Title: Rank the tracks #5: Shut Down Volume 2
Post by: Letsgoawayforawhile on November 25, 2012, 08:02:33 PM
I really love this album. Definitely has it's low points, but the high points on it, are really high.

12. Denny's Drums - I love Dennis, but this is all over the place. Maybe that's the point?
11. Shut Down, Part 2 - Great playing, but it's the same ol' stuff.
10. Louie, Louie - Blah.
9. Why Do Fools Fall in Love - Blah volume 2.
8. Cassius" Love vs. "Sonny" Wilson - I think this is just hilarious.
7. Pom Pom Play Girl - Carl's first lead. Just to think how many perfect songs he'd sing lead on in the coming years.
6. This Car of Mine - Dennis singing about that car. Awesome.
5. In the Parkin' Lot
4. Keep an Eye on Summer - Beautiful.
3. Don't Worry Baby - Gah, I'm crazy about this.
2. Fun, Fun, Fun - This will stand the test of time forever. Such a "fun" song. See what I did there?
1. The Warmth of the Sun - Good Lord, does it get any better than this? So much sweet, and sad, fitting perfectly together.

1.Don’t Worry Baby - Perfection.
2.Keep An Eye On Summer - Very 'high school' track. Twist on the doo-wop formula.
3.The Warmth Of The Sun - Haven't connected with it in the same way as DWB, but I think I will one day, andI do love it. Beautiful.
4.Pom Pom Play Girl - Love the funky chord changes and short length. Precursor to This Whole World?

5.Fun, Fun, Fun - Works wonderfully in a live setting.
6.In The Parkin’ Lot - Killer harmonies at the beginning!
7.This Car of Mine - Dennis doing his Dion swagger.

8.Cassius Love vs. Sonny Liston - Easily the best of the 'filler talk' tracks. If it weren't for it's wonky placement on the album, I'd like it a lot more.
9.Why Do Fools Fall In Love - Nice arrangement but not a huge fan of the song by any artist.

10.Shut Down II
11.Louie Louie
12.Denny’s Drums

As much as I love David, harmonically and production wise this was a whole new level for the group. In my top ten easily despite the filler.

1 Fun, Fun Fun
2. In The Parkin' Lot
3. Who Do Fools
4 Warmth Of The Sun
5 Don't Worry Baby
6. Pom Pom
7. Cassius Love vs. Sonny Wilson
8. Shut Down 2
9  Keep An Eye On Summer
10 This Car Of Mine
11 Louie, Louie
12 Denny's Drums.

1. Don't Worry Baby
2. The Warmth of the Sun
3. Keep An Eye on Summer
4. In the Parkin' Lot
5. Fun, Fun, Fun
6. This Car of Mine
7. Why Do Fools Fall in Love
8. Shut Down, Part II

9. Pom Pom Play Girl
10. Louie Louie
11. "Cassius" Love vs. "Sonny" Wilson
12. Denny's Drums

Big divide between the best and worst tracks this time around, but the best tracks are that good.  Don't Worry Baby is the perfect early Beach Boys song.  If only it weren't for the blatant filler tracks, it would be hard to resist this album.  If for instance the best new songs from Little Deuce Coupe could have just stuck around here it'd a strong one for sure.

1. Don’t Worry Baby - My second favorite Beach Boys' song, just behind "Wouldn't It Be Nice"
2. Fun, Fun, Fun - The absolute epitome of the band's early stuff and with nary a mention of surf or sea.
3. The Warmth Of The Sun - Another fantastic cut
4. Why Do Fools Fall In Love - Great cover!  Stays true to the original but with some phenomenal vocal work, especially from Brian.
5. This Car of Mine - I always like this but hated the fact that it just ended "out of nowhere".  I've since remedied that by creating an extended version.
6. Pom Pom Play Girl - Much weaker than the above but the early Carl vocal gives it a sentimental edge.
7. Keep An Eye On Summer - Decent enough but WAY too cliche for my tastes.
8. Denny’s Drums - Both weak and very simplistic but understandable, given Dennis's fan base, and kinda charming
9. Shut Down II - Weak but not awful
10. In The Parkin’ Lot - Another cliche
11. Louie Louie - Ouch!
12. Cassius Love vs. Sonny Liston - For ANYONE who wonders why the Boys don't get the same respect as the Beatles, I present to you the last two tracks on my list.  Just TRY to imagine the Fabs releasing ANYTHING like those, even on Beatles For Sale!  ???

