The only venue I've seen that could compare with these sightlines might be the Gorge Amphitheater in Eastern Washington. Could you imagine if they performed Cabinessence with a landscape like this? Wow.

I've been to Red Rocks and its tough for anyone to make the trek to the seats.  A great great beautiful venue.  I hope  the Boys adjust to the thin air.  A perfect place for them to perform Country Air!!!

Saw a tweet saying they did 52 songs tonight ... damn.

Also, a lot of reports of a great deal of weed being smoked in the audience.

Great show tonight.  I'm totally wiped and have no set list, but I can tell you they didn't play Marcella or Our Prayer, but they played Good Timin', Darlin', This Whole World, Add Some Music, Do You Wanna Dance, Betsy, and Kiss Me Baby (of the songs that tend to be on and off).  They also played a song I didn't know (not unsurprising since I still need to listen to Holland, KTSA, and '85), but it still surprised me that I didn't know it.  Brian was really engaged tonight and was very much more vocal than I expected.

No, I knew Getcha Back and they did it really well.

Now that I think about it, maybe it was It's OK.  I don't remember much of the lyrics except hearing "Summertime" a bunch.   I bet that was it.

Another documentary mention.  A pretty cool shot of Bruce no cameras around the stage or in the crowd.  I suppose this documentary will capture a few live scenes but it will mostly be an interview and behind the scenes document of the tour.  Hopefully a great bonus feature to accentuate the main feature on the live DVD.

Between them and the twistin' baby boomers, the video editors will have a tough time coming up with good audience shots.

I'm not registered with setlist.fm, but I can say that Forever was right before God Only Knows, and Don't Worry Baby (I think) was right after Darlin'.    The song I think was It's Okay was played in the first set, but I'll be damned if I can remember where.

Edit: Also, the venue played a mix of music on the speakers before the show and during intermission.  They played Be My Baby by the Ronettes right about 5 minutes before the concert started and then again during intermission.  It was great.

I might not get the sarcasm but it's common nowadays to have an electric piano inside of the body of a "real" one. Just lookes nicer but at the same time is better for mixing

Thanks for the pics !

I agree, this could be my favorite set list of the tour so far.  Cottonfields, It's Ok , This Whole World back in.  Still Crusin' out. Interesting DYWD in the encore. Maybe they wanted to give Brian something to sing in the encore.

Brian does a really great, powerful lead vocal on that one. I think it works as one of the last songs.

I don't like the way they now set up around the piano for ASM.  I assume it's a camera angle thing for filming, but it just doesn't work in terms of showing them as a group when viewed straight on.  Though it does make Brian look like the star, since the other guys are farther away from him and he's in the center.   Which I suppose might also be the idea.

That's what I said.  It doesn't give you that "awww" moment when they stand all around the piano.  If it was for the cameras, I'm not sure how less emotive a shot would have been to have it done the other way...

This was shot fairly close to where I was sitting. There were quite a few college-age and early-20s people in this area. They loved the Pet Sounds songs the best and really loved Heroes and Villains also.

I bought the soundcheck package both for this show and the show in Dallas, which was only the 2nd show of the tour.  They were great then but are much better now.  Brian at times sounds nearly as good as he did in his 20's.  He was very animated during the show, probably due to coaching he got from the film crew. Mike's voice has improved as well, singing more on pitch and having an even better time on stage.   The first half dragged at bit as there was a little rain. The second half was a party atmosphere, with the crowd up and singing and dancing to almost every song.   The band is not only tighter but are really enjoying themselves more.

The soundcheck was a hoot as it was in Dallas. The Dallas soundcheck was more of a rehearsal, and there seemed to be nervousness and tension within the group. I posted before how Melinda Wilson was pacing the aisles in Dallas and yelled "thank you" when I shouted by approval that the ending of Sail On Sailor should be done Brian's way as suggested by Darian. She was at the Red Rocks soundcheck too, but just watching and relaxing.  For the show, she sat in the row in front of me with her little boy (who, although adopted, looks a lot like Brian!).  She left in the first half when it started raining but returned for the second half.   Brian acknowledged them during the show, "my family is here, my wife Melinda."  The Red Rocks soundcheck was very relaxed but very well performed, testing the principals' mics with "Wendy", "Getcha Back", "Cottonfields", "It's OK", "Please Let Me Wonder", and "Heroes and Villains".  Brian sounded wonderful - he's actually gotten better as the tour has gone on.  After "Getcha Back", I yelled, "Bruce you sound great!", and he smiled and replied, "I just sing, Brian's the guy who writes it!"   Here was an interesting exchange after "Cottonfields":

