Title: Al just announced a reunion show?!
Post by: Rocky on February 01, 2011, 12:56:56 PM
from his facebook:

"The Beach Boys will be performing this Saturday (Feb 5) at A Concert for America – A Tribute to Ronald Reagan. We played at President Reagan's 2nd inaugural and thought it would be appropriate to honor him for his centennial birthday celebration in light of our anniversary coming up later this year. Brian and I were both invited by Mike...more details soon on how you can watch this concert online!"

I just saw this and rushed here to find out more information!!  This seems to be so out of the blue!!  Did any of our honored guests know about this?  Andrew, did you know?  Very cool, indeed.  Hopefully, this is only just the beginning of the 50th anniversary plans!  I really hope Mike invited David Marks as well.

Not much time for preparation, it's this Saturday.

Read about 'The Beach Boys' doing some kind of gig for Reagan a few days ago and like most, just thinking it would be Mike and Bruce gig. Wow...lets see what the media have to say. Could be a way to gauge interest for something else.

A mention about Carls passing anniversary being the next day would be fitting.

Well considering they are sharing the bill, they will probably only play a handful of songs so it's not like they need to rehearse a full tour. I would guess one of them would be Hearts Were Full of Spring since they performed that at the inaugural and Mike dedicates it to Reagan still.

Now that song would take some practice. Could Al and Brian just fit in?

I guess we shall see then.  I guess Al never actually says Brian will be there, but he did word his statement cleverly to make it seem as if a reunion were taking place.

A tribute to Ronald Reagan? I would hope a reunion would be in some other context. I know Mike and Bruce (and maybe some of the others) were friendly with the Reagans, but...don't make this the big reunion.

Whole year lies before us, summer as yet untouched... and anyway, the technical 50th - release of first record - is in November. Patience.

From the Brit site.

Andrew:
I found the 1983 photo of the band and the Reagan's on the Reagan Library site. It's unfortunate that the view of Carl and Brian is blocked but at least we are all smiling!
We're playing an extremely short set Saturday night (20 minutes) but the program is two hours long.
I'm glad we were asked to be there and it will be fun to play with Al. I hope Brian is part of this event......

It makes me cringe sometimes when I think that these guys were in any capacity buddy-buddy with Reagan. Ugh.

Not to malign someone who led California into some better days as our Governor, someone who had earlier in his career helped make a star out of Bonzo, went on to become President not only of the Screen Actors Guild, but of the whole-dang U.S. of A, and eventually allow my buddy Dennis a funeral normally reserved for Admirals & the like, but let's not forget how he developed such a close relationship with The Boys...
For further research, dig out a copy of daughter Patti Davis' autobiography, "The Way I See It"; to wit:  "And, to save you page-flipping to find out who the Reagans' wild daughter claims she has slept with or been otherwise romantically entangled with: actors Timothy Hutton (short involvement) and Peter Strauss (longer); doomed Beach Boy Dennis Wilson (intermittent, crisscrossing-lives sort of thing); Eagles member Bernie Leadon (live-in); singer Kris Kristofferson (interviewed him for a TV show in his hotel room, spent the night, drove Secret Service bonkers)."

If Al shows up, neat. But pleeeeease, I hope Brian doesn't. Besides the fact that I don't want The Beach Boys to reunite for Ronald Reagan, I just think that would play Brian directly into Mike's hand. A short set? Ah, how convenient. Just time probably for the classic, scrubbed-clean, fun in the sun hits from 62-64, plus maybe "Kokomo". How about lets wait for a full fledged reunion, and do this the right way.

I think sort of a small concert like this could be good for the guys becoming okay with th "new" situation. So therefor I think Brian should be part of this. If this concert is good and everybody enjoys it then we can hope for a real reunion-concert.

I respectfully disagree with Jim. I hope Brian does show up, I hope David shows up, I even hope everybody who has ever been part of the BBs/BB band shows up. Probably not logistically practical or desirable, fine, whatever. I would just prefer that what I define as the actual core BBs only [Brian, Mike, Al, Bruce, David] would be out front carrying the vocal load. Maybe with a little discreet help from the back row. I would even love for Dennis and Carl to be present and participating by video and recording.

They say I'm a dreamer but...

On the contrary, I think it's tailor-made for Brian:

1 - 20 minute set, so five songs tops...

2 - they'll be songs he can sing in his sleep...

3 - close enough to drive to, he can be home in time for bed...

4 - big media event, good publicity...

5 - he can forget about it the next morning (if he wants to...).

Absolutely agree. My god, if it were to come true... one last (?) time hearing the vocals melt into a sum greater than its parts... I think even with Denny and Carl missing, it could be praeternaturally beautiful.

