Title: The * Appreciation Thread
Post by: Charles LePage @ ComicList on April 10, 2006, 10:41:14 AM
I'm tired.  I'm tired of the fighting.  I'm tired of the long distance insults and snipes.  I'm tired of spite dressed up with cleverness.  My spirit and my health can't take it anymore.  I say it's time for some honest and sincere appreciation and thanks.  I say it's time to take the following commandment seriously:

"Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you. And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not to take thy coat also. Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again. And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise."

Let's show some appreciation, not just for enemies, but for allies as well.  Let's say out-loud, for everyone to see, 'thanks, good job, we appreciate it.'

I'll go first.  I think Jon and John have done a great job at the Smile Shop.  It's informative, it's fun, and it looks good.  I'm glad the Smile Shop community has an excellent place to hang out together.

I think Ian could be a force for good so much more often than he is. The end.

I appreciate that the moderators here, especially amosario, put up with my crap, and tell me when I cross the line.

Can we Puh -leaaazzeeee argue over the fact that you quoted the KJV?  ;D

No, I like everyone about the same; we are all assholes, saints and scholars.

That also makes me two faced.

Can we Puh -leaaazzeeee argue over the fact that you quoted the KJV?  ;D

No, but I will say this:

I know and believe, as a former Catholic, there are fundamental theological and dogmatic differences between the Catholic Church and what some call "evangelical" churches.  I suppose the church I go to might be considered that.  We are independent Baptists.  However, not everyone calling themselves Catholic is not saved, and not everyone calling themselves a Baptist is saved.  I have no personal issues with anyone who is Catholic.  I'd like to think I could tell a Catholic I think they are wrong about something, and they could do the same with me, and we could still get along.  I certainly did that on the Shut Down board.

I'm all about the King James, myself, because that's what i grew up with [Episcopal church] and when the whole rest of the ecumenical world made the switch to some newfangled translation, i stayed behind.  I prefer the elegance of the language in the KJV, and the fact that, like Shakespeare, you have to work at it.

I appreciate Charles for having helped me get my board up and running.  Twice.  I appreciate the current mods here; you're doing a fine job.

I appreciate meatloaf sandwiches for breakfast.

Susan, I think you are fine example, the finest I can think of in the BB online world, of what a message board moderator should be and can be.

Er, that's not to diminish the moderators here; they are equally wonderful.  I've driven them equally mad.  You've put up with me longer, though.

I appreciate Sebastian because he doesn't give a f***. I know all this talk of 'but our words DO matter on the internet because it's real people' and all that jazz, but it's sad to me that the internet has become the social eqivalent of High School. It's a big reason I'm not around much anymore. I mean no disrespect to anyone, and I'm sure Sebastian doesn't either, but some people just make it way to easy. If you feel differently, that's fine. I don't look down on people for what they do with there time, I just won't subscribe to that life and I'll be vocal about it and not give a f***.

Al Pacino said it best as Ricky Roma in Glengarry GlenRoss: "All train compartments smell vaguely of sh*t. It gets so you don't mind it. That's the worst thing that I can confess. You know how long it took me to get there? A long time. When you die you're going to regret the things you don't do. You think you're queer? I'm going to tell you something: we're all queer. You think you're a thief? So what? You get befuddled by a middle-class morality? Get shut of it. Shut it out. You cheat on your wife? You did it, live with it. You f*** little girls, so be it. There's an absolute morality? Maybe. And then what? If you think there is, go ahead, be that thing. Bad people go to hell? I don't think so. If you think that, act that way. A hell exists on earth? Yes. I won't live in it. That's me."

I appreciate many who have come, and many who have gone from these parts.

I miss the girls.  They gave this place that certain touch that countered the macho posturing and provided a more socialized, less competitive feel.

Competitive? I don't remember anything of the sort throughout my first couple of years browsing the Shop. Spirited debate? Most definately. That's what made this place so damn awesome back in the day. There were so many ideas & theories being thrown around by so many, but everyone knew it was all toward the same goal. It didn't matter WHO had the best thought, but the thought itself is what mattered. Then you could take what someone else had started, and everyone else would try to expand on that towards 'an answer' of sorts. It was truly a thing to behold. It sucks that everyone who came later couldn't have experienced it.

When all the off topic stuff started going down, the wheels began to fall off. Times changed, SMiLE was 'finished,' new people came, and a good number of the old ones left. Meaning this: No one is to blame for anything. There's no fingers to point for the 'downfall' or the 'rising.' Times just changed. That's just my opinion though. I was never here to socialize, I was here to learn. And what an education it was. I'm not one to live in the past, but I'm definately one to move on. I just enjoy coming back to see what's up every once in awhile. That and having Sebs back around brought me back out a little more. It's good to have that man around.

Hell, Sebastian was really the first dude I 'socialized' with on the SMiLE shop back in the day.
