Title: SMiLE - stereo mix by soniclovenoize
Post by: soniclovenoize on November 06, 2011, 04:59:53 PM
Hey folks.  I'm a newb (as you can see) but I used to post at thesmileshop boards nearly ten years ago (it was pre-BWPS).  I came to share this with you, hopefully I'm not breaking any rules and this is on the right board...  I was the one who made the SMiLE Authetic Mix if anyone's listened to that one...

After 4 grueling days, I painstakingly made a complete stereo SMiLE reconstruction (almost) exclusively using bits and pieces of the SMiLE Sessions boxset.  The soundquality is pretty great (since it's from these new sources) and I attempted to stick to a track sequence much like the premise of my Authentic construction (that is, reconstructing how SMiLE would have theoretically been in 1967, not 2004 or 20011).  And it's ALL IN STEREO which is great to hear, especially on Do You Like Worms or Good Vibrations (which I used the original telepathy verse-lyrics!).

So anyways, here it is...

320kps mp3s:

Flacs:
Side A: http://www.mediafire.com/?6whwgib17b2ocuw
Side B: http://www.mediafire.com/?1ff6ngdu1gpzlr4

*includes artwork, md5 file and track notes.

Thanks for listening, hope you enjoy!  :)

"It leads into the assembled stereo backing tracks from the SMiLE Sessions box, but instead of using the uninventive vocals from the mono mix, excerpts from the Underwater Chant are interjected into the pauses."

Or you couldn't extract the vocal = )

Does all of your vocal tracks here are in the Smile backing vocals montage?

Some are.  I just posted in the other thread how I did it...  If it wasn't in the backing vocal montage or another track, then it's the stereo mix synched up to the mono mix, with the mono mixed slightly back.  It actually worked pretty well I think!  :)

Hey, sup Beck-reference!  I've seen you before!  ;)

I tried synching it up with the mono to do just that, but honestly, it didn't seem really worth it just for a "waub waub ooo waub".  So I thought I'd go in a totally different direction, using these new bits we have, you know?

I was just playin' = ) I was going to work on a stereo "Da Da" until realizing the vocal track or any stereo mix with the vocal track didn't exist in any decent quality. Then I gave up on life. :(

I like what you did with Good Vibrations, and there's some interesting stuff in the other tracks - Da Da and Worms had some pleasant surprises.

But ignoring the now-familiar sequencing of the 2004 and 2011 versions for a more authentic 1967 edit, although interesting, isn't what I personally want to listen to as a definitive version.

So can you also just do an edit in 2004 or 2011 track order, that doesn't deviate much from the 2011 edits?

Just for the reason that having a good stereo version of the 2011 album is something I think people want anyway, and if you've already done most of the work, then, well ...

With the newer versions so familiar, Heroes and Villains feels like an experiment rather than a definitive version of the track. And there are lots of things included which to me are just backing vocals and extra tracks and bits that would never have been prominent in a real album mix [long Workshop, chanting and noises, Heroes and Villains pt 2] ... and where is Gee?

Also, I'm In Great Shape in stereo gives me a headache sadly. Maybe if the piano can be removed.

Thank you guys for your kind words!  :)
Also, holy feces @ 4 days. Did you sleep at all, d00d? :)

haha Yeah, I didn't get much at all, 6 hours each.  I was pretty braindead.  :p  I'm catching up now...

Yeah, I know what you're saying, and it would be an interesting challenge, but to me, this is what the sequence should be, but that's a whole 'nother debate, you know?  ;)

But you are right: just replace my H&V 1&2 with the stereo mix of H&V on the boxset; add Holiday; move Surf's Up up and Good Vibrations down.  The only problem is Barnyard, both he backing track and the vocal/demo are in mono on the boxset.  So you could not make a stereo mix of Barnyard, without getting REALLY creative  :/

Otherwise, Barnshine looks like he's doing one, just listen to his!  :)  You guys can feel free to use my edits to do just that, just credit me somewhere...

I guess it's the case of working with what we have, because the alternative is to fly things in from BWPS, like Purplechick did, and to me that is heresy.

