I hope my seats are ok. I'm off to the left a little. If they aren't good I'll just push some senior citizens out of the way and fight my way into the orchestra pit. I've been getting fluffed by all the video clips and news reports and talk for a month now. At last  the day has come!

Just about to leave my motel room and make the walk over to SPAC...scored a bunch of vinyl at a shop called DiVinyl Revolution. Got a copy of 15 Big Ones and an indie/underground BBs covers record. They had a light up SMiLE box for $100 and a sealed copy of BWPS signed by Brian for $150, but I just couldn't bring myself to spend that much on one item...especially when I'm the type who will buy records to play them as opposed to just displaying them.

By the way, I recorded Our Prayer just in case they don't do it tonight, but I just spoke to Nelson Bragg (Yeah!) and he said they may do it tonight!

It never made sense to me why Bruce has such an expensive workstation/sampling keyboard if he just uses that shitty 80's electric piano sound.

They didnt do Prayer. Nor Marcella. Nor This Whole World.   If anyone noticed a crazy kid standing in the aisle in the back screaming for Long Promised Road, Marcella, Ding Dang, and other 70s chestnuts, then that was me.

There was a split second when Mike was introducing Isn't It Time at the Irvine show and the crowd was pretty quiet and I was gonna yell for Ding Dang but then I didn't because I don't like to draw attention to myself. That would be the best ever if they played it.

I suck at setlists but it was AWESOME. I'm willing to best we were the best crowd of the tour so far. We really let them have it. No Marcella, Its Ok, Betsy, Whole World....I wanted to hear 'em, but the show rolled on just fine without them. No Our Prayer, which would have made my head explode. 2nd set opened with Pet Sounds. Brian gave bare minimum. Rest of group in top form. Darian sang Darlin.

They were selling $50 autographed CDs. I would have totally bought one, but....the wife intervened.

When Mike was introducing All This Is That, I heard someone scream "TM Baby!", then I screamed "Jai guru dev". Yeah, I know, kind of random.

I thought the crowd was kind of lame IMHO... Seemed like I was the only one in my section that was standing and singing during every single song. A couple kids kept looking at me weird whenever I'd yell for Marcella, Long Promised Road, Tree, Ding Dang, Finders Keepers, Trader, Surf's Up...

With the debut of Pet Sounds and rehearsal of Our Prayer? I'd hardly say so.

Seems more to me that Brian might want to sing fewer songs.

I've got a partial video of Getcha Back, it really sounded fantastic.

Surreal.  That's about all I can say now.  I'm going to write a full review tomorrow morning, but this was an unforgettable, insane experience.  Wait until I tell you guys my Brian story, it was one of the most hilarious/scary things that has ever happened to me.  In any event, you'll hear it all tomorrow, what a night.  Easily one of the best of my life.

As per the crowd, I though we were very responsive to nearly everything, heck, even All This Is That received a strong applause.  Just because people aren't standing or whatever doesn't mean they're not loving the song.

Oh, and the entire band ran through It's OK at soundcheck, odd that it didn't make the setlist.  For what it's worth, they ran through Our Prayer twice and it sounded exceptional.  As I said, Nelson Bragg mentioned it might have been added tonight.  I also asked him if he though Wonderful would be played, he mentioned it would be easy and he seemed to think it was a great idea.  We'll see what happens!

One more cool thing I want to mention before I go to bed! This is not the Brian story, but when the full band was going through Disney Girls at soundcheck, and Bruce is singing along nicely, all of a sudden, two thirds of the way through the song Brian yells "Enough!" and the whole band just stop playing, instantly.  It was really odd.  I guess he was just tired of doing that song, and everyone sure as heck listened when he directed them to stop!

Maybe up front the vibe was different. Just seemed like my section really only got excited for the surf and car songs plus the encore. Maybe I'm just not used to sit-down rock shows. Regardless, I was loving it!

Disappointing review in the Schenectady Gazette this morning.  The author identifies Brian, Mike, Al, Bruce, and Jeff, but omits Dave.  Also says "California Sun" (I assume he means "California Saga" is from the new album along with "Isn't It Time".

