That's something. So Brian left the Whiskey after the second set because his ear was hurting. And did the Echo really believe Brian was going to be with The Beach Boys in Britain in November, 1970? The "Disc & Music Echo" of course being one of four music publications in the UK in the 70's, along with Melody Maker, New Musical Express (NME), and the Record Mirror.

Did these magazines survive the fire, Steve?

these articles here did survive. i had scanned them a month before the fire. a few boxes of stuff from my collection , like these articles, were at my dad's house. my home was overtaken by my records and such. so i had few paper type stuff mostly in boxes at dad's cause i was out of room. a lot of stuff, which i will post as i have time, i had scanned but lost them because they were at my house that day.

due to actions by a kind friend, i was given an external hard drive with copies of those scans. so that is why i am able to upload these articles. so i have to say...a big SMILE to you know who....  ;D

Good to hear that at least a small part of your stuff survived! Thanxx for the scans!!

Digging these old UK clippings. This one is interesting, as the "extra" show still took place at the Astoria, even tho this piece said it wouldn't! (June 22) Cool how things could change in a week, and they could sell enough tickets to make it work.  Even more interesting , because the previous clipping( below) was a review of that same "extra" show!

Reading the Random Notes piece on The Beach Boys/Chicago shows, explain (I think) why the band was forced to go the oldies route in 76. The band was so good, and Brian's old music so powerful, fan reaction so strong, that it had to make them think twice which direction to head in. It was gratifying to me to see rise happen from the very bottom in 1970 to the heights they reached in 1976. Even through the 1980 tour, they were selling out large venues. It was an incredible ride back to the top.

How great to see that old Modern Recording...  the cover was actually shot during a take of "It's O.K."
Now if only someone could post the photo of mine from Billboard, of the 5 Boys sitting around the Brother Studio lounge with Jim Ladd and another dj, who's name somehow escapes me.  Went through every issue of Billboard on-line, and I couldn't find it...

thanks for sharing bgas....more the better. i lost a lot of printed material twice in my life. first time was 1973. i went away to pharmacy school and mom decided to clean under my bed. meaning well, she threw away 4 huge plastic bags that were full of beach boy related material. wasn't happy but what could i do. then the fire 2 years ago. a lot of the above posts come from scans i had made a couple of months before the fire. i lost the paper goods but have the scans of those magazines. time to share them if anyone wants to read them. maybe they have never seen them. sad thing is i had tons of stuff i had not scanned yet. so they be gone.
i had this magazine before mom threw it away. came out late 1971 but i don't remember the name or date on the cover. i got this from here i think. but i decided to repost it..thanks goes to the originial poster. i seem to remember the group was on the cover..

yep...first page also says page 13, also has parts in english on it
confusing isn't it?  :)

I have that mag right here on my desk. It is (or was) a free Dutch magazine, but sometimes it has an English written article in it. These 3 scans belong to the same magazine. The small article that seems to be about BW's first solo CD, is an announcement on BW's forthcoming album Imagination.

hey bgas (or anyone else). would you happen to have this magazine? i think, but not sure, it was circus. may be wrong on the name. from 1971. cover had photos of leon russell, john l., led zep and the boys. title said "l e n n o n and russell vs. led zeppelin and the beach boys...solo artist vs the group". or something close to that. not that the article was earth shaking but it was a great time in my life and memories of my fav time of the group. mom threw it out. haven't seen that article in decades.
thanks in advance.

Yep. That illustration was done by a painter named Guy Peellaert for a Rock & Roll tribute book called "Rock Dreams", originally published in 1973. Rock writer Nik Cohn wrote the little caption underneith the picture.

With the great music they were making in the early 70's, I wonder why the painter thought that they were in it for greed? By 1973, they weren't making the big bucks that would be coming their way in 1974 and beyond. If anything, The Beach Boys were paying their dues that had bypassed them at the beginning of their career. Great likeness of the guys, though.

