Title: Ask the Moderators
Post by: Jason on October 15, 2012, 02:18:38 PM
The other mods and I have decided to open a new sticky thread here.

It is intended for members who wish to have an open forum with each other and the mods about the workings of the board. From a personal standpoint I believe the moderators should be a bit more accountable to everyone on here, within reason of course. I would like to stress that we are not unapproachable individually; we'll gladly accept PMs if you don't want to speak publicly on this thread.

You guys do a damn good job. I really don't want to see this site become heavily moderated, maybe some clearer rules could be put up, and I think the various subfourms could be better consolidated, but this is still my favorite website on the internet.

people complain the mods are too lenient, if anything I think they're too strict!

I think the subforums are poorly organized. 99% of discussion seems to happen in "General On Topic Discussion" section, and the other portions of the board are, in comparison, very seldom used. A lot of the bad feelings that arise in the General Discussion forum could be mitigated by better structuring discussion. That's really the point of having subforums isn't it? So that people looking to talk about a particular category of thing that interests them don't have to wade through an overabundance of what doesn't.
The Smile Sessions subforum isn't used a whole lot and a lot of Smile discussion still ends up in the General Discussion section. The sandbox is where joke threads and off-topic things are supposed to be posted but many posters don't even check there.

I think things should be organized as:

1. News, Rumors, and Future Releases: Reunion stuff, remaster stuff, box set stuff, press releases, television appearances etc

2. Music Discussion: Any discussion about past Beach Boys releases, compilations, singles, LPs whatever should go here. The "General Music Discussion" should be made a subforum of this forum

3. Smile Shop/Sandbox whatever: Any joke threads, photoshop threads, personal introductions, offtopic threads or media heavy posts should go here. We have a forum for pictures/youtube videos but it can be kind of dead, so I think you could round up a lot of this board's potpourri into a sandbox type subforum.

Forum 2 will be dead within a few months. I've seen this format employed before and it never works.

You're right runners, posters left to their own devices will probably not have the self control to keep to that scheme. A lot of the regulars would adjust but a lot of the newer posters and trolls would just continue posting their random crap wherever the mood struck them. That's what the moderators are for, to move threads and enforce the new policy, and in time I think everyone would adjust.

I think it would be nice if the "South Park style" cartoon image of the group could be updated to include Dave, Bruce, Blondie, and Ricky. Or at least Dave and Bruce at bare minimum. Or maybe the cartoon could be done away with, in favor of a collage of pictures of the group of people I just named, along with the "extended family" that could include Billy Hinsche(sp?), Ed Carter, Bobby Figueroa, etc.

Title: Re: Ask the Moderators
Post by: runnersdialzero on October 18, 2012, 01:49:16 AM
Any way to have rotating images instead of just the South Park one? That might be the best idear, if it can be done. Not necessarily rotating South Park lineups, but anything Beach Boys related.

Title: Re: Ask the Moderators

that South Park picture is so dumb.

I like the board the way it is. I don't think it's up to anyone to entice people to check out the other areas. They are there for all who want to see them. I like that I can be upfront about things on here, and I feel like the environment on here is overall good. Some people are going to argue, that's a part of any board, but I think a good job is being done of keeping it from going off the rails. Really I like 95 percent of the people here and that's a great percentage.

I see that this is an old forum at this point, but as someone that very rarely posts, I thought I'd make some suggestions for potentially making this a more appealing/inclusive place.  In terms of Beach Boys internet communities I think this place is fantastic, and collectively we make up an incredibly knowledgable base with some legit insiders.  One of the things I like best about the Beach Boys is that there are so many obscure gems to mine for; whether that be unreleased songs, unusual stories, and interviews.  The fact that more and more incredible music and information continues to surface, a lot of it from the 60s-80s, is a very big reason why I keep returning to this site.  That said, I think there could be a lot more done to organize the board in such a way that this aspect of the board is given more weight.  It seems like most activity is relegated to the "General On Topic Discussions", and it can be frustrating to navigate this place.  Among other threads, I often feel like I have to sift through permanent threads listed at the top, best of lists/ favorite album/songs, and repetitive/rehashed topics.  My questions is this:

1)  Can we have a thread or multiple threads dedicated to surfacing new information/music/interview/news?  Can we do this without running the risk of copyright/legal trouble?  How can we clearly establish a guideline for surfacing rare/new material without pushing any buttons?  IMO, it has been great to discover all the new/rare beach boys media available in the Youtube thread, and something like this could maybe get more attention?

2)  Can the permanent threads have their own space outside of general topic?  Maybe in something called "Important Info and Rules and Guidelines"?

3)  Can there be a separate thread for best of lists and favorite songs?

Maybe I'm alone on this, but i think a lot more people, including myself, would be drawn in, and might contribute more if this were addressed on some level.  Thanks, and I appreciate all this board has done for continuing to feed my insatiable beach boys apetite.

-Sam

I just noticed that many of the threads i'm suggesting could fit into the "Reviews" forum, but would there be a better way to encourage people to post their best of lists and such in this forum as opposed to General on topic?

Title: Re: Ask the Moderators
Post by: Jason on April 26, 2013, 09:39:02 AM
I think the overemphasis on "best-of" lists and "rank the tracks" lists has become a bit much. I think it definitely needs to be cleaned up. For some reason, people post their "RIP" messages in the General forum, even when it's not related to the Beach Boys, although I make it a point to move them if I see them in time.

As far as having a thread for "new" stuff with regards to music and such, that thread in and of itself would become a mess. We can barely keep on the topic in a thread on one topic, let alone one which would be intended to grow and grow with each bit of news.

I did move over the sticky threads about "PMs" and "nonsense" to the Welcome board.

For the record, the mods and I have come to an agreement with regards to the rules on here. We're going to be watching the board a bit more carefully and we have a new policy in effect on bans. Each mod, at his own discretion, has the power to ban those who are clearly in violation of the rules.

First offense - Banned for 7 days
Second offense - Banned for 30 days (a month)
Third offense - Permanent ban and account deletion

In extreme cases, a first or second offense may be grounds for a permanent ban...again, at the discretion of the mod involved.

To me, the various threads are pretty easy to navigate.  It seems relatively easy to find the threads that are of interest, and ignore those that aren’t.

Plus, being able to check in with the various “honored guests” such as Stephen Desper and Jon Stebbins et al from time to time, that’s what’s makes this a very COOL and KEY resource.

The insults and personal attacks are a little tiresome, but hey it’s Teh Internets and well, there you go …

SO
I'm just not seeing a lot that needs to be "fixed"....

I've also created a new child forum for the General forum, called "Smiley Smile Reference Threads". As of now, the Vocal Credits and Smile Inventory threads are there. I will be checking out the forum for more possible threads to add. This will allow us to cut down on sticky threads and keep the board somewhat in order.

I've suggested this many times but nobody ever agrees for some weird reason. I think it's so stupid when The Smile Sessions board was created that discussions on the individual songs were confined into 16 separate threads. Why...? Isn't it bad enough that there are a hundred "what if Smile was released" threads every year on the General board? Actually, I'd love if the counterfactual threads could be moved to that third 'Smile Shop' idea.

There is a decade's worth of information stored in this forum that simply isn't available anywhere else, and sometimes the search function doesn't always work out. Please make things easier for people who are more interested in signal than noise.

And yeah, I know this board (http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/board,4.0.html) exists, but it's not what's being asked. Those child boards for the albums were executed improperly. People should be able to see a board for Smile discussion on the main page that they can make threads for. Same with Pet Sounds. These two album-oriented boards can co-exist with a "General Music Discussion" board that serves everything else from their discography.

One more main board that I'd like to see made especially is one for Beach Boy chords, sheet music, song compositions, scores, etc... That would be nice.

Title: Re: Ask the Moderators
Post by: Surfs Down on May 01, 2013, 01:16:41 PM
I agree on the chords/sheet music idea.  Although there is a very comprehensive tab site, surfermoon.com, it would be great to have a forum where we can work out more obscure items like harmonies, piano tabs, even chords for unreleased music.  I personally would love to know how to work out these songs on the guitar:  "Out in the Country", "Lonely Days", "Time to Live in Dreams", "Happy Birthday Freshman"

As a suggestion, I feel that the Unreleased BB Songs should be included in that forum. It probably will need to be updated pretty soon, but it still has some great info.

