Post by: GoodVibrations33 on February 12, 2011, 02:51:33 PM
Just saw this was posted on YouTube.  Was too good to post in the YouTube thread.

Interesting that he posts two different takes!  Wonder how many takes they did?

Sorry, but that kind of sucked.  ;D It's cool that Brian just out of the blue proceeded to play a note for note perfect version of Ding Dang though.

NOTHING that brian does, ever, sucks.  You're on the wrong board buster!

A few things that Bri did that I think kind of suck:

01) "Smart Girls" and most of the unreleased Sweet Insanity album

02) "Don't You Just Know It" or whatever that sh*t is called with Jan Berry

03) Offered drugs to his daughters (and we're not talking about just grass here)

04) 3 Christmas albums!!! 1 unreleased, but what the fuuck?

05) That live rendition of "Barbara Ann" at one of Ringo's parties that makes the rounds (in fact: simply the idea of still performing that piece of sh*t song tour after tour while neglecting some of his finest work)

Anybody want to add to the list? It's a free country and not everything can always be one-sided...

The 1964 Christmas album does not suck.

The best of the bunch for sure. But to repeat the exercise? I'm just not a fan of Christmas albums personally with the exception of the Beatles flexi-discs.

I didn't mean to come off sounding too critical but it's kind of therapeutic to find faults in your idols sometimes.  ^-^

My feeling exactly on the Christmas albums.  But at least the 1964 album had something original on it.

the 64 christmas is classic.  the 70's is much much less so.  i like winter symphony though!

Actually, Brian's last Christmas album had original material as well. I thought it was pretty good, but...

The solo Christmas album is better than '64. Half of the first X-Mas disc was a suck up to pre-rock 'n roll tastes. Brian's more recent stab at it rocks

I like the 64 album better, but I do love WIRWFC....the version of "The Man With All the Toys" is vastly superior to the original.

I have to go with Runaways;
64 is a classic, no doubt, and especially great for the time period. Nobody was doing what brian did then
I like lots of the later xmasy stuff too, but I'll take the originals over the redos any day of the week.  Including TMWATT

I hate Christmas music.  But the '64 album was a huge leap forward in terms of production for Brian.  You can't get to Today and Pet Sounds without going through that one.  It was a very important step in his progression IMO.

After watching those two takes of Brian at the piano, I clicked on the next youtube video to come up, which began with the 1966 "Surf's Up" Oppenheim footage of... Brian at the piano.  The difference was a bit striking.
