Seriously though, am curious to see if This Whole World returns, or if it was just a one-off.

I'm good and drunk, but just got back from the show.  It was damn good.  Brian was his usual C- effort, although he did pick up the bass near the end of the show.  "This Whole World" was not played to my dismay, but the tributes to both Dennis and Carl were moving.  Video to come!

I think the tickets to the general public were quite delayed until just a couple weeks ago. Emdeeh would know what went down.

Calm down bro. Its just a joke. All I was looking at was the show, not the people. Who were all pretty stiff imo.
If I can remember, their were no later album deep cuts (diff. from the other setlists). I was the only one there standing up and rocking out like a punk rocker, so I moved to the aisle so people behind me could see (I'm a drunk, not an a.h.)

I got the soundcheck on my phone. I guess they came in late and started the souundcheck late. It looked like jeff was asking brian if he wanted to play it and he quickly jumped up and put it on.

Stamos was there

Just some more notes:

I didn't see Stamos there at all.  Dave Marks did not have a lead vocal to my recollection.  Brian sang lead on "Do You Wanna Dance".  This was the first time I saw the band play since Carl died (excluding the 2004 performance I attended when I was working backstage).

Why...why is Stamos there...how long was he there?

I got there very early around 5:30 at gate 3 and was the first one there. From what I saw, Stamos was going around the band talking about doing barbra ann and said Brian should put on the bass (If it wasn't Stamos, then it sounded and kind of look like him from a distance. He was on the far right). Then a man came out with a bass and just stood there for awhile, then Jeff came out and talked to Brian.

Quick review. Show was great. A few things.

1. God Only Knows was incredibly moving. The idea to play to Carl on video is brilliant. No one else should sing that song.
2. I'm sorry to its fans, but they need to drop Kokomo. They could replace it with about 100 different choices.
3. Brian on bass. Yay

Guess I missed that sign.  We brought a big cooler in and nobody stopped us.  People had their cameras out and I recorded a ton of video with my phone (which I will edit together once my headache goes away).  Just a fun fact: I spent $125 or merchandise.  Bought the program, two shirts, a poster and a keychain.  Whew!

I was there. It was great fun. Brian played bass on "Barbara Ann" and "Surfin USA"  and yes he was standing up. "All This is That " was fantastic. Al was not utilized enuff. "Rhonda" seem to rock the joint the most. God Bless America and God Bless the Beach Boys!

I know based on Youtube snippets ...Al sounds by far the best! Really wish they could take some leads from Mike and give Al some more.

Interesting..
My definition of asshole is so-called fans that respect people so much they have to go around insulting them just because they don't agree with their choices.

Can't see the point adding any more deep catalogue cuts to the set list for audiences that get so steamed they can't recall what was played. Might as well be the Mike & Bruce Hayride.

This reunion show needs to come to the UK now, where the band and its awesome music will be listened to and appreciated to the full by a sober, interested audience.

We'd stay clean with Al Jardine.

;D

I think being an as*hole is when you stand up while everyone is sitting down and block other people's view.
I payed a lot for my seat, but when I got there, there was a few weird people around me and I wasn't going to let them kill my buzz. So I moved over to the side area near the walk way, so I could jam out (like any true beach boys fan would) and the concert workers completely understood. I can't just sit down and watch a show, I want to enjoy it!

I remember a lot btw.
Just wish I could remember the full setlist. I'm sure someone's gonna have it soon. There's no way I can write down stuff like that and drink at the same time.

I'm sure this morning those 'weird people' are talking about the drunken asshole sat next to them and how relieved they were when he moved to the aisle. I've encountered many such individuals at shows, who think that shelling out for a ticket entitles them to get tanked and make a nuisance of themselves.

And I still can't fathom the logic of going to such an iconic gig with the set intent of getting sh*t-faced. I'm guessing you're a college/high school kid with an outlook like that.

Dude.

Like AGD, I've had gigs ruined by prats "enjoying themselves' at everyone else's expense.

