Title: Who is looking forward to the Beach Boys reunion performance this weekend?
Post by: roll plymouth rock on February 07, 2012, 02:43:19 AM
Ha woke up and it kind of hit me today that the first reunion performance is THIS WEEK! Well that sure crept up on us, hey? I wonder what they will play! Do It Again maybe? I'm predicting maybe 3 songs or 2 songs and a hits medley or something...

*edit*
sigh, maroon 5/foster the people collab can't be a good thing quality-wise. maybe the mainstream buzz it will attract will sell tickets though, and i wish them success on the reunion tour

To repeat my guess:

1) Good Vibrations
2) God Only Knows
3) Do It Again

Can't top that guess Lowbacca - esp Vibes and DIA, though maybe H&V will get a look-in, given the recent SMiLE hoo-haa, or Calif Girls.  Any three from those five.

Would be cool, really cool (!). But for something like the Grammys it's a track too unknown (/not interesting enough) to the mainstream teen audience - I guess. Could be featured at an actual reunion concert, though (something for the fans).

Depending on how many songs they can play I think it might be similar to the Reagan show.

Yah I think California Girls is a good bet at such a big California based event...

Maybe Brian blackmailed ("I won't do the show otherwise! There's plenty of cake at home!") them into

1) DING DANG (what an opener!!  :o)
2) SOLAR SYSTEM and
3) BARE NECESSITIES

Very few acts get to play more than one song at the Grammys.  There's just not enough time, especially considering all of the other acts scheduled this year.

Nicki Minaj
Bruno Mars
Adele
Coldplay with Rihanna
Foo Fighters
Glen Campbell with The Band Perry and Blake Shelton
Katy Perry
Taylor Swift
Kelly Clarkson with Jason Aldean
Bruce Springsteen
Paul McCartney

The Beach Boys have still not been officially announced, but if they do perform, I predict they will play Do It Again.  Mike gets the lead on the verses, Brian gets the bridge.  If they do a medley, it won't be complete songs, but rather a bit of this...a part of that.

I'm up for that set of songs.  :woot  ;D  But seriously, a redone version of "love you" done in concert would be awesome.

If they would just play Do It Again, why would Mike be talking about "harmonies like in '65/'66"? And I think a medley would be rather outdated, wouldn't it? Do they still do that?  ???

Do It Again, likely, California Giris, Kokomo, and a quick, tight medley (they used to do lots of those!)

Should be grand!  ;)

Mike's talking about the new album when he talks about "harmonies like in '65/'66".  If you've never watched the Grammys, be prepared for a lot of cheese.  If you look at the list above, you'll see one act paired up with another in a few cases, and these pairings are either medleys, or just one song sung by both (or all) performers.

I have a feeling they'll be rushed through at the beginning of the broadcast with one quick song (probably "Do It Again" or "California Girls") and they'll be gone before you know it.

The big key to me is, The Grammies aren't announcing it.  Leading me to believe they consider it a 'surprise', which means they have something big planned.

There's 100 great songs they could sing, but I'm kind of wanting to hear Al *MURDER* Wouldn't It Be Nice one more time.  He sings the sh*t out of that song.

Personally I wouldn't mind seeing it.  Katy Perry is one of the prettiest women to grace the world stage in about 15 years, imho.  Blue hair and all.

Not so sure they will though, that song is a couple years old now.  She's done a bunch of other stuff since then.

Haven't rumours been swirling about Van Halen being there?  Maybe they'll both do California Girls.

Some of you are expecting a mini-Beach Boys concert to take over the Grammy's...not gonna happen folks.  I know we are all starved for some Beach Boys action but the Grammy's is NOT where we should be looking for it.   The pacing on the Grammy's show is A.D.D. fast...don't expect them to focus on the Beach Boys longer than the one song they're probably going to sing.  Frankly, they ONLY need one song.

Simon and Garfunkel reunied for the first time in years on the Grammy's..they opened the show and only did one song "Sounds of Silence."  They didn't do "Mrs. Robinson" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water."  Just one song.  The Beach Boys will probably do the same.

I would say the signs point to yes. A lot of plugged-in folks have said that's the plan.

I do think to expect more than a single song is overly optimistic. My bet is "Do it Again," too, possibly at the top of the show.

I'm now picking opening act, one song (a rocker) 'Do It Again', which will tie -in with the full video available Monday along with tour details.

The good thing here is it sounds like the new album is being worked on which means Mike is singing. Some of his, shall we say, out of season TV appearances the last few years have been very weak yet during the touring season it comes on strong.

I'm kinda surprised everyone's picking "Do It Again."  The Beach Boys get one shot at wowing the fickle Grammy crowd and they choose DIA over other guranteed mega smash hits like "California Girls" "Surfin' USA" "Fun Fun Fun" or "Good Vibrations"?  I get it..DIA is sort of this tour's unofficial "anthem" (doing it again and etc) but I think the crowd needs a staple hit to remind them just how great they are.  DIA is one of my favorite songs but I wouldn't suggest that as the one song to play at the Grammys.

Title: Re: Who else is looking forward to the Beach Boys reunion performance this weekend?
Post by: Pretty Funky on February 07, 2012, 12:15:33 PM
It may be just me but if I was a potential concert goer this year and they did 'CG' or 'GV' I would be thinking "same old-same old".

If its an opening song to get the crowd on its feet, 'DIA' does it for me.

