A nice stepup from the first album, especially on a few key tracks.  The harmonies are notably fuller.  The amount of instrumentals does make it feel like a legitimate surf rock album, although Stoked is the only one that I find to be particularly gripping.  There are plenty of Beach Boys album I'd take above it, but it's a respectable crop and holds up to where their contemporaries were at the time.  Once again I bolded the ones I particularly enjoy.

Hard to rank the following 9 tracks, only a few whiskers twixt placings;

1. Surfin USA
2. Noble Surfer
3. Misirlou
4. Farmer's Daughter
5. Lonely Sea
6. Shut Down
7. Honky Tonk
8. Let's Go Trippin'
9. Stoked

The next 2 are Ok, but not as bitchin' as the above:

10. Surf Jam
11. Finders Keepers

And finally:
12. Lana - dud city, sounds like they couldn't wait to get the hell out of there.

That said, what a Fcukin' great album, in my top 5.

This is the album that began my life-long Beach Boys obsession, my sister bought this LP and the Freewheelin Bob Dylan LP on the same day in 1963. The sound of the guitars on the SUSA LP made me want to learn how to play and from this point (I was 5 yrs old) I bugged my parents incessantly until they finally bought me an electric guitar. Like millions of other kids I had no idea who Dick Dale was, but I really dug the Beach Boys surf instrumentals and the tough, raw sound, not to mention their image on the back cover which seemed so cool and unusual for 1963. The vocals, especially on the title track, took it all to a new place that no other band could match. To me this LP is a complete statement and in retrospect is one of the most perfect garage-band moments in rock history.

Surfin USA - An anthem, harmony meets surf/punk Chuck Berry.
Shut Down - You can smell the burning rubber
Miserlou - This one completely blew my five year old mind
Stoked - Quick mom and dad, get me a guitar before I freak out!
Let's Go Trippin - Carl and Dave sound like a 20 finger, 12 string teen-beast
Farmer's Daughter - Gorgeous melody over surf guitar riffs, the Beach Boys owned this territory
Lonely Sea - Deep and soul baring
Lana - modestly cool
Surf Jam - loose as a goose
Noble Surfer - the keyboard/celeste solo is wacky
Honky Tonk - its there
Finders Keepers - this one always felt out of place to me

I love this LP, don't ever tell me its filler, or not important. For its time it was revolutionary.

It'd be awesome if people started maybe saying what they like about tracks that warrants their placement on the list or something. A whole lot of threads full of ordered lists isn't very interesting or provoking for discussions...

Another great garage rock album. It is a bit more diverse than Surfin Safari. Though, I don't care for the ones at the bottom of the list as much. I don't think as highly about Surfin USA (the song) as most people. I am a big fan of the surf instrumentals sprinkled in though.

1. Shut Down
2. Stoked
3. Lonely Sea
4. Misirlou
5. Noble Surfer
6. Surfin USA
7. Finder's Keepers
8. Surf Jam
9. Let's Go Trippin

Surprised "Lana" and "Finders Keepers" are ranked low by so many.

1. Shut Down
2. Surfin' USA
3. Farmer's Daughter
4. Finders Keepers
5. Lonely Sea
6. Lana
7. Noble Surfer
8. Stoked
9. Let's Go Trippin'
10. Misirlou
11. Honky Tonk
12. Surf Jam

Had a couple great bouts rotation in my car, this album. It's been a while and I forgot how exciting it sounds. You know, I really like the instrumentals while I'm listening to them, yet they're still a little forgettable to me. But the songs with vocals stuck with me since the day I heard them. A great collection of songs.

10. Surf Jam
11. Lonely Sea - The spoken word kills it for me, otherwise it would be much higher.
12. Let's Go Trippin'

It'd be awesome if people started maybe saying what they like about tracks that warrants their placement on the list or something. A whole lot of threads full of ordered lists isn't very interesting or provoking for discussions...

#1: Lonely Sea. Probably The Beach Boys' most underrated pre-Pet Sounds song. Unique, because it combines the sound of the early surf hits with the soul of the Pet Sounds material. A few years ago I was wide awake in the middle of the night, all alone in a hotel room in Acapulco, Mexico with an amazing view over the Pacific Ocean. Right then I just had to hear this song. I took my iPod, sat down on the floor of the balcony, looked over the dark ocean and listened to this song about a dozen times. It was perfect.

Why do so many people rate Finders Keepers so low? This track doesn't often get discussed, and in my mind it has always stood out as an album highlight. I kind of assumed most people would agree, so this it surprises me.

I mean, what's not to like? It's got fun semi-bad-ass surfing lyrics with rad surfing lingo, it tells a goofy little story, it has unxpected shifts in rhythm, it kind of quotes a Four Seasons song with some nice harmonies.

So I'd be curious to know, for those of you who ranked it so low, what exactly you don't like about it.

I just think it is a weak, gimmicky song with a bad chorus. And the drum mistake near the end is inexcusable.

Love this album, the third BB album I bought, play it a lot, never skip a track.  Love the title song, Noble Surfer, Shut Down, and Honky Tonk was one of my early inspirations to learn guitar. I've always liked the surf instrumentals.

1. Surfin' USA - Sublime. The first stone cold amazing BBs song ever.
2. The Lonely Sea - Simply beautiful and I'm glad to see so many fans of it 'round here.
3. Shut Down - One of the band's better rockers. Awesomeness personified.
4. Farmer's Daughter - Lovely as all hell. Tremendous harmonies, really underrated stuff.
5. Finders Keepers - Quite nice! Like it. It's sorta funny.
6. Lana - Pretty good.
7. Let's Go Trippin' - Very well done cover.
8. Stoked - Original and cool.
9. Noble Surfer - More than decent. Good, in fact.
10. Miserlou - 'Nother cover, but hey, it's alright.
11. Surf Jam - Original and not too shabby.
12. Honky Tonk - Lesser than all those other surf rockers, but hey. Not bad at all.

Hmm, pretty damn good! Lotsa surf instrumentals, so it's easy to get bored, but most of them are quite good, actually.
Underrated gems like The Lonely Sea and Farmer's Daughter keep me coming back to it.

1. Surfin' USA - 317 (14)
2. Shut Down - 280 (5)
3. Lonely Sea - 262 (9)
4. Farmer's Daughter - 245
5. Stoked - 177
6. Lana - 160
7. Misirlou - 155
8. Noble Surfer - 138
9. Finders Keepers - 137
10. Let's Go Trippin' - 130
11. Surf Jam - 109
12. Honky Tonk - 84

My thoughts? I think Shut Down is overrated on this list, but much of the rest makes sense.  Interestingly, first place votes went exclusively to three songs.  The title track is once again the clear winner.

1. The Lonely Sea (I choked up the first time I heard this)
2. Surfin' USA (I remember a game I used to play with my dad. I would lay down on my stomach on a blanket, and he would pull it around the room and pretend we would pretend was a surfer riding a big wave. He would always sing this while doing it. Such fun childhood memories come back to me when I listen to this song.)
3. Lana
4. Farmer's Daughter
5. Finders Keepers (Fun chorus, just not the best song to close the album with, why not Lonely Sea?)
6. Honky Tonk (I'm so surprised to see so many people rating this as their least favorite song, to me it's the best early instrumental they did!)
7. Noble Surfer
8. STOKED!
9. Shut Down (The drums on the stereo version sounds REALLY odd, and not in a good way. They sound overly compressed or something)
10. Let's Go Trippin'
11. Misirlou (The Boys don't hold a candle to Dick Dale's version!)
12. Surf Jam (The song is as bland as its title)
