I'm looking forward to some changes in the setlist perhaps.  Seeing that they've had a little down time to evaluate their previous performances, maybe we'll get some surprises  ;D

These guys just had their busiest week in a long time I think they took their first days off for a time to catch their breath.  I doubt the first thing they wanted to do was to go into a rehearsal room and work on another song for the set.  If anything--they have the sound checks to do that.  We might see them change the setlist a little later in the tour. For now, they still have to tour these songs to other cities who still haven't seen this show.  We have to remember, that they're playing these shows to the people in each city who haven't seen the show before...and not necessarily to us who read every setlist of each night of the tour  8)

So far, in 11 posts, it appears this guy knows everything.  Hope he lets Brian and Mike and everybody in on it in time for the show.

Just a question for those who have seen the show so far.

The back-drop of pictures and album covers rotating behind the band. Is it a distraction? Seems to be bright on some of the youtube clips. Also the same shots appear on different songs at the various gigs as though the selection is limited. Does it get repetitive?

Just wondering. ???

We have a few members in attendance...and some of them agreed to send updates but haven't heard from them today.  Hopefully they come in by intermission to provide their updates.  At the moment, I'm going to say that we probably won't get the set until after the show's over.

I'll update the thread title to reflect that we have a set....until then...just assume nothing's come in.

I don't think its all that unique that this show is being filmed as there was an official camera crew filming the New Orleans show, and I know there was some filming done at the Arizona show too.

By the way everybody...can we just assume from here on out that the second half of the show is pretty much locked in?  The current trend during these shows is that any new song would have been put into rotation during the first half of the set (specifically around the fifth or sixth song).  The set after the intermission is pretty standard we've seen...

Honestly I think he's sounded pretty good so far. Haven't noticed auto-tune. He looked completely miserable at first but by the end of the first set he was smiling and interacting with Mike a little bit.

People keep joking about that, but he really is, amazingly, still relevant.  He had a reoccuring role on Glee, he's mentioned all the time on T.V., I think the guy probably has lots of connections in the industry, so keeps his name out there even though he never really does anything.

Seems to be a trend, that folk don't notice the autotune live, probably enjoying the show too much! but as soon as the youtube clips are up, it blatent! let Brian sing normally for goodness sake, he's not that bad! autotune does barely any good for his voice

Not much eye candy appeal among the current Beach Boys.  Like guys were upset when Taylor Mills left the Brian Wilson band, gals are unhappy they don't get a glimpse of Stamos.

I think the dirty little secret may be, too, that more young people are at the show than old people.  (Remember the songs from here and back car songs shtick, where he asks the audience how many are under 25, and they outnumber the older folks? That was '86 or so).

So, if the people who are at the show are all 30 or so, Stamos is just as much part of the band as Brian is.

Yeah, Brian really has no business singing "Sail On, Sailor".  Couldn't one of the backup guys take over on this one?

I was one of the ones who said I'd try to give any updates, but being as it was my first show ever with them, I was way too involved to do so so I apologize. Thanks to Golden Al for the setlist, he did a great job. It was amazing they added IJWMFTT. Brian was rough on that particular song at the beginning, but by the middle and end, he had gotten comfortable and sounded good. Sail On Sailor was rough, but the words are so twisty and fast to sing, I'm surprised they do it with Brian on lead.

I'm sure Golden Al wasn't too happy with the Be True to Your School set being that I can assume he is a Miami fan. LOL Being a Gator fan, I was absolutely loving it, but I bet he didn't. haha ;) It's an inside joke between us college football fans, especially in the state of Florida.

I will post more tomorrow. Unfortunately I have work early and need to get to bed. My seats were in the third level so they weren't great for pictures, but I'll check and see how good my closeups got. I also have video and will look into getting that up tomorrow.

All in all, I was amazed and in absolute awe. The Boys were great and rocked the place like nuts and agree that Disney Girls and All This is That kind of lulled the place to sleep, but whatever. I liked them.

Things that stood out: David was amazing on the guitar and Al sounded fantastic. I also came out with a ton of respect with one Mr. Foskett. He did a great job. The backing band was tremendous. Mike was his regular self and honestly I loved his banter. He, Al, and Brian had some cool and funny exchanges.

Ok so I just got in a bit ago. I was gonna post the setlist, but I see that's already been done. So I'll add some comments.

