A big night at the Orient Hotel last night, I'll let others tell their stories.

For those who didn't catch the plans for this afternoon we are going to meet up at the Novotel Hotel at Homebush at 5pm. The Novotel is around 800m from the venue.

Filming for the documentary starts at 4pm at Allphones - get there ASAP and get your head in the shot. Nelson has asked us to put the call out for volunteers.

Just came back from the show. Absolutely fantastic, like no other experience. The boys were smoking! All the vocals were fantastic, especially Al's. David's leads were out of this world. 52 songs and I loved each and every moment.

On a sad note, Brian looked as docile as ever. It's too bad this is the last time the boys as a group will really ever tour again, they were amazing.

I have to commend Mike's, Al's and Bruce's showmanship, they were so professional. Brian was good in introducing Carl and Dennis. David should have had more of a part, I did love his leads and his lead vocal on Getcha Back.

Awesome show.

Pretty par for the course for Brian. He has looked that way through the whole tour. Also, I wouldn't bank on this being the last tour just yet.

I thought Brian was a bit up and down. I think his performance in the second set was better than the first. On stuff like H&V, IJWMFTT, Sail On Sailor etc..

I haven't really been following the set lists so it was a pleasant surprise to hear David on Getcha Back and I thought he did a stellar job. Overall a great performance especially from Al who I had never seen before.

Oi.  "Experienced fan" here, seen Brian every Australian tour since '99, usually multiple times, still coming down from the high of the show.

Brian was clearly having an off day at first -- back pain, clipped vocals, fairly slumped, offstage even before the band finished the final chord of IGA.  By the second set, though, he was much more into it -- doing his full dance moves on "Sail On Sailor", singing a great IJWMFTT and earning a standing ovation for "Good Vibrations", and absolutely nailing both the tracks off the new album.  Heck, he even sang some of the choruses on "Kokomo"!

The rest of the group was top-notch -- Mike was in great form (his description of them as a "used rock group" was a delight), but Al was the breakout star (the crowd let out an "awww!" of delight when "Then I Kissed Her" kicked off, and he got huge responses to "Come Go With Me" and "Cotton Fields").

And David Marks is unspeakably cool.  What he did to "Pet Sounds" was like watching the Venus De Milo get up and dance.  That thing *swung*!

Lots lots more from the before-show and after-show stuff later, when I've recovered.

Oh, and I've got the setlist in my bag; it's *53* songs.  Details when I wake up.  But Scott Totten absolutely nailed "Let Him Run Wild", made it his own...

Cheers,
Jon Blum

Awoken and refreshed!!

 ;D

Brian was on last night, big time, a few botched vocals and timing (false start on TWGMTR scotched the miming theory), most of his hiccups were minor. Sail On Sailor was fantastic but IJWFTT was spectacular, Brian nailed it with a great contribution from Al. I'm not sure what people's expectations are of Brian, surely by now fans of the band know the story and whys and why nots.

Al is the MAN! His voice is fantastic especially on Cottonfields and Then I Kissed Her.

Bruce was high in the mix and his vocals a bit strained (especially on Wendy) but that's not a surprise given the night before ...  ;)

Dave is Mr Cool

Mike Mr Showmanship.

The band ... FANTASTIC ... as usual.

Thought the first set went a bit flat around the Good Timin' and Ballad Of Ol' Betsy section. Betsy should be dropped, it sucked the vibe out of the room, toss it and bring back This Whole World (or Surf's Up - the band want to do it). Second set was awesome with the Pet Sounds >>> SMiLE >>> Carl And The Passions >>> Holland opening and then just rollicking along to the encore.

The girlfriend made me dance to Fun x 3 and singalong and sway to Kokomo ... To my surprise I don't feel dirty for doing so and the world didn't end so my karma must still be good.

Man, Marc and his crew are filming the bejebus out of everything that moves on this tour, there are three DVD productions in the works ... this is going to be spectacular. Also the video feed within the venue from Marc's crew was fantastic.

I reckon about 75% to 80% capacity - I certainly didn't expect a crowd on that size.

Which reminds me - one thing from last night was the volume of the crowd singalong when songs were being played. Amazing! Not just the usual song a long songs, it was every song (except All This IS That)  ;D

and so you should be!!

A few others wouldn't be saying that just yet. I wonder when the pub last had a Kiwi Haka at 3.00 a.m.

