None of them can perform it anymore.  Brian has been handing it off to Darian during his recent tours and I believe I've read the others have struggled to sing it as well.  They should really have Justyn come on and sing the song as a tribute to his dad one of these nights.

My folks are lucky enough to be at this show, having flown from Kansas to California just for the show (after hearing my constant ravings of the NYC show I attended, they couldn't resist). My mom sent me a couple short clips of California Saga performing, so I thought I'd upload 'em and share them as they come. Quality is shoddy cell phone quality, so nothing to write home about, but whoever is singing lead on Little Bird (Carl B.?) is certainly doing a beautiful rendition.

Cal Saga was good and it was awesome to hear those songs, but I liked the presentation last night better, where they were integrated into the show and had the full band behind them.  The, uh, novel ending they cooked up for "Til I Die"...no thanks.

Good show tonight, if not quite as hot as last night.  Might have been a better crowd, but Mike's jokes fell a little flatter and some people seemed to be getting really antsy and shouty during some of his song intros. "Marcella" & "This Whole World" were dropped for this show.  There seemed to be a few little hints of Al/Mike conflict, little verbal snipes at one another in the stage banter.

wish Cal Saga had done Wild Honey rather than Anna Lee (which is hardly an impressive song compared to the rest of Friends)

wish Brian did Til' I Die for same reasons that what would IJWMFTT be if Brian didn't sing it right? loses it's gravity when others sing it.

I had a lot of fun at this show, much better seats than the bowl!

1) Brian needs more leads in the first set. Drop Betsey, a fun rarity while it lasted, but give Brian more to do! The reason why reviews say Brian "comes alive" in the 2nd set is that he actually has something to do there.  I noticed where I was sitting that a few times he'd hit the synth in the pauses and no sound would come out. Maybe he was playing at other gigs, but I didn't hear anything even from the stage monitors during those moments. Well, what else is new?

2) Al Jardine needs to stick with white suits and give Tom Wolfe a run for his money.

3) OC housewives don't like "All This is That"

4) I was so looking forward to hearing California Saga do "'Till I Die" until they got to their fancy little ending. Yuck. Whoever came up with that needs to be given the silent treatment.

5) So many guitars, yet no Spectory wall of sound. You'd think with 6 or 7, you'd get a Glenn Branca mess. Are some of them not turned up?

6) David Marks' guitar sure can be heard. Bravo, Mr. Marks!

7) Whoever did the stock footage collage to "That's Why God Made The Radio" is a horrible, horrible editor and made something worse than the screensaver stuff they had before. Such a barrage of tacky stuff!

8 ) Back to back Dennis/Carl tributes might be a little too much.

9) Nelson Bragg. Wow, this guy is f*cking amazing. Like some kind of Fraggle foley artist running around!

Dean Torrence stopped by for "Barbara Ann"... it was a great moment to see everyone have fun with Dean on stage.  That's Bruce using Dean's camera to take a few shots.

Al was decked out in a spiffy white suit that reminded you of the old white suites they donned in the 60's.  He looked great.

Interesting that the setlist specifies keys for a couple of the songs -- did they have to take them down a step?

Also, I guess they really were performing "In My Room" without the band vocals before -- they're specifying them this time...

A couple of questions:

1- did Dean sing falsetto on Barbara Ann?
2- can anyone add any detail on Al and Mike's onstage tension? Is this for real, or just some  good-spirited banter? For instance, I saw Al pinch his nose during one of Mike's vocals in an encore... Not to say that there has not been tension between those two, but perhaps they relate in that way now, throwing sharp remarks and jokes at each other ("you are next, Al!").

Yeah, they dropped FFF to its original key, which is great. Surfin USA they've done in E and E-flat on this tour.

I can't honestly say I noticed a Mike/Al tension but definitely a few snipey remarks between Mike and Bruce.  Mike was making a few digs about Bruce and Barry Manilow's hit "I Write The Song" saying they won't be able to play it tonight but it'd be okay because we could hear it anytime we're in a dentist office or elevator.  To which, Bruce replied... "Yup...right after Kokomo!"  The crowd "ooh'd" at that one.  They seem to have a prickly sense of humor towards each other...we'll never know how serious it is.

Every show I've seen, Mike and Al have gone on together great.  Al keeps a steady eye on Mike for leads and cues and support.  I saw a couple smiles between the two and couldn't have noticed any drama between them.  Al was in a great mood last night and he's honestly the best one on stage that makes eye contact with the crowd.  Real cool.

At soundcheck, it was great to see the band work through a few songs.  Poor Al, though..he wanted to work on a few things here and there like the beginning to "California Saga" and then the outro to "Kiss Me Baby" but the band kinda ignored his requests.  Al would politely throw out ideas like "Should we do the outro to "Kiss Me Baby." You know, get that syncopated thing down?"  No response from the group or acknowledgement.  He would just shrug his shoulders and assume everyone was happy with it.

