I can contain myself no longer!!! So excited for this gig, The Beach Boys play the Lokerse festival in Belgium on 7th August!

Main act of the night (set time 21.30 - 23.45) and followed by the Austrailian Pink Floyd (!?!).

Tickets at €35. Anyone else going? You'll see me at the front!  ;D

PS on the site-map TOOG means Bar  :-D

That's quite good news, as if they're doing two and a quarter hours starting at 21:30 for a festival, that means I'm less worried about the length of the Italian shows (which start at 21:00 so I thought they might be short).

Yeah as a festival gig I was worried that this might be a shorter set but it's clearly not.

I'm sure all the European dates will be proper length gigs, there's no reason we should get short-changed!

The Australian Pink Floyd (which is a cover band, BTW) starts at 23:45, so there's no way that The Beach Boys are actually going to play for 2:15 hours. More like an hour and a half, I'd say.

I'm going, BTW. Very much looking forward to it. :)

The change over time at a festival like this won't be more than 30 mins so that's at least a 1hr 45 minute set, which I'm more than happy with.

Austrailian Pink Floyd are more than just a cover band though, they're probably the most famous cover band in the world. Their shows are pretty spectacular. It's gonna be a weird way to come off a BB high!  :-D

I don't think they're more famous than The Bootleg Beatles.

Well maybe. Maybe not. Who knows. I haven't done the sums.

Sad thing though is that any time that they have to cut from their regular set, especially at a festival, will probably be at the expense of the "rarities".

Bummer. BW played a full set there in 2004. So why not now?  ??? Still, I'm looking foward to my first ever BB show.  :)

To be honest, I don't care if they leave out a few rarities for this show - I'm going to enjoy every moment of it regardless.

Hey Guy, I missed you!

(sorry, we waren wat later!)

There were some girls on stage during Barbara Ann. I guess relatives from Bruce. The one in the middle with the Mickey Mouse sweater had to be dragged on stage. Pretty cute!

Great show, was surprised by Mike's heavy bass singing. Setlist could have been a lot different, in my opinion. It's not like the crowd went wild upon hearing Hawaii or Don't Back Down, or even Kokomo. Might as well play something of Sunflower or another Pet Sounds-cut. Or Disney Girls, Bruce had almost nothing to do besides making a fool of himself. It's fun to watch him, I have to give him that.

Wow, they really owned the place yesterday. The crowd was relatively young (at least in the front, where I was standing) and very into it. Only downsides for me were the very safe greatest hits setlist (Is it really too much to ask to include at least one or two unexpected "rarities" for the fans who actually do know more than just the hits? OK, there were a couple of album cuts, but with songs like Catch A Wave and You're So Good To Me you're still playing pretty safe. Would have LOVED to hear something like All This Is That or This Whole World) and the fact that Brian looked very bored and tired, he obviously couldn't wait to get the hell out of there. Everyone else seemed to have a blast, though.

(hi Bill / Jop!)

I thought it was a fantastic show. I knew beforehand this would be an ultra short show. Also, this was my second ( and last ) show of the show. In Barcelona I probably was hoping too much for the concert being the best ever, so ended up being slightly disappointed because of that. This time, also closer to home, it was natural to be relaxed and enjoy the show and take it all in. Only 1 hr 40 min, but what a great show. I respectfully disagree with shelter about Brian looking tired. He did look pale and was kinda inactive during the encore, but he was singing good, playing piano everywhere and making gestures (especially when a camera was around). Lots of Brian lead vocals after the car songs.

Perhaps. I really thought he wasn't a shadow of how he was at the four solo concerts that I saw in the last few years.

When he is the Frontman he has to be more into it. With Mike having those duties, Brian can just lay back and play until he's called on to take a lead.

Great to hear !
But I'm sorry for you that they didn't do some rarities. I don't think "All this is that" wold work very well for this setting but "Marcella" or "This whole world" might've done pretty good

Title: Re: Show 62: Lokerse, Belgium 7th August

Exactly!