I've got what looks like a pretty reasonable video of Let Him Run Wild I'll put up when I get home  - if you are reading Scott, absolutely brilliant, as is Darian's Darlin. I'm glad they spread a few songs around.

Great, great show last night, and some great social activities as well!! Thanks Tony and everyone else who made it a great couple of days.

Is that right? Wow that is 3 more DVDs than a lot of people were expecting!

Any info you can share how you've confirmed that and if you can tell us how different each DVD will be from one another?   Three separate DVDs sounds like a tall order...I'd have to guess each one would have its own identity for it to stand alone and not have too much carryover from the other discs....?

Brian was on last night, big time, a few botched vocals and timing (false start on TWGMTR scotched the miming theory),

Yeah, I'd forgotten that one -- he dived right in on the opening notes.  But aside from that, I was stunned by his performance on "Radio" -- really strong, fully enthused.  And we know how tricky that one had been for everyone in the past...  And the audience really took that one to heart, just like one of the hits, which was really heartening...

"Isn't It Time", again Brian was very on with his opening, and the new all-Beach-Boys arrangement worked well -- unfortunately the audience seemed fairly muted for that one.  Guess maybe it doesn't have the singalong chorus kind of thing.  (Afterwards Probyn said that that song was a weird one for the band -- none of them played on the recording, it was all Joe Thomas' studio cats, and it's not really in any kind of usual Beach Boys style.  But then... how many bands are still doing something new after fifty years?)

Another little Brian highlight was him singing the "Two waves and I / Both travel by" in "All This Is That"!  In a lower octave with someone else doing Carl's actual part, but really nice.

Quote
Thought the first set went a bit flat around the Good Timin' and Ballad Of Ol' Betsy section. Betsy should be dropped, it sucked the vibe out of the room, toss it and bring back This Whole World (or Surf's Up - the band want to do it).

I dunno, it seemed to go down well with some of the more casual fans at the Opera House last time -- and my wife had never heard it before, and it delighted her!  (Then again, she's the child of an old petrol-head, and she once bought her dad Queen's "I'm In Love With My Car" for a birthday present, so yeah.)

"Good Timin'" was a bit of a misfire -- Brian's singing was clipped and at one point a bit off-mic, there seemed a bit of confusion about who was handling the pickup to the chorus (e.g. "About..."), and Al did the chorus.

OTOH, songs which were absolute revelations were some of the later material -- I loved the extra key change used to finish off "Getcha Back" (BTW David said the other night that the reason Mike wants him to sing it is because Mike originally wrote it with Dennis in mind for the lead!), "It's OK" really worked with Brian on "Find a ride...", and "Rock And Roll Music" properly rocked and rolled for the first time.

Special bonus mention of the backing band going berserk towards the end of the show -- on R&R Music Nelson dashed all the way across the stage for a cowbell solo, then Paul von Mertens made a break for the limelight on "Do You Wanna Dance", and there were at least three people playing on John's drumset (John, Scott Bennett, and Nelson) by "Surfin' USA"...

Cheers,
Jon Blum

Which reminds me - one thing from last night was the volume of the crowd singalong when songs were being played. Amazing! Not just the usual song a long songs, it was every song (except All This IS That)  ;D

Oh yeah -- I can barely speak today.  I think I was singing almost as much as the band...

Cheers,
Jon Blum

The full setlist --

Do It Again (Brian on bridge)
Little Honda / Catch A Wave / Hawaii / Don't Back Down / Surfin' Safari
Surfer Girl
You're So Good To Me (Brian on lead)
Getcha Back (David)
Please Let Me Wonder
Wendy (Bruce)
Kiss Me Baby (just stunning)
Let Him Run Wild ("in B", according to setlist.  Scott Totten rules.)
And Then I Kissed Her (Al's first lead, got a delighted "aww" from the opening notes)
Darlin' (Darian')
Isn't It Time
Come Go With Me (also a surprise success)
Why Do Fools Fall In Love (Scott and Jeff)
When I Grow Up To Be A Man
Disney Girls (really expressive reading from Bruce)
Good Timin' (Brian and Al)
It's OK (Mike, Brian on coda)
Cottonfields (this was *huge*)
Be True To Your School
The Ballad of Old Betsy (Scott Totten)
Don't Worry Baby (with special Smile Foundation charity video)
Little Deuce Coupe / 409 / Shut Down / I Get Around