I thought the concert was great.  I was most concerned about how Mike would sound.  In most of the youtube videos I'd seen of previous shows his vocals seemed weak and he really didn't sound like the old Mike.  But I thought he sounded great last night.  He definitely is a showman.  Brian ssemed to be fairly engaged.  I wish they wouldn't do the dog and pony show with him holding the bass.  He doesn't even pretend to play it, so it ends up just being stupid.   Bruce muffed the first lines of "Disney Girls" but managed to salvage it.

I was happy to see Darian get the lead on "Darlin'", and for Dave to get some spotlight time on "Getcha Back" and "Pet Sounds".

Overall, I had the feeling that I was witnessing something no one could have ever dreamed of a couple of years ago, and something that may never happen again.

Nelson Bragg has to be the hardest working guy in music.  He sure seems to enjoy his work!

The tributes to Dennis and Carl were touching and well done.

Seeing Brian and his band during the "SMiLE" tour was exceptional, but there was something really special about seeing the Boys together aain.

Okay, here we go.

As I said earlier, surreal.  That was the only real word to describe what I experienced last night. At one point, I closed my eyes, and the sound coming from that stage was just so deep, so beautiful, I realized I was witnessing something truly unforgettable.  Surreal.

We arrived in Saratoga Springs at 4 PM, I was with my father and my friend, both who are hardcore Beach Boys fans.  I forced my father to leave at 1 PM so that we could get there four hours early, I was hoping to catch the tour buses enter the venue, and I was hoping to perhaps catch a Beach Boys or band member.  Seeing as we were not participating in the VIP experience, I figured arriving four hours early to the venue would also allow us to hear the soundcheck, which ended up being truly worth it.  ;)

Unfortunately, when we arrived, the tour buses and equipment trailers had already arrived, and it appeared as though the band was inside the venue as well.  We walked around for awhile, trying to figure the best place to catch a band member and hear the soundcheck.  We decided to wander around the back gate and around 5 PM, we heard sounds coming from the stage.  The backup band was warming up, fooling around playing some Four Seasons song (though I cannot place the name of the tune) and jamming.  I'm not sure who, I couldn't place the voice, but a band member said "We might be the only band in the world that can play whatever we want before we play what we're supposed to."  I thought that was pretty funny.  The rest of the soundcheck, without the Beach Boys, went like this:

-Rock and Roll Music
-Good Vibrations
-California Girls (just a snippet)
-All This is That (just a snippet)
-Pet Sounds (twice, with Dave)

Following these songs, the Beach Boys entered.  The soundcheck with them went like this:

-Please Let Me Wonder (Brian)
-Disney Girls (Bruce)
-All This is That
The band asks Brian what he wants to play, Brian requests It's OK
-It's OK
-Getcha Back (Dave)
-Isn't It Time
-Kokomo

As I posted earlier, about two thirds into Disney Girls Brian yells out, for no apparent reason, "Enough!" and that was the end of Disney Girls. Incredibly odd, and incredibly funny.

Of course, the highlight of the soundcheck was Our Prayer, which the band ran through twice. It sounded incredible.  I'll post a link to download the WAV I made of my recording today at some point.  I really thought they would perform it last night, because it sounded spot on.  No mistakes, they ran through both performances all the way through.

Following the soundcheck, my friend and I waited in line to enter the venue.  As we waited Nelson Bragg walked along an entire line of Beach Boys fans to the main gate, I'm not sure where he was coming from, he had a few of his CD's in his hand.  I immediately recognized him and walked up an introduced myself to him.  He was incredibly pleasant to talk to, what a great guy.  We talked for around five minutes, and he was in no hurry to end the conversation.  We talked about running through Our Prayer at soundcheck, he said "I think we might do that tonight,"  I asked him about the group dynamic, he said everything was going very well, then I mentioned Al asking Mike to add Our Prayer to the setlist.  He said that the rehearsal for Our Prayer "was not a good day," which was very interesting.  I mentioned performing more Smile songs seeing as it just recently came out, and I suggested Wonderful.  He said "You know, that would be easy to do."  He seemed to really like the idea.  I mentioned Mike enjoying that song.  So, if Wonderful is at any time added, you can thank me!  ;)

Oh, and I got a picture with him as well.

