Title: Odd, weird, wonderful and disturbing music Part 2!

Since Jay's wonderful thread has been lost to the doldrums of this subforum, I figured it's worth a revival!

The original thread was great. I have you and Jay to thank for introducing me to the delights of Throbbing Gristle (which in turn led me to Psychic TV) and Silver Apples.

I tried a "The Residents" thread before and no one bit, but they really are worth checking out if you like weird and highly original music.

I'm about 7:00 into listening to "Come Out". It's interesting that if you let your mind kind of "wander", it almost starts to sound somewhat musical. I mean, you can make a beat out of it.

Interesting topic.

De La Soul - "Patti Dooke"

If you never listened to them, they kind of did Jazz rap.  They hated ignorant rap that was all about posturing, they just liked making fun music that didn't really mean much.  Very creative, and great production on most of their stuff.  The first guy is "Dave" or "Dove", or "Plug Two" or "Trugoy" (yogurt, spelled backwards).  The second rapper is "Posdynous", or "Pos", or "Plug One" or "Plug one the Wonder" or "Pasta the Lucky".  These guys were incredible.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exdbzs15ebw

I don't completely get them, but I think the whole point was to not take yourself seriously.

De La Soul - Tread Water

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nruVyJmtcqo

Some of the most creative hiphop I've heard.  These guys were WIDELY criticised and ridiculed after they released songs like this on their first album.  All the lyrics are pretty clever but manage to not be too pretentious.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Roger Miller - "My Uncle Used to Love Me But She Died"

At first listen, it's a bunch of nonsense by the genius.... but if you look into his life a little bit, it becomes even more perplexing.  Roger Miller's father died when he was very young, and his mother couldn't support him and his two brothers; so Roger and his two brothers all were split up and went to live with their father's three brothers.  Roger moved to Texas, and hated his uncle so much he ran away from home a dozen times as a child.  His next door neighbor was the guy who wrote "Flying Purple People Eater".... which explains Rogers penchant for strange music.  So, with that bio, what does this song mean?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pH3yYcc0gBc

----------------------------------------------------------------

Merle Kilgore - "Five Card Stud"

The famous Scopitone.  If you're not familiar with them, they were video jukeboxes in airports and bus stations back in the 60's... they shot very strange music videos for them, like this weird-ass song.  Great stuff.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CoH5xKC3xoE

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kokane - "Night Locs".

There's a great rapper named "Kokane" who is the son of one of Motown's songwriters (His father wrote "Just My Imagination").  Really interesting style and crazy ass songs.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyUCRpwOIzs

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Suga Free - "On My Way"

Another crazy rapper, this guy thinkis he's a pimp.  So he does things like grow his fingernails long.  I think it's supposed to show all his women that he's better than them, I don't get it.  I don't think he's homosexual, it's a 'pimp' thing.  Pretty good rapper, just very, very weird.  Anyways, weird music thread: Suga Free is relevant.

... and I could go on and on

This one deserved it's own post, because the guy is so brilliant.

Chris Smither - "Leave the Light On"

Do yourself a favor, if you don't listen to any of my other links, click this one, you won't regret it.  Genius doesn't say enough.

There is a recording that would be great for this thread, unfortunately I have only a vague memory of it. My dad played it for me once when I was real young, when we were going through his old records and playing them. I think it was done by Alice Cooper. But I've looked through the lyrics to a lot of his songs and I can't find it. It starts off with a drumbeat, I think. It was like a "marching band" beat. It was about somebody that was about to be hanged I remember that there was narration leading up to the execution. I remember the line "What have I done to deserve such a fate?" being spoken. I only remember it because John Lennon sang that exact line in "I'm A Loser". Does anybody know of the recording that I'm talking about? I haven't heard it in probably close to twenty years now. I remember that it terrified me, and that was the one and only time my dad played it.  ;D

I thought I'd give this thread one more try before letting it die out like my other thread. This time, I'm looking for song "suites". Songs that go through different melodies and lyrics, or "sections", without going into another song or album indexed "track". Did that make sense? Something like "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes", I guess. One of my all time favorites in this "genre" is the full length version of "The Legend of Crazy Horse" by J.D. Blackfoot. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Xh5GUkK0u4&playnext_from=TL&videos=NzxFHFMtPfk

In 1979 the keyboard player from Mott The Hoople made an album in his bedroom called Hybrid Kids where he pretended to be a bunch of different groups covering a song in the style of another artist eg Brotherhood of Man's "Save All Your Kisses For Me" in the style of Devo, or The Stranglers "Something better Change" in the style of The Residents. It's one of the weirdest, funniest things I have ever heard. I imagine The Real Beach Boy is aware of it.