Pet Sounds (Dave)
Add Some Music (curiously, with only three mics...)
Heroes And Villains (also a big success with the crowd)
I Just Wasn't Made For These Times
Sloop John B (the vintage video for this was *hysterical*)
Wouldn't It Be Nice (again, *huge* for the crowd)
In My Room
All This Is That
That's Why God Made The Radio
California Saga (Mike and Al)
Sail On Sailor
Forever (with Dennis video)
God Only Knows (with Carl video)
Good Vibrations (standing ovation)
California Girls
All Summer Long / Help Me Rhonda / Rock And Roll Music / Do You Wanna Dance / Surfin USA (in E)

Kokomo
Barbara Ann (Brian on bass) / Fun Fun Fun (in Eb)

...oh, when the soundcheck went on, we overhead the backing band doing a kick-ass "Pinball Wizard".  Imagine Mike Love singing that...

Cheers,
Jon Blum

Thanks for that Jon.. The setlist points out why I was angry that Brian was flat or whatever "early". He was great on Do it Again and sang backing on all the following songs till his part in Sufer Girl. Then sang Your so Good to me brilliantly!

Man, Marc and his crew are filming the bejebus out of everything that moves on this tour, there are three DVD productions in the works

Got that from Marc and Mark the video guys, over a long rambling conversation which by the time it happened I'd had quite a few beers in the system so i don't remember the exact details, one is a show video the other two are hazy but they definitely mentioned three. Actually it was hard to concentrate as we were still absorbing news that there is about to be a merging of the Johnstons and the Rineharts ... Perth will be interesting!

The Australian shoots have been concentrating on getting crowd shots, reactions, interviews, etc.

The amount of equipment and the number of people involved in the shoot (including David's son) is considerable, there is some serious money being put into this project.

Good stuff. Thanks Tony.  It sounds like they've picked up momentum with the other DVD projects as they went overseas (from the US) which is totally fine with me.  I'm still optimistic about what we can expect and this update just makes me feel even better about it.  Hope they don't screw it up!

"Getcha Back" (BTW David said the other night that the reason Mike wants him to sing it is because Mike originally wrote it with Dennis in mind for the lead!),

Very interesting to know! Now I wonder how the song would sound like if Dennis took the lead.

Mike wrote a song with Dennis in mind even after he had passed on? Proof that they loved each other all along?  :o

Did I read it correctly that the group wants to perform Surf's Up?

See, I thought "You're So Good" was one of his weaker vocals, actually -- he was barking it more than singing it, it didn't seem as easy as at the TLOS and Gershwin shows.  "Isn't It Time" was the first lead where I thought he really nailed it.

For me the revelation was Brian introducing the Dennis and Carl videos -- suddenly he sounded completely natural and at ease, in a way I've *never* heard before!

He did pretty well with You're So Good to Me in Nagoya--he was singing it pretty expressively.  Seems like it might be a bit tough song to sing, though.

Couple of details gleaned from the pre-show dinner and drinks...

*  Dave *is* playing the lead on "Beaches in Mind" (though he's kinda flattered that people think his stuff can be mistaken for Skunk Baxter).  Didn't get a chance to ask him about "Strange World"
*  He's also singing on "Radio" itself, at the very least -- he might have been on other tracks too, but the conversation changed direction before we could get a complete list
*  As mentioned above, Mike gave him "Getcha Back" because he'd written it imagining Dennis on lead (though obviously it was too late for that)
*  Apparently Brian's early arrangements generally gave Dave and Dennis the same part -- neither one of them was a strong singer at first (Dave's voice was still breaking, of course), so Brian liked to double the part
*  Bruce still hasn't heard the finished album.  (He didn't seem in any hurry to -- he referred to it as "a bunt")
*  The album has sold about 150,000 copies
*  Bruce is also very down on the LA Light Album -- he couldn't get why I was praising it, until I let him know I really understood the effort involved, in taking a project that really isn't working and trying to pull it off against the odds
*  OTOH, he loves Smiley Smile, and says it's the trip Smile was meant to be.  Not keen on Brian's studio re-recording, but loved the live performances!
*  He doesn't know whether the re-recorded "She Believes In Love Again" will make it onto the box (and the confusion between 50 Big Ones and the box set continues, BTW -- I don't think the band themselves really know what Capitol is doing with it; and fair enough, they've been a bit busy these past six months).  But if it doesn't "maybe I'll leak it"...
*  Very much not happy with the stereo remixes (even of Pet Sounds).  Apparently the Mark Linett stereo "God Only Knows", the one on "Sounds of Summer", still includes Carl's lead track on the coda which Brian mixed out in favor of doing a second part himself.  (I'm not sure about that, but I was hardly going to contradict him!)
*  He says Australia is "the best country in the world" (we chatted a bit about me moving down here) -- thanks to one of his sons marrying a certain woman in Perth, he may yet rack up some more frequent-flyer miles
*  Apparently he's a die-hard science fiction fan -- that's all he read when he was growing up!