First off, the crowd. Seemed like a lot of country club types in their leis and Hawaiian shirts. Then a few younger people like myself and some genuine Brian Wilson/Beach Boys fans. But overall, everybody seemed really cool. I have to say though, people were pretty low key during stuff like "Heroes And Villains", "Sail On, Sailor", "This Whole World", etc.

The  performance. All I can say is....wow! They were absolutely fantastic. I think Brian sounded pretty great, along with Mike and Bruce, and Al absolutely blew me away with his voice. And I must admit, whenever I saw all the car songs listed, I was pretty "meh" about it, but in this setting they absolutely rocked! Played with a bunch of punky energy with great singing by Mike,  "I Get Around", "Shut Down" and "409" kicked out the jams, as Dr. Love would say. I also thought Brian sounded lovely on "Please Let Me Wonder" and "This Whole World". Two of my favorite B. Wilson cuts, I'm super stoked I got to hear those both live.

The setlist. The first half seemed more dedicated to the earlier to mid '60s material, besides a few things like "Do It Again" and "Cottonfields". And for the most part, it was great. However, I think I would lose "Don't Back Down", "The Little Girl I Once Knew" and "Wendy" maybe for some things like "Good Timin'", "Farmer's Daughter", "The Warmth of the Sun" and "Marcella" .  Just my call. I also gotta say I applaud the band for the amount of adventurous material they played in the second half. I gotta say, I didn't realize the guts that takes until you are there hearing these things. Looking at the set as I wrote it out, they did "This Whole World", "Forever", "Heroes And Villains", "All This is That", "Sail On, Sailor", "I Just Wasn't Made for these Times", "God Only Knows" and then "That's Why God Made the Radio" in order. Pretty ballsy I must say. And I loved it.

I guess that's it!

My bad! Missed seeing it down as 'Wibn'.

So that was 2 times 2 PS songs. Could the audience cope with 4 in a row as a mini set?

Wasn't it #1 anyways?  Noway in hell they'll drop it... and then on top of that, it's my favorite song of all time by anybody.  It's a perfect song, perfectly written, perfectly sung, perfectly produced, perfectly arranged, perfect length, etc.

I'm always surprised that they play "The Little Girl I Once Knew" so much.  I was under the impression that it wasn't ever really a big hit... and to me, the song of course like most of Brian's genius songs has some clever, interesting things going on (Like how he kills the music, twice, to bare silence... and the really cool top harmony line in the chorus... and the guitar... and the flutes or keyboards or whatever they are.... etc.) but it's not really a great sing a long song, or one that you want to hear over and over again.  This Whole World is superior to it in every single way.

Ron, I disagree with you about "The Little Girl I Once Knew". It was a top 20 hit ("This Whole World" never even charted nor did it's A-Side "Slip On Through") and it is every bit as catchy of their hits at the time, notably "California Girls" and "Dance Dance Dance". But I wouldn't mind at all if they dropped "Then I Kissed Her" so they could have both songs locked into their set.

How is their current take on "This Whole World"? I haven't seen them yet and as far as I know there is no audio of this song circulating as of yet.

Sweetdudejim,  I made a mistake.  I rechecked the setlist!  thanks for the correction.  I want to keep Then I Kissed Her in the set.  I love Al's vocal on that one.

Wouldn't It Be Nice.. One of my top 5 BB tunes.  Love it.

As I said I missed it too.

Now that WOULD be f*cking with the formula if it was left out.

"The Little Girl I Once Knew" is one of the songs that got me into the Beach Boys as more than a casual fan.   I suppose for some people, YMMV.  It also rocks, at least it's not a slow song.  I'm surprised "All This Is That" stays in.  It sounds like it slows down the show and no one bought a ticket for the Beach Boys reunion to hear Darian sing a lead.  I'd rather hear "Girl Don't Tell Me" sung by Al Jardine than "And Then I Kissed Her."

Then I Kissed Her is essential imo.  One of their best songs!

All This Is That I really like but from the sounds of the reviews from the concerts the crowd goes to sleep when they play it.

"This Whole World" must be superior to "The Little Girl I Once Knew" in every way EXCEPT chart position, then.

