A really informative interview. Here's some of the questions asked etc, he does elaborate but I'll keep it short & sweet...

And if you're willing to give Brian's bio a chance of having some valuable stuff there's the part where he is discussing his next album project (what eventually became Pet Sounds) with his astrologer & he asks her about the direction he should take by presenting it as a riddle. Brian was looking to books for inspiration but wasn't finding much. The astrologer tells Brian to write about the spirituality he feels in his heart: and thus Pet Sounds.

He mentioned it in the IJWMFTT documentary. It doesn't mean it was the "secret inspiration" behind Smile.

And yes, it's quite hard to read... In my opinion the ideas were very interesting but his way of writing ruined them. Especially for people like me, whose primary language isn't English. I just finished it last night and my head is still spinning. Unlike Act of Creation, it's a novel, and it's a very quick read. It's an intricate dissection of the role of the individual (and the eternal soul as well) versus the state, as seen from the perspective of a Communist revolutionary imprisoned under Stalin. Amazing stuff.