Hello to all the Mods,  You are doing a great job, which I mentioned in my welcome page, but will add here as well.  Now the serious stuff:  I have stopped posting for now, due to harassment.  Most, but not all, welcome new posters.  So - three questions that I need to have clear understanding of...
1.  Is it okay to say anything in a PM, no matter how nasty and vicious?
2.  Is there some button that I am not seeing, to save a post that you have put a lot of time and energy into, without posting it out-right?  I did that the other day, and when I came back from my fact finding mission, I had to start over.
3.  Another "tech" question.  I think I now need to remove my e-mail addy.  How do I do that?
Maybe one more.  Jason, Would it be okay to add that quote, by Noam Chomsky, to my signature, so all reading my posts know that at least I have the right to free speech?  Of course within "clean" limits.         Thanks for your time,    Will

First point...moderators have no say over what is said in PMs unless said PMs are posted publicly on the board. Posting PM content is a permanent ban. Second point, there isn't really a button to save posts; I'd recommend typing it in a word processor and saving it there before posting on the board. Third point, go to your profile, "Account Related Information", and uncheck "Hide Email Address From Public".

The Chomsky quote is public domain, so you can do what you will with it.

yup,   but :-X  Hi Mikie,  Thanks.   I'll have to deal with it as best I can, and move on.  I have been a Beach Boys fan for near the same 50 years they have been around.  I deserve to be on this board, even if I make a mistake now and then.  I could PM you to explain, but it is so obvious, as some of it has already been made public in posts.  Wish the whole thing had not gone even that far.  Is what it is as they say, can't get love from everybody in this world.  Just their personal opinion.  Thank You Jason for answering my inquiry so quickly.  Mikie, See you on the boards.  And, be careful in these woods... snarks, baiters and biters are everywhere you look.

So, do any mods konw happened to my account? I haven't posted in a few weeks and went to log in the other day, and it said that no account exists with my user name.  Same thing happened when I click the link to my user name in topics that I started (it still does--check the musicians' forum and click my name next to the e-collab thread).  I re-registered with the same name, and it was available.  Any idea what that's all about?  And can I hook up my old posts/info to this new account?

I already wondered why you re-registered. I really don't have a clue what happened to your account. I just checked your username in that specific topic, and noticed that your "old" account is labelled "guest". Which means somehow your account doesn't exist anymore. But how that happened? No clue. It does unfortunately also mean that your personal info (Pm's etc) is lost, and we cant connect your posting history to your new account. Sorry.   :-\

I know I bitch a lot about certain mods, but compared with the mods/admins of a Facebook group I'm a member of, they're doing a sterling and irreproachable job here. Some dude just posted some utterly gross images that defined the term "scatological", hundreds complained. Result ? Nothing. No response. The troll is still trolling (I assume, because I blocked him). Truly, we've little if anything to complain about. But... yeah, we do.  ;D

When I visit the board, I keep getting a pop-up saying I have a new message, and would I like to view it now.  I've viewed it dozens of times by now and can't get rid of the pop-up.  Anyone able to help?  It has been days now since I got the original message.

Not quite the same, but for years, the footer showing total messages and new messages said I had 2 new messages as its baseline. If I got a new message, it would show 3, and so on upward, but instead of 0 it was always 2. Somewhere along the line, that went away and it's now accurate. No idea what happened. Maybe it's a similar phenomenon.

Imagine a scenario where other user insults or in some other way writes something to a certain person to which this person wants to respond, but he doesn't want to derail the original conversation with personal off topic talk. He tries to send personal message to this other person, but he has blocked your messages. Is there any other possible way to respond personally to this other person's insults? Dear moderators.
I've run into this strange problem involving one Word, which apparently has been misused in a slandering way by some board members and Thus deemed inappropriate - and therefore will be automatically exchanged into another term when used!
The R-Word ending with 'etard' appears in a perfect palindromic limerick made by Will Thomas and is quoted by me several times in my wordgame threads.
But the auto-censor's alternate term completely ruins the Whole  limerick since it IS also a palindrome (where btw this R-Word has a total different meaning like 'holding back' or something).

So I only ask: Can the R-Word pass in this case  and the auto-censor be de-activated within the palindrome-threads or are there other options???