Darian doesn't sing lead on anything. He sings a part along with Brian, and Mike sings his verses and Scott Totten takes the sky high stuff. Plus, that's kind of a jerky thing to say. People didn't buy tickets to hear Jeff or Robo-Brian either, but that's what they're getting.

Mark Lindsay of Paul Revere & The Raiders attended the show, too. He was brought out briefly during their soundcheck & introduced by Bruce. Was hoping he would join them on a song, but he remained incognito. Did walk up to him & get his autograph after I spotted him sitting in the crowd.

All The Beach Boys were dressed quite well, although some may be alarmed that Mike wore green pants; he changed them to brown after intermission. And Bruce didn't wear shorts; he looked great in a long sleeve pale yellow shirt & jeans.

It was funny at the beginning; Al had sound problems; he would keep gesturing at the sound guy; finally they came out & straightened things out before he sang Cottenfields. Brian wore a Hawaiian shirt during soundcheck & Al wore shorts! Thank God they changed for the show.  They performed I Just Wasn't Made For These Times at soundcheck, so glad they included it in the show.

A few other things before I forget...

1.  Brian was the first Beach Boy present for soundcheck. He was just sitting there, lost in his own world as the VIPs filed in.
2.  I talked to 4 or 5 people, and they seemed to agree that Brian really came alive after intermission. I actually liked him singing Sail On Sailor; at least he seemed to be trying. He missed some cues before intermission. You could see Al watching him intently.
3.  Mike was oogling some girls in their early 20s who stepped forward several times to shake his hand.
4.  Mike had to mention the John Stamos/Full House connection before Forever was performed; also cool that Two Lane Blacktop is airing late tonight on Encore.
5.  Al was still shaking hands from the stage after the band had departed.
6.  Dave can leap over a merchandise stand counter [not really sure why, but he did]. And his solos were killer.
7. Although some of the songs like Disney Girls & All This Is That might have been sleepers compared to the rest, folks in the front did stand and applaud.
8. Great watching Brian do his little dance shuffle during soundcheck on Barbara Ann {he strapped his bass on].

3. i was in the 4th row so we could see some of the girls going to the front to shake his hand. one of them wouldn't let him go so he had to forcefully yank his hand out of hers. my wife said she saw one of the girls lick his hand or something, i didn't see all that.
5. almost shook Al's hand, but he departed right after some fan wouldn't let him go. this was some guy, not the girl that did the same to Mike.

In 2006 I did the VIP thing with Sheryl Crow in Atlanta. It was called I Love All Access then, but it's the same company. The only photo they would let us get was a full group photo with 50+ people. So, at least the Beach Boys m&g let everyone get an individual photo. Was very quick; Brian was seated, and all the guys were standing around him. All I thought to say was that it was a pleasure meeting him, and Brian said "Thank you." Stood next to Al and told him I interviewed him over the phone last year [the one where he announced Smile was coming out]. That got him curious. We only talked for seconds; the VIP host was taking the photo or else.

There was confusion about getting stuff signed. A few folks hung around after they got their photo & got their albums signed. I was very near the end, but I was ushered out by security. Jeff was next to the VIP host, encouraging Brian to smile for the photos.

I met 2 guys while we were waiting in line. I couldn't believe how much they knew about the band. Told them to visit Smiley Smile. One of them, named Holt, was just 18. He started playing Smart Girls on his iPhone to prove it was the worst song Brian ever recorded. Anyway, after the VIP photo op was over, we were just milling around near the backstage area.

A guy walks up and said he got Mike to sign his Pet Sounds album. So we walk a little further & see Darian & the band eating inside the same place where the photos were taken. Darian was seated right next to the door, so I immediately walked up to him & started chatting. Then Probyn Gregory comes by.  I'm sure there were other band members walking around us; I just don't know them all. Tried to find Scott Bennett to no avail.

Long story short, Al, Bruce, and David were eating in there. Got autographs from all of them. David admitted he has no idea what goes on inside Brian's head. Also joked about the Tupac hologram thing while discussing Forever.

Talked with Al for quite awhile, he was very friendly. I introduced myself again. He remembered I called him "Mr. Al" during our 2011 phone interview. Holt had a Pickwick ['60s budget subsidiary of Capitol] LP with the Beach Boys Concert tracklisting. Al got really curious about this and was reading on the back of it. He thought the "P" in Pickwick was an R, so he was thinking it said Reprise Records for awhile there. He seemed happy to be on Robo Records. Also admitted he never finished "My Plane Leaves Tomorrow," which was supposed to have been a bonus cut on Postcard from California. Tried to encourage him to record another solo album.