Including the symphonic PS Hollywood Bowl gig in 2000, where some drunk in the next stall was singing at the top of his voice for the benefit of his girlfriend.  Okay, he paid for his ticket, and for the drink… I'd also paid for my ticket, and the flight from Glasgow to be there.

Then there was the chump who arrived late to one of the very first SMiLE gigs at the RFH – he'd paid for his ticket, paid for his drink, and kindly thumped out the beat of every tune he sang along to on the front balcony rail.

Some folk don't give a sh*t, as long as they remember hat they probably had a good time.  Long as they have the ticket stub in your pocket to remind them they were there.

At festivals, fine, get stoned, get sh*t-faced, do what you will… folk can move if they don't like it. Indoors, seated venues, it's just good manners to let others enjoy music in their own way without intruding on that enjoyment.  Respectful.

Well, for what it's worth, here's my report:

We got there about 4 for the meet and greet. Interesting mixture of folks. I was surprised at how many people actually bought the VIP packages. You could really sense how intensely personal this M&G was to some people bc there was a lot of crowding to be the first in the gate. The other interesting thing was how intergenerational it was. I really liked seeing families bringing their kids. Though my wife kept asking if I would pay $500 for a six or seven year old to see a soundcheck. Of course, I said no. But I would have. In a country minute.

When they opened the gates, Stix the VIP guy was very friendly, very cool. He had some neat stories to tell about traveling this past week with the band. The whole process works smoothly. People started asking right away if they could get stuff signed. People had albums mostly. Some other folks were miffed that bc of the instructions with the VIP ticket you weren't to bring anything. I actually had a BBFUN newsletter from 1977, back when they were photocopied and stapled and the covers were hand-drawn. Ultimately, I decided not to try to get it signed---there were just too many other people with stuff.

So we waited about twenty minutes for all 50 or so VIP folks to check in. There may have been even more---it seemed like a big crowd to me. As we milled in the passageway I started a near stampede by pointing out that Brian was already at the piano. You could see him sitting at it over some low shrubs. He had to be hot bc the sun was pouring at this point but he was as impassable as Buddha. At another point I waved my wife over from the opposite wall where she was enjoying some shade. I said, "That's Jeff, the guy who sings the falsetto parts." She gave me a steely glare and said, "You made me lose my spot for that?"

Finally, we were led down to some seats at stage left. Bruce was the first person we saw. He walked up to the lip of the stage and greeted everybody. Very friendly. He and Brian were the only "principals" on stage at this point. They did an instrumental "Do It Again." Scott definitely in charge. Soon enough David came out and then Al. Both smiling at waving at us. Mike got the loudest ovation when he arrived a while later. Most of the soundcheck was taken with TWGMTR. It was pretty clear they're still learning the song---at least the chord progression. Scott walked everybody through the progression, which sounds a hell of a lot more complex than on the song itself (the chorus, anyway). There was a lot of discussion about a Dm9 and the need to bury the F bc it rubbed against the E. Interesting stuff if you're into music. They worked quite a while on making sure it sounded cohesive. And honestly, I think it sounds better live than on the record. Cowsill pumps it up. There was a lot of discussion about who would join Brian on the middle eight. Scott didn't think it was full enough. First it was Brian, Mike, and Bruce, then it was Brian, Mike, and Al. Whether they knew it or not, it was actually Brian, Mike, Al, and me bc my wife kept elbowing me telling me to stop singing along. They did the vibe breakdown after the middle eight several times and it was really powerful. Brian sounded great---though I could definitely see why they wanted other voices on the bridge.

I was sorta surprised they didn't run through more on the soundcheck. Probably the funniest part was when Scott called for "Barbara Ann" and Al basically went WTF? But they had to rehearse the "Everybody say yeah" intro bc a special guest was joining in on bass. No, it was not Stamos (who I never saw). It was The Man. He stepped up, thumbed the E string, shifted from his left to right foot. Scott pointed out that his bass didn't have a wedge (meaning it wasn't plugged in). Jeff said it would be for the show. It was, later, but Brian still thumbed the E string only.

They ended soundcheck running through the two video tributes. The Dennis one is amazing, and the timing was perfect both at rehearsal and in the show. We only heard the Carl tribute bc we had to line up for the M&G. It goes fast. Don't blink or you'll have a picture of your eyelids. And if you have dreams of going, "Hey, how about tossing in 'Stoked' tonight so David can shred?" don't bc you'll hold up the line. We were told point blank they're not really chatty. But the funny thing is when my wife walked in ahead of me, Mike's eyeballs popped out of his head. My wife is 48, a year older than me, and I like to think of her as hot stuff. Apparently Mike and I have the same taste. He squeezed in tight and then made a point of shaking her hand. That made him obliged to shake mine. He was very friendly, though. As we wove around I caught Brian's eye and whispered "thank you." He smiled very shyly and nodded. Any more and I would've felt like I was intruding.

If I can ever figure how to post a pic, I will. It's worth it in my opinion.

Instead of hanging out in the venue we had to exit. So we went back to the car for a glass of wine. We were parked next to a few folks also from the VIP so we talked shopped for an hour or so. And this is a great part of the night if you're a fan, just sharing stories. I showed off my BBFUN newsletter, others showed off their mixtapes. We all looked through the program, which is the best merchandise. As were standing talking at our trunk here comes Nelson walking up the hill by himself with a stack of his CDs. He was all by himself to I waved him over and we talked probably 10 minutes. A GREAT GUY. We bought one of his CDs and I highly recommend---he's a big REM fan, as am I. Mostly I asked about Jazz Fest and how the two bands were mixing. I felt bad after a while bc we were dominating his time and he was trying to sell CDs. Other folks we met saw Probyn down at the gate, and one guy hung out a while with David. So scope out the gates nearest the stage and you'll probably get lucky.

So for the show: the bad news to me is the set list is going to be the set list from what I can see. It was the same as Grand Prairie, basically---that means no "This Whole World." My only disappointment of the night. That said, there were a lot of highlights. TWGMTR was great; very powerful, almost spiritual live. Mike was in great voice, and I could hear a bass part on that song. I heard a lot of deep bass from him all night. There were some funny moments. When Jeff went to introduce the band at the beginning, he called out every member, beginning with David, then Bruce, then Al. You could see them lining up in the wings. Then he goes "Michael Edward Love!" and Brian started walking out. Mike tried to cut around him, but couldn't get out fast enough. Then during "Be True" Mike had this riff about women in uniforms and he was going, "Brian, you remember when we went to Friday night football games, and they had cheerleaders?" And Brian just goes, "Michael Love!" As in, "Michael Love ... ladies man!" It was pretty funny.

Speaking of Brian, he was in solid voice. He absolutely smoked the second (Carl) verse of "California Dreamin'." My wife, who is not by any means a homer like me, talked about that moment all the way home. He even swiveled chair toward the audience when he sang it. He was great on "Heroes and Villains," too. There were a couple of dropped lines here and there, but "Please Let Me Wonder," etc.---he sounded in fine form to me. Bruce was a little fluttery on "Disney Girls"---but damn, it only added to the poignancy of it. Al sounded great, too---"Cottonfields" works really well. Another funny moment: in the encore, Al was banging on a tambourine, and he stuck it over the end of David's guitar, which was fine until he went to take it off and knocked the knobs completely out of skew. You could see David chuckle and roll his eyes as he retuned.

One thing I will say about the show: if you believe in the two Beach Boys theory, the concert proves it. There were a lot of folks who had no clue about the band other than the familiar songs. And they do bring the energy down on "All This is That" (which was gorgeous) and even "Sail on Sailor" (another fine voice, btw). Just as an example, the woman next to me. As the video of "Forever" was going and I was remembering being 12 wishing I had Dennis Wilson's hair, she leaned over to me and said, "Now, what happened to him." I decided to skip the whole story and just said, "Unfortunately, he drowned." And, honest to God, she asked, "Why did he drown?" So I said it was in December in 58 degree water. Of course, she asked me the same thing during "God Only Knows." So I had to explain cancer. Then she wanted to know which ones were the surviving Wilson brothers. Then a little later she asked me which of the Wilsons' parents got them into music (?!?). I resisted the temptation to say, "The one that made them defecate on a plate [sic] and stare in his empty eye socket." So if you're a studied fan, be prepared: this is a general audience. They want hits. I was grateful for "Don't Back Down," which I'd never heard live, and "Wendy," which I'd heard last August during Brian's show. And "Little Girl" is always a thrill to me. Yes, I would've died for "Caroline, No," or anything off Love You, but I don't see it happening.