Hi moderators,
I'm guessing this is covered somewhere, but I've been unable to find it: how can I insert an image in a post? I see the "Insert Image" button, but what do I put between the tags?

Hey, I'm not a mod but can help you here. It's a bit of a faff but you first need to upload the image to a file host site (free and simple)
http://postimage.org/ Is a simple and easy one. That will give you a URL designed for forums, you can choose your size etc and the tags are often included.

Hope this helps.

Between the tags you put the web address (beginning with http:// and commonly ending with .jpg) of an image that already exists on the web. To get that address (known as the URL), you can right-click (or whatever is equivalent on your device) on an image on a web page and select "Copy image address" (or something similar saying "location" or "URL" instead of address), and then paste that address between the [img] and [/img] tags.

A way to figure out stuff like this is to click the quote button (http://smileysmile.net/board/Themes/helios_reinstall/images/english/quote.gif)in a post with a posted image (such as this), and look at the code of that post.

Updated rule #1 - " If after contacting them [the mods] you are not satisfied, you then should contact the board owner."

Small problem: doesn't work, because Chuckie doesn't respond. Ever. I've contacted him several times over the last two, three years regarding various issues I've had with the forum, and not received a single reply. Not. One.

Hi mods, if this is not a reasonable or feasible request, please ignore it; but I think many posters would prefer if the posts on the Rocky Pamplin thread from after DebbieKL's post on pg. 21 were moved to another thread. I should not have started an ethics debate in there.
I would say from my "can we judge" post before DebbieKL's but DebbieKL's was a legitimate question for Rocky.

SUGGESTION:

On some other forums there are 'thumbs up'  or '+1' options. Sometimes I want to agree with a post but can't be bothered to quote or reply as I don't feel I need to add anything. Is it an option within this template and do people think it could be quite a good idea?

Just thinkin' like...

Hi CinnaBeatle, I'm not a moderator, but my suggestion is to first do a good search to see if your question is asked and answered. If not, consider whether your question is likely to stir up a lot of debate. If not, or if you're on the fence, ask it in this thread:
http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,8214.6025.html
If so, go ahead and start a thread.

But it isn't the same. You still make a post with quoting your favorite post. Big difference.

It's the difference between one click on a "+1" button and one click on a "quote" button and typing a "+" and a "1" (or "This."). A tiny difference really, as I see it. But a major difference to the mods.  :hat

Moderator Question,

What do you guys have in place when one of you get embroiled in a thread and then moderate your own embroilment when issues arise? Seems to me it is a bit unfair to the other participants to moderate your own embroilment. There really should be a rule in place to not moderate your own discussions, especially when you are deeply woven in that discussion. Just a thought.

Apologies if this is a bit of a dumb question, but is it acceptable to bump a thread that hasn't been posted in in a little over 2 years? Most other forums I've been on discourage reviving threads over a year old, so I'm wondering if there's a similar rule here.

Title: Re: Ask the Moderators
Post by: ♩♬🐸 Billy C ♯♫♩🐇 on March 05, 2016, 04:42:29 PM
There was...then a few posters began getting pissy over creating new threads as opposed to bumping an existing thread.

Speaking only for myself, it depends on a case-by-case basis. If it's relevant, it's ok. If it's bumping just for the sake of bumping, then that's different

Title: Re: Ask the Moderators

Title: Re: Ask the Moderators
Post by: catlag on March 05, 2016, 06:49:50 PM
I've been replying on older threads because I've seen many new ones started and then someone posting a link to an existing thread about the same or similar thing. Please let me know if that's not the right way to go about it.

I suppose in the case of polls (like in BB media section) it's the right thing to go comment on older subjects. I think it's nice that newer members get to comment on older conversations... that can sometimes be revived, especially if a lot of time has passed.

My criterion for bumping an old thread is that it has information in it that might be of interest to a newer poster who would otherwise feel obliged to start a new thread rather than build on that possibly hard-won information.

Not sure I'd describe myself as pissy----pissed, perhaps, on increasingly rare occasions these days...

I do occasionally bump for the sake of bumping---when I'm bored. But not just any old thread----I try to find topical ones...

Shouldn't the appointment of a fresh mod be a democratic one? Mods co-opted don't seem to last too long (not all of them… but…)

But then should candidates be proposed, or apply? Either way, it would be a good idea to have them submit a statement - how they'd do the moderating, what their prejudices might be, perhaps religious beliefs, health issues, IQ level, criminal convictions etc - so that the SS members could form an informed opinion before they cast their vote. To avoid any of the daftness that made the recent Labour Party leader contest so interesting here in the UK, only SS members of two years standing or more would be allowed to vote.

I'm intrigued!

I think that it's pretty clear that what this board needs is a shakeup. Therefore, I nominate Rocky Pamplin as new moderator. Haven't seen anything official either but the workload for Billy and Craig to handle between them must be pretty heavy, and I don't think it's fair to expect two guys to be able to keep track on everything that goes on / goes down here. While things seem to be on something of a better footing (the two trolls seem a lot quieter at the moment) it's still a heavy burden to bear on top of what reL life throws at you too. An additional moderator must be "a good thing", I'd've thought.

I doubt they're actually looking for another mod, but here are some people who I think would be good mods:  drbeachboy, Emily, rangerover, smilin ed, adamghost and a few others.

I'd be willing to do it as well.  Not that anyone cares.  :P

Is it allowed to post tickets for sale? I bought some BW tickets for the May 17th show in Birmingham but to my immense displeasure I can no longer go, would I be allowed to advertise the StubHub link to the tickets in a thread? I really need to get rid of these tickets, no one else in my town is a big enough Beach Boys fan.
Thanks for any help.

Seriously.  Imagine becoming a moderator here.  Imagine having a small army of back-seat moderators constantly badgering you to ban X, or reinstate Y, or step into a discussion, or close a thread, or move a thread from one forum to another, or to explain yourself, or do your job differently in any number of ways.  Imagine taking criticism for every act of moderation you make, because it's sure to have upset somebody.  Imagine being pulled to pieces for getting too involved, or for not getting involved enough.  Imagine your every action, either patiently explained in public or conducted discreetly in private, raked over for evidence of agendas, allegiances and biases.  Imagine board members trying to get you removed or replaced if they take against you for whatever reason.  Imagine the constant background hum of unanimous mithering that the board is spiralling into fatal decline and it's definitely your fault for not doing your job properly.

Imagine wanting to sign up for that job.  And then imagine still wanting to listen to the Beach Boys at the end of the day.

Mr. Desper, if you're still having trouble, this may be of help:

Go to https://old.postimage.org/?_ga=1.188159275.2094674251.1484916807

Resize "for message boards".

Drag your image to the desktop. It should then show up in "select files to upload".

Click on "upload it!" Once it's uploaded, click on it again and then drag it to the post. Then enclose the code in img and /img [both in square brackets] as Billy explained.

I hope this makes sense...

With grateful thanks to a Mr Andersson for alerting me to this handy method...

When will I be allowed to make poll threads?

2. Is it possible to edit the title or first post of the thread I made forever?

I've messaged the link again with a request to delete both posts (mine, and his with my quote in his post). You modified it to my latest edit, but I feel there are still serious issues with it, like there being a non-sequitur and there still being problems with the post itself. I've also messaged you privately. Thanks.

Guitarfool mentioned in one of his posts there that he joined to try and work out some peace between the two boards. After last week’s flairup it kind of made sense. I’m sure he’ll still be a major part of this forum.

I gotta say, the ensuing posts that happened after GF showed up there ranged from welcoming to downright weird. Have anger of certain events that occurred here? Totally normal and I think everyone on both sides thinks they’re 100% in the right about how they feel so it makes sense that people were a bit edgy about his arrival. But DrBeachBoy took it to a whole other level of wtf: taunts GF by name calling, admits he lied to bait Guitarfool in a post, then says he enjoys the smell of feces or something, then gets banned for some childish retort to the admin there; not really a gleaming example of the stability of the membership over there :lol

But things seem pretty sound now and I’m sure GF’s membership there will prove to be positive for the fan community through the years to come. And all the usual kinks seem to be working themselves out as time goes on, DrBeachboys ban I’m sure won’t be the last from that group...it is kind of telling that no matter what board those guys are on, most of them get scolded or banned repeatedly.