Cheers,
Jon Blum

Good performance by the band but I don't like Scott's voice on it, he's really straining to hit those notes.  I would have preferred if Brian sang it (but in a lower key like he did on the "Imagination" album).

Great information. The professor had long said that Dave is playing Beaches in Mind and in singing on Radio, so I am glad to get a little support on this from the man himself. Baxter is only playing that fuzz-pedal  or wah-wah fills here and there. Now this song ought to be re-done, no, to fill it out with more of "something"? I love rocking out to it (after I write this I'm off to Redondo to play the album in car and ipod while watching the waves), but many consider this a weak cut. What would beef it up?

I can't see BJ calling the album a bunt; he is so enjoying the work and is performing fantastically all over it; perhaps he means that the BB still have a few home runs in them and this was somewhat tentative in what to present and the final track selection, etc.

Lastly, any mention of "the next BB album"?

Great work, Jon, thanks.

He sort of gets lost in the mix a bit when he reaches for the higher falsetto notes "...I'm gonna take you overrrr!" Would've been good if he got backed up by Jeff or something just to beef that section up.

Still though, the guys and the band sound fantastic.  Hope it stays in the set for the remainder of the tour....

Scott T is that close to nailing it; I think he just needs to relax and go with it- Brian's original vocal is passionate and gorgeous, but also confident and almost effortless like so much of Brian's singing from '63 to '67 -  it's a big ask for any singer to ape, let alone when "the guy" is a few metres stage-right from you.

I think Totten is superb on LHRW, which is, BTW, one of the toughest songs to sing in the entire catalogue. I admire him as a musician and think that he has not been given enough credit yet for is amazing job as a band leader.

Nevertheless, I am not a fan of band members singing spotlight leads ln this tour.

thanks Jon. I (fixated and naive) hope that means that Brian wants to write some melodies there and take them back to Mike in LA to write lyrics for for the next album.  With all the compilations coming out, all I care about in new BB music.  Did you have a sense of what BJ meant by a "bunt"? Was I correct in my overly hopeful analysis of it?  I really hope he and all the BB love the album as we do.

FWIW, I thought Scott T's take on "Let Him Run Wild" was more effective for not being a carbon-copy of Brian -- it gave it a certain freshness.  It doesn't have the sort of unearthly perfectness of classic Brian vocals, but it sounded like a real guy really singing rather than a reproduction!

Cheers,
Jon Blum

The Heckler is a column and the content is via reader submitted contributions - with some subbie or staff writer augmentation I would imagine.

Did anybody have the guts to make any mention of the 1978 Australian tour?  ;D

There's a short snippet of it at the end of this interview with the boys (I don't think the interview was posted before):

Wow...I've never seen that clip before. Was it from the Melbourne show?

The Beach Boys "Good Vibrations- From the Myer Music Bowl Melbourne" premiered on Channel 7, May 10, 1978. Not sure if it was a State or National broadcast.

If you look closely, the clothing Carl is wearing in that clip doesn't match what he wore in the circulating Melbourne video. Unless he put on some type of jacket during the show. I've only seen parts of the show, and I've never seen Good Vibrations from the circulating show.

I made a big post a long time ago, and it seems it went amiss.I just wanted  to say the concert/orient double were just awesome and thankyou to those that organised it.

Was great to meet and chat with those members of the band that were there and to collect autographs for my Sloop John B book. Anyway will post this now before I lose this one too...

Thanks for the photos. I was at this show, it was incredible. The band were fantastic and the show was professional from start to finish. Best $AU250 I ever spent on a concert!