Perhaps it all depends on: have the guys more or less come to terms with their own mortality? That is, I think, a conditio sine qua non to forget any childish and petty in-fighting, and arrogant declining of taking part in an occasion that will never ever return.

I mean, if it happened, I'd be as ecstatic as anyone. But I want, for once, the band to present themselves to the public in a way befitting of all the great music they made.

I guess what I'm saying is I just hope they do a proper reunion concert type thing.

But anyways, I wonder what the set-up would be if Brian ends up being there? Would he have his protective keyboard like his solo shows? Or do they throw him to the grand piano on the side of the stage again?

Good point!

Brian or no Brian, I for one will set the alarm for 04:00 Central European Time - this will be great (I wish and hope and pray).

So, who can get closest to the set list they'll play? Here's my guess:

1. California Girls
2. Surfer Girl (Al middle eight)
3. Help Me Rhonda
4. Barbara Ann
5. Surfin' USA

I predict a very oldies heavy setlist...It'll be interesting to see how many songs they do that Al or Bruce were not involved in the orig. recording. Surfer Girl, Little Deuce Coupe, Surfin USA, Surfin Safari, etc...and apparently the guy who WAS on those songs was not invited. Not cool if you ask me.

Don, that could actually give them more publicity than the usual hits that everybody expects:

"The one-time leader of the band, Brian Wilson, who arrived late, reportedly because he had to wait for the right moment to sneak out of the house due to his wife not wanting him to perform, then launched in to a rendition of the nursery rhyme 'Shortenin' Bread'. When, after seven minutes in, he still showed no signs of finishing the repetitive groove, security dragged him of the stage. A security guard, who wish to remain anonymous, claims that Wilson shouted 'but I was just going to play 'Proud Mary' even as the doors closed behind him."

Still; Al and Bruce have sung those same songs live hundreds of times more than Dave ( it's OK to mention his name Jon)
After all, they're not doing the original recordings, they're performing them live.  :)
Apparently Mike, for all his past love for Dave, doesn't consider him an integral part of the reunion mix.
Or maybe he just forgot.

I know it probably wasn't in Brian's best interest to announce that he might play or record with The Beach Boys in 2011 while talking about BWRG, so I could see why he would say he wasn't gonna do it, but does anybody think it is possible that he actually might not play a concert with them at all, or do any kind of recording or DVD special with them?

I mean, he has shows in the fall already scheduled right? And he is recording for his Disney project. And I would assume any real solid reunion would require a bit of work, so I'm kinda nervous about the prospects of a reunion featuring Brian.

OK, I'll play along.

5. "Kiss Me, You Inflatable Doll"
4. "Let Me Go Or I'll Call The Cops"
3. "You Make Me Crazy Like Dirty Diapers On My Head"
2. "A Song About Reconstituted Meat Byproducts"
1. "Your Love Sucks Like A Vacuum Cleaner On Dope"

I don't want Brian to be there, because it's too late for me to catch a plane to California.  :lol
Good point!

Brian or no Brian, I for one will set the alarm for 04:00 Central European Time - this will be great (I wish and hope and pray).

So, who can get closest to the set list they'll play? Here's my guess:

1. California Girls
2. Surfer Girl (Al middle eight)
3. Help Me Rhonda
4. Barbara Ann
5. Surfin' USA

Replace 'Surfin' USA' with 'Long Tall Texan' for me. Complete with Mike's dancing of course.  ;D

In all seriousness: I think you hit the nail on the head with that list.

Still; Al and Bruce have sung those same songs live hundreds of times more than Dave
After all, they're not doing the original recordings, they're performing them live.  :)

I'm not saying David should be there at the exclusion of Bruce or Al. Its cool they are getting together. Not cool that David wasn't asked. I know he'd go if he was asked, and he'd play the guitar parts to those songs as well or better than anybody who will be there. Sorry, call me crazy, but I do prefer to hear the guys who were actually on the hit recordings. I think its a spiritual thing, and it makes it more fun. You can spin it all you want, but there is no good reason to leave him out.

You are correct sir; there is no good reason to leave him out of any real Beach Boys reunions.
On the other hand, when has good reason ever entered into any decisions on the Beach Boys made by Mike?

That said, as another poster pointed out, Dave didn't play at the original Reagan show; so it's not as if he's being excluded from a reunion based on that criteria.
If the Beach Boys do any Actual Reunions for their 50th, Dave should definitely be a part

They have 20 minutes, correct, I think it will be more than 5 songs.  I am guessing the setlist will be:

1. Wrinkles
2. Rock N Roll Survivor
3. PT Cruiser
4. At The Hop '85 Outtake version
5. California Energy Blues (with participation from Arnold)
6. Be True To Your Bud
7. 5 minute speech about TM
Encore
8. Problem Child (Dedicated to Patti Reagan)

Have any of you ever quit a band? I have and can tell you, it causes some problems for situations such as this.

