they have 1 or 2 people ready to take your cash. The newer Best Buys only have 2 or 3 registers now, the older ones had numbered registers that went up to 10 and are largely sitting unused collecting dust. I used to love a trip to Best Buy where I would invariably buy something I didn't know I *needed*. Now I go there seeking something I desperately want and leave disappointed. Brick-and-mortars can't compete with their finite resources (manpower, space) against the amazon's of the world. Sad but true.

This board's old friend Phil A. Cohen enlightened me: Amazon is now concentrating their efforts on having warehouses close to every major metropolitan area with the goal of having next day shipping standard and same day delivery an upgrade. In exchange for this effort and great expense to build these warehouses they are no longer concerned with being the lowest price on items they sell. It's a good strategy, I never thought to look around for cheaper prices online because for years amazon.com WAS the cheaper price. The MiC buying experience, together with Phil (yes Phil) have opened my eyes and I will look around next time I buy something online.

All that said I love buying stuff used off of Amazon marketplace--great deals can be had there on everything except shipping costs, but they have mortgages to pay too I suppose.

I think Phil is mistaken. There is a giant Amazon warehouse about 15 miles from us. The orders we get come from other States sometimes 1000's of miles away. This leads me to believe that every distribution warehouse carries only particular goods. I havent spoken with anyone who is employeed there though so I could be wrong but if the local bldg has the whole product line why do our goods come from elsewhere?

By the way... not being in stores, like Best Buy... is very strange.  I'm shocked.  Shocked!  Especially after being lectured by many that this set is not just for us... but rather, John Q. Pubic.

I would agree, in general.  Different market, different times.  But the SMiLE box was in Best Buys.  That was a 5 CD, two lp, 130 dollar multi-deluxe set spanning just ONE unreleased album (albeit the most famous reindeer of all).

But MiC screams greatest hits... yet its MORE expensive than the SMiLE box and NOT in stores.

 ???

That's the thing - Smile has/had a huge reputation built up over the years. It finally being released was somewhat of a big deal.

MIC, on the other hand, is probably kind of seen as just another hits package to the casual fan. I don't think many people want to drop 130 bucks for a sort of "best of" over the cheap ten/fifteen dollar version when their interest in the band is limited.

With all that in mind, Made In California is much more for the hardcore fan than The Smile Sessions was. I know many hardcore fans will say they already have maybe 75% of this stuff and this is why I'm kind of worried as to how well this will end up selling. Hopefully when and if this sees a drastic price drop, sales will go up.

I can’t disagree w/ anything that Bean Bag said.  But I wish the BB’s would start up a legacy series similar to what Dylan’s people do with his Bootleg Series: focus on certain periods in the BB’s history and release theme based legacy sets: Live ’71, etc.  Lotsa stuff there to appeal to casual fan and maniac alike.

I might have bought the box sooner if I hadn't been able to listen to WIBNTLA on the net at about the same time the box set was released.  Being able to listen to a few select cuts on the net made it so I didn't feel like I had to rush out and buy it, but the cuts I heard made me want to buy the box even more.  So thanks Amazon for the price cut.

I agree.  This is their best way out.  They have the fixed disc ready to ship, no reason to open up stock to change a disc, and $80 is about what we were all hoping the "fair" price would be.  Don't regret paying what I did though - you get so many new mixes, new tracks, ect., can't wait to get more details from the experts.  Any up-dates on that?  Last I heard was "by Christmas."  Some bitchin' from others, but I am happy with everything.  I do not collect too many boots, many of the tracks I'm hearing for the first time.  So don't have anything much to compare them to.  Every Beach Boys fan should get this.  Mark and Alan, and all involved did such a great, great job.  Their work with fine tuning these tracks, (and fixing stuff on last year's mono/stereo discs) and for what's to come...Well, they just deserve a BIG THANKS from us.  I still want more...my wallet's ready for Adult/Child, Wild Honey (I want all the tracks on one disc - even if it's a mixture of mono/stereo), and Friends and CATP-ST, (I got, and was pleased with what they did with SU and Sunflower last year), and and...
Bonus tracks all around!  Hope the problems don't put them, or the suits, off from giving us more.  Soon.  I'm just getting older.

For anyone who doesn't already have a copy of MiC (or anyone that wants an extra copy, I suppose), Amazon will be featuring it as part of their Lightning Deals today at 4:00 pm est. The sale price hasn't been announced yet, but I would assume it will be heavily discounted. A rough guess would be 20 to 40 percent off. These deals tend to end pretty quickly, so if you're interested I would try to be there at or near the start. Here's the link:

UPDATE: Sale price is $80.49.

I've had the box (yearbook) for one day and it's awesome.  I wonder why some of these songs were not released years earlier, but better later than never.

A must have at any price.  I don't regret buying it at initial release price.
