Title: What's your favorite BB/BW-influenced band?
Post by: punkinhead on January 03, 2011, 06:48:14 PM
Of course we have a lot of the earlier bands that want that BB sound like Sunrays, First Class, and so on. But I mean more of the modern bands that have the influence of Smile, the late 60s/early 70s era evident in their music.

Mine's definitely gotta be the Heavy Blinkers

Apparently both Marc Bolan from T.Rex and the members of Kraftwerk were big BB diehard during the 15BO-LY period.

Animal Collective without a doubt. Not sure if it's fair to call them BB influenced as there's such a mixture of stuff (Lee Scratch Perry and Grateful Dead infuence equally prominent imo), but there's a clear nod to the BBs in the harmonies, and also in the syncopation of the vocal lines to my ears. What I love about AC is that they use this influence to create genuinely forward looking, relevant, even genre-changing music so for me I hear the Beach Boys legacy been put to really exciting use i.e. influencing the most creative, avant garde pop around (Caribou, Deerhunter etc.). Compare this to so many other bands for whom sounding like a facsimile of the BB is an end in itself.

Does Brian's band qualify?

I'm thinking of making a mix full of differents bands songs that have the style of 'Til I Die/stereotypical 70's Brian ballads -you know, plodding drum machines, layered chords doing an 'interesting' keychange once in a while..... Loads of bands i've been listening to lately seem to have one.

I'm struggling to think of my favourite. A lot of bands have BB's style, but they are blips in a more varied spectrum of influence....

Maybe it's just me, but I think Best Coast's drummer has a somewhat Denny Wilson-esque playing style.

Well, it's really only just a couple of BB-influenced songs, but my choice is REM.  8)

I like Panda Bear a lot. His vocals are obviously BB influenced. His work in Animal Collective occasionally goes in BB directions too. Honestly, I feel he is one of the few that even comes close to capturing the essence of the BB work. Some other artists try, but I dont feel it.
