I'll be on the lawn with the wife and kids for this one. A different experience from the Mohegan Sun show, to be sure. But the only way to do it with four-year-old in tow.

I'm going. I saw them at the Beacon up close, now to see them at PNC in the $25 lawn section!

I grew up in that area...in the 70s and 80s, the Beach Boys concerts were some of the biggest dates on the Arts Center's calendar.  I saw the BBs there twice, and Brian for the Pet Sounds, Paul Simon, and Smile tours.  Even though the prices have gone up and there are more rules than ever before, it's still a beautiful venue.  Enjoy!

This is close to New York, right?
Caught them in Bethlehem and Camden but I think this much farther out than those, and plus, I don't have any more money to blow!
Enjoy guys.

it's about an hour south of New York. from the Philly area it would be about 2 hours away.

I'll be there in the 302 section. Not bad seats. I went to so many of their PNC shows back in the 80's and 90's when it was the Garden State Arts Center. Was at the show when Blondie Chaplan came out and sang Sail On Sailor(awesome!), and for Carl's last show in '97. Also saw them in AC this trip, I have never seen or heard them better....not surpising as the back up guys are truly terrific and do a great job supporting the main guys, who all do a great job in their own right. Reallly looking forward to Wednesday night!

Ah, memories! Construction contractors of A Certain Dubious NJ Type With Intimidating Friends used to hand out first, second row tix to Garden State Arts Center shows in the 80s among other goodies to exert influence on who got what gigs at my father's workplace...  so my introduction to the boys were the 80s shows there from ridiculously wonderful seats courtesy of those um, dubious elements.

Thanks, organized crime!

That's about right! I was of course, fascinated and my Godfather II-drenched brain would try to get more details out of my father, who would say stuff like "They'd hand out vouchers for free dinners at the best NYC restaurants, and sometimes offer money... but we never take the money, because then they'd own you."

Ulp! Well, ok then. I guess primo Beach Boys tix = not owning you quite as much.

As I recall, they also gave out tix for Frankie Valli and John Denver. My dad insisted we flee the Denver concert after they  played "Home Grown Tomatoes." He stood up, muttered "this is bullshit, let's beat the traffic!" and we were off.

I may be thousands of miles away now, but my dad sure is going to this show! I assured him it wasn't bullshit.

Good. There were too many introductory songs for the second set. Pet Sounds, ASM, Prayer -- all of them work perfectly well on their own, but having them as a sequence is like reading three first chapters in a row.

What needs to happen is that Prayer -> H&V should be moved deeper into the second set, perhaps after the PS material.

Earlier in the tour that's exactly where H&V was placed - it worked really well there.

Couldn't agree more. Thought the second set started very lagging last night for this very reason. Too much sitting in the audience to start out the set.

I guess I see that. The second set doesn't open with a bang, but more of a slow burn. Still, since I love those songs at the beginning of set 2 so much, I didn't mind at all.

I gotta say, I'm completely gobsmacked that at this point they're introducing a new song or two like every third show. It shows that they're not phoning it in, cause this means they're having to rehearse pretty much every day in order to keep learning new stuff. At this point we've had, what, maybe 60 songs over the span of this tour? Unbelievable.

Amazing show, Brian sounded perfect and no autotune at all!

Bruce sang Disney Girls and got a welcome birthday reception from the crowd.

Come Go With Me was played for I believe the first time on the tour and Al was killing it (in a good way).

David Marks got his moment playing Pet Sounds solo with just the backing band to kick off the second half.

Brian nailed his leads tonight.  He was even hitting some high notes!!!

The tributes for Dennis and Carl were very well done, better than I expected.

My only complaint, I got there a little bit late.  What songs did they play before Surfin' Safari?

Just a note - at the Pittsburgh show (5/11), Mike and Al were discussing how Pittsburgh was the birthplace of Doo Wop. Al began singing the beginning of Come Go With Me, and the band jumped right in - playing for about 30 seconds. I have no idea if they had already rehearsed it, but those 30 seconds sure sounded pretty solid. Maybe they've had it in their hip pocket for awhile.

Great show. Unfortunately I ended the night getting home at midnight to find that I was locked out of my apartment and waiting 2 hours for a locksmith. My brain is already asleep and I can't remember a lot of the details just now. I just know that I had a great time. The PNC Center, though...We were in "parking lot 9" and had to walk about 1/2 mile to the venue. We were then told to go to the far left to get to our section, only to find that it was stage right. We missed the first several songs, and so did a lot of other people because it took so long to get to our seats and the band starts right on time!