I also wish he'd never quit!

The two guitar Carl and David attack was simply awesome.

This thread is heading towards a subject that has been covered many times before here. How about we discuss this 'Reunion Lite' for what it is. Al playing with Mikes band for 20 minutes. Maybe this will start the 50th and it will build from there.

Brian should come for the birthday cake IMO. ;D

3. Sumahama
4. Looking At Tomorrow
5, Disney Girls
6. Pitter Patter
7. Fun Fun Fun!

I agree 100% with Jon. For instance, I watched Dave play the leads to 409 and Shut Down TO THE NOTE the same as the records. To me, it's a no-brainer that he be on stage with Mike & Bruce for regular shows and upcoming reunion shows if they materialize. The guy can sing pretty damn good, too!

Yeah but BB's and quitting are part of the routine.  Al quit the band in '62, he came back in '63. Bruce quit the band in '72, he came back '78. David quit the band in '63, he was asked back in '71 but declined, and came back in '97. He quit again in '99, and he came back and played the '08 tour of the British Isles as a special guest. Brian quit, sort of, came back, sort of, quit again...and stuff...Carl quit and came back, Dennis, out and back in a couple of times. I think Mike is the ONLY Beach Boy who never quit (or was never kicked out) right? Why does David having quit stand out in your mind?

Erik, also keep in mind, when David quit in 1999 it was because he was dying of hepatitis C and was given 6 months to a year to live.  The fact he's even alive 11 years later, never mind healthy and still playing the hell out the guitar is a miracle.  So, I'm not sure its totally fair to hold his current status as 'former' Beach Boy against him considering the alternative to him leaving the road in the late 90's would have been a suicide mission.

Back to Al, though...its great he will be playing with Mike again, and finger's crossed there will be an opportunity for all 5 of them to play together sometime in the not too distant future!

I just mean because he quit and was gone for so long!

My view on David is, it's one of the major tragedies in the Beach Boys saga that David didn't stay with the band. I think if he had, the Beach Boys would've stayed more of a band band, David probably would have been all over  those records in the mid/late 60's 70's onward and the two guitar attack would have remained a core part of their sound. But then again, I would think that because my all-time favorite stuff is their first few albums, and David's guitar is a huge part of those albums.

Actually, there is a good reason to leave David out, but it's the same reason why Brian, if he was "officially invited", should not appear.

Why??  Although this performance is significant in Beach Boys history, it should not signify the official reunion of the surviving members.  If it did, any subsequent reunion performances would be significantly diluted in terms of publicity, as it would be impossible to promote a future performance as "the reunion of the Beach Boys, including Brian Wislon."

Yeah, I'd like to see David there, and obviously to a greater extent, Brian, but it doesn't make sense in that this upcoming performance should be the official first 40th anniversary reunion show.  The PR possibilities are just not there.  But, that being said, the BBs have such a dumbass history of failing to understand public relations and how come across as being hip (related, in much more than satirical terms, to "How to Speak Hip" (or is it "How to Speak Hip-Hop?"  Oops, as Mike Love said 42 years ago, "Lost my head!" -- and if you don't get that one, you really don't understand the dynamic behind The Beach Boys as a group) -  but I digress).

The biggest downside to Al's post about him performing with Mike and Bruce, and that Brian has been invited, but may not show up, is that it seems to indicate that the Beach Boys still can't come up with a cohesive plan and get it all together.  They are Windows rather than Mac.  What does that mean?  It means that the BBs and their publicity machine still don't understand how to present themselves and their incredible musical accomplishments to the media and the public.  It's a no-brainer (or is it a "no-Brianer?) that Brian should not be at the Reagan tribute performance.  The big question is, is anybody in the BB organization smart enough, with enough control, (if that is, in fact, possible in BB land), to understand how a 40th anniv BB reunion should be rolled out in 2011 and 2012?

The Rolling Stones are already talking about a 2012 tour for their 40th anniversary. Can the BBs get it together and come across as cool as the Rolling Stones?  History tells us that they can do it only with some significant cooperation and planning.  And who knows, maybe that's what they're up to now.

In any event, it's great that Al is reuniting with Mike and Bruce.  Hope the guys are not so clueless that they haven't already planned for the official reunion including Brian and Dave.  And if they haven't, they need to get off their butts and come up with a plan now.

I thought David did not want to play alongside Mike after some disgusting event a few years back.

