Title: Songs about The Beach Boys, individually or collectively
Post by: Myk Luhv on September 16, 2012, 01:44:31 AM
This could be a fun and fascinating thread: Let's compile a list (with the music [via YouTube or whatever] too if possible) of songs about our favourite group or any of its constituent members. Whether it's lyrics and music or just one of 'em, bring it on. Now's your chance to bust out that song you really like written about Bruce or Al~ Bonus if your song is in a genre not generally associated with the kind which might have such a group as an obvious influence, has an interesting story behind it or an otherwise good quote! Here are two to start...

Tullycraft - "I Kept The Beach Boys" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzIHSCGBulo) (Surf Beat Fun, 2002)

John Cale - "Mr. Wilson" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UuyRvoITY4) (Slow Dazzle, 1975)

Okay friends, now it's your turn!

There's a Belle and Sebastian song that includes a lyric about loving Brian, Dennis, Carl and Al and even finding it my heart to love Mike Love. Can't remember the name but it's a nice moment from a good band.

If mere references do count, there's a track called "Surf Song" on the fabulous Smell the Mitten LP by The Hot Toddies where the big guy is referenced:

"Bonfire on the beach, whoa! / Pacifico and some mushroom tea, whoa! / Dude I must be tripping / Is that Brian Wilson up on the hill?"

Blazing Salads: "Life of Brian" (1993)

Blazing Salads were two iconic Oz rock legends, Glenn Shorrock (former lead singer of Little River Band) and Brian Cadd. Here's a link to the lyrics: http://www.lrb.net/html/lyrics/lifeofbrian.txt

Also can throw in Oz's Richard Clapton with his 1984 single, "Goodbye Barbara Ann".

It's always Melinda's idea.

Brian, why did you adopt 9 children and 14 dogs even though you could die at any moment within the next 15 years?

"Well, my wife thought it was a good idea."

Tbf, having a dog and another shot at fatherhood is probably good for Brian's psyche.

It's just the quantity that's rather alarming....

I remember hearing that a line in the Beatles "Happiness is a Warm Gun" about the "all American bullet-headed Saxon mother's son" was about Mike. Not sure if that is try though.

actually, that line's from "The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill", which is about Richard Cooke whose mother was studying with the Maharishi at the same time the Beatles (and Mike) were in Rishikesh. he killed a tiger.

Ok, I cried a little. I'd love to hear this guy's reasoning for picking some of the moments that he chose and leaving out other more obvious ones. Little Darian looks like my best friend's lesbian sister. And I kind of wish he didn't kill him at the end.

Another song about/inspired by the Beach Boys by one of my favorite bands: American Music by the Violent Femmes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8KGHatrPWE

Drummer DeLorenzo, who arranged the song, has an especially interesting take on it, relating both to the backing vocals and the drug line. "It's a little love letter to Brian Wilson, saying, 'Get well soon,'" he says. "I moved it away from a thrash Johnny Thunders feel, which is how Gordon wrote it, and turned it into a shuffle. In fact, the 'drug' line is Gordon's own little homage to Johnny Thunders. Nobody's going to get that, but that's what we talked about. But a lot of American music for me comes down to the Beach Boys, and that's why we had to have the sleigh bells, the background vocals, the timpani, the keyboards. We even quote 'I Can Hear Music' at the end of the song. It's pretty wet. There's a lot of surf in that song!"

I think it's more about God.

I’ve been alive forever,
And I wrote the very first song.
I put the words and the melodies together,
I am music,
And I write the songs.

I write the songs that make the whole world sing.
I write the songs of love and special thing s.
I write the songs that make the young girls cry.
I write the songs, I write the songs.

My home lies deep within you,
And I’ve got my own place in your soul.
Now, when I look out through your eyes,
I’m young again, even though I’m very old.

Chorus

Oh my music makes you dance
And gives your spirit to take a chance,
And I wrote some rock ’n’ roll so you can move.
Music fills your heart,
Well, that’s a real fine place to start.
It’s from me it’s for you,
It’s from you, it’s from me,
It’s a world wide symphony.

Chorus

I am music, and I write the songs.

This is a classic, so many songs in there, count ‘em!
‘Love Those Beach Boys’ by The Sea Shells (Goliath 1357) 1964

plus

probably the same group

‘Our Surfer Boys‘  by  The Surf Bunnies (Goliath 1352) 1963

The Scavenger’ by Gary Paxton,  (Garpax 44177) 1963

FLICK FORWARD TO 3:08 MINUTES FOR THIS!!!

“I shut down The Beach Boys in their 409…”

Notice in the later cover by Capitol labelmate Dick Dale,  the lyrics were changed to

“I shut down the hodads in their 409…”

Quite right too.

