MAN!!  All your stuff is framed!!  Do you keep them displayed?  Almost all my stuff is stored( except when I take it out to show, like here)

Many of the posters are framed behind non-reflective glass, although the one promoting 'An American Band' is still rolled up; that's a darn big poster!

The IJWMFTT poster is actually wood mounted. It literaaly stopped me in my tracks when I saw it displayed in a long-gone record store.

Yeah, I've got the American Band poster, but it came folded; I'll have to dig that one out.

Nice, very nice!

A poster which folded out to reveal those much loved CDs of the original Capitol albums, sans bonus tracks and liners.

Cool stuff, SMiLE-Holland!

My pleasure (and it's really nice to see you adding some goodies as well)

Let me continue with some Dutch promomaterial

Dutch postcard from the mid 60ies
(http://i54.tinypic.com/rwqum9.jpg)  (http://i52.tinypic.com/16c3xi9.jpg)

Standee for an early 70ies Dutch compilation album. As there were 4 volumes of this Story reissue, I expect that there were more of these standees, but I’ve never seen them.
(http://i52.tinypic.com/2rqn8gj.jpg)  (http://i55.tinypic.com/bjsc2.jpg)

To compare size: left is the album, right is the standee
(http://i51.tinypic.com/295pyzn.jpg)

The Dutch Singles Collection CD promo material (1998). I also had a huge poster of this album, but I gave that one away to a British collector during my stay there in 2004 (BWPS concert)

Oh boy, talk about taste when you gotta sell your new album with Cocoa Butter or promote your concerts with lower fat margarine....
Fascinating reminders of the time the Beach Boys reached an absolute lowpoint.
Thanks for posting !

Remember that Brother Entertainment did not have the distribution and marketing resources of Capitol, Warner's or CBS. A perfect way to let the public know that you have new product, while also getting paid to do so. Seems like a good business decision to me.

Sure but c'mon, we are talking about the Beach Boys and lower fat margarine. There must've been more tasteful ways to promote your stuff

Title: Re: Promotional Posters

The cruise was for the margarine, the soap was the for the CD. Nothing like being beachy clean during Summer In Paradise. ;)

Seems like the soap would be a good idea. Would feel dirty if I had actually bought Summer In Paradise...

Listen to SIP, are ya Nuts??

Title: Re: Promotional Posters
Post by: drbeachboy on May 01, 2011, 12:01:32 PM
I keep seeing people write here that so and so could sing the phonebook and it would sound great. Well, I kind of look at SIP in the same way. Maybe not the best songs in their catalog, but most of the singing is pretty darn good, especially Al. As with quite a few of their later albums, performance outweighed composition.

You guys have some terrific stuff. Thank you very much for sharing it here.

I have several duplicates of most of these, so I assume it was more than three years. Just checked the archives. It seems that I was a member of BBFC for 8 years. And with every renewal one would receive a sticker and a badge (and a membership card). Still had them - well hidden - in a map somewhere.

You guys need to post more buttons - there's quite a bit more - for POB and Brian's albums too.

The Making of Holland book. Back in early '73 there was a stack of them on the front counter at Record Facory. Or was it Tower, I don't remember. I asked the guy if they were freebies - he said, "Yeah, take one"!  So I grabbed a handful and he didn't say anything. I shoulda grabbed the whole stack of them!

You're missing a few buttons, but you have a couple I don't have too. Do you have the Honeys box set to go with that Honeys button? And the tour program to go with the Caesars Palace button? And the Getcha Back bumper sticker to go with the others there? And the Beach Boys license plate frame, and the....and the....and the.....it never ends.

I never did pick up the surfboard pin promo for the '93 box set. Always wanted that - I've seen it on Ebay (among other things) a few times but didn't bother. And the sunglasses that went with Stars & Stripes.

Anybody reading this (5 people) have a Salt Lake City/Amusement Parks USA promo 45 for sale? I'll bet Smile-Holland has one.

Imagination promotional booklet.

You’ll notice a few strange scans, as if these were added double. Not true. The 3rd / 4th and 17th / 18th page are transparant.

Yeah, I posted in Concerts...  the limit is 10 GB per month. Not certain if that means 10 new GB every month or total. Anyway, the current pics are "supposed" to come back live on the 16th, which is Monday, so we'll see.  If the 10 GB is total, then I need to find another free storage site. Suggestions?

weird, cuz I checked my account there after the last upload and I was still short of their limit; probably a lag in their updating my account.  Too bad, I was planning on some more stuff today...