Well, that was everything prior to the concert.  This post is long enough, and I have an engagement to attend, so I will post regarding the actual concert later today.  Hope you enjoyed my worthless anecdotes!

Oh, I forgot to mention.  Nelson really liked my shirt, and when I told him Al actually wore it at one point, he seemed very surprised  :lol

We got there at 5 and hear most of the soundcheck, albeit from a great distance. I noticed Disney Girls ending early, but couldn't tell that Brian had halted it. I'm glad I kinda sorta got to hear "Its Ok" live, even though it wasn't part of the actual show. I thought about going over to the buses after the show with my program and sharpie but we were pretty beat.

Okay, on to the actual performance.

The concert was tremendous.  Brian seemed, as he has at many other concerts, distant during prior to intermission.  He perked up whenever he was required to sing, and though he never expressed a great deal of outward excitement, he sounded phenomenal.  He seemingly perked up the most during Sail On, Sailor, and he began waving his hands in the air.  Something of note, Brian was dressed pretty poorly for this concert.  He had the official merchandise Brothers logo sweatshirt pulled over a striped shirt that sure didn't look as high end as the other guys' apparel.  He also was wearing sweatpants, but we've seen that before.

The highlights of the first set, for me, were Do It Again, which just sent shockwaves through me as the Boys walked on stage, Darlin', which I was really, really hoping to hear (Darian sounded exceptional), California Saga, a song I particularly love, Getcha Back which sounded ten times better than the record (and on which Dave really gave a stellar vocal performance), and Disney Girls; despite all the praise Bruce has received for doing this song throughout this tour, I was blown away by the youthfulness in his voice and how crisp he sounded.

Another surprising performance was Totten's lead on Why Do Fools Fall In Love.  As other have noted, this song really sounds fantastic, perhaps better than the record.  The Boys' voices really shimmered on this one, and Totten's lead really demonstrated what a talented vocalist he really is.

The second set was full of gems.  While I was hoping to hear Our Prayer open the second set, Pet Sounds was a fine alternative.  It's a cool way to open the second set, and I think it may have surprised a lot of people in the crowd.  I loved hearing this live, Pet Sounds is my favorite instrumental track on a Beach Boys record.  The band did a really great job with it, and it was nice to see Dave up there as well.

Brian sounded superb singing Heroes and Villains, and both Sloop John B and Wouldn't it Be Nice rocked the place.  Its still difficult for me to grasp that Al sounds so damn good at his age.  I Just Wasn't Made for These Times was beautiful, and as I noted earlier Brian perked up during Sail on Sailor.  Perhaps the biggest surprise, performance wise, of the night was TWGMTR.  I mean, that thing sounded stellar.  The band's finally got this one nailed, the vocal dynamic just blew my mind.  It sounded just as good, if not better, than the record.  It felt like a classic Beach Boys track that fit right in with the rest.

The tributes are beautiful and nearly brought a tear to my eye.  Following the tributes the crowd stood for the rest of the concert, beginning with Good Vibrations.  Another surprise was how much Rock and Roll Music really rocked.  Mike was really into this one, and the crowd ate it up.  I loved it, and would take it any day over the sub-par performance I hear on the record.

Then, the encore.  This is when my night started taking a turn for the awesome.  My father encouraged my friend and I to go down to the stage, from our seats nearly twenty rows back, because others were doing it and the ushers just didn't seem to care.  No one stopped us, so we ran down to the edge of the stage near the aisle to the far left of it.  I was wearing my "Keep It Clean With Al Jardine" t-shirt and was dying for Al to notice it.  As the band was performing Barbara Ann, Mike saw my friend and I and we motioned for him to get Al.  As Fun, Fun, Fun began, Mike motioned to Al to look in our direction.  Al put his hand over his eyes, like someone does when looking from a distance, and spotted us! I pointed to my t-shirt and he gave me a thumbs up! Then, Brian looks in our direction.  Now, once we saw Brian look at us, my friend as I started going crazy.  God knows what we looked like.  Well, Brian just stares at us.  I mean, like some sort of death stare.  He stares at us for, I don't know, seven seconds or so with this blank look. He stops playing his bass. Then, he looks away, and he starts to play again.  Maybe twenty seconds later, he looks back at us.  He gives us the same blank look, and we go crazy again! Then, he looks away and walks in full circle around Jeff Foskett and stands behind him, so that he can no longer make eye contact with us.  It was absolutely hilarious.  It was also absolutely scary, because Brian gave us the look of death.  I don't know if we made him uncomfortable, or what, but he sure didn't like the fanatical way in which we were cheering his name.  Did anyone else notice him completely change his position on stage?