Anyway, a couple of impressions:
--They have incredible energy
--Brian complained about the beach balls and asked everyone to stop tossing them because it made it hard to see. The audience jokingly booed, thinking Brian was joking, I guess. Mike just said, "I don't know what to say about that!" Then he told everyone to stop playing with their balls.  I don't get Brian's thing with beach balls.
--The videos and photos they use on the screen are very effective. Brian in the studio (video), Dennis/Carl tributes (with video), the Boys' high school yearbook photos... My 75-year-old father got a kick out of the photos of old cars.
--Brian looked and sounded good. He was off-key a couple of times, but he hit some really high notes, particularly during IJWMFTT.
--Speaking of high notes...Bruce. You have no right to have that range at your age! Al sounded great too.
--I loved how they divided the leads. David sang one and Al sang a few, and Bruce. Everyone was given a chance to shine.
--If I heard correctly, there was one moment after Al's first lead where Brian said, "The great Alan Jardine!" and Al turned to Brian and said "No one here is greater than you," or something like that.
--Every one of them (except Brian) was grinning ear to ear at some point during the show. It was great to see.
--The Pet Sounds set got a huge, huge reception. The applause went on and on. They just stood there proudly and waited for it to quiet down.

I was a little pissed off that the beach balls kept going after Brian asked everyone to stop.  I think they are annoying and one came very close to hitting me in the face at one point.  I almost considered grabbing it and deflating it.  But I was enjoying the show, I didn't let the beach balls ruin it, but they were definitely distracting.

They did play Good Timin'!  Brian sang Carl's parts, sounded excellent.  :)

And PNC really needs a better parking system.  If the parking were more organized, my dad and I would have gotten to the stage in time to see the show start.  We got there much earlier than you did but we still missed a few songs.  But I suppose the fact that they played almost (or over) three hours should make up for it.  It's still one of the greatest concerts I've ever been to.

The traffic off the parkway getting in was horrible, too. If all went according to plan, we would've gotten there at 7, but I don't think I got into the venue until it was almost 8.

The understatement of the century!  Leaving the venue was bad enough.  Brand "appearing" merchandise was being sold to the concert goers, unchecked by any in authority.  Guys with armloads of bargain t-shirts approached cars offering a deal.

Then, traffic was vexiciously re-routed to force concertgoers, unfamiliar with the local roads, on and off the Garden State Parkway, in what appeared to me to be a means of collecting additional tolls.  There was no obvious construction going on, and no apparent safety reason.

I've been to a couple of shows at the PNC (one was Brian), and I don't remember this much disorganization before. I think part of it was the huge crowd. But the PNC should have a system for handling it, you're right. There were barely even any signs to tell you where to go. Amazing, I didn't even hear anyone complaining. Getting out of the parking lot was like herding cattle, and I didn't hear any beeping horns or general temper-flaring.

Great show last night; Brian, and everyone, in strong voice. Best I've ever heard Brian, loud, clear and crisp. Pretty funny with the Beach Balls thing too. Al, as always, strong. My wife said, he sounds like he's still in his teens....so clear and strong on his vocals. Same with Bruce; great version of Disney Girls. And Mike too. Carl and Dennis tributes were really cool.......wonderful song selection, including Good Timin lead by Brian and Al's Come Go With Me, which he of course rules! I saw them in AC  a few weeks ago and they were great there too, this was my first time seeing them in this venue since Carl's last show in August of 97, right here. If this is the last time I see them perform, I'm very happy......this was a show to remember, one for the ages. Thanks guys!

Brian sang "Good Timin', did many leads, including This Whole World, H&V, GV, first verse of Sloop John B, and joined in on Mike's "All This Is That."  Bruce got a lot of love for "Disney Girls"; Mike wisecracked that Bruce was a Grammy-winning songwriter, then Mike checked his watch and added: "Sadly, time does not permit us to hear I Write The Songs..."

At the start, when Brian barked about the bouncing beach balls, Mike said: "I think Mr. Wilson wants you all to stop playing with your balls. --- Beach balls!"

Brian fluffed the beginning of "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times", though that may have been a bad stage mix, and I am guessing only recently added; I wasn't sure what key it was in either until halfway through the first verse, by which point Brian was on track.

Some nice words for David Marks:  He is not the most dynamic stage presence, but he deftly (and seemingly effortlessly) handled EVERY guitar lead thrown at him, and began the second set with just him and Brian's rhythm section doing "Pet Sounds," with David's guitar appropriately "Leslie'd."   David played all the "signature" guitar parts on things like Help Me Rhonda, Surfin USA, and I Get Around.

