Title: Al's song to the Eternal master
Post by: bgas on June 30, 2011, 01:16:16 PM
Got this from a Pet Sounds list posting just now( I missed it then):

>>This song was in the "Supreme Master Television’s 3rd Anniversary Celebration:
“Rejoicing in Our Green Planet and Peaceful Life”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=slLIu5Yb1MI

On September 7, Golden Year 6 (2009), in Master’s infinite love, Supreme Master
Television celebrated its 3rd anniversary of constructive television with a
special multi-cultural concert entitled “Rejoicing in Our Green Planet and
Peaceful Life.”

One of the founding members of the Beach Boys, Al Jardine, is an American music
icon. Based on Master’s poem, he wrote the song “The Eternal Ballad” and sang it
with his two sons, Matt and Adam. Mr. Jardine said, “When we performed ‘The
Eternal Ballad,’ which was written by the Supreme Master, it felt like the Beach
Boys’ harmonies were right there for me. It was very much like that, that
beginning of the harmonies that we started—very pure and very innocent.” <<

Makes me wonder which Kingston Trio song he got the melody from...

And what a stupid pile of crap those "lyrics" are.

And did you see Al's face when he gave his inspirational message to the "Leaders" at the end? Looks like The Master had a knife to Adam and Matt's throat.

Fucking hell.

Looks like Al needs rescuing.

Sorry, meant to type: "Looks like Al's had a face job!"

Having watched that I now have the Charles Lloyd TM tune going round my head… not sure why…

Americans need religion as a means to forget just how much they have been f***ed by the same government they voted in.

How the heck did Mr. Jardine get wrapped up with this crazy cult (i'm hoping he got kidnapped by this group) ??? , didn't he learn anything about these groups from doing TM with Mike?

Most birthday cakes aren't vegan, though, so I don't think Brian would be on-board all the way.

When Brian says he doesn't know if he wants to commit to a reunion because the other guys are "crazy", I think I know what he's getting at!

Transcendental Meditation and Surfing - they really haven't recorded many songs about those.

Eh, I vote for a 2 hour studio rendition of Ding Dang - a song that transcends all religions and lifestyles.

Pretty sad to see the mean-spirited comments here. Granted, the Eternal Ballad song is not one of our shining moments, & we knew this going in. This was for a private event & we were hired to perform this poem to music.  Now, I'm tempted to add a comment of my own concerning some of you that posted below. But I'll keep my feelings in check & not air it out where the whole friggin' world can see it.

Being hired to play a song is one thing, but was Al paid to give it such fulsome praise afterwards?

And why lend support to such a shitty cult/organisation? If your support is purely mercenary, i could understand it from that point of view, but you must accept that you are also associating yourself with the people behind it all.

I expected better from Al & Family.

Perhaps some of the comments read as mean but while fans might be mean at times to their heroes, they remain fans.

My own earlier comments will appear mean and I therefore humbly and sincerely apologise. For what it's worth, Al's music in particular drew me from the UK to California to see the place for myself and I'll be forever in his debt for that – I'd never have been to Big Sur and Monterey without that inspiration.

That said, as others have intimated, this gig and the endorsement doesn't come across well at all and seems to have been a result of poor judgement. But we all make errors of judgement, even the British Prime Minister.

If I may jump in here for a moment (and of course I may):

We're all members of this messageboard for a good reason: we love this band, and therefore (at least for the most part) their music and solo efforts. And maybe not everything, which is fine as we all have different tastes. And we don't have to agree with every (musical) move they make. But at the end the Beach Boys / Brian / Al / whoever can perfectly make decisions on their own, based on what they like to do best, or what they think feels right to do. We don't have to do that for them (better not, seeing the broad variety of opinions they'd get crazy!).
“We fans” don’t always agree with that. No problem, nothing new, would be a boring world if we all did. But we can at least try to respect their choices, even if we disagree strongly. Which for example means that there are more subtle (and constructive) ways of criticizing.
Yeah, I know, it's the SmileySmile-board and all, what else is new...

@ Matt J.: thanks for replying. We can’t be reminded enough of the fact that The Beach Boys in fact read messageboard like this one. Apologies if we crossed any boundaries.