So, to wrap up after a long post, it was a great show. I will say Chastain is an asterik show for the VIP program, which means your front row seat isn't a front row bc they sell picnic tables down front to subscribers. I knew that already, but some of the other VIPers didn't really understand it, and there was some grumbling ... at least until show time.

Anyway, hope everyone there had as much fun as we did. BTW, in Atlanta, we stayed at a great B&B called The Social Goat. In the city with dwarf goats, chickens, and turkeys. I highly recommend if you're ever in the ATL and want a different sort of experience.

How can anyone person here think they're better enough than someone else to call them an a**hole. Some people drink at concerts. In fact I know a lot of people that drink at concerts. Yes, this is a legendary tour, that has not escaped this guy's mind. But sometimes you celebrate the things that are seminal moments with a drink, that's just what some people do, and you cannot judge them. I am a trained singer, and I know there will be drunk people and sober people alike that are going to sing a long to the songs, and sound completely horrible and off-pitch (it might be some of you sober attendees), but I am not going to tell you to shut up and ruin the harmonies, because I know you'll be celebrating by singing along with all your favorite songs. To me, horrible singing will be way worst that a drunk person enjoying their concert. But I'm not gonna call that person an a**hole for singing with their fav band.

And let the bashing begin, Mike Love style.....

Thanks so much, Kirk!  I was getting bothered going through all of these posts and learning noting.  Your review was what I was looking for all along.  I couldn't make it to last night's show because of a wedding.  But after reading your review, I was reminded of seeing The Beach Boys and Brian there about 10 years ago.  I really don't like Chastain.

Six more days till I fly to Tampa for the Straz Center show!

Thank you Kirk! As others have noted, that's exactly what I wanted to hear. Glad you had an enjoyable time, though I do wish they would change that setlist just a bit.

Did you read what Kirk wrote? The vast majority of those attending the concerts, hence the ones spending the most dollars for tix, want the hits. If you want your shows well attended, then you better play what they want to hear. Living proof of the real reason why they became a traveling jukebox.

This setlist is pretty good already. The BBs did enough greatest hits tours from 1980-1998.

Yes but you were not attempting a play-by-play!

So we've got the alcoholic review of the show  ;) which is fine, since we need to examine all the angles!

Someone should attend trippin' on shrooms or acid - that would provide yet another perspective. I nominate Ghost  :lol
I wonder what ghost's thoughts on the reunion are? ;D

Nice to read Brian played bass at a show, after someone here suggested it yesterday.  Coincidence, I'm sure, but hopefully he'll continue doing it as the tour goes along.

I payed a lot for my seat, but when I got there, there was a few weird people around me and I wasn't going to let them kill my buzz.

Dude.

I'm not going to pass judgement on our drunken friend...

But I remember attending a (non-BB related) gig in 1997 and a guy was smoking weed. This was in the days when you could smoke inside of course...probably more than one person that night was smoking weed...but this particular gent got so stoned he fell asleep with his head against a speaker stack.

Not only would he not have remembered the gig, he probably was deaf in his right ear for a few days.

We were right by Brian's piano and most of the time, no. There were two or three spots where I heard plunking eighth notes that sounded like him, and he was playing at those moments, but it could've just as easily been Darian. Then again, the only time I ever remember hearing Brian's keyboard clearly was at the Michigan State Fair in August 1982 when my dad and I sat right in front of him, and he played just about every song in the wrong key. The piano stood out very clearly then.