Me: Al, you sound great!
Al: I sound what?
Me: You sound great!
Al: Oh, thanks. It's a little early for great, (laughter) but thanks, I appreciate it. You should probably tell that to Love.
Brian: Hey, how about, could we do 'It's OK?'
Mike: Yeah, OK, it's OK.  Say, Brian, how about you do the music, and I do the words like usual? (laughter)

By the way, I also asked Bruce if he posts on this board, and he reply was "No, I don't post anywhere."  Sorry Kittykat, you're not Bruce.

With all I've read here and elsewhere, and all I've seen and heard since experiencing The Beach Boys live for the first time at Carnegie Hall in 1971 (and some twenty times after throughout the years) and seeing Brian and Band half a dozen times (plus a week of rehearsals for the Smile live DVD), I was simply unprepared for how magnificent and...utterly joyous...the sound they made was last night, high in the mountain air...I was moved in ways I never thought possible again for this group and their place in my life, and it all felt like coming full circle. I was in the 8th row center - perfect seats in this glorious venue - (and, mind you, this was after sitting in the front row for the soundcheck, which was like having them for a private screening in my living room). One of the most perfect evenings of music in my life, with such loving, exacting and powerful renditions of every song. The combination of forces from joining the two bands together (behind Cowsill's STRONG power playing throughout) and Brian's new lease on performing life (particularly his complete engagement with his singing, especially in the second half) gave these songs PERFECT live readings, with a well paced and nicely balanced setiist. You could not have asked for more from this 3.5 gig covering every facet of their incredible career. They were clearly inspired by the venue, and made several references to it throughout the night.

A celebration was had by all.

I am deliriously happy - and at peace with my love for this group.

Thanks for posting the pictures, PS.  The cell phone lights during In My Room against the backdrop of the Red Rocks was an incredibly moving experience. I was sitting right in front of you in row 7. It was indeed an unforgettable evening.

"Do You Wanna Dance" worked as an encore at this show.  By the time we got to the encore, everybody was up and dancing.  In some ways, an outdoor venue like this can be distracting (brief light rain in the first half, people talking during the deep album cuts in the first half), but it also promotes a party atmosphere.  This was a special set list for a special show at a special venue.

I would not be surprised to see a lot of material from this concert on the new documentary.  Other artists from John Tesh to Dave Matthews had hit live concert videos from this venue.  The film crew was interviewing people who bought the VIP packages between the soundcheck and the show.  Some of the questions were, "what is it like to see the Beach Boys at a beautiful historic venue like Red Rocks?", and "If you were talking to Brian Wilson right now, what would you say?"   I was in line to get interviewed and signed a waiver, but they let the crowd in early (6:00 pm rather than 6:30), so they had to stop.

I was in line, right behind you, AlFall, the last one to sign the waiver. The man who is producing the doc, David Levy, is an old high school buddy from Spring Valley, NY,, so I may have a chance to do something about it. He also produced the PBS show.

I was fully prepared for assholes yelling out drunken requests or singing along with quiet songs to show everyone nearby they know the lyrics too (which has ruined the last several concerts I've been to, including Brian's solo gigs), but no one did ---- the pacing of the show was perfect, with a little "art" segment at the beginning of the second set. Brian was so STRONG, singing with inflection and intonation, not just laboring or yelling - Heroes, This Whole World, Add Some, Sail on Sailor, Please Let Me Wonder and Kiss Me Baby rocked my world, and God Only Knows rained on my glasses with tears... There was something for everybody at this one, with hit after hit, great song after great song. I remember all those Beach Boy concerts in the 70's where they would constantly be tuning or jiving between songs, with no sense of pacing. Even Mike's banter was just right, giving a nod to the school where I profess about film (making a joke about "English Professors here tonight from Boulder..."), only hinting at his assumed reactionary attitude toward the People's Republic of Boulder...They also mentioned that this is where Carl lived for many years.