@ Brother John, could you tell me exactly what your response on Al’s ears had to do with this topic? If it’s the aging process: that’ll happen to you and me as well...

Yeah Brother John, writing two quite insulting posts about Al and his sons in quick succession after Matt has posted (something he rarely does!) saying that he's offended by the nature of this thread comes across as crass and not exactly good hearted. Even if they're not deadly serious, which will probably be your defense.

And I know I had my $0.02 in the thread, but c'mon.

I dunno. Some of the stuff I saw didn't look like "gentle ribbing", almost straight out of the gate.

Yeah, I know about "honesty" and all that crap, but there is such a thing as diplomacy too. And gentlemanly behavior. Disregard for real peoples' feelings ignores both.

"Take the fruit, and let the chaff be still."  Not a quote from a cult or religion, but Chaucer.

But I guess this is still all part of the giant mud-puddle that is the Internet, huh?

I'm not backpedaling, I only say I meant nothing "mean spirited". Cynical, yes. Sarcastic, yes. Mean, no.
Doesn't mean I like what I see, but I mean what I like and I don't like mean.

As far as being in the public eye as a performer or artist (I fall into that category) you'd better get a thick skin fast. Being insulted by fans on a forum is one thing, but barely a warm up to what's out there as far as "legitimate critics" that have an affect on the buying public. Or put another way - if you go onto youtube you are asking to be ridiculed, period.

I've noticed as fast as folks are on this forum to tear into some artists, they are just as quick to turn around and defend them from outside sources.

Even if he sang all about beastility?  :lol

Did I miss the good part?

Tosh. This is the interweb, we all get over excited and over-step the mark from time to time. No harm in backpedaling in such circs in my book.

Better to admit an error than to let it flourish and grow cancerous.

I've no doubt at all that one or more Jardine's regret the seeming endorsement of whatever organisation booked them to perform that ditty.

And I'm sure they're aware that those of us who downloaded Postcards and bought the physical CD-R from Amazon will be at the front of the queue when (whenever…) the album's re-issued with bonus tracks, thus helping fend off the day when they have to play more gigs for cults.

Hopefully the ying and yang all yong and yung it into balance.

Do you know what the bonus tracks will be, and can you share the information please?

I'm guessing:

California Dreamin'
California Energy Blues
The Eternal Ballad
Sloop John Rhonda
Help Me California
The Eternal Saga
California John B
Postcard From Rhonda

I am sure California Dreamin' since it was originally one of the track samples, wondering if any other songs will be on it.

Judging by the sense of Matt's posting in the other thread, I'd say they're upset that the Eternal Ballad video leaked, because it was supposed to be THE surprise bonus cut.

… "surprise" being the operative word…

I seem to remember Glen Campbell being mentioned in regards to this. I've never had a good memory but I'm rather certain this happened.

I think it was Crosby on California Dreamin'.

Maybe we should ask Glen.
Oh, no, I guess not

Wow my post came out a little tasteless if read the wrong way. Only when I re-read did it stick out to me. Disregard the latter part, if you will; I have full respect for Glen.

Yeah Brother John, writing two quite insulting posts about Al and his sons in quick succession after Matt has posted (something he rarely does!) saying that he's offended by the nature of this thread comes across as crass and not exactly good hearted. Even if they're not deadly serious, which will probably be your defense.

@ Brother John, could you tell me exactly what your response on Al’s ears had to do with this topic? If it’s the aging process: that’ll happen to you and me as well...

Hey guys, apologies if my comments offended anyone. I thought this was a light-hearted thread and that comments about Al's ears would be taken as part of the fun. I didn't realise that Matt Jardine had posted on the board a few comments before mine, and wouldn't have made those comments if I had. So apologies to him for any hurt feelings. I guess my comments were a bit OTT for a generally nicely-behaved forum like this.

I'm just a bitter, angry man with too much time on my hands. Roll on Smile-time when we can rejoice in something positive again.

I think Al and his sons could sing the phone book and I'd enjoy it!

this is a pretty cool video from a similar event, Al sings some of the lead of God Only Knows.