Scott Totten was a little tougher on this soundcheck...but not in a mean way but rather he was doing what looked like a maintenance check.  He wanted to runthrough the vocals on TWGMTR, asking each guy to do their harmonies.  A few needed tightening up in the vocals and they ironed it out.  I think Brian's "let's get this going" or anxiousness that he displays during the soundcheck is a little bit of him putting us on...a mini performance for entertainment's sake.  "Brian, what do you sing on that song?"  "What are you talking about?"  "The harmony."  "For which song?"  "That's Why God Made The Radio."  "Oh, what about it?"  "Which harmony do you sing?"  (Brian sings a little bit) "That one."  Hahah...he's hilarious.  Who knows what his motivations are but I think deep down Brian's still that Brian where he wants to goof off...but it just comes off as odd now.  Who knows...I was amused by that moment.

One thing I've grown to appreciate is Mike's bass vocal.  I cannot get enough of those low notes rumbling through the speakers on songs like "Kiss Me Baby" or "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" and "Heroes and Villians"  Sooo great.

I did notice that there is still such a lighthearted, playfulness to the group.  A lot of laughing going on.  Jeff flubbed up I think during "Isn't It Time" and Bruce let out a huge scream and point which made Jeff and Al crack a smile.  At one point, Al was starting to introduce "Cottonfields" but then they went into "Please Let Me Wonder" or something...he and Mike shared a huge laugh.  Mike went on about how the new album was #1 in Amazon presales and to "call up Amazon" to make our order...Al was laughing at Mike for his little speech.

It looks to me like Al is really like the glue that keeps everyone in an even temperature on this tour.  He's really happy to be up there, playing these songs with these guys and I think he'l be just as sad as everyone here when/if it's all over.

One more thing: it seems like Brian's feeling better with his back?  He hasn't needed any assistance coming in or off his riser and he has been walking pretty well lately.  That's great to see.  Is it a coincidence that his back was getting better right about the time he's been really getting into it on this tour?  (Shoulder shrugs)

Sorry everybody: I have not one single frame of video of California Saga performing their set.  It was made very clear from security that no cameras were allowed---only phones...WTF?  ::)  Being right up front, I was an easy target and didn't want to make enemies so early in the show so the camera stayed off until much later when it was becoming clear they weren't giving anyone any crap for real cameras being used.

But man do I regret not filming them.  Each song they did was beautifully done.  Mike, Brian and Al all came out right before their set and said a few words about them saying that they're doing a wonderful job and it brought tears to their eyes when they heard the results.  Each member introduced their kids as they came out.  Very touching.  Afterwards, the guys (Bruce later joined) sat just off stage but still visible to anyone who wanted to notice--and watched their sons and daughters perform.  They were truly engrossed and very into the performance.  Al was grooving along to a few songs.  In fact it was very much a school pageant show and tell moment. Not to say that the performances were in any way elementary or bad---no way--but I mean that all the performers' families were all present and watching their kids perform. The parents were off to the side watching, more family were up in the VIP balcony area on stage all looking down, proud of their respective family members down there rocking these songs.  On the other end of the stage was the rest of the band...Darian, Scott and Jeff all watching too.  Jeff was loving it and was all smiles during "Anna Lee The Healer" it was really really great.  When Justyn sings his father's lead on "I Can Hear Music"...the rush of emotions sweeping through are unexplainable...it's happiness and sadness rolled into one.  The crowd erupted into applause when he came in with that soaring vocal.  Carl would have been proud.   "Little Bird" was perfectly done with Carl B. doing a fantastic job with it.

The kids did their parents--and their parents' fans, real proud.  They were met with hugs and cheers when they came off stage from their parents and other family members.  They all did so well.  The band has their own logo now...just a fancy display of the band name.  Carnie mentioend that she hopes this is the start of something special.  I hope so too.  If they continue on the road of doing these deep cuts this would be a wonderful thing for all fans to enjoy.  It really looks like they're all enjoying each other's company too and I think they're all rediscovering each other's friendships and love as a family...Ambha (?) said in an interview recently that she rarely sees all these people so it was good to finally get together like this.  It seems that this is a great way for them to get to all reconnect again.  The music is just a byproduct of that.  Fine by me!

Sorry one last memory (I'm sorta doing this more for me than anything so I don't forget them)

During the intermission, I recalled seeing Brian clearly visible sitting off stage waiting to come on again.  All by himself.  Just sitting.  He sat there looking out to the stage, spoke to a few people as they passed by, rubbing his eyes and just chilling.  You see that scene in person and you're reminded exactly what Brian Wilson's about.  I'm not even going to try to articulate what he is, or  what he could be or what he is supposed to be...he's Brian Wilson.  And he was just sitting there quietly while all this commotion was going on around him, while his fans were all out milling around in the seats, talking, laughing and enjoying this evening...while he's sitting there...busy doing nothing. ;)

This is awesome. Feels like pretty light-hearted, good-natured jabs at one another. Don't forget it's been Mike and Bruce touring together all these years before the proper reunion. If there were issues, one would think they would have come up years ago.