Such as?
Tinypic is owned and operated by Photobucket( where I hangs my hat) Suppose I can try using it and see if that upsets the cart; but I don't want to lose all the pics I have on the bucket...

if you google search terms such as "sharing pictures" or "uploading pictures" you'll get a whole bunch of websites that offer this service. One might have to take a membership for some of them. I just picked the first one for which that wasn't necessary.

Tower Records had a huge box of free Holland books next to the exit at the front door.  I only took two, convinced that I needed to leave the rest of them for others to discover that The Beach Boys were still making great music in 1973.

and what the heck! while I'm doing "odds and ends" here's an invitation to a 1965 press conference, AND, while I realize they're not promotional( when has taking a thread in a different direction ever been a problem on this board) here are one side each of the BBs three pocket discs ( there's a 4th disc which is a promo only, but it doesn't have "labels"; Brian talks on one side, with a cut by Mama Cass and Tiny Tim is on the other. "Put Me In Your Pocket"):

No telling what I'll find in these boxes...

Wow, the Beach Boys on Pocket Discs.  I had totally forgotten about that format.  Basically a smaller and round implementation of the usually square shaped Eva Tone Flexi Discs that could be sent in the mail and were sometimes bound into magazines like Mad.

I recall seeing Pocket Discs around somewhere back in the day, but where were they sold?  And what did they cost?  Seems like some Pocket Discs may have even been freebies somewhere, like in a cereal box.  I do recall that such discs had a ton of surface noise when you played them.

First bgas posts photos of the BBs on PlayTapes, and now Pocket Discs.  Could there possibly be some other rare format that BB stuff was released on?  As far as more modern but defunct formats are concerned, I don't recall the BBs were ever being released on DAT or MiniDisc, which probably means that bgas has a bunch of such releases in his collection.

Thanxx!  Wish there was some other formats, cuz I'd sure like to have them...  They did make it to Minidisc with The Absolute Best Vol. 1:

Hah!  I should have known you'd probably have a BBs MiniDisc or DAT, even though I rather doubted any had ever been made.  (DAT and MD are/were both great digital recording formats.  But I only bought blank tapes/discs for both formats, although a Springsteen MiniDisc came with one of my MD recorders and a Colors of Jazz six pack came with one of my DAT recorders.)

Getting back to the Pocket Discs, do you have any idea where were they sold and how much they cost?   They were probably considerably more popular than prerecorded MDs or DATs (which isn't necessarily saying much from a sales standpoint) and did have the advantage of being able to play them on a regular record player, but I'm still thinking that not many of them were sold.  Had PlayTapes disappeared from the market when Pocket Discs were introduced, or was there an overlap of both formats being available at the same time?

All good questions, of which I mostly don't know. The Pocket discs were available via Americom( the manufacturer) vending machines and came in a generic Pocket Disc sleeve. The sleeves are somewhat rare also( I don't have any) as they were simple covers without writing, other than maybe the manufacturer's name, so most were  evidently trashed.  I think Playtapes and Pocket discs were available at the same time.
Huh! Here's probably all you need to know about Pocket discs( except for all the BBs listings):  http://www.rarebeatles.com/photospg/flexiad.htm
I take that back; THIS is really cool!     http://wn.com/1969_Americom_ABC_Records_Music_Swinger_Pocket_Disc_Record_Player
Be really neat to find one of these babies...

The American Band docu was not only released on video (and later on DVD), but also on Laserdisc.

That's cool. Never knew they made a frisbee for that.
Best Frisbees I've seen are the home-made ones done with copies of Lokking back With Love

Itīs one CD and a round paper inlay. And to be exact: this isnīt a promo item. The frisbee + CD was on sale at TCHIBO coffee shops in Germany.

By the way, did I mention there are 4 ft. x 4 ft. promo posters for "Love You" (with stryrofoam/paper backing & 4 metal ring holes) in addition to the L.A. Light and Keepin' The Summer Alive albums? Don't think there was a 4 x 4 made for MIU though.

I thought that might be the case, but so hard to tell from the pic. Have to keep my eyes open on Ebay for the darn thing; even tho I no longer collect CDs, the frisbee is cool and it's a nice package!  If only I had been in a TCHIBO when this was on sale!

Thanxx for posting these!!

No worries, I finally got around to carefully removing them from their tubes and photographing them. Must add them to my inventory database (an ongoing project).

Oddly enough, the second poster was advertised as a 1981 CBS promo poster by the seller.