Yeah crowd/parking control was definitely inferior to when we saw Brian do his Smile tour there in 2005.   At least some folks in the crowd appreciated the more "deep catalog" items.

Want to add my notes.  I tried to make a setlist, but I can't for the life of me remember what order the songs were in, which is of course the whole point of a setlist at this point, since we all know the additions.  But the order was changed around significantly from the Boston set list.  California Saga was late in the first set, but Cotton Fields was moved up, rather than playing them back to back.  Why Do Fools Fall in Love directly followed Come Go with Me, which strikes me as a weird choice.  Come Go With Me sounded great, but one doo wop cover is enough, they should have dropped Fools and left in something like Marcella.  But with great versions of Good Timin followed directly by This Whole World, I can't complain!!!

the traffic and parking, as noted, was a nightmare.  I just made it into the arena in time for Good Timin (thank God) but didn't really get to enjoy it because I was looking for a place on the lawn.  I think that the PNC Bank Arts Center just isn't used to have both the arena and the lawn totally full of people.  This was a really big crow (and very enthusiastic!).

Bruce sang Wendy, which was nice because it had been taken out of the setlist for the shows I saw in New York a month ago, so I was glad I got to hear it!

Brian was really engaged - it was hard to see from the lawn when the screen wasn't on him, but you could hear him in the harmonies.  Also, from time to time Brian would improvise a vocal line, which was really cool, because in that band really only Brian has the guts and skills to do that, the harmonies are so tight.  But for example, in Disney Girls there was one part where Brian just did this really cool spontaneous backing vocal line that isn't on the record and that I hadn't heard live before.  You could kind of tell that Bruce was paying attention to how involved Brian was in Disney Girls last night, I really hope that one ends up on youtube!  And a number of his comments, such as the camera man conversation mentioned above, were clearly spontaneous.  His leads were not always pitch-perfect, but he sounded great and was definitely having a good day!

The backing vocals in Add Some Music were changed around in one part, which was really cool.  Different from both the record and the earlier dates on the tour.  Did anyone else notice this?  Is it a new development?  They were distinctly different.

Isn't it Time sounded great, That's Why God Made the Radio never quite pulled together - that's gotta be one tough song to pull off live, although they nailed it in NY a month ago.

Pet sounds (the song) is an awesome addition.  The band totally rocks, Dave is so cool, and it gives everyone time to be back in their seats and ready for add some music, which was a problem at earlier shows.  Speaking of Dave, he totally rocked Sail on Sailor.  Man he was smokin!  He flubbed a few solos, notably do you wanna dance, but it's so cool to have him actually putting his all into doing something new with every guitar solo that its more than worth it.  That's the price you pay for not having some hired gun, and man is it worth it.

The love this audience had for wouldn't it be nice was astounding.  I've never in my life seen a song in the middle of a concert just get waves and waves of applause and a standing ovation.  Mike just stood back and took it all in.

Overall, the energy was incredible.

A final note: on the way out I overheard some middle aged guy comment: "it's hardly good music, but it sure is fun."
Just goes to show that you can literally force some of these people to listen to some of the most beautiful, sophisticated music in the Western canon, and the blinders are on so tight that they still can't see past barbara ann. I don't mind, I just feel bad for em.

Overall, a great show!

I somehow hope the live album/dvd will be some kind of best of the tour, including all the different songs they played packed together! Good Timin', Marcella, Darlin', Come Go With Me, Pet Sounds, Our Prayer, Wendy, Getcha Back etc..

OK, so Marcella and Our Prayer were out.  Darlin' still out. Pet Sounds, Getcha Back and Wendy still in.  This Whole World back in. Good Timin' and Come Go With Me in. Seems every night right now is kind of a guessing game, but looks like we are bound to at least a few of these gems in there.  Sure would like to get Our Prayer, though...

They have been doing "Come Go With Me" during a couple soundchecks and always treated it as something exclusive "just for the soundcheck people"...but it looks like they've added it to the set now which is great.

Wow...that's fantastic. Best sounding Add Some Music of the tour - a couple flubs but SO MUCH soul. I wish Brian could be like that every night.

Someone above wrote Brian sang the first verse of Sloop...did Al sing the last verse? Brian had been doing the whole thing. If so, between that and Come Go With Me someone finally got the message more than halfway through the tour that Al needed more leads!

What was Brian's cameraman comment? I heard him say "Cameraman" and then saw him smile, but I missed something. What happened?