Back home from Atlanta and back on the computer. I don't have a smart phone, so I couldn't do real-time setlist updates last night, but I see someone has graciously provided the list already.

The Atlanta show was a nice, long set in two parts as in Tuscon and Texas, with a healthy mix of hits with deep cuts, 41 songs, I think. Long shows like this were the norm in the '70s. The last time I saw the BBs tackle a show of this length was the 1993 unplugged tour. It's really something to see this much older group pull off a show of this length and depth. The Dennis and Carl tributes were very moving and worked well. Only one disappointment, no "This Whole World."

I'm no expert on electronic voice enhancement, but Brian's leads sounded pretty much the way he has in past solo shows to me. There were some clearly off notes in places and some edginess -- no correction there. Still he sounded pretty good and even took over some of Carl's leads (like GV) and Denny's ("Do You Wanna Dance"). Age has taken some toll on Mike and Bruce's voices, and it takes a while for them to warm up, but they do get there. I was grateful to hear Bruce sing "Disney Girls." Al's voice is still strong and gorgeous, and I wanted to hear more leads from him. I recognized David singing in the backing parts -- clearly heard him in TWGMTR and "All This Is That." Vocal blends are strong, especially on the a capella start to "Why Do Fools Fall in Love."

David played a lot of the guitar lead breaks close to the original style (no fx pedals, and all-Fender equipment), but with a few of his own flourishes that added sizzle (that guy can seriously bend some strings when he wants to). I know a lot of y'all don't like "Kokomo," but Scott Totten played some really, really sweet tropical-flavored guitar on that one. It was fun to see Brian take up the bass again (his Smile model, btw), even if it's mostly a prop.

It's interesting to see how guys from Brian's band and Mike's band worked together and the resulting arrangements that were used. Some I recognized from Brian's show and others from the Mike & Bruce show, but everyone looks to be working well together, and the Boys themselves look pretty darn happy to be there.

Before the show, Probyn Gregory and Nelson Bragg wandered outside the gates, visiting with ticket holders, posing for pictures, and selling CDs (in Nelson's case). That was mighty gracious of them.

Concession swag included t-shirts (I got the burgundy "Surfer Girl" cover-inspired one), a nice tourbook (got that too), hats, wristbands, keychains, and David Marks' and Al Jardine's solo CDs, plus some others, for sale. The concessions guys said there would be BB coffee mugs for sale later in the tour, but they weren't available yet.

I think the tickets to the general public were quite delayed until just a couple weeks ago. Emdeeh would know what went down.

Frankly, the show was not that well advertised in the Atlanta area. However, it looked pretty well-attended to me. The Atlanta newspaper said about 90% full, but I think it was closer to 75-80%. Some series holders will always be no-shows, when it's not an act they were really buying tickets to see. But this was good attendance for an Atlanta BB show. Brian only drew about 35% at his last Chastain show, by comparison. This show was much more nicely packed with actual BB/BW fans, who were really into the music and appreciated the deep cuts. It was a happy crowd.

As for myself, I didn't want the night to end. After the sad events of 1998, I never dreamed I'd see the actual Beach Boys together again. I've seen plenty of solo shows since, but this was different. It was such a thrill to see them all together onstage one more time.

I forgot to mention about the stage setup at Chastain. Because the stage there is so small, they did not use full riser set and backdrop for the show. They had the back line on smaller risers with the video screen (minus the retro-style frame) hanging behind them. The principals, plus Jeff and Scott T standing a couple of paces back, were on the front line -- Brian on the white grand piano, then Jeff, David, Mike, Al, Scott, and Bruce.

People further up the walls of the amphitheater had their view of the video screen partially blocked by the lighting rig, so the venue ran the Dennis and Carl tribute videos on the house screen so everyone could have an obstructed view of them.

Why Do Fools is Jeff + Scott doubling, which sounds very nice.
Wouldn't it be nice is Al subtly doubled by Jeff. They sang a doubled or tripled lead on WIBN at least since 1994.