This is one of my favorite bands ever, Sabbath Assembly.  I think they will fit nicely in this thread considering they play the original hymns of a 60's apocalyptic cult.  Check out both of their albums on bandcamp:

The new one features Genesis P-Orridge for you Throbbing Gristle/Psychic TV fans.  This article gives a decent overview of the band and The Process Church of Final Judgement that they take their inspiration from: http://www.letoilemagazine.com/2012/10/30/we-will-rock-you-happy-halloween-heres-some-freaky-cult-music-for-you/

Wouldn't necessarily say this video of Scott Walker's new song "Epizootics" is -est where the subject heading's four adjectives go, but in the places where the oddness etc of the music goes down a notch or two, the visuals ratchet it up to compensate.

This is so totally weird. It's Cara Stewart straightfacedly crooning the outrageous "Song Of The Burmese Land", written by one L. Hazelwood; not Lee Hazelwood, who categorically denies authorship----and who can blame him?  ;D

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTlbrr49G-A (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTlbrr49G-A)

"Burmese Land is like monkeyland
A bothersome, troublesome place
Burmese Land is like monkeyland
Listen, I'll tell you so

"The AFPFL* government told the people
When 10 o'clock strikes night
Don't make a noise, don't be a nuisance
Let the people sleep

"If a permit you should get
You can make a noise
If anyone asks, you can say
A permit we have got

"Always at this feast, always at that feast
Chinese, Burmese, Indian
Doon doon doon dang dang dang
Boom boom boom bang bang bang
A permit we have got

"Burmese Land is like monkeyland
A bothersome, troublesome place
Burmese Land is like monkeyland
To the lunatic asylum I'm going"  :lol

Oh my goodness. There are so many artists I don't know! I wish I had more time to listen to everything everyone links here. Every day i see a new name either on this board or on YouTube. There's so much more to discover...

This, I guess, falls under "odd"... this band called Moon Hooch. I saw them at a music festival and they had so much energy! So fun to see them. I had not heard of them until we randomly came up on their stage.
It's all instruments but it almost sounds like weird jazz-edm-rock-dance music. Check out their Tiny Desk performance here.

I had to resurrect this thread to post this. "Stormy Weather" by The Five Sharps. This is one of the rarest records on earth, with only possibly less than 5 original copies surviving.  The recording as it exists today is a copy that was "mastered" in 1972 from and original that ended up getting broken. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ooU8o78lMgw

Here's an article that is pretty thoroughly in telling the story behind the recording. This might actually be the rarest record in the world. http://www.uncamarvy.com/5Sharps/5sharps.html

I was reading the wiki page on scratching (I love scratching!), which led me to turntablism and then on to this gent. According to the uploader, "Record Without A Cover is the debut album by visual, Fluxus and conceptual artist Christian Marclay (Recycled Records, 1985). Oddly different from anything else, it is literally a record with no sleeve to keep it safe. All the scratches and mauled grooves over Duke Ellington's 'Caravan' are intentional and unique for every copy."

This is a famous recording that Charlie Parker did in 1946. He was dope sick and tried to compensate for it by drinking a quart of whiskey. He was so drunk that the producer literally had to hold him up as he played. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNJpes0XFGU

Poor Bird! Reminds me of the session when P.J. Proby recorded "Somewhere". Everyone took this record seriously when it came out in 1964. I thought it was hilarious. Turns out P.J. sang it lying on the studio floor, because lying on the floor came easier to him at that moment than standing up. :lol
