Title: Not sure how to feel about this news
Post by: shadownoze on June 20, 2011, 01:04:46 PM
Just found on Movieline's site:
Diablo Cody’s dream writing project is a biopic of Brian Wilson
Cody said she hadn’t begun a script “even in terms of research” about the fabled Beach Boys frontman, but it’d be her dream assignment. That confession isn’t much of a surprise considering she met her first husband on a message board for diehard Beach Boys fans (as chronicled in her 2006 memoir Candy Girl), and she once blogged about meeting the rock legend himself.

I've made a bit of a turn on this, Yes I hate her movies..

But she is a HUGE beach boys fan, on her itunes playlist she chose "The Trader" and "You need a mess of help"

Also, this is a funny quote

"2. She’s really into the Beach Boys.
3. To the point where she knows where Brian Wilson eats breakfast in Bel-Air."

;D Maybe she will do Brian justice

I say, what the heck!  Let them that wants to write about Brian write em. Maybe it'll turn out swell. Maybe it'll make Brian more $$. Maybe we'll all be better for it.
Maybe not.

Never seen that movie but I do like Megan Fox  ;D

Anyway after a google she is a legit Beach Boys fan, not just the hits but her favourite album is  Carl and the passions, what more can we ask for than  a real Beach Boys fan behind the camera and script for a Brian biopic

I am TERRIFIED of her doing this. I pray she won’t do it. I almost feel compelled to write her and beg her not to do it, though that’ll probably backfire by giving her more incentive to do it. Does she read the board these days? ARE YOU READING THIS "DIABLO"? DO NOT DO THIS FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD IN THE WORLD.

Uhm, also, according to this site, she married Jon Hunt. What? http://www.nndb.com/people/813/000165318/

I say give it a chance, no one is better than screwing up The Beach Boys than The Beach Boys so maybe this wouldn't be all bad.

That said, I can see it now, I'm betting Marylin would be played by Megan Fox or someone of the like, Brian by some overrated actor who got where he is as a result of his looks, or if it's set in the mid-late 70's, Zach Galifianakis.

There would be lawsuits, or blocks.

We'll see.

Yep. Diablo is -- in a way -- the mother-in-law of this board's predecessor.

She wrote "Juno" while still married to Jon Hunt, I believe. He's written about reading the script in progress.

The connections made in this world are very strange.

I think a good movie on Brian would have to focus mainly on just a couple of years. When you try to span a decade or more of his life in one movie, you get grossly simplified versions of the events that do great injustices to the complexity of the characters involved. I think a movie that starts shortly before he first took acid and ends at the dissolution of the Smile project would be perfect. Imagine, after all the craziness, a closing scene of Brian in mid-1967 by himself playing the chords of "Cool, Cool Water", humming.

Well who the sh*t do you want to make a Beach Boys film?

Hardcore Dennis fans threaten to make a film called 'The Drummer'? - board says no.

A member of the touring band for 20 years threatens to produce a film with exclusive BB's content - Board says No.

A self-proclaimed hardcore Beach Boys fanatic says her dream, and only her dream, is to make a Brian biopic - Board says no, but still would bang.

She's clearly passionate about the subject, so what would be so bad about her taking a shot at it?  Even if you don't like her work, it's a little ridiculous to shoot the idea down sight unseen.  Who knows, she might even surprise people and come up with something great.  Better her than someone who only does it because some studio thought it might be a good/marketable idea!

I do agree with DaDa though, a focus on a small time frame would be best.  Only thing is though, in order to satisfy movie-goers, you couldn't end on a dark note (no pun intended) like Smile's collapse - you'd have to add a nice little coda about how he triumphantly finished it, and that would ultimately require some mention/summary of the intervening years.

Whoever tries to pen a great Brian Wilson movie has got their work cut out for them, no doubt - I just think we should let it happen before prematurely ripping it to shreds.

I agree. I know 100% of us would never be 100% satisfied with a Beach Boys motion picture, but it should be done. Any publicity on the music is fine by me....and when it gets down to it: it's ALL about the music. The more people that discover Pet Sounds the better off this world will be....IMHO.

I hope she goes through with it.

Taking it there: Given the option, would you rather have a biopic written by Diablo Cody or John Stamos?

Nothing in Hollywood is ever 100% accurate but Taylor Hackford did a fantastic job with Ray. That's the kind of film the BB's story deserves, not some monkeygarbage indie 'hip' flick or shitty tv movie.

I think we had a good thread a while back about who we'd want directing a Beach Boys film. I forget who I wrote down at this point...but i'd love to see Ron Howard direct that kind of a film. I'd also love to see an HBO miniseries devoted to the entirety of the Beach Boys 60s career.

I agree, a mini-series would be the most ideal platform to tell a decent amount of story.  Tom Hanks has done some good stuff in that area, and I'm pretty sure he's a fan, so who knows.  I don't really care who does it as long as it gets done right - a tall order, no doubt.

have lewis shiner write the script...maybe make it a glimpses-esque parallel universe pseudobiopic, but keep the facts intact. or just document the post smile fallout time frame from 67 to 69. give me 20 minutes of the brian wilson character detailing every action from "busy doin nothin" and another 20 of the same from "i'd love just once to see you". keep the whole affair low key and mellow like the output from that time, like friends or sunflower and a nice hash joint.

