The guys should get together and do a PR release explaining the situation - just the facts etc. Current existing bookings, license arrangement; no one got fired (if I understand the situation correctly); future collaboration; etc. It would go a long way to stop the "sensationalism" reporting going on. That is, hopefully, they can do so...

Yep, this thing's gone viral now. NOT good for the legacy of the band. And just when I was really beginning to like Mike Love.

One guy said he was the biggest d!ck in Rock and Roll.  Even moreso than Lars from U2.

So am I right in saying: basically we already knew Mike/Bruce faction would continue but to go on with the "Beach Boys Legacy," they needed to fire the rest of the guys??!?!

that doesn't make sense. Why not just say the guys are going their own separate ways. Hopefully we'll be able to get to the bottom of this on monday when we meet with Alan Boyd.

This is nuts. I didn't think the guys would really have to deal with this. But it looks like they will have to soon. And announce what their plans are.

yeah, well don't forget that after his R&R hall of fame speech in 1988, Mike was at a loss to figure out what all of the controversy was about.  He was convinced he had made the Beach Boys the stars of the show with his rant.  He has ALWAYS come from the school of "any publicity is good publicity".  He is probably telling his (now "fired") bandmates that he should get a bigger piece of the reunion income because of the sh**load of free publicity he has brought them.  Seriously.

"Thank God he didn't kick out Stamos!"
"We should flood Mike Love with angry telephone calls. Anyone know Kokomo's area code?"

He'd disagree with his own book, I'm sure of it!
I can see it now, the after one page of confessions...the next few pages interviewer asked him about part of those confessions and says, "did I say that? you're crazy!"
As the interviewer asked, yeah, just let me turn the page and show you...."no, no need to show me..."  interviewer asks why to which Mike says, do you know the song Only With You from Holland? Interviewer responds yes...Mike then goes on and says, "wasn't the past 2 minutes genius?"

Then the reader realizes he or she has wasted the past 5 minutes re-imagining the whole situation.

Oh, c'mon Ontor, methinks we can do better than this...

Can't believe I'm gonna send up one of my favorite cuts here, but sing along to "Mess of Help to Stand Alone":

I need a whole Maharishi
To keep my temper from flarin'
I need a hat on my bald pate
To keep my forehead from glarin'
I need a court for me to litigate
And some young chicks who can titillate
Don't touch my jug or I'll pull the plug
Thanks to the taint of all that Wilson blood...

What the hell?  How do you fire Brian, Al, and Dave.

F*** you Mike Love.

Aren't they playing Wembley tomorrow night?  What odd timing.

Summer's gone, indeed.  I guess the concerts this year were too good for Mike.  He'd rather play casino's with Uncle Jesse.

Beach Boys break up again -- Brian Wilson, 2 others, forced out

Mike Love, who owns the name of the Beach Boys, has canned three band members, including Brian Wilson.

Love announced that the group will split after finishing concerts this week in the U.K.. Wilson, widely considered the creative genius behind the band, Al Jardine and David Marks have been dumped from the group, according to the Huffington Post. The report said three did not find out they had been dropped until Love and Bruce Johnston released a public statement.

Isn't this like Ron Wood and the Stones' touring bassist deciding to fire Mick, Keith and Charlie?

The statement reads: "The post-50th anniversary configuration will not include Brian Wilson, Al Jardine and David Marks. The 50th Reunion Tour was designed to be a set tour with a beginning and an end to mark a special 50-year milestone for the band."

So, in other words, we want to keep on living off Brian Wilson's music, dividing the money up between two people instead of five.

The exiting Beach Boys will be replaced by the group's longtime backing band, which includes Love's son Christian, according to the London Telegraph newspaper. Love did say the decision to drop the three members was financially motivated, though not the way one might think.

"You've got to be careful not to get overexposed. There are promoters who are interested (in more shows by the reunited lineup), but they've said, 'Give it a rest for a year'. The Eagles found out the hard way when they went out for a second year and wound up selling tickets for $5."

Yet Love and Johnston will keep on getting exposed on tour.

Wilson was blindsided.

"I'm disappointed and can't understand why he (Love) doesn't want to tour with Al, David and me," he told CNN. "We are out here having so much fun. After all, we are the real Beach Boys."

If the five members of the Beach Boys do not rekindle their bond, the Sept. 28 concert at Wembley Stadium may be the last show they play together, CNN noted.

There is already a petition on iPetition.com asking for Love, who owns the rights to the band's name, to rethink the decision to break up the original Beach Boys.

The petition, addressed to Love, reads: "In order to preserve the validity of 'The Beach Boys' as a whole, and not as a 'money saving, stripped down version' that only contains 1 original member, and 1 member that joined in 1965, we ask you to reinstate the 3 other members to the touring group for your final years performing."

"It's the right thing to do, and it's what the fans want," the message concludes.

Amen.

Jardine linked to the petition in a tweet. As of Wednesday morning, it had more 2,000 signatures.

In December 2011, the Beach Boys confirmed 50 shows to celebrate their 50th anniversary, Rolling Stone previously reported. The band formed in California in 1961. The reunion tour marks the first time the Boys have toured together in more than two decades.

Although the group had problems in the past, like nasty comments in the press and numerous lawsuits, Love swore that all the negativity was behind them. "All that stuff is long forgotten," he told Rolling Stone.

Not anymore.

Back in June, Rolling Stone reported that Love booked shows for his version of the Beach Boys without consulting the other members.

Well... neither does Mike 'own' the band name nor is the 'new' touring configuration leading to money being split up between 2 instead of 5.

It's ridiculous.  The only person in BRI who voted against Mike getting the license was Al.  Brian voted for it, Carl's people sided with Mike, and David toured with Mike (which apparently did not make Al happy, either).  It's just lazy journalism abetted by the speed of the Internet.

Someone just needs to post a version of this on every one of these stupid things. I'm a media person, and I hate the media at times like this ...

No one wants to listen to the truth and everyone wants to hate Mike Love. Yahoo! news, known world-round for their quality and dedication to the facts, are a more reputable sources than someone who's actually been following the story for half a year now.

Seriously, some kind of statement needs to be issued over this. The people behind these "stories" have sunk really, really low in order to attract attention to themselves.

You are exactly right.  Someone from BRI needs to issue an actual statement to set the record (whatever it is) straight.  It's kind of sad that after all of the "good" Beach Boys stuff we've been blessed with in 2012...this is how the year is ending??

I'm like 90% sure there's marketing decisions behind all this hoopla regarding the post-50th plans.

Seems a little too perfectly orchestrated.

However if it showcases the fact the general public and not just hardcore fans want to see Brian Wilson with the Beach Boys, then I hope Capitol Records & Mike Love are paying attention. Get them to all sign contracts for their 31st.
