Title: Favorite Beatles psychedelic era-sounding groups? Post by: roll plymouth rock on February 12, 2011, 12:24:35 PM Just wondering what are board members favorite Beatles sounding records? I know this is a vague definition....but most of the bands I'm listing have sly references to Beatles tracks on some tracks.
For me I'm digging: -The Merry-Go-Round (& Emmitt Rhodes solo stuff) -The Moon -Grapefruit -Badfinger -The Four Seasons psych album Genuine Imitation Life, does a Hey Jude thing on the title track -Harry Nilsson has some great stuff like You Can't Do That -The Flame ...and much more. Anyone else partial to any Beatles-like music I haven't listed? Title: Re: Favorite Beatles psychedelic era-sounding groups? Post by: Jason on February 12, 2011, 12:53:25 PM Laghonia

Monkees are great too. Title: Re: Favorite Beatles psychedelic era-sounding groups? Post by: donald on February 12, 2011, 07:05:24 PM Crack the Sky used to do a mean version of I am the Walrus

Also, is that Four Seasons LP good? It's been on my radar a long time but I haven't gotten it yet. Title: Re: Favorite Beatles psychedelic era-sounding groups? Post by: Aum Bop Diddit on February 14, 2011, 12:30:21 PM Dukes of the Stratosphere! And though I wouldn't exactly call them "psychedelic", let me proffer Jellyfish. Psychedelicate maybe -- anyway, it's always a good thing to listen to Jellyfish!

It's been on my radar a long time but I haven't gotten it yet. I bought that lp from a fellow vinyl collector......I could not connect with it ....perhaps had I heard it when it was new. No Pet Sounds or Sgt Pepper IMHO. Title: Re: Favorite Beatles psychedelic era-sounding groups? Post by: Mike's Beard on February 21, 2011, 09:30:17 AM When I first heard that the Four Seasons of all people had gone psychedelic (a good two years after every other band from that era) I couldn't hold back the laughter. A few trips to youtube later and I stand corrected. What I've heard is pretty good and I now have the cd on order.
Title: Re: Favorite Beatles psychedelic era-sounding groups? Post by: Dead Parrot on February 21, 2011, 10:31:47 AM How about the Butterfly era incarnation of The Hollies. Now there's a band that produced some great, and very underrated music. "King Midas In Reverse" by itself is a wonderful song, and one of the best things Graham Nash ever wrote.
Title: Re: Favorite Beatles psychedelic era-sounding groups? Post by: Mike's Beard on February 21, 2011, 11:18:37 AM King Midas is amazing. It should have been a monster hit everywhere.
Title: Re: Favorite Beatles psychedelic era-sounding groups? Post by: roll plymouth rock on February 21, 2011, 02:16:11 PM I'm a big fan of the pastiche stuff like this by Gene Clark: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGctiFIxVFE
Also really really dig the tune Holly Park by The Merry-Go-Round Cool thing about that 4 Seasons record is that it that Bob Gaudio who wrote most of it, also wrote an album for Frank Sinatra called Watertown at the same time. The whole concept of the 4 Seasons one is that the LP is this psychedelic newspaper (worth tracking down an original pressing to get the newspaper booklet-its really funny). But anyways, the two albums are inter-related and refer to each other both lyrically and in the packaging for Genuine Imitation Life Gazette there is an ad for houses in Watertown, etc, etc....pretty cool, albeit conceptually flawed (at least commercially speaking). I for one find it fascinating that pretty much every big 60s recording artist "turned on" at least for an album or single, and this is one of the more interesting examples considering its two major, fairly straight artists Title: Re: Favorite Beatles psychedelic era-sounding groups? Post by: D409 on February 21, 2011, 03:17:13 PM The Moon two-fer (Without Earth & The Moon) is definitely worth getting, Jon Stebbins' book on David Marks sold that one to me, some of it sounds like a trip straight into Pepperland ! David's guitar work on the albums is great too. As recommended above, Tomorrow and The Zombies are also excellent, as are Eclection and Trader Horne (for the period whimsy).

Would Left Banke fit under this category? The Monkees stuff during this era is great. Sagittarius has its moments. Title: Re: Favorite Beatles psychedelic era-sounding groups? Yep!! Love The Moon....two essential LP's if you ask me. They logged 600 hours of studio time or something on Without Earth Title: Re: Favorite Beatles psychedelic era-sounding groups? Title: Re: Favorite Beatles psychedelic era-sounding groups? Post by: louielouie on March 17, 2011, 12:52:01 AM Don't forget Honeybus who wrote beatlesque gems as "Story" (very "Something") or "Fresher than the sweetness in water" among many other great tunes.
Also, the Australian band "The Twilights"(according with wiki they even met the Beatles and were present at Abbey Road studios during some sessions, Penny Lane i think) they wrote some very Beatle influence stuff, i personally would recommend two songs: "Time and motion study man" and "Paternosta Row" both highly psychedelic works, the later is sort of a LSD rendition of both Penny Lane and Being for the benefit of Mr, Kite (and the Walrus too!). ...I almost left out another great band that resembles Beatles's psychedelic era , The Pretty Things and their classic "S.F. Sorrow", even the voices sounds very Lennon. :) :smokin Title: Re: Favorite Beatles psychedelic era-sounding groups? Post by: homeontherange on March 17, 2011, 04:50:03 PM The Zombies. Seconded. "Odyssey And Oracle" is an underrated masterpiece. Very Brian Wilson-esque at times Title: Re: Favorite Beatles psychedelic era-sounding groups? Holly Park is one of the most Beatles-sounding tracks not by The Beatles I've heard Title: Re: Favorite Beatles psychedelic era-sounding groups?