I guess this writer didn't like the band and its fame back in the pre-counterculture days and singled them out as an example of greedy music that the late 1960s music got rid of in the writer's mind. (car of greed with a flat tire) The perception was the group was on the ropes, which musically wasn't the truth. Good thing he didn't make a picture of Brian being washed up, which would be bad taste in my opinion.

kinda overtakes one's home doesn't it?  :)
creem--8/72  posted pt1, lost pt 2
no hurry and thanks
Yes,in some ways, but in my case it's more of the rest of the collection; the mags I keep in those big plastic/Rubbermaid containers. the shelves next to my computer hold my cassette and reel coollection for my constant visual pleasure!
By the way, Rocker, I'm not picking...
For the other 45% of the magazine connection( I figure steve and I have done 90%, but I'm just guessing and maybe way off)  here's the Creem of the crop:

I'll scan until Photobucket threatens to kick me off for the month( or I think I'm close to getting booted) and then it's renewal waiting time. My months seem to renew on the 16th.

The Beach Boys contest is a hoot !  Here's my answer to selected questions:

3 - None of them.

6 - see answer to question #3.

7 - as above.

Yup, geek central here: business as usual.

This is so fascinting ! Thanks once again !

Maybe someone can help me:
when I zoom in on the Dennis articles from Rolling Stone, the writing can't be read very well. Any way I can change that?

Interesting thought. In Hit Parader June 1967, Dennis says:
If you listen closely to the Pt Sounds album, you'll hear me playing jazz patterns. Some of the things definitely aren't Rock'n'Roll

As you probably saw he also mentions Hal Blaine in that interview and that he has played on Pet Sounds. So, could it be, that Dennis played on more Pet Sounds-tracks than we think? Or was he only talking about That's Not Me ? Might he be audible on session outtakes taht were not on the boxset ?

I can't help much; I usually have a problem when I'm trying to read some of these things. What I did the last time was right clicked and hit save picture; then I opened it on my screen from there, and enlarged it a bit. That worked for me this time...

so yeah, it's interesting( funny) how my chosen free photo storage works.  I haven't uploaded any pictures since the 11th, and yet, today, the 15th, I get a notice from photobucket that I've exceeded my limit and unless I upgrade to "Pro" ( spend $$ EVERY month) all my pics are gone( but only until the 16th!!)
I can wait a day for them to all show up again. hope everyone else can also...
Thanxx Photobucket!!  ( but other than that I couldn't be happier with them)

Great guys !

It's not much but I found a review for Still Cruisin' from the german Bravo (I believe)

Translation (more or less):

There are some real gems on the new Beach Boys album that were hard to get before, e.g. the movie soundtrack songs "Make it big" "Still cruisin" or the remake of "Wipe out" with the Fat Boys. This LP belongs to every collection.

The Beach Boys Holland
Jim Miller March 1, 1973

From the nasal raunch of “Surfin’ Safari” to the convoluted elegance of “Surf’s Up,” through more than ten years of recording and performing, the Beach Boys have sustained a strong musical identity, even though their original guiding light, Brian Wilson, has increasingly become merely a shadow presence. About the time of Today, other Beach Boys besides Brian and Mike Love began singing lead; by Friends, other members of the group besides Brian were contributing songs. Through it all, with rare lapses, the Beach Boys have clung, for better or worse, to their sound, a collective style that has shown a remarkable capacity for growth.

Holland is a cohesive portrait of that style’s most recent evolutions. In acknowledgment of Brian Wilson’s still honored if slightly mythological status, even within the group, the album both opens and closes with a new Brian opus. As usual, each is informed by a singular sensibility that, currently, seems inclined toward a kind of chamber rock. Blondie Chaplin’s superb vocal on “Sail On Sailor” situates that song between recent Stevie Wonder and vintage Beach Boys, although the expansive harmonies and insistent triplets ultimately assert the group’s own rights.

“Funky Pretty” is more on the guttural side of R&B. A cosmic love song to an astrological lovely, it mounts its grit in a swirl of harmonic complications, again underlining Blondie Chaplin’s more straightforward vocal dexterity with a defiantly baroque choral signature: Vivaldi meets the Regents on a magic synthesizer. It makes for a beautiful track, built on economical and even monotonous musical premises that delight in their unreasonably complex development.

Everyone in the group has contributed at least one song to Holland. Dennis Wilson’s intriguing, sluggish “Steamboat” comes replete with doowop embellishments and a waddling guitar solo, while “Only With You,” a track reminiscent of Dennis’ efforts on So Tough, is well-arranged and generally more successful than his previous ballads. Carl’s vocal on “Only With You” is genuinely touching and unabashedly vulnerable, a quality too often mistaken by macho rock cultists for a failing of rock integrity (as if the Fleetwoods’ “Come Softly to Me” wasn’t as much rock as Eddie Cochran’s “Something Else”).

Holland’s centerpiece is a trilogy titled “California Saga,” opened by Mike Love’s jaunty “Big Sur,” a mild ode to wilderness phrased in a Beach Boy variant of Southern California’s country-folk idiom. Things get a little heavy with “The Beaks of Eagles,” which incorporates a rather ponderous recitation, but Al Jardine’s neat vocalese almost recoups the lost ground. Anyway, the recitation fits in with the saga’s overall movement, which is straight toward Jardine’s “California,” a song that incarnates every historical facet of the Beach Boys in a rhapsodic fusion of “Cool Cool Water” and “California Girls.” The opening group vocal is simply stunning, building logically into one of Mike Love’s familiar leads, while the instrumental tracks add an appropriately quaint dimension with banjo, pedal steel and harmonica following the loping bass figure. Even a jarring reference to John Steinbeck cannot prevent this song from being the Beach Boys’ best chance at an AM hit since Brian’s exquisite “Marcella” flopped ignominiously last year.

Carl Wilson’s “The Trader” also stands out among Holland’s songs. A neatly floating composition, it recalls Carl’s memorable contributions to Surf’s Up. Carl sensitively interprets Jack Rieley’s elusive lyrics, which concern Indians and rampant mercantilism from the perspective of an ecological anti-capitalism, or something of the sort. “Leaving This Town,” which rounds out the album, is a subtly realized song by Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar that wholly transcends the eclecticism that marred their work on So Tough. Chaplin’s vocal is again outstanding, and the whole mood of the song, with its rich group harmonies, aching lead vocal, and methodical synthesizer solo, would not be inappropriate to Pet Sounds; it is another one of Holland’s several highpoints.

Included with Holland is a seven inch long-playing record of a fairy tale by Brian, Mt. Vernon and Fairway. It seems an appropriate creation from the imagination that gave us “I’m Bugged at My Ol’ Man” and “Fall Breaks and Back to Winter (W. Woodpecker Symphony).” Excepting a brief appearance by Brian himself as the Pied Piper “from the far-away land of night,” the story is narrated by Jack Rieley, the group’s manager. In its recounting of an encounter with a glowing transistor radio playing divine rock, Brian’s whimsy perhaps strikes an autobiographical note. His occasional music for the tale is quirky and inspired, while the snippets of several new songs included are both frustrating and tantalizing. It hopefully does the rest of the group no disservice to remark that Brian, even in such enigmatic expressions as Mt. Vernon and Fairway, remains the Beach Boys’ most profound source of creative energy; it is Brian who sets the group’s musical standards.

The best testimony to Holland’s success is that it largely lives up to those standards. Like the finest Beach Boys’ work, Holland makes me consistently smile, as much at its occasionally unnerving simplicity of viewpoint as at its frequently ornate perfection. Although the Beach Boys may be an acquired taste, once the listener has granted them their stylistic predilections, their best records become irresistible. Their music long ago transcended facile categorization, and they now play what might as well be described simply as Beach Boy music. Unlike last year’s disappointing So Tough, Holland offers that music at its most satisfying. It is a special album.

Found this on the internet. Thought I'd share it. Rolling Stone review.