- Was it Al + Jeff on WIB?  -> Yes, especially Jeff
- Are you sure it wasn't Darian instead of ScottT?  -> Darian in the verses, ScottT in the coda

Not to be harsh but instead of banning recording devices and cameras they should announce "NO SINGING ALONG!".

Couldn't tell if the band or the crowd was out of tune on WIBN...so I won't say much but something vocally was really sour on WIBN. Just sit back and listen, leave the singing to the band! Bop the ol' beach ball if it comes around, just don't try to sing with them, folks... :)

Probably both  ;D

Mike sings the first verse as he always does but this time it's more audible. :p

Mr Love should be conserving his voice for his own leads rather than singing along to a notorious vocal shredder like WIBN. I did a cover of it once and it took me a good couple of days to recover from the experience!  :lol

I think that's the crowd on WIBN! Someone does sound like Mike but honestly it sounds like that person is yelling. In fact I can't even hear Al or Jeff so I'll chalk it up to the crowd.

He's been singing the first verse like that for more than 30 years, it's just too high in the mix here or he's too motivated. :p

That's all good, clapping and dancing is fun, just tell them not to sing along... ;D

balderdash!! i'll be singing my guts out.  There's nothing like singing along with your favorite band along with 100 other people

"All This Is That".  I shot this video.  Was going to put together a video of all the video I shot, but it was going to clock in at well over 30 minutes, so I scratched that idea.  Might upload a few more videos from this concert.  We'll see.

Not to be harsh but instead of banning recording devices and cameras they should announce "NO SINGING ALONG!".

I have this same opinion, but I feel like such a hypocrite because I like to sing at concerts myself. The only time I don't like people singing is when a) they're behind me and their mouth is ever so conveniently RIGHT by my ear  and b) when it's on a live YouTube video/etc.

Bits and pieces from about half the concert.  Some of it just isn't worth sharing (music drowned out by crowd noise).  I'll see if there is anything salvageable.

It could be said that the fans paid for the tickets to see and hear the band and not the audience members. I find it better to not sing along, after losing or shredding my voice at a few venues. It wasn't worth the sore throat to sing along. :)

Just getting around to posting. What a night... I was blown away by the performance, the emotions, and the LOVE.

Nothing could have spoiled the show for me. I didn't read any setlists or reviews beforehand, I wanted to be pleasantly surprised by whatever they chose to play... and I was. Brian and the whole gang were in great spirits and Brian sang as good as I've ever heard him and I've been seeing him regularly since '99.

I have to say I didn't notice any autotuning at all. Brian (and everyone else) still hit a few bum notes, but their delivery was energetic and impassioned. It was my first time hearing a lot of classic tunes like Catch A Wave, Wendy, and several others. Other high points for me were All This Is That, Disney Girls, and TWGMTR. I love the new single. My 18-yr old son came along and that was his favorite song of the night. He was really impressed.

Heroes and Villains was a highlight as well, especially during the "my children were raised..." line. Jeff made a point to step away from the microphone and the Boys just took it away. They nailed it.

I do wish they had performed at least one other SMiLE tune and of course some deeper cuts would have been just fine with me. I didn't know they had performed "This Whole World" until today, and I'm glad I didn't. I would have been really bummed if I was expecting it and they didn't do it. The setlist really focused on pre-Pet Sounds which is a shame. It also relied too heavily on cover tunes in my opinion. It's a tough call because I think Brian really gets jazzed doing those old covers, moreso than playing his own stuff... but I would personally take a Wilson tune any day over: Why Do Fools Fall In Love, Then I Kissed Her, Cotton Fields, CA Dreaming, Rock'n'Roll Music, Do You Wanna Dance and Barbara Ann of course.

I am very glad that Al was featured somewhat heavily though, even if his leads were mostly covers. That man has such a great voice. I am literally in awe of how f*cking good he still sounds. Easily the best on that stage.

