Title: Brian Featured in the current edition of NME
Post by: Zander on July 16, 2011, 04:35:55 PM
Was quite surprised to find Brian in the NME this week, considering how poor it's been for years. A really informative interview. Here's some of the questions asked etc, he does elaborate but I'll keep it short & sweet...

1. My First Album - Four Freshmen & 5 Trombones

2. The First Song I Fell In Love With - Rock Around The Clock

3. My Favourite Lyric - Be My Baby (Surprise...)

4. The First Song I Learnt To Play Was - You Stepped Out Of A Dream (Four Freshmen)

5. My Favourite Place - The Music Room in my house

6. My Favourite Book - The Act of Creation

7. My Favourite Movie - The Bucket List

8. Recently I've been inspired by... - Gershwin

Well worth a read...

Bill's thread will really take off!!

We can add The Act of Creation to the list of other "New Age" books he read in the 60s: A Toehold on Zen, Joyous Cosmology and Psycho-cybernetics

That's correct. And if you're willing to give Brian's bio a chance of having some valuable stuff there's the part where he is discussing his next album project (what eventually became Pet Sounds) with his astrologer & he asks her about the direction he should take by presenting it as a riddle. Brian was looking to books for inspiration but wasn't finding much. The astrologer tells Brian to write about the spirituality he feels in his heart: and thus Pet Sounds.

But this whole riddle/book inspiration/album thing may have worked out just fine for SMiLE thanks to The Act Of Creation.

Act of Creation sounds like a really cool book. :)

It is a cool book and so are many of the others that Brian read. Ping Pong was cool, astrology was cool, being cool was cool.

But Brian didn't mention those books 45 years later.

Haha! Guess Bill knew what he was talking about!  ;D

But yes, brace yourselves. There will be more SMiLE discussion, and I know how much you hate that.

I thought it was common knowledge that Brian had read the Act of Creation... He mentioned it in the IJWMFTT documentary. It doesn't mean it was the "secret inspiration" behind Smile.

Brian was also much enamoured of The Rosicrucian Cosmo-Conception (Max Heindel) back in the late 50s... but he never mentions that. Well, of course - that's because it's a BIG SECRET !

Brian did mention Koestler in IjWMFTT but not specifically Act of Creation. Personally, I find him hard to read, but different tastes for different people.

While he didn't mention the title, he specifically mentioned the contents of this particular book. And yes, it's quite hard to read... In my opinion the ideas were very interesting but his way of writing ruined them. Especially for people like me, whose primary language isn't English.

A bit off-topic, but has anyone read Koestler's Darkness At Noon? I just finished it last night and my head is still spinning. Unlike Act of Creation, it's a novel, and it's a very quick read. It's an intricate dissection of the role of the individual (and the eternal soul as well) versus the state, as seen from the perspective of a Communist revolutionary imprisoned under Stalin. Amazing stuff. I tried to order Act of Creation last night but found it was out of print... guess I'm off to the library.

The Act Of Creation gave Brian a way to do what he wanted to do & was encouraged to do. It provided methods to accomplish what he wanted to accomplish....IMHO.

He wanted to make an album that could inspire spiritual enlightenment.

Brian is correct about The Act Of Creation. "It said things that hadn't been said in print."

If Brian wanted to "push the envelope" he couldn't find a better book.