1= Warmth Of The Sun - one of my very favourites
1= In The Parkin' Lot - heavenly tag, rocking song, fit together perfectly, no unnecessary padding, just two minutes of pop perfection.
1= Don't Worry Baby - Couldn't bear to put this absolute classic in third place so...
4. Fun, Fun Fun
5  Keep An Eye On Summer - a great, underrated song
6. Shut Down part 2 -love the sax
7. This Car Of Mine- great tune, great vocal
8. Louie, Louie- not the greatset version, but not bad at all
9. Why Do Fools Fall In Love- don't like this much for some reason, prefer the original. Admittedly it sounded great at Wembley.

10. Pom Pom Playgirl - A Brian Wilson technical tour-de force that doesn't quite work for me.
11. Cassius Love vs. Sonny Wilson - I'm glad this exists. I wonder why they didn't play it on this year's tour.
12 Denny's Drums.

No rank making for me, but when I see these tracks listed I can almost imagine why the Beach Boys became 'uncool' in america as opposed to for example Britain. Cassius vs Sonny is a prime example of what British audiences never knew about since they 'discovered' the Beach Boys as late as 1966. Hence no one ever knew about the utterly uncoolness of a track like that. I mean, it has charm for sure, and as a devoted fan it's a pleasure hearing it. most other ppl would be 'wtf is dis?'

This is a little better than Deuce Coupe, but still not one of my favorite albums.

1. The Warmth of the Sun (The only song I really love on this album)

2. Pom Pom Play Girl
3. Fun, Fun, Fun
4. Don't Worry Baby
5. Why Do Fools Fall In Love (These four are nice songs, but not great)

6. Keep An Eye On Summer (Could be a great song, but I don't care for the mix)

7.  Shut Down Part 2
8. Denny's Drums  (A couple of nice instrumentals)

9. In the Parkin Lot
10. This Car of Mine
11. Louie Louie
12. Cassius Love vs Sonny Wilson (I don't care for the last 3 songs. The last track I listed can be fun to listen to....once.)

This album could be so much better. Oh well. I still love it for those few fantastic tracks.

1. Don't Worry Baby - Just great. Especially Mike's low part during the chorus.
2. Warmth of the Sun
3. Fun Fun Fun - Such a relief. Finally, a fast-paced instrumental track that fits the quality of the song itself. So many early fast songs are great, but up til now they've all had these really weak backing tracks (with the exception of "Surfin USA" and a couple others maybe). I'm looking at you, "Don't Worry Baby."
4. In The Parking Lot - Fun melody, and one of their most successful songs as far as making me feel like a teen in the early '60s. "Grass is all covered in dew," so fucking good!
5. Pom Pom Playgirl - Another fun schooltime melody. The fade is dope.
6. This Car of Mine - Love the "Diddly-oh" part -- enough to place this before "Keep An Eye..."
7. Keep An Eye On Summer - Nice chord changes. Doesn't thrill me as much as it used to, though.
8. Why Do Fools... - Here's where the album starts to lose me. A fine performance, but I just don't care why fools fall in love.
9. Shut Down Pt 2 - It's an OK instrumental. Still -- SKIP!
10. Cassius Love vs. Sonny Wilson - Can't believe I dislike the next 2 tracks so much that I'm placing a skit before them. It really is an amusing skit though!
11. Denny's Drums
12. Louie Louie - NOOOOOO!

1. The Warmth of the Sun
2. Don't Worry Baby
3. Fun Fun Fun

Any album with Denny's Drums and Sonny vs Cassius is cruisin' for a bruisin', but the top tier is the equal of any other BB album's.

4. In The Parkin' Lot
5. Why Do Fools Fall in Love
6. Keep an Eye on Summer
7. Shut Down Part 2
8. Pom Pom Playgirl
9. This Car of Mine

I have a sneaking regard for Shut Down Part 2, and think they would have done better to have padded out their early albums by setting Carl to work on instrumentals more often. Pom Pom Playgirl is a recently acquired taste.

10. Louie Louie
11/12. Denny's Drums/Sonny vs Cassius

Thud. Fancy putting Louie Louie on Best of the Beach Boys (the one that squeezed Pet Sounds out of the marketplace).

Half of a great album. The top 6 tracks on my ranking are just wonderful:

1. The Warmth of the Sun - Astonishing. My #4 favorite Beach Boys song, simply a stunner, brilliant, perfect and beautiful.
2. Fun, Fun, Fun - A true classic. Adore it.
3. Don't Worry Baby - Spectacular. Just incredible. Pretty as a girl on a spring day.
4. Why Do Fools Fall In Love - One of my very favorite covers the band ever did. Exquisite.
5. Keep An Eye On Summer - Underrated and really lovely. Stunning Brian vocal.
6. In The Parkin' Lot - REALLY underrated, I just love this song. The intro/outro bits are great.

7. 'Cassius' Love vs. 'Sonny' Wilson - Doesn't stand up to a lot of listens and it is filler, but I still listen to it every now and then and laugh.
8. Pom Pom Playgirl - Meh.
9. This Car of Mine - Would've been a nicer fit on Little Deuce Coupe, thematically, than the album version of BTTYS. Not terrible.
10. Louie Louie - Eh, no. Total filler.
11. Shut Down Part II - Useless.
12. Denny's Drums - Sorry Denny, but no.

Too much filler!

12. "Cassius" Love vs "Sonny" Wilson. Unnecessary, pathetic, doesn't deserve to exist.
11. Denny's Drums. Dennis, while eventually becoming the second-best songwriter of the Beach Boys, never was a great drummer. Just a Filler.
10. Louie, Louie. One of the worst covers the Beach Boys ever did.
9. Pom, Pom Play Girl. Sugary Crap.
8. Fun, Fun, Fun. Out of all the Beach Boy's popular hits, this is the most overrated. Hated this song since I first heard it. Highly unbearable.
7. This Car Of Mine. One of Dennis's weakest songs that he sang in.
6. Shut Down, Part II. Not a big fan of early Beach Boys Instrumentals, but this is all right.
5. Why Do Fools Fall In Love. Not half as good as the original, but the intro is one of the best I've ever heard. Not available on some versions.
4. In The Parkin' Lot. Forgot by most, but highly underrated.
3. Keep An Eye On Summer. Not as strong as no.2 and no.1, but still unforgettable.
2. Don't Worry Baby. Love this, but in my opinion not as good as no.1
1. The Warmth Of The Sun. No Contest, this is one of my all-time favourites.

1. The Warmth of the Sun - 295 (10)
2. Don't Worry Baby - 294 (12)
3. Fun, Fun, Fun - 267 (4)
4. In the Parkin' Lot - 215 (1)
5. Keep An Eye on Summer - 200
6. Why Do Fools Fall in Love - 194
7. Pom Pom Play Girl - 163
8. This Car of Mine - 151
9. Shut Down, Part II - 122
10. Louie, Louie - 82
11. "Cassius" Love vs. "Sonny" Wilson - 73
12. Denny's Drums - 51

My thoughts? The battle for first between The Warmth of the Sun and Don't Worry Baby is tantalizingly close, one that would likely continue to go back and forth with further responses.  No gigantic surprises beyond that, as this is a very top-heavy album.

Very spotty album; a few all-time classics & a few all-time throwaways.

Don't Worry Baby - classic.
The Warmth of The Sun -another classic.
Why Do Fools Fall in Love -man, Brian did SPECTOR better than Spector himself.
Fun, Fun, Fun - this is also classic & fun.

In the Parkin' Lot - intrigued by the title somehow, overwhelmed by the thick chorus. Kinda reminds me of "Knowing When To Leave" by Burt Bacharach
Keep an Eye On Summer
This Car of Mine - Throwaway, but I like it better than I give a credit to.
Pom Pom Play Girl

Shut Down, Part II - The riff being borrowed by Dylan surprised me, because I almost forgot how the song sounded.
Cassius vs. Sonny
Louie, Louie - boring.
Denny's Drums

Louie, Louie - boring.
Spector's Wall is very samey. Brian beat him by leaps & bounds. He created diverse interesting arrangements that differ song to song.
Agree! Cool minds think alike. :3d Check instead Richard Berry. :3d
Yeah. I personally like Spector stuff as much as BB stuff, but in terms of production BB is always better.

Other examples where BB did Spector very well: "Be True To Your School", "Do You Wanna Dance", "In The Back of My Mind", "Let Him Run Wild", "Cabin Essence", "I Can Hear Music", "San Miguel", "Celebrate the News", "Just Once In My Life", "Sherry She Needs Me", to name a few.

I didn't know about Richard Berry. Is he the same person as the one involved in "Louie Louie"? What are his major production/recordings? I'm curious because I'm always intrigued by good production :)

He with the Pharaohs sang the original. It's the major hit but check "Somewhere There's A Rainbow", "Sweet Sugar You", "Have Love Will Travel", "You're The Girl". Maybe you'll like these.
Okay, I'll check 'em out. Thanks a lot for recommendation.