‘The Story Of The Rockers’ by Gene Vincent (Playground P100) 1968 written by Jim Pewter

and

for those of us who love those instrumentals, (where are you Louie?), here’s a tribute to the sandbox called ‘Brian’s Beached Piano‘ by Dave Wronski & Slacktone from the album ‘Into The Blue Sparkle’ (Goboy 1002) 2000

1. In Sonic Youth's Tunic (Song for Karen), Kim Gordon relates, "I'm in heaven now - I can see you, Richard/Goodbye Hollywood, goodbye Downey/Hello Janis, hello Dennis, Elvis". Since the middle Wilson also features in the video to Sonic Youth's Teenage Riot, I think we can be pretty confident that "Dennis" is our man.

2. Soko sings that she will "never love you more than", inter alia, "God Only Knows".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdZhQrhtRac

3. I long ago lost my copy of Look! Listen! Vibrate! Smile!, but I recall reading in it than some manner of punk rock band had a song called Kill Mike Love.

r u loco?!! its not bb brian, do some searchin'..

Actually, it is, according to Marilyn when I asked her in 1983, and again in 1986.

2john k: Thanks for bringing this thread up again! Your list is very impressive, though 1 tune, Andi's "Perfect Summer Day" can't be found. It's posted on the other forum at page 2. Can you update the link since you, actually, shared that song? Thanks in advance.

"Jesus Loves You, Brian Wilson" by Lost Dogs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0OhPBKoHUE
Jolly good, only I'd rather get rid of those repetitive "doo wah doo wah"s.

Nice to see this thread is still going! I forgot one, "Universal Frequencies" by His Name Is Alive, from Stars on ESP (4AD, 1996). William Defever, the group's mastermind and sole constant member, said during period interviews that this song was his attempt to write a sequel to "Good Vibrations".

"Universal Frequencies" by His Name Is Alive (http://youtu.be/VbIVwqU-KzI)
Fine attempt, beautiful church organ ending. Still, as it usually is, the initial version is superior to the follower(s).

Some additions: Billy Hinsche - One In A Million;
Kayla Williams - First American Band;
Alan Carvell - Every Wilson Tune;
The Righteous Brothers - Rock & Roll Heaven (remake);
The Four Seasons - No Surfin' Today;
Dan Scarpa - Vanilla Island;
Bikeride - Carl Wilson Suite
Entire album dedicated to Carl called "The CW Lake Mystery"

Thank you for your kind words! And thanks for pointing out that the link to the song by Andi has done a runner.

After a spot of detective work I discovered that "Perfect Summer Day" is a composition by Dave Coe with lyrics (and, i assume, vocals) by Andrea C. Crimmins. Okay, it's a demo but it's still a song about The Beach Boys, and surely that justifies its inclusion in this topic:

There's a Kathy Mattea country song called "455 Rocket".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQZV6q00sUc

It's about her buying a car from a little old lady, and the car has a huge engine in it.  She drives it all over the place, and wrecks it one day... there's a line where she says "As we skidded... I thought I heard the angels sing.... It sounded like the Beach Boys"

Wow, very impressive investigation, John! Thank you again! I immediately liked that song, understated beauty.

NB: Since there's no download link & because I'm not a fan of just on-line listening to music, more of a downloader, I did some detective work too & found this really useful information:

Via lots of soundcloud interconnections I found a band "The Sunny Boys". Was amazed by their BBs renditions of Surfin' Safari & Barbara Ann, so I also checked their self-penned songs, & one of them featured the line about the BBs at 37 sec. mark: https://soundcloud.com/thesunnyboys/03-the-sunny-boys-mahalo

Nice song, the a cappella intro is terrific, kind of reminisces "Island Girl" (although I'd say it about 80% of "Mahalo", steel drum solo & all). Even the singer sounds like a cross between Al & Bruce. That being said, there's 1 thing better than on "Island Girl" - accordion instead of saxophone. Added some sweet touch to the tune.

Blimey…   hadn't dipped into this thread before. DW Suite starts off with a favourite tune (it's a trad Scottish folk song) of my partner's late husband.

Also Custer's marching song. For all the good it did him.

The melody at the beginning is "Wild Mountain Thyme" - a traditional Scottish tune. Later in the song you hear "Garryowen" which is a traditional Irish march that Custer was fond of. I've always wondered why Buckingham incorporated these Celtic melodies into a tribute to Dennis. Was it simply because Wilson is a Scottish surname?

Cool to see this one mentioned....I had a very minor role in writing this song, though I didn't realize it name-checked the Beach Boys.  The song itself is about a local musician who played in a few semi-known L.A. bands in the '80s and '90s.

The Guardian reprinted a 1990 article about Sonic Youth, which says:

Quote
....the video for the next 45, the Karen Carpenter tribute Tunic, has already been shot and that’ll feature no end of stars.

“We did it at the university in Boston,” explains Thurston. “..... It’s got a lot of cutout figures and puppets – a little like Sgt Pepper’s. We all play different people. I play Richard Carpenter, Kim’s Karen, Lee’s Elvis and Steve’s Dennis Wilson.

“Steve had to be Dennis, because he’s the only one in the band who’s ever surfed. How could anyone play a Beach Boy without having surfed?”

The article:
http://www.theguardian.com/music/2015/jun/10/sonic-youth-1990-say-are-you-anti-american-i-think-its-pretty-cool-people-should-be-anti-american