Anyway, that was the "Brian story" or whatever.  I thought it was worth telling.  We talked about it the whole two and a half hours home from Saratoga Springs.

Some quick notes before I leave you with Our Prayer.  As so many others have stated, Dave's guitar work is freaking awesome.  It really adds life to the show.  Al, as stated earlier, sounds as good as he did in 1965, no joke.  Mike is an exceptional frontman.  His jokes and overall persona were excellent; very fitting and tasteful.  He really got into some songs, and when he did he was so much fun to watch.  He engages the audience incredibly well, even when I was twenty rows back I waved during a song and he pointed to me.

Alright, here you all go! Our Prayer!  For a while, I really basked in the fact that I possessed the only live recording of Our Prayer performed by the Beach Boys in the world.  However, it is time to do the world a service and share it with you all  ;)  Sorry for the semi-awful quality, I was actually outside the venue during this and it was recorded with a camera.  It is, at any rate, very clear and one can pick out the voices quite well.

Enjoy!  ;D

Later, I'll post some other videos I managed to take, and some photos as well!

I shot the whole song. Brian hitched his pants several times. Jeff said something to him at one point and Brian's face lit up. I'll post my poorly recorded video later.

Gorgeous. Thanks so much for Our Prayer, the one thing I've been dying to hear them do this tour. It should make for a ridiculously powerful opening to the second set if they add it!

Zach, thanks for OurPrayer. It is sublime. How magical are these voices! 50 years after, through a simple run-through at a soundcheck, recorded from the distance... And you still can feel the overwhelming impact of these men singing together.

Man oh man that sounds nice.  Thanks Zach.  Mike's bass vocal I bet would shake the walls of any venue it gets performed at.  As ironic as Mike wants to admit it: he shines on many of the SMiLE tracks.

...I think I saw God during that "Our Prayer" clip.

As my wife said, it's the mundane background noise around it which really makes it.  It's like, we'll just casually run through the Hallelujah Chorus while everyone's setting up...

Exactly what I was thinking, here's all these people who are milling about, waiting in line to see a Beach Boys concert, who call themselves Beach Boys fans.  There's Our Prayer playing in the background, this angelic, beautiful piece of music, and no one seemed to appreciate that.  Some lady asked me what I could see when I was recording the other performance. I quietly told her (as I was recording, which annoyed me a bit) that the band was singing a rare song.  It's the best I could come up with.  You just can't explain to a casual fan the depth and meaning of a run through during a soundcheck of Our Prayer.  Incredible stuff.

I was hanging around the front of the venue down by the buses hoping to catch a band member...also looked like a father and his sons were hanging around...overheard one of them talk about meeting Nelson Bragg and that he drove his own car to the show...wasn`t intentionally trying to eavesdrop... but then the security guard pretty much shoos everyone away.

It's kind of funny how Brian only coaches Al . I find it hard to believe Mike and Bruce are perfect on that song ( I know Bruce isn't)  but Brian only coaches Al. Because he feels more comfortable doing it with Al and not the others or because Al is off more?
That Carl line is son of a gun to sing. I think Brian has a lot of trust in Al's voice at this point which is why they are doing Cottonfields on this tour ( Al mentioned Brian loved it) and he wanted Al to sing Carl's line.

Well, Mike mostly just sings along with Brian and doesn't sing the same parts he's done on the recording (the ba-ba-dit-dit's for example) so I guess there is not much for Brian to coach. I think it's just for fun or because he likes Al's voice so much that he tries to express through his gestures how it should sound. Dennis did that on his sessions. When he couldn't express it in words he danced around to "show" the way it should feel.