The whole soundcheck experience was worthwhile, too. We were maybe 20 rows back from the stage. Bruce joked quite a bit to the VIP'ers. But his mic wasn't loud enough so I missed much of what he said.

I really wish VIP Nation would allow everyone would shelled out money the opportunity to get 1 item signed while they take the photo. Security could be standing by and ensure that the line moves rapidly. I don't think there were more than 60 folks there. That's the way Graceland handles autographs with special guests during Elvis Week.

It's great you got to do this, but for everyone else, keep in mind that as part of the VIP package, you sign a waiver where you promise NOT to do this.  In other venues, trying to go back and get autographs could get you kicked out of the venue.

Do we know anything about the DVD that will finally come out from this tour?  Are there more than one?  that is, a PBS version and one that the BB are producing and selling?  I am lost and like all of you hungry for the opportunity to listen and watch endlessly a full and endless high quality video chronicling all this. these utube videos are great as a whisper of the reality.

The problem is that even if there is a "one item only" rule, people will demand that they sign several items and personalize each one.  This turns a 15-minute meet-and-greet into an hour at least.  The artists won't agree to a meet-and-greet if this happens.  Several of the artists with VIP packages this summer aren't doing meet-and-greets. (e.g. Neil Diamond)  In Dallas, even though it was clearly explained to us that there were to be no autographs, the guy in front of me had a manila folder with several photographs; he threw it in front of Brian, and Brian had to say, "we're not signing anything", putting him into an awkward position.

Unfortunately there are those fans out there that encourage others to make them get things signed. I got VIP for my show and I'm not going to bring anything. Get my pic and if I see any touring band members, I'll be happy.

Yes, the St. Augustine show was filmed. A 12-person camera crew was there. It will be shown on PBS in June.  Check out the below article...it does a great job of explaining it.

http://staugustine.com/news/local-news/2012-05-02#.T6ML_OhYuuw

Remember the table where we had to leave our stuff? Security could ensure everyone places their stuff to be signed on the table and order that only 1 item be taken up to the guys. Security could then accompany the fan up to the Beach Boys and make sure only 1 item is signed.

Or maybe  a better idea:  Security could say, "If you want 1 item signed, "hand it me," and I'll take it over to The Beach Boys."  Isn't this possible?

Maybe all this should happen before the photo op. Keep the fans away from the Beach Boys as they sign. Then once they're finished signing 1 item, then have the photo op. If a fan says they have one more item to be signed, security or the Beach Boys can easily say, "I'm sorry..." This would be a quick assembly line type scenario. But just my two cents.

A nice fellow SmileySmiler send me his recording of IJWMFTT from this concert.  Brian did try to put emotion into this but then his voice was not in top form (and I don't know how much autotune was responsible for some parts). But the audience certainly loved it

It sounds passable, but the autotune takes something away from that song in particular. They should keep it in the set! it's one of the few songs that Brian can replicate his entire vocal as opposed to giving the high parts to Foskett

Just heard IJWMFTT. Overall, you can tell Brian sings this stronger than he did 10 years ago.

Needless to say, it would sound 1,000,000,000 x better without the autotune.

Yes, they're mine. Sorry it's taken so long to upload. Seeing the BB's brilliant performance on Jimmy Fallon gave me that extra push I needed. Hope some of these are worthwhile. Just wish I had gotten more of Brian, but he was on opposite side of stage, buried behind that grand piano...I didn't use my flash for any of these photos, as my camera probably would have been confiscated. I was sitting on aisle & didn't get to focus like I wanted to (I was also holding pen & notebook).  The lighting was weird on some of the pics, so I made them black & white.

Thanks for the nice compliments. I also took my parents to the show. They didn't do the VIP thing. Anyway, my mom kept my camera until the show started; really wish I could have taken some photos at soundcheck. You all have  to see Al wearing shorts.

If PBS uses most of the footage from St. Augustine, I think the band will look good on TV. The only one to watch out for is Mike, who dressed kinda loud & Hawaii-like as usual. I wonder if someone told him to change his lime-green pants; he wore the coffee-brown ones after the intermission.