(expecting to be totally wrong come Sunday BTW :lol)

Yeah I get it...the drum intro...the guitar and the rest of the instruments coming in one by one...Nice buildup sure--- but how well known is DIA?  I can't see a crowd of 20-30 somethings stand for DIA..."California Girls" probably.  I'm not sure the crowd would think "same old, same old"...the Beach Boys are never on TV performing.  It may be old to us...but not to the general public.

 It's gonna be great!  :-D

I'm backing Do it Again - as per above, it fits the occasion - in terms of DIA's appeal to "current" listeners, it was used effectively in "Happy Feet"; one (only) speculative example of how BB stuff manages to keep rolling on and has the potential to strike a chord with a broad audience.

Or they can really capitalize on the Smile steam and open the whole show with Our Prayer!

The problem with good vibes is that it would be a Brian lead. IMHO if you have one shot at a grammy performance, and you've got accomplished and natural performers like mike and al, you don't go with a Brian lead. Not because he can't pull off a great vocal, but because of nerves

A couple a clips later the boys come out and bring the house down with two or three classics

I don't know why everybody's convinced they'll only do 1 song.

I watched the grammies about 3 years ago.  Paul McCartney played with Dave Grohl.  They played "I Saw Her Standing There", and then played 'Helter Skelter".  That's 2 songs for 1 Beatle.  f*** we've got 5 Beach Boys!

Ok ok.. My turn to guess.

Wouldn't It Be Nice  or  Help Me Rhonda with Al singing lead on both.  Both are sung by an original member and are up-tempo.

When they did the Tonight Show in '85 or '86, they surprised everyone by performing Graduation Day and that was stunning!  Bruce came up with the idea on the plane to Southern CA..

I do hope they surprise us and appear on the Grammy show!!

I personally also think Do It Again, but don't forget it was a number 1! (Or was that only in england, I have no idea!)

That would be REALLY cool if they did a new version of "Sail On Sailor" with Blondie on lead, and did a studio version that was the lead single!  Maybe it would finally hit the top 40 the 3rd time around!

Ok but seriously, is the show gonna be streaming on any site?
Anyone knows how non-US people can get to see this?

And no, waiting for it to show up on YouTube is not good enough!!  :-\

Thx!

ANY song where Brian can stand and play bass rather than sitting behind a Teleprompter will be ok for me.

I'm hoping for a "God Only Knows" with Brian on lead, won't be a dry eye in the house

I'm curious to see what band they use also
Here is my bet
*Totten
*Cowsil
*Sahanaja
*Bennet
*Mertens
*Gregory
*Walusko
*Foskett

No Bass player in that list , I know Scott Bennett is a multi-instrumentalist but if anything he will be the No2 keyboard player  , so you can add to that list Brett Simons OR just maybe we will have the core members plus a couple of the band MIMING the 1981 Medley  :-\

Made the US top 20 (number 20), 1 in England and mini-England (Australia) - number 6 in Israel!

He wouldn't actually play the (main) bass anyway, so... I'd rather have him where he's comfortable. And that's behind the keys. And I think that's probably gonna happen.

I imagine something like this with Brian and his keyboard added in the middle. Or maybe far to the side like concerts in the 70s and 80s.

I'm curious to see who will be there, too.  I don't know about Walusko.  I have a feeling that when David was brought on-board, their was no longer a need for Nick (Marks, Jardine, Totten, and Foskett all on guitars).

They may do a song then do the intro of California girls.. then on comes Van Halen takes over the song followed by Katy Perry doing her bit.. maybe not

You do know that Van Halen never did California Girls, right?

Remove Nick Walusko and add Brett Simons and you have the band that's been officially announced there, so you should be pretty close.

As for Walusko not being needed, he probably isn't but I'd still like to see him in the band. If nothing else, while there are four guitarists on stage, there are only two *good* guitarists - Totten and Marks. Foskett and Jardine are both competent rhythm players, but I don't expect their guitars will add much of anything to the sound.
(Though having said that, I wouldn't be surprised if Probyn doesn't play guitar on at least some songs on the full tour.)

But the lead singer in Van Halen did. Including the other 3 members would not be much of a stretch.

Yeah, David Lee Roth released it as a solo record just before he quit the band.  I don't think Ed would want to go there.

It's been over 25 years. He's probably over it by now.  ;)

Jardine is actually a pretty decent rhythm guitar player in terms of his parts - he isn't just strumming ordinary chords for the most part. Adamghost did a nice write up of his time playing with him somewhere around here to this effect.

Foskett, on the other hand, has been quoted to the effect of 'I play enough guitar to have something to do with my hands up there'. But he's not primarily a guitarist on this tour, so that's cool. Walusko does great soloing work, but then with David Marks I'm not sure how necessary that is.

Ugh well that's lame...
The Beach Boys — Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston, and David Marks, who have not performed together live in more than two decades — will reunite on the GRAMMY stage and join current GRAMMY nominees Foster The People and Maroon 5 for a special performance.

Ha I should change the topic title

No probably about it: she won't, or at any C50/BW shows in the foreseeable future, I suspect. It's been handled somewhat better than the Lizik/Hines fiasco, but you can't look at the last few years and come to any other conclusion than that she's out of the band.

I want 'Shortenin' Bread'. In the extended version, with a rap section from Iggy Pop.

I will not have anything else. It's either my way, or the highway.