... and where is Gee?
It's in H&V pt2!

haha I'd say the EQ on that whole piano/demo session was a bit annoying!  :D

Yeah, GV didn't work for me either, but I loved everything else, even the sequencing. I didn't think I would like it looking at the track list, but what a great listen. Thanks for taking the time to create it. Well done! :)

Nothing! Not even anything that Brian himself didn't try back in 2004. I'm not a fan of mixing the versions like that. I would have liked a stereo version of the original version or even the new hum-dee-dum version. Sonic... did a great job overall.

Thanks for your stereo mix soniclovenoize!

It would be nice if we could make a compilation including all the Good Vibrations stereo experiments/mixes we found over the years. Here are some Youtube links:

I downloaded at the beginning of the week and have had several listens. Would like to say a big thank you for your work and for sharing! The sound is fantastic throughout. Just wondering, is this the definitive soniclovenoize mix or are you going to issue a mark 2 in the future? My only suggestions for possible improvement would be to hide/cut the cough on I'm in Great Shape and to beef up your notes re Surf's Up:

"The album concludes with certainly the greatest song Brian Wilson ever wrote, possibly one of the greatest pop songs ever written"

Come on man, this is Surf's Up!... Definitely one of the greatest pop songs ever written!

Love the mix. Will be on steady rotation in my car (and in the house when I can sneak it past my wife).

Haha Thank you very much!

I really want to say that it is the final soniclovenoize mix, but honestly I can't say that for sure.  My older mix (the authentic mix) changed from three times from 2002-2010, so it would be presumptive of me to say "This is THE mix!" when in reality, there might be better sourced things to leak and I might have some miraculous revelation about how something should go...

I will say that I am on-the-border with this Vege-Tables mix, as I mentioned in that other thread about it.  I tried to re-arrange the parts of this new stereo mix to to have a more logical construction (like Linnet's GV Box mix, which was perfect!), but there's just to much crossfading of the sections to get a clean sample without artifacts of the previous section.  So if better sources came out which allowed me to reconstruct his stereo mix, but also allowed me to re-assemble the sections in a more sensible order (verse/eat a lot/verse/interlude/send us a letter slow/eat a lot slow/fade)...

Also, the stick-click intro of Good Vibrations, that was an error on my part, I meant to clip it, but I forgot.  :/  I noticed it after I had already spammed posted my mix on this board and others...  If I did a Mark 2 of my mix, that would be gone!  ;)

BTW The cough in I'm In Great Shape, that was intentionally left in, I thought it was fitting, adding a sense of irony to the song.  I'm also obsessed with imperfections in music that implies perfection, something, off the top of my head, The Beatles intentionally left in (The "Oh sh*t wrong chord in Hey Jude for instance).  This isn't something I hear really with The Beach Boys though, but still an element I tried to leave in.  Also, that cough signals the exact point in time where the vocal/piano track cuts out on my mix (times up with the bass note I believe) and it seemed like a "happy coincidence" which I've always felt was a good sign that I'm on the right course (such as the phasing on the Good Vibrations 2nd verse vocal, and how both sides came out to be a little over 21 minutes).

This is my mix reconstructed into the BWPS 2004 track sequence.

Another very late reply. Sorry, but I'm a married man with kids...

Holy Guacalmole, I've been having exact same thoughts recently... how imperfections add something to great music... it's a bit like the Muslim idea of deliberately leaving an error in a design to respect God's true perfection, paradoxically this can draw attention to the (near) perfection of the human artefact... examples that come my mind include the organ bursting through Country Air... to me that's the sound of the bee who buzzed all that inspiration in Brian's ear... and the distortion on Judee Sill's second record. It's like these records come so near perfection something has to be wrong... So now I'm really trying hard to love the ending to the new Holidays. It's a tough mission, but I'm on it...

Just one little note, is there any way you could separate the movements into separate tracks? Just so if I want to pick out a particular song I'm craving I can do so without searching through each movement? I'm sorry if this is too much trouble, if it is don't worry about it really.  I understand that's how the songs are supposed to be heard and all, but just for convenience's sake, it would be nice to have separate tracks.

Everything is really great though! Thank you very much!
