Title: Uncharacteristic Songs
Post by: GuyOnTheBeach on December 26, 2012, 05:23:47 PM
By this I mean songs by an artist that don't really fit into their typical style or genre.
I thought I'd start this thread with the Art Garfunkel song "Take Me Away" (Linked at the bottom)

I always thought that this song wouldn't sound out of place on "Pacific Ocean Blue" especially the backing track which has melodic guitars and booming synthesizers and multiple sections, in my opinion it is the best song that Garfunkel done in his solo career.

"What Do You Know" by Left Banke. This is band with baroque, upper class, intelligent, mainly mid-tempo songs with intricate key changes. Then bam! - simple country-tinged tune sung in such way as if they'd been singing songs like it since beginning.

A while back I broke out Tom Petty's Echo after listening to Nirvana. Man, I was getting some serious Nirvana vibes from "I Don't Wanna Fight". It still sounds more like Petty than Nirvana, but I thought it worth mentioning.

Paul doesn't sing it, he plays bass but the fact he even submitted bass to Rhianna's song isn't characteristic. Speaking of Paul's songs, to the topic - "Temporary Secretary", the appalling 5th wheel in his career.

Brian's collab with Hollens is bizarre; it's useless idea.
Equally bizarre but better song is Sebu track "Runaway Dancer".
Ditto guesting at Janelle Monelle's.
Just imagine what would be like if Frank Ocean did sing with Brian. It would be akin to 180-degree shift. Epic fail. Thank lucky stars he didn't.

Gene Pitney "Skyline Pigeon" - good singer but some songs don't fit his unique singing style: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mGsRPOl8jtw

To reference: Elton John's harpsichord original (Elton plays it, charming subdued arrangement): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=cVd5RAVHSD8

Yes indeed--unique voices like his do have that handicap.

Going off-topic, my favourite Gene Pitney song, for musical and extra-musical reasons, is "Mecca" (1963). It didn't mean a light in the UK but I loved it--half of it, actually, as that was all you got to hear on Radio Luxembourg in those days. It took me half a century to hear the rest (they used to fade it out during the guitar solo):

Does "Honey Pie" by The Beatles count? To me it has an old vaudeville or swing sound. But then again, The Beatles were doing songs that were "unconventional" throughout their entire career( "Tomorrow Never Knows", "I Am The Walrus", etc).