It seems that after a few mods posted what I thought were pretty reasonable requests for acceptance and tolerance, the negative response (PREsponse) died down.

Hopefully everyone everywhere can get over themselves and their drama to just talk online about The Beach Boys, music, or whatever else is permissible on each board—and not obsess or bitch (whether initially justified or not)—about other boards and members.

Question:   How do I post a photo from Windows 10 - "photos"?  I have a few photos from my camera that have been put into files in the photo sections of MSWindows 10.  Is it possible to get them posted onto the Smileysmile message board? I know how to post photos from the Internet using the image web address button, but how do you post images from the Windows 10 photo section?  Someone suggested a third-party interface. Is there any other way to post -- more direct.

Hello Stephen, unfortunately there is no way to upload images directly from a user's computer files or hard drive onto the board. Some message board platforms do allow it, but the best way to do it in general is to get an online photo host site on which to upload and store your images.

I used to use Photobucket but they changed to a pay service with ridiculous monthly fees and restrictions on "hotlinking" image URL's to message boards or blogs. This is why many of my previous posts containing photos now have no photos.

I switched to and would recommend you try Imgur, here: https://imgur.com/ (https://imgur.com/)

They are a free photo hosting site with an easy to use platform. Sign up, get the password, and you can start uploading any images from your computer's files or even direct from a phone or camera's storage. When you upload an image, you will see a menu that has a "direct link" option, which you can then copy and paste that URL here or elsewhere as you would with any other image found online. And you can set privacy settings and accessibility so your files being hosted can be protected.

Until or unless Imgur decides to start changing and charging crazy fees as other sites had done, I'd recommend giving them a try. They're the best hosting site I found, and have had no issues...plus, they allow remote direct linking which is what I think you're looking for.

As I mentioned in the Beach Boys general discussion channel, Fred Vail has said that crowdfunding to give him directly the much needed support to release the Fred Vail album commercially. I have agreed to kickstart things a little, and he was happy to hear that. Would one of the moderators here, who is reliable be willing to quite simply create a GoFundMe account (which is completely free, by the way) so that we could all start donating to it? We already have an anonymous donor who's willing to put in £250, and some more.

Ideally, it would be Billy, as he's cool. So I guess I should address you Billy directly -- are you happy to make this account quickly and share the link with us?  If not, I'll take it upon myself to raise after in the start of April.

There have been issues before with people who log in using their phones or mobile devices. I think most if not all eventually straighten out as described above, but some mobile carriers which use certain IP addresses could hit on an address which is banned from the board and that's why it shows up that way for the user. Best fix to try is the one listed above for now, clear all cache and cookies and try again. If someone can log in using a laptop or computer but can't on a mobile device with the same user info, the mobile device and IP seems to be the cause.

Several of my friends have recently posted on SmileySmile and within an hour their postings were taken down. All their posts had one thing in common, my name, Stephen W. Desper.

Is there a problem associated with using my name for a discussion topic?  This is a "Beach Boy Discussion Board" is it not?  Are some topics off-limits? If so, what could possibly be so offensive about using my name, Desper in any Beach Boy discussion topic?

Please advise.

Hi, my name is Jeanne Thornton, and I'm the author of a novel called Summer Fun, recently out from Soho Press. The book is about a transgender woman living in New Mexico in the early 2000s who's writing obsessive fan letters to a reclusive musician named B--, leader of a fictional 1960s band from California called the Get Happies, who largely vanished from the public eye after failing to complete a masterpiece psychedelic album called "Summer Fun." As a very big fan of an ACTUAL California band from the 1960s that folks here have certainly heard of, I think there is some obvious relevance to this forum, and I suspect that people here might enjoy it.

But I also don't want to be weird in how I post about my book. Is there any guidance from moderators? I'm not sure what the policy is for things like this and where/if this might be okay to post.

Thank you for any guidance you can provide, and thank you for moderating a forum that I've enjoyed lurking for some time!

Hello Jeanne, and welcome! Since your book is inspired by the music and the musicians we all talk about here, I say go ahead and post about it on the "General On Topic Discussions" forum. And maybe it would be interesting to members here if you would like to mention any specific references to or from the Beach Boys' own story and how it may have inspired the plot or characters in your book. I think it sounds like a very interesting story and would definitely like to hear more!
