Title: 8 Track Tapes
Post by: bgas on October 18, 2011, 08:26:34 AM
What the heck. Rain day, don't feel like straying far, so I thought "why not post some pictures of tapes, I haven't done that in a while".
I would expect most of these to be pictured in the BBs price guide( should it ever see the light of day), but til then you can see them here.

Very strange. All the pics are scanned the same, but some show up smaller. when I try and edit them all to the same size, some change for the better and some that I'm not editing also change for the worse. What the heck?? is there a size limit? if so, how does the programming decide what to change?
OK, so I give up trying to edit. Every time I do, something changes besides the ones I'm editing...

Gotta love it, different again; oh well, no more editing tries for me...

Thanks for sharing, bgas. That's one helluva collection!

Does the Wild Honey tape include the song title Good Lord How She Boogalooed It? I remember seeing it on the board awhile back, perhaps on an 8 Track.

Uhh, I can't remember actually playing ANY of my tapes.  This IS my collection, after all.
Would I go out and spend a brilliant uncirculated coin?

Just asking :), I was just curious about the counterfit 12 big ones tape of 15 big ones with the label saying the songs were played by the company's studio musicians, so i was wondering if you heard the crappy covers of an awful album.

Hey, Thanxx for pointing that out!  I don't think I really looked at that close enough to tell. I SHOULD listen to hear the grandiose versions, and if possible, upload them somewhere. ( Have to rekindle my memory as to how, tho)
Something for me to think about , fer sure. Along with 4 tracks and reels and cassettes( I don't think I have enough time left for all the cassettes, but I may try and make the effort)  I should document them for somebody I suppose. We'll see what I can get to.
Next up, the last of my BBs 8's, the record club tapes. ( there are also a bunch of tapes with the BBs as guests, but I hadn't planned on doing them...  )

WOO HOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Say, does anyone else here collect the Beach Boys on tapes , or am I the only one? THAT would be a lonely feeling! ( But I can deal, if it's true)

i bought a sealed Love You 8track off Ebay awhile back. just got around to opening the box it was shipped in. Sad to say that the plastic coating kinda pealed off durring shipping and is extremely fragile to the touch. Oh well, at least its a great condition 8 track

Yeah. One would think that, but they'd be wrong.
How I didn't even think about not having this is beyond my realm of understanding!  ( I'm slipping, obviously)
Now I must find a copy; yours looks very excellent. I hope I'll find one at least as nice.

If you find another one, please let me know!

I have never heard an 8 track before. For those a little older than me, what is better quality: an 8 track or a cassette tape?

you have not lived until you hear the distintive clunk of an 8 track tape player changing programs while driving down the road. it usually happened halfway thru a track. plus one has to experience a player eating the tape after hitting a bump or pot hole.

short answer....cassette sounded much better to me

I guess the actual tape width used would be about the same for either one. The best sound came from 4 Track cartridges, which had twice as much space to work with, hence greater sound quality; problem being, of course, they were invented to have the roller in the machine, not the cartridge, which effectively killed the format.

I remember making my first SMiLE versions on cassette tape. Record a section, pause, record a section, pause. It sounded like crap. Good to have first rate digital editors now. :)

Did the tipical 8 track player have a record button?

Nope. Initially they only played; later you could get ones that did record, but the most common units were play only. At least from my experience

Ha ha I actually played tbese in my car in HS. This was it for car stereo besides the radio. Hissy as all bell and the track changes more often than not, jarring.

When a tape would fail we would hang on to tape and throw the shell out the window. Good Times!

Oh yeah you can record on them...Id look for factory blanks though.

The quadraphonic players and tapes sell for decent money. Some of the top of the line units sound okay. No where good as open reel tapes or cassette.

Like any format it depended on the pressing mostly.  I came in on the very end of the 8-track era. Generally I didn't find the sound worse than cassette, but I found them much harder to work with because our players had no rewind or fast forward. The track changing thing would happen too.

This was a Dutch follow up Best Of comp, after a release called "The Definite Album". So the name choise isn't that strange. The tracklist is though, only containing songs from the Sunflower and Surf's Up albm.

You are correct, I didn't post a pic.

Wand release of the Hite Morgan tapes, and another Pickwick title:

Don't know if I didn't have these two when I posted the other pics, or if I just blanked on them! ( because I definitely have them sitting on the shelves)

Black shell versions of Shut Down, Vol. II and Surfer Girl with the Capitol dome logo.

But interestingly, the back shells have the Capitol "C" logo:

There are probably other variations of the Capitol tapes previously posted, that are also not shown.  Just as with Lps and 45s, there are variations

I don't understand you point about the "C" Logos, tho. Is it on the actual shells, as I don't see it anywhere else?
OH!  Now I see those logos at the top of the carts. They're hard to spot being black on black

Alright!!   (This might be too anal for some, so don't look if it bothers you...) If you want to also all the Beatles 8 tracks, visit Frank daniels super site here:
http://www.friktech.com/btls/tapes/8tks.pdf
This description is taken from his site and applies generally, to the Beach Boys also:
>>Starting August 13, 1966, Capitol's earliest eight tracks had white shells. By 1969, they had determined that the machines left marks on the tapes, so they made black‐shelled eight tracks for their stereo eight tracks afterward. In April, 1969, Capitol announced that they had redesigned the tape slicks so as to put all of the information on the front slick. Some of Capitol's eight tracks were prepared with Lear's "Lear Jet" cartridges, while some were assembled with Audiopak cartridges, made by Audio Devices, Inc., a Capitol Industries subsidiary. Later (70's) eight tracks simply state that they were manufactured by Capitol, with no mention of other licensing<<

Hopefully someone else will bring on some exquisite rarities for viewing!

It'll be a while before I post pics of  brian, carl, and  dennis smiley stand-ups.

How about starting a new thread posting photos of your 4 tracks?  Was 20/20 the last BB album to be released on 4 Track?  Or maybe Good Vibrations?  Or is it possible that some 4 track cartridges of Sunflower exist?

I did that!  Only it was back in October 2011; Sunflower is the last 4 track( shown) that I've found.    http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,11345.0.html

I also did Playtapes( even though you didn't ask)     http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,9862.0.html

never have done cassettes....

Chris, thanks for the link to the 4 track photos.  I do recall the PlayTape thread, (and posted some questions in it), but had missed the four track photos and discussion.

And thanks again to you and Lee for the 8 track photos in this thread.

Next up, how about reel to reel tapes?

I've personally never ever seen a Beach Boys LearJet cart( also called Flat-paks--credited to yours truly) so  the first BBs 8 tracks Capitol released were white Audiopak carts with red( Concert and the twofer-LDC/SD2 had greengreen) back/end labels...

Chris, here's a white-shell 20/20 without the Audiopak notation on the back, and a different shell shape than the Audiopaks:

Is this a Lear?

It's not a Lear that I know of; I'd have to defer to a higher 8T authority to find a definite brand.
I checked to find I have two BBs like that, one in isdentical shell and one slightly different; I couldn't see any logos anywhere on either.

here's the slip covers as they were sold originally.

1st issue, front and back:

2nd Issue, front and back:

Later issue somewhat generic front with  two variations on the back; in release order, I think:

The Canadian tapes that didn't come with a song titles cover( shown on Page 1 of this thread) had the same front as the one above, with one of these two back covers:
