Title: bathroom echo chamber
Post by: Uncomfortable Seat on March 23, 2006, 08:43:56 AM
I need to know how well the speaker-and-mic-in-bathroom setup works, as i'm not sure there's a natural echo chamber in any studio in my town.  I suppose Riders On The Storm employed a bathroom echo chamber . . .

Uncom,

Hey, it's a time-tested method...

But alot depends on the speaker,
the mic,
and especially the bathroom...

If you can find a room that gives you
the type of echo/verb that you want:

Put the mic where your ears hear the best effect...

Experiment with locations for the speaker...

Any cheap-but-decent mic
(even sm57/58s) will work...

Or you could try an omni mic, etc., etc...

Any decent monitor or speaker will work
(if the room has the sound that you want)...

Good luck,

We used my parents bathroom shower once.

We hung a b-1 condenser microphone over the showerhead and the vocalist stood at the end of the room. he shouted/sang the words for certain parts and we'd record them from the microphone. it gave this heavy reverb''d sound that we mixed behind the same dry vocals. it gave it an awesome effect that a lot of people commented on.

we also mic'd my fender amp (i cant remember the model unit and im not at home so I cant see what it is) in my bathroom. we placed a sm57 right infront of it and then the same b-1 mic behind it. the sm57 came out nice n dry and we used the b1 for reverb on certain parts to give it a nice washy sound.

good times.

"...nice washy sound..." can take on a whole new
meaning when you happen to be in the shower... ::)