Perhaps the elusiveness surrounding my explanation as to why David was no longer sitting in during local shows (something fans in the NY/ NJ / CT area came to expect for a few years there) has caused some to fill-in the blanks based around my partial statement that ultimately, David's feelings had been hurt.  But, time heals and David doesn't hold grudges...and hopefully there is no further cause for him to be treated with anything less than respect by the organization.  He deserves that! So, I will repeat what I've said multiple times since then: there is a big difference between him participating in a reunion-related event with all the surviving Beach Boys and being a part-time (unpaid) special guest at Mike's east coast shows.

Now, like TheOtherAnonymous said, this thread is about CURRENT plans for Saturday, not to re-hash what happened 2 years ago.  I will be playing with my Ronald Reagan paper dolls in honor of his 100th birthday!  What will you be doing?  Watching the live webcast?

You are absolutely correct, it's the upcoming 50th anniversary of both bands.  In my rambling post above I incorrectly stated it was the 40th.  This error was most likely a result of the fact that it was late at night and I'd been enjoying some Jack Daniels, coupled with the fact that it's hard to believe it's been almost half a century since the formation of The Beach Boys and The Rolling Stones.  (In addition to blaming the chronological error on the late hour and the Jack, I am also blaming the rambling nature of my post on those two factors.)

While I was attempting to be whimsical in the above statement, initially egged on by an earlier post,

"Reminds me of the funniest caption IMO from the Ego Board.
Reagan...'Which one of you f****d my daughter?'
Mike....'We all did!' "

Still and all, I had second thoughts upon awaking the next day, wondering if this wasn't in poor taste - all the while knowing that the old cowboy himself would have gotten a kick out of it!

Well, this morning I was jolted awake by this recent Sarah Palin nonsense, which I was happy to see 'young' Ron Reagan quickly shoot down.  (By the way, guess he's not so young anymore, but I've known him since he was a teenager...)
"Sarah Palin casts herself in Reagan mold, blasts Obama administration"
http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-palin-reagan-20110205,0,5876331.story
But his son, Ron Reagan, tells The Associated Press he doesn't see anything in common between his dad and the 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate, "Sarah Palin is a soap opera, basically. She's doing mostly what she does to make money and keep her name in the news," Reagan says.  "She is not a serious candidate for president and never has been!"

Finally, in a hopefully much more respectful mention of our President who would have turned 100 tomorrow, here are reviews of 2 documentaries that are about to air:  By Mary McNamara, Los Angeles Times Television Critic

Ronald Reagan would have been 100 years old Sunday, an observation that is slightly ridiculous — he won't be, of course, because he died in 2004. And yet, it's significant enough to have launched his son Ron's new book, "My Father at 100," and two new documentaries that examine the legend of both the president and his first lady.

Now I don't care if the set is just Mike Love farting into a microphone for a straight 20 minutes, anything'll be better than what's going on right now.

I like musicals as much as the next guy. Actually probably way more than the next guy, in this case. But the prerecorded cheesetrax (tm) following the old men's rambling, I don't know. I want a midget. I want Al Jardine.

Mike really isn't singing well. In some ways, not a lot different than Brian and his band: he's being supported. It's fine. One thing, it certainly seemed during Sloop John B that Mike and Al were enjoying singing together. So that's nice. And now we have Stamos, which is of course nicer still.

I'm sorry, but I just turned the damn thing off. That was awful. Al was OK but disengaged from the others, the backing musicians didn't seem into it, Mike had no energy, Bruce was negligible. I hate to make this a Brian Vs. Them thing, but when you see this compared to Brian's live show - even his poorer ones - geez, I can see why he stayed away.

A 50th anniversary tour in this state would be a sorry affair indeed. Mike looks like he's got nothing left to give. Al seemed to be having some problems with his guitar. He kept on fiddling with his amp and whenever he didn't have to sing he was facing the amp.

But overall, this was awesome. Al's presence makes the band so much more authentic. Even just hearing him say "Michael Edward!" at the end of Kokomo made it better. I saw Matt Jardine in the background, he should've played the congas when Stamos wasn't, that would've be really cool.

Some thoughts:

*It was great hearing Al in the vocal blend.
*Bruce sounded good.
*They were by far the most dignified act of the night, and a good deal more dignified than they usually are nowadays.
*They looked at least somewhat happy to be together again.
*I seriously gotta wonder what's making Mike Love's voice sound so bad - old age isn't much of a reason given how much better Brian and Al sound.

Captured it, but there were some glitches during "Rhonda" and "Fun".  I'll have to re-record them from the website's archive or YouTube and put the whole thing together.

Not a bad set - Mike has sounded out of breath the last couple of times I've seen him, but he's not a kid.  Al sounded as good as he did when I saw him with Brian a few years back.  A nice historical document, but not something I see myself listening to with any regularity.

I'll add this to the mix, if anyone's interested in burning the show to CD. It's a tracked WAV conversion from my stereo capture last night. I'll leave it up for a few days.  :)