I've never experienced such wall to wall joy -- with no filler -- for 3.5 hours (well, perhaps Bruce of 78...).

I could not ask for anything more from these men.

Something I noticed was that Brian hit all his falsetto notes on Please Let Me Wonder (except one phrase where he dropped into a lower register).  Jeff doubled him on the notes, but they were definitely in unison.  I welled up hearing them do that song.  Same for I just wasn't made for these times.  I actually did have tears for God Only Knows, and I was totally not expecting to having seen so many clips of the tributes from other shows.  It was truly an emotional night.  That venue is so magical too.  We are really spoiled by it here in Colorado.

Completely agree with the both of you. What a delightful evening -- maybe Red Rocks just got them inspired that night, but it was one of the best concerts I've ever seen.

Exactly right, Elreannach - Jeff was NOT really needed and was, in fact, sonically redundant during those moments. I was worried because Brian's vocals were (understandably) a bit subdued during the soundcheck of Please Let Me Wonder, but he was completely in the moment of singing (when you watched the video projection, with a front view of Bri, you could see that he was really into it). IJWMFTT was so much stronger than the Pet Sounds Tour version, where he constantly struggled for the notes (not having to sing the lead on every song must surely help). From my vantage point, Brian also looked like he was really playing the piano, very intently and with full concentration, for just about every tune before he picked up the bass. BTW, California Girls was paced just al little bit slower and more deliberate than in the past - it meant something to me again. California Saga and Cotton Fields were great rave-ups and it was tremendous fun to sing along with Al, as his voice just cuts through like no one else I know. I do think the venue clearly inspired all of them to sing with passion and intensity of purpose. I was dreaming of what a Linett 5.1 mix of this show from the board might sound like...

For me, watching the film of Carl in his green rayon jacket singing in the night air brought back so many beautiful memories of the summer nights that I saw him when I was young and deeply in love (with my Caroline, No...), so i was tearing up a little for both of us, as I too suffer from a serious lung condition and think of Carl as someone who knows about the struggle to simply breathe (I needed 02 up there)...and, of course, the bittersweet pathos of Brian being the last Wilson standing. We were asked, in a way, to imagine Carl and Dennis being introduced by Jeff, wondering where their mics would have been placed on the stage, etc.

One further comment:

I am a filmmaker and a Professor of Film Studies (at CU Boulder) and I am usually nauseated by "meaningless montages of empty signifiers" in concert and music video projections, but I thought almost ALL of the projections and graphics were very well done, appropriate to the mood of each song, sometimes revealing (the newly discovered studio footage, as seen on PBS, filmed during the GV sessions, the album covers, the bio snapshots/high school yearbook pix, coupled with the inevtiable generic beach scenes and familiar promos) and, in fact , very tasteful and made by someone who understands sound/image relationships and also cares deeply for the context of the music. Each time I looked at the screen, I was delighted. That NEVER happens...They somehow managed to do everything right on this one.

Agree about the onscreen visuals.  Funny enough, I was nearly hypnotized by the James Bond-esque silhouetted dancing girls during Do You Wanna Dance.  :lol

Man I love the unpredictability of this performance. That's an artist at work: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwH596dPht8

During some moments in the 2nd verse he's REALLY getting close to his classic tone

I hope those are your friends in that picture and they didn't just shove you in with random guys to save time! This is the first picture I've seen with four people in it.

A friend since childhood flew in from FLA, another childhood friend from the block flew in from LA (his law firm is partly representing the Tour, hence the VIP access), and I took my young teaching assistant who loves the group.

So yes, it's a group portrait of us. But they did rush us in and out so fast that i didn't really have time to say my thank you's to them, and I regret it now. I mentioned to Brian a mutual friend of ours, hoping for a glint of recognition, but he just said an auto "thank you" and Mike looked puzzled...

My one chance to thank all of them for a lifetime of music...and I blew it. Oh well. They hear it a lot...there is just no way to really do it like you dreamed it.

Just remembered that I coughed during the bridge of Wendy.  I don't think anyone around me got it. :(

Please be comforted: I think they understood; I'll bet your face showed your heart and gratitude. They knew. Please relieve yourself of the self incrimination.  They knew.