I don't really care for 'most people/Joe Q. Public want them to play the hits ', but if you go by that strategy and want to play a set that will be interesting for non-fans you shouldn't play a lot of songs that sound a lot like eachother and even cover the same themes lyrically. Mix it up a bit, your back catalog has so many different things, and I think your impact is a lot bigger.

That being said, I thought they really played with a lot of energy and knocked out as many songs as possible. They were like the Ramones!

I will admit that I'm a fool, as long as we both acknowledge the fact that I'm right ;D

Besides, complaining about setlists is a whole lot more rational than most of the speculation on this board about private lives of bandmembers, how Smile '67 would have went and stereo Wild Honey.

Of course you do, but it makes more sense to talk about what you did hear rather than speculate on what you didn't.

Everyone onstage was obviously having a ball and, aside from Kokomo, every song in the set was fantastic. I've stayed clear of watching crappy youtube clips so I can experience this reunion myself. The performances and the harmonies were much better than I could have dreamed of. My standouts were Do It Again, You're So Good To Me, Don't Back Down, Heroes and Villains (wow!!!) and Rock and Roll Music (a great great version). Brian's vocals sounded really good too.

I think it was a brilliant festival all round.

Maybe next year they will do another Box Set tour, like they did in 1993.

The regular shows on this tour have been at least as deep as those of the Box Set Tour. And the delivery is probably better.

To anyone complaining because they did not play their favorite obscure song: how many hardcore catalogue-aware fans attend the shows? 1/2000? 1/2500? Face it, guys, they do US a big favor when theh include deeper cuts. They are entitled to play whatever they want. It is true that going deeper into the catalogue is cool in itself, the group likes it, and can lead to a better appreciation of the group's output. But let's be honest: those twist-dancing crowds of baby boomers.... it takes a lot of nerve to go deeper than the hits (which are great and they perform wonderfully) and sure as hell they have!

First of all, they can play whatever they want. Second, it's not about them playing my favorite obscure song. It's about seeing my favourite band making less of an impact than they could.

You know, I have taken a look at the Dutch and Belgian charts and a lot of the things they play aren't exactly hits. Little Honda, Little Deuce Coupe, Hawaii, Don't Back Down, 409, Shut Down, Surfin Usa, Surfin Safari, Catch a Wave, I Get Around, Sail on Sailor, When I Grow Up never charted in Holland and I'm pretty sure not in Belgium too. Chart information isn't everything of course. What is a hit? A song that charted or a song that has been played on the radio the last 50 years? So yes, Of course I want them to play their signature songs, but form where I was standing people didn't recognize most of the surf and car songs. You can easily cover that part of your carreer by playing Surfin Usa, Surfin Safari + one extra and I Get Around and Little Deuce Coupe+one extra.

Tears in The Morning, I Can Hear Music, Bluebirds over the Mounting were Top 10 hits! You want to please the baby boomers, play one of those. Rock & Roll Music, Do You Wanna Dance and Why Do Fools Fall in Love did what they are supposed to do. Make the people dance. A lot of the early 'hits' didn't. Because they sound a whole lot like the song they played right before. They have Darlin' (charted) and Marcella (charted) in their back pocket. I'm positive their concert would be a lot more balanced if they had played those.

From a different user, another great video...a fun one to watch.  This is the most fun I've seen Brian have with a song on this tour.

Look at Brian have fun on "Sail On Sailor"...he's waving his arms around and the other members are playing along with him, Mike especially:

By the end of the song, nearly the entire band are following Brian's choreography--hilarious!

Hahahaha! I love this! In Tahoe, Jeff followed along with Brian but only Jeff. It's so cute to see the whole band at it.

I would love to know how Brian chooses his choreography. Often he hits his moves a couple words too early but this little number looks more about punctuation than acting out the song.