It's ironic that they dug into the 70s for obscure Bruce Al and Mike material, but the only Brian tune from the 70s is Sail On Sailor. Is it really necessary to include Be True To Your School and all the classic car songs this time around? As it turns out, the most obscure Brian tune played was probably The Little Girl I Once Knew. One of my absolute favorites, but they were really just scratching the surface.

Why not showcase SMiLE a bit more, and why aren't the SMiLE Sessions available at the merch booth? Now is as good a time as any to show the world that The Beach Boys are about way more than surfing, cars, and girls. Brian's setlists have been really ambitious over the past decade or so. His band knows some deep cuts. Why not add a few to the mix? Please the hardcore fans while turning the casual fans on to some lesser-known things.

I really hope the setlist will go through some metamorphosis over the course of the tour. I'd love to see them at least try some other things because it's now or never really...

I'm not complaining. I am grateful that I got to see the Boys perform together after all these years. I had great seats, great companions, perfect weather, and heard some of the sweetest harmonies and musicianship I've ever witnessed. I am extremely grateful that these guys are still around and are out there kicking butt again on a nightly basis. God Bless the Beach Boys and Brian Wilson and thank you from the bottom of my heart and soul. Brian's music and all their voices are nothing short of a miracle in my book.

TWGMTR sounds great in all respects except the falsetto, which sounds really off.  Off that's Jeff I. Hope he hears that this part of the arrangement is not working. Would sound terrible on Leno. Any thoughts or analysis?

I was at this show and wanted to add my comments on it.

First, it was just incredible to see Mike and Brian on the same stage for, me personally, the first time.  I had last seen the M&B show in 1999 and had seen Brian three times since then. But there is something magical about hearing the group together.

I can confirm the set list that's been reported here and I likewise am disappointed at no This Whole World.  I'm also dismayed that the crowd showed little recognition for things like Please Let Me Wonder, but went nuts over Kokomo.

DAVID MARKS!  Wow! I was so impressed with his playing. He really brings a nice edge and energy to numbers that Brian's tours were missing. With him, there's actually a Beach Boy capable of ripping off an awesome guitar solo.

Bruce: sounded terrible. I don't know if he was sick, something was wrong or if this is the best we can expect these days. His croaked, raspy delivery of Disney Girls was cringe-inducing. As was his lead on "Wendy".

Speaking of "Wendy": I had been corresponding with Probyn in the days leading up to the show. I made mention that if they do Wendy someone should cough during the bridge as a nod to the fans that know about the cough on the record. Well, he had never known about the cough. Once he heard it, he promised he would cough during the song! I listened intently for it but never heard it. After the show, he came to the edge of the stage to talk to me and he said he did indeed do it and that it would be the only time on the tour he did it. He concluded his mic must not have been very loud in the mix.  I've been scouring YouTube for videos of this performance taken close enough to the stage to pick up the monitor mix because apparently Probyn heard himself cough.

Speaking of Probyn: I can't imagine a nicer guy. He seems very genuine and humble.

Al: I'd say his voice has been the least affected over time. He sounds great.

Brian: With images of Knebworth in my head, I was afraid he'd check out during the whole show. And while he clearly checked out at times, he was a vital contributor to the show, unlike Knebworth. His strongest vocal was probably on California Dreamin, his most animated performance was probably Sloop John B and he came through nicely on Please Let Me Wonder and Heroes & Villains.

Brian was singing lead on You're So Good To Me and in the middle of the second verse he just blanks out. Just stops singing, blank expression. Al stepped up and finished the verse. It happens around the 1:02 mark of this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8i4g2F5f2QM&feature=channel&list=UL

The Dennis and Carl tributes were particularly moving. I was surprised at how effective they were. "Know I'm gone away...but not forever" struck me with an added poignancy. And to hear Bruce come in as the second voice on God Only Knows trading lines with Carl gave me goosebumps.

I was surprised at how strongly the crowd reacted to Wouldn't It Be Nice. I didn't know that song had such an appeal with the general (Kokomo-loving) public.  Rhonda, Surfin USA, Barbara Ann and GV I get, but I was surprised at WIBN.

TWGMTR sounded awesome to me.