Maybe whenever the camera's on him he's supposed to smile, and he's alerted via teleprompter, so maybe he accidentally said "Cameraman" when it popped up on his teleprompter.

I had pointed out that Brian started Sloop John B - which surprised me - and Brian started the last verse too  - but yes Al came in toward the end and finished it with him.  Al got his leads, esp. Cotton Fields, Rhonda, with Mike on All This Is That.

The love this audience had for wouldn't it be nice was astounding.  I've never in my life seen a song in the middle of a concert just get waves and waves of applause and a standing ovation.  Mike just stood back and took it all in.

Overall, the energy was incredible.

Yes! I was at this show and it was amazing energy and it seemed so spontaneous for the standing O after "Wouldnt it Be Nice"  - So awesome!  I dont know if that happened at previous shows but it seemed that Mike was really taken aback by it all has he tried a couple of times to introduce the next song but the audience would not sit down and stop cheering.  One of thee best moments of the entire show.  I hope somebody has video of it!!

Couple of other observations Brian was feelin it, as other ppl said he was singing a lot and also directing the band through hand motions from his piano, very cool to see.  I was a little bummed that "Marcella" and "Our Prayer" didnt make it on the set but "Good Timin" was cool and "Come Go With Me" wasnt bad but I woulda preferred "Marcella" or "Our Prayer".  But hey got "This Whole World".

Great mixture of fans young and old, I talked to one fan while tailgating before the show who saw them while he was stationed in Pearl Harbor, HI in 1963 and yes it was packed.  I saw The Who back in 06' at PNC at it wasnt that packed, guess the Beach Boys grab more the casual music fans than The Who does.

Sorry if this was mentioned before, but it looks like they got rid of those circular platforms for Brian and Bruce to sit on. Is that new? I was afraid Brian might fall trying to get on and off of those.

Just seen the vid as posted below/above ( montage ) and yep the reaction to WIBN is rather superb , so much so that Mike really ( for once ) is lost for words - Great great bit of film  ;D

You know...now that I think about it, they got rid of those a while ago and I think they may have done it because having Brian on that riser prevented people from seeing his face if you sat on the other side of him.  All you'd see would be the white teleprompter blocking his face.  I suppose they got rid of Brian's and then took Bruce's too.  His bad back may have had something to do with it too.

Something similar to this happened at the Camden, NJ show for WIBN. At the Atlantic City show a very long ovation broke out after Carl's performance of God Only Knows. In both cases Mike was awed. These kinds of reactions have to be moving moments for everyone on stage.

I'm visiting my mom at the Jersey Shore, and she saved the review of the concert from the Asbury Park Press.  It's very nice, especially the last sentence.

Magical memories at Beach Boys concert in Holmdel
By Chris Jordan

A little bit of California sunshine came to the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel Wednesday night.

The original Beach Boys — excluding the late Carl Wilson and Dennis Wilson — stopped by to play a nearly three-hour show marking the group’s 50 years together.

It was a sweet moment. The Beach Boys — which included several background musicians and vocalists — are still the pinnacle for rock ’n’ roll harmony even after all these years. The voices of the members — including Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston and David Marks aided by Jeffrey Foskett, who took Carl Wilson's part — transcended earthly beauty on “Don’t Worry Baby.” Another Carl song, “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” was performed with a recorded track of the singer with live backing harmonies and it also dazzled.

The set Wednesday night featured the classics (“Surfin’ U.S.A.,’’ “I Get Around,” “Barbara Ann”), telling covers (Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers’ “Why Do Fools Fall in Love”), new songs like the excellent “Isn’t It time” from the new album “That’s Why God Made the Radio,” and left-of-center tracks like “All This Is That.” The latter song was written by Love and Jardine after their encounter with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and transcendental meditation, Love explained during the intro to the song. It holds up well.

There was also an upbeat, campy feeling to the evening. Many seniors and near-seniors — including Deborah Harry of Blondie, were in the packed audience, happy to ride a wave of nostalgia that didn't break into treacle or pablum. Love introduced “Be True to Your School” as a patriotic song inspired by uniforms — the “uniforms of cheerleaders,” he quipped. The insignias of Rutgers and Monmouth universities were shown, to cheers, during the song's video montage.

The Beach Boys world revolves around Brian Wilson, and there he was on stage with the band for the first time in 15 years. Wilson, dressed in baggy gray pants and a print shirt, spent much of the evening sitting behind a white grand piano, contributing backing vocals and a few poignant leads, such as on “I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times.” His presence was a benediction to the sound and spirit of the music.