Yes, Dean sang on Barbara Ann, but not enough; they (al, bruce, dean) were kinda clowning around on that and FFF, while David and Brian and Jeff real rockin old style.

In a word: best show of the 3 I saw in So Cal, easily. David hit everything great--light fun banter, kinds singing as a warm up act.

last note: the ampitheatre staff and planning here hell: 1000s in line for bathrooms; gates open late, etc.

crowd polite and openhearted during new songs, though not screaming.

They do that for all the shows. That's the exact same banter they had at both Mohegan Sun shows I went to. It's definitely good natured and most important of all, planned.

Yeah I didn't think much of it but I was trying to dig up something considering someone above had said there was some 'tension' between Mike and Al.  I hadn't noticed any so the only thing I could muster was this exchange between Mike and Bruce which as you said, was pretty benign.

Al seemed to have some kind of confusion after "Fools", where he thought he was going to set up "Cottonfields" or something, right as Mike was introing "Grow Up" and the band slammed in, and Al was shouting like "wait!" over the first few bars.  So when they got to his Cottonfields intro he made some comment like "before I was so rudely interrupted by the last song...", kind of directed at Mike.  So I don't know what he was expecting to happen, the setlist was followed correctly by all appearances, but while it was all jokey and fun on the surface I just got the impression Al was maybe real sensitive to slights from Mike and wasn't going to let anything pass without comment.

Thanks for elaborating anazgnos.  I was right up front and did notice the confusion about the songs but saw everyone laugh about the situation.  Even as Al quipped that he was interrupted, he was all smiles.  As far as I can tell I can't recall Mike doing any intro for "Grow Up' because I just recall the band falling right into the first notes which threw Al off.  So any comment by him would have been directed playfully at the band and not so much Mike.  But perhaps I missed what Mike had said...a guy next to me and I were laughing about the whole thing.

No worries, Justin.  Your many descriptions are almost as good as being there!  Many thanks.  I am sure we'll be hearing more from California Saga.  These kids are awesome!  Anna Lee The Healer!  Un FREAKING-believable!!

Oh man...did it sound great live.  And I totally love their approach: Carnie's husband Rob Bonfiglio on guitar and Billy Hinsche on keyboard..done....simple setup.  Just focusing on the vocals...which come out loud and clear.  No hiding behind anything...just voices.  I hope to hear more from this group also...everyone here deserves to hear them in person!

Yes indeed.  He mentioned how proud he was to sing it considering it was a special and favorite song of his father's.  And he did a fantastic job.

Oh and just remembered that Marilyn, Brian's first wife, was in attendance as well--no doubt to celebrate the formation of the new group.

Did anyone else see the big black tour bus come steaming by with Brian sitting in the front passenger seat?

This must have been no more than a minute and a half since we got up and split for the parking lots as The Beach Boys with Brian were taking their bow after Fun Fun Fun!

Brian must have hauled ass into that bus FAST! :)

We were down at the little "town" area with all the vendors and a cop car with it's lights on suddenly blocks our path so the tour bus could pass. There's Brian with a half smile just staring at us as he goes by!!!

Fantastic show all around!

OMG LITTLE BIRD IS MY FAVORITE SONG ON FRIENDS.

I NEED VIDEO.

Some:

My folks are lucky enough to be at this show, having flown from Kansas to California just for the show (after hearing my constant ravings of the NYC show I attended, they couldn't resist). My mom sent me a couple short clips of California Saga performing, so I thought I'd upload 'em and share them as they come. Quality is shoddy cell phone quality, so nothing to write home about, but whoever is singing lead on Little Bird (Carl B.?) is certainly doing a beautiful rendition.

Looked pretty close to sold out.

I just got home after an 7 hour drive and am checking out my media for the first time. Since it was taken on my phone, the video is rough looking and the Audio is rough as well, but I got most of California Saga's set. Some lovely banter in between songs. The audience dug it, and the group I went with was very into it as well. I'll upload 'em but don't be mad when your speakers get blown.  ;D

Hopefully somebody with a better camera was able to film it.

Al with the Banjo on Cal. Saga , singing lead on WIBN, white suit. What is this? 1975

I do wish on the first chorus of Sloop, it would just be Brian with Al doubling him there like they used to instead of the whole group but that's fine. Excited for my 2nd concert in Saratoga in a few weeks.  Hope Mike and Al are still talking to each other by then. ;D

I'd be interested in hearing "Darlin'" and "I Can Hear Music." I assume Justyn sang lead on both. I loved his vocal on "All This Is That," so I'd like to know how he did with songs that originally featured his dad more prominently -- and, in the case of "Darlin'," rocked a lot harder.