Cowsill rocked it all night long.

Foskett's falsetto is starting to not sound great. I heard him in Brian's show last August and it sounded fine to me then. But at this show...yikes. Maybe it's time to bring in Matt Jardine.

Someone jumped the gun and gave a false start on Little Girl I Once Knew. You can hear it here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8i4g2F5f2QM&feature=channel&list=UL

Of the deeper cuts (of which there were not many), All This Is That was the most surprising. Can't believe I just heard that one live. When's the last time it was a regular part of a tour's setlist? The early 70s?  It sounded great, too.  Who was singing Carl's parts here? I thought it might have been Totten, but I also thought I saw Foskett. My seats weren't great and it was hard for me to tell.

Overall, despite dropped lines, creaky voices and creaky movements, I thought the show was incredible. To see these guys on stage together, with each one making a significant contribution, sounding as good as they do... I was impressed with the historical significance of it all. I was born in 71 and didn't see my first show until 85. To think I've had the opportunity to see this show is outdone only by catching the BWPS tour in 04, another event I never thought would happen.

Final thought:  MAN, I miss Carl and Dennis!

The last time I heard the BBs perform "All This Is That" was in 1994, at Chastain. They were still doing a mini-set from their unplugged show the year before, which also included "Add Some Music" and "Caroline, No." Carl played keyboards for these songs.

I was very happy to hear them tackle ATIT again this year -- beautiful song.

All This Is That was in the box set tour in 1993/94, and Mike's band did it on the European tours of 2004 and 2008.
Judging from the recordings of this tour, Carl's lower part is being sung by Darian doubled by Brian, while his higher part (the jai guru dev part) is being sung by Scott, who sings it live with Mike's band.

I know it's been a week since this show but I've been busy with finals but I hope this review is of interest.

I went up with my parents since this was the gift that I really wanted.  It was a really nice evening and added to the whole feeling.

The setlist was good. I'm glad they played the surf songs like "Don't Back Down." That's such a sweet song with an awesome beat. The harmonies were spot on I was really blown away with "When I grow up" and just in general their blend was so good. Out of the songs that I think are stage playable I wish they had played "California Saga" honestly. Al was the highlight of the show I think and "Disney Girls" was one of the more touching ones played.   When Al was singing "Rhonda" I closed my eyes and it sounded just like the recorded version and the tv show appearance that you can find on youtube. I cried a good bit on that song. His voice has held up so well and sounds like he's in 1972 still or something.  Also Jeff was great singing the falsetto parts. Didn't sound cheesy at all and complemented the whole blend and his "Don't Worry Baby" was great.  Also Brian sounded really good. Got out of key a bit but hey, no autotune or anything and I didn't mind at all. He sounded great on Sail on and Sloop John B.

Overall a great show. Very emotional especially when they were honoring Dennis and Carl. During I think Carl's, Brian looked over at the screen at Carl's video and pictures.  I cried a lot especially during those parts. Also, Bruce's voice was a bit rasp but his "Disney Girls" was really touching as usual and even though it was a bit of a "struggle" it turned out good and was probably one of the best arranged for the concert.

Brian was a bit stiff as usual but towards the end he loosened up and was snapping his fingers and was "getting into it" and even played bass. Even though I think he was just pretending but whatever. It was a great night and time and will always remember it.

On a side note, Beach Boys fans are some of the nicest people. I am 40 years younger than most of the people there but all of them would talk to me and my parents and were very friendly. Truly a very good community of people and it was interesting hearing people's stories about having seen them in 1965 and the 70's. I can't imagine seeing them when Brian was still able to sing falsetto and such.  I had some depression a few days after the show; it was emotionally wrenching for me and not hearing Carl or Dennis or whatever. Sometimes during the blend I'd try to hear Carl and sometimes it'd sound like him but others not imitable. For example, during "All this is That" Carl's voice is very distinctive in the background but unable to hear it. So "realizing" that Carl and Dennis were dead was painful. I hope this isn't the last tour for them. I had such a great time.