LOL at your Stamos comment :lol

Howards true story adaptations have always been wonderful in my opinion....Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind, FrostNixon, Cinderella Man....sure, there are factual inaccuracies in each of them, but overall very well produced and directed....and most stay very close to the original story.

Also, he can cram a lot of good story into 2 hours...whereas Michael Bay can release a 3 hour film and when it's done I am always left asking myself 'what the hell did I just watch?' lol

I have hardly watched Glee, but I recently saw the Fleetwood Mac Rumours episode; a similar Beach Boys type episode would be interesting.

I feel slightly odd about this - back in the day I was in regular contact with Jonny Hunt and exchanged the occasional email with Cody: she was fun, bright sharp and very much the attention seeker, which was OK.  However, I have to say that Juno is the single most irritating movie I've ever seen, almost entirely because the screenplay was written by a 30-year-old trying to sound like a teen: to call it unconvincing would be a kindness and you could have driven a truck through the holes in the plot. And yeah, it won an Academy Award. Bad movies win awards y'know.

As for doing a BW project, on the evidence of her other work, I'd have to believe it would be a complete disaster.

The danger is always there that a film portrayal becomes the image of the artist which many people will carry for years after seeing the film, particularly when someone seeing the movie is only familiar with "the hits" from any given artist.

I'm guilty of it too - I recently watched Clint Eastwood's biopic "Bird", having not seen it for years. It's a striking film, the music is top-notch, but watching it now versus when I was 20+ years younger, it wasn't the same. And having done more study on Parker since first seeing the movie, I realized my image of him came mostly from that film.

Imagine this: What if this Brian Wilson script turned into Oliver Stone's portrayal of The Doors? How many liberties will Brian's fans allow such a project to take with the truth?

And we've also been burned at least twice with Beach Boys film projects.

Went to see that with friends. After a while, manager asked me to stop saying this was wrong, that never happened and so on, or kindly leave. That happened on a BW biopic, I'd dismantle the theater by hand.

Well who the merda do you want to make a Beach Boys film?

Hardcore Dennis fans threaten to make a film called 'The Drummer'? - board says no.

A member of the touring band for 20 years threatens to produce a film with exclusive BB's content - Board says No.

A self-proclaimed hardcore Beach Boys fanatic says her dream, and only her dream, is to make a Brian biopic - Board says no, but still would bang.
diablo? is that you?

im not interested in banging stamos at this time, so what remains on the pantheon of bangable directors is severly lacking. i in this respect, im gonna make a turn  and state my approval of diablo's dream.

and ron howard? no way, i guess that would work but he's a little too heavyhanded for my tastes. wonder what cameron crowe would do with it?

Just to clarify the text I've highlighted, are you still talking about who you'd like to bang? ;D

I feel bad now.

I sent a twitter message to Diablo saying if she does the Brian film and messes it up I'll hunt her down, obviously I was joking. Appears she took it seriously though and sent me a pretty rude PM.

It just gets weirder.....   Someone you don't know ( I presume, since it's twitter) , or know well, and you send a threatening note? And they're supposed to "KNOW" you're joking? Lucky thing they don't know where you live, might be a bomb in your car....

I repeat, I feel bad about it.

No doubt a stupid comment to make but it was all in jest, also I did put a ";)" at the end of it.

I will also not deny I wrote it after four glasses of champagne celebrating my girlfriends 21st.

I'm sure they'll take that into account, maybe include a bottle under the seat to revisit your "high"

and if anything happens to the lady in the next few days, where's the law gonna come looking first? You've probably made her feel exceptionally uncomfortable, uneasy, stalked and paranoid even.

Did you apologise to her?

I think one of the only BB biopic ideas that could still produce something worthwhile would be making a movie about Blondie and Ricky leaving their homeland and later joining the Beach Boys for a couple of years.

She didn't take it like that, but yes I did apologise in my reply and wished her all the best if the project goes ahead

Honestly "hunt you down" is never taken seriously, like anyone would do that

I didn't the fanworld was so selective.

The problem with Hollywood biographies like this is the way it could turn into a parody of the person or the group rather than a portrayal. Again I'll go back to Oliver Stone and the Doors film. For all the fans who smelled a rat after watching that film, how many viewers saw Val Kilmer as Morrison and assumed that portrayal was accurate? The Doors got a boost in record sales, but did the backlash against that film end up hurting more in the long run than the spike in sales for the month or two that the film was being hyped?

Hollywood is in the business of bullshit, to be quite frank about it. Even after a script is turned in and given the green light, how often is that finished script then handed over to more writers to be enhanced and beefed up to make it more entertaining, more funny, more compelling, etc based on the subject? If a Brian Wilson biopic gets approved and sent through the machine in Hollywood, what parts of the story do you think they will enhance, beef up, or otherwise invent in order to make the story more appealing to certain demographics?

Oliver Stone went as far as to invent historical characters who never existed in real life and events that never happened in real life in order to tell his story in JFK...and we've seen that happen with two Beach Boys films that never went beyond television, thankfully. I think some people just don't want Brian Wilson's story told through Hollywood's machine, no matter who is writing the script.