Leads were kind of traded off on "I Can Hear Music" as I recall, and Justyn did one verse.  He did great but I remember him going flat or just struggling a little on the last note, and kind of rolling his eyes at himself on the big screen.

The Bowl and Irvine were my fourth and fifth shows. I hate to use the word "improvement" -- but the "growth" of this show since April is astounding. It's TRULY an arena show -- and with David, the band finally has the ballsy virtuoso guitar hero they've always sorely lacked. For the group to return to their solo incarnations permanently would be the biggest mistake -- on every level. The Beach Boys should embark on 20-date road excursions playing a similar 2-hour setlist as they do now, yet ALSO embrace a top end Vegas residency, playing a 70-minute show for, say a month at a time. That's real money, major money -- something that's no doubt one of the downsides of this tour for certain principals. A classy Vegas show doesn't have the stigma it did 30 years ago. It might be the smartest option in keeping this thing going.

There was a huge, huge traffic snarl to get off the exit and into the parking lot -- I was stuck about an hour the seats didn't fill up until about the 2 or 3rd Beach Boys number. At which point the people who thought they could snag much better seats made sheepish faces as people arrived late and went back up to the lawn area. I heard half of the California Saga set while racing uphill past people, sounded quite nice drifting through the trees.

At which point the people who thought they could snag much better seats made sheepish faces as people arrived late and went back up to the lawn area. I heard half of the California Saga set while racing uphill past people, sounded quite nice drifting through the trees.

How about the traffic snarl getting out?!!!?

We were stuck for over an hour trying to get the hell out of there!

I was afraid of that, so I left during "Kokomo".  Getting out was a breeze.  >:D

I guess I've finally been punished for loving that song ;)

We were lucky enough to hang out backstage after the show thanks to Dave and Carrie Marks. We had a few beverages and a snack, talked to some of the band and some other fans...time flies. By the time we walked out to the car, the band's bus actually passed us on our way out, and there were about five cars in the entire parking lot. Needless to say no traffic problem. But I can respect leaving during "Kokomo" just the same. ;D

It seems leaving during Kokomo or hanging around a bit was the best bet. They had no one directing traffic till after we'd been sitting there for an hour! I blame it on an all too well behaved crowd!

Here's like half of I Can Hear Music. I got the introducing of Rob & Billy H, and Justyn's words about Carl.

Apologies for how awful my videos sound and look, but it's the best I could do.

Ok, enough playing around! This'll smack you upside the head:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50p8hryi4oA

Heroes and Villains

My footage with some of Justin's shots mixed in, Brian in fevered form with no auto-tune and a hilariously shy halfsmile right after "...eventually brought her down" that's the best! He's clearly having more fun here than the early concerts on this tour.

I may be biased, but this is one of the better vids from this tour, lots of great band shots. Stick it on 1080 and enjoy.

Awesome "Isn't It Time" video. Brian seems to be experimenting with a call-and-response version of the chorus, but he drops it (unfortunately) halfway through. A cool idea.

Sorry for the clumsy opening there, it was right out of the camera! good sound quality, tho... I love Love's sliding around in that.

I still have a few more vids like that from the show... car medley, Add Some Music, Be True to Your School, Sloop John B, Wouldn't It Be Nice, Surfer Girl, Good Vibrations, some others -- somebody shout if ya think it's worth uploading. Thought I'd concentrate on the newer additions to the set.

Hot rods! Time for some more...

Little Deuce Coupe/409/Shut Down/I Get Around:

http://youtu.be/x4Eh6T_W2sM

Starts off a bit creaky but then revs up into a fine, fevered blast filled with nutritious Beach Boys goodness. There's some great shots of Marks molesting his guitar and the full Mike Love pantomime gesture repertoire in full HD effect.

Mike Love served as the wise-cracking master of ceremonies, at one point sliding down to his knees to milk an opening note. Realizing he couldn't get up, or at least pretending, fellow members David Marks and Bruce Johnston helped him to his feet accompanied by a creaking sound effect.

Oh no !! Is it back to that again ? I was terrified that they are still using the motor sounds before the car-medley. But until now I hadn't heard that they are using that damn, cheap sounding effect for Mike's getting up. This ain't no lounge act anymore guys. get rid of those sound effects !

FWIW, I'm pretty sure the "effect" was done live by Nelson, and possibly Cowsill - rattling and shaking various percussion items.

I just cut together footage from this tune and Nelson & Cowsill are both motionless during the mighty creak, sounds pretty digital to me!
