Jumpin Jack Flash and Hey Jude are rival contenders. But I gotta go with The Beatles on this one.

I'm not a fan of the Rolling Stones (and I have tried). Idk, just not my style, so I can't really judge this one. But I LOVE jumpin jack flash.

I like both the Beatles and The Stones but I have always felt the Beatles were a better group. I also never really liked the Stones' productions. But I know their songs and side by side I'll choose the Beatles everytime except for Paint It Black, which is a really powerful record.

Yeah. One day I'm sure I'll get into them - but for now I just can't do it. Idk, I like beauty in music (which is why I LOVE the Beach Boys) - but The Rolling Stones are more raw sounding than I like.

Yes you're right they do sound raw. I love it.  Not every group has beautiful melodies like the beach boys ..They are one in a billion. :)

Get Back vs. Sympathy For The Devil - Mick & Paul sound really cool there!
Something vs. Honky Tonk Woman - cool performance in Hyde Park by the Stones in tribute concert for Brian.

Mick... well, yes, I suppose so (to a degree).

It was visiting Brian Jones's home town of Cheltenham and reading about his musical and other exploits that aroused my recent interest in mainly the early Stones. I tend to lose interest fast after Exile on Main Street...

This is nice un-inflammatory thread about comparing Beatles & Stones songs. Do you see any harm in topic subject? Because I don't. People replied here, in nice civil way. Newguy is banned & you know it so what's the problem? Besides, lots of people bumped ancient threads over the years & somehow I get the notice. Let people talk.

I agree entirely. It's a timeless subject that clearly still appeals, judging from the number of new posts.

Nobody's slagging anyone or anything off, no extraneous elements have crept in to drag it down...

If only all topics were like this!

Most other forums look down upon bumping a thread that is several years old. Not a rule here, but I've been put in "time out" on other boards for having done that. Other than that, though, I'm ok with it being revived, and yeah it's a good topic

Yes but it's other forums. They've got nothing to do with this board's rules. Why ask why this thread was bumped if it's a good topic?

Thanks, Billy. I've always assumed that time stands still out here in the icy wastes of cyberspace, lol.

I've heard that too, about other boards being intolerant of bumping old stuff, and never understood the logic behind it.

Anyway, onward and upward...

I'd like to buoy what Billy said. Any other forum, if I had seen a necropost like that I would  have locked the thread and given the member who necroposted it an infraction.

But here, yeah. A thread goes necro and repeat myself like an idiot.  :lol

I replied to Alex, that his joke was old & had nothing to do with the topic at hand. I don't even care who started thread - Newguy, nobody, whoever. I just read the OP, if it's sth. I can add, I revive it. That's all.

Looking at the list, it's quite a marvel looking at the quality of songs released by the Stones and The Beatles during the 60s.  Add the rest of the British Invasion groups and The Beach Boys also.

I'm fairly confident we'll never see anything like that in music again.

Title: Re: Year by Year

And even if we did have the quality of songs, the production would kill it. And, on the offchance the production was good, there's hardly an industry these days, at least as far as physical media sales

Ok, here's an interesting "thought experiment". If we ever did have the same quality of songs that came from the 60's, how would we know? Think about it, the people in the 60's didn't know their music  was "special" until after the fact. What was that saying....hindsight is 20/20?  ;D

She Loves You (as much as I love Come On)
I Wanna Be Your Man

I Feel Fine
The Last Time
Satisfaction
Get Off Of My Cloud (by an inch)
19th Nervous Breakdown
Paint It Black
Mothers Little Helper/Lady Jane
Let's Spend The Night Together/Ruby Tuesday
We Love You/Dandelion
Jumpin' Jack Flash
Sympathy For The Devil
Something
Brown Sugar

3 for the Beatles.... that's surprised even me actually

Out of the two Beatles tracks, I actually think Real Love is the better song.  Free As a Bird is cool in that it features leads from John, Paul, and George, but I think John's vocal is stronger in Real Love, and the song has a better flow to it.

I think most recent Stones albums have some decent tracks.  I think You Got Me Rocking (off the uneven Voodoo Lounge) could set side by side with some of their early 70s songs.  Steel Wheels and A Bigger Bang were both decent LPs.  Although the less said about Bridges to Babylon, the better.

When Free as a Bird and Real Love were released, it was just a treat to have "new" Beatles songs.  Over 20 years after the novelty has worn off, I think both hold up surprisingly well.

Agree. Both are solid songs. However, when in certain moods, I do prefer the original home demo versions of those songs. There is something about the simplicity of them which actually enhances them.
