Title: Chynna Philips' solo albums, worth getting?
Post by: GoogaMooga on December 04, 2010, 10:16:01 AM
Hello,

So far I've only got Wilson Philips and Wilsons, but I'm thinking of adding Carnie and Chynna's solo albums to the archives. Is Chynna's solo work any good?

cheers,
GoogaMooga

Well Naked & Sacred is, as far as I know, the only solo album she has done and it's out of print (though a copy of it is easy to find through ebay or amazon). It's a bit of a mixed bag. A little more progressive than Wilson Phillips, I think it's slightly under appreciated since it does have it's moments. It has contributions from writer/producer Desmond Child (the same guy who took Aerosmith into 80s-90s top 40 and Adult Contemporary territory), if that tells you anything. Personally, there's stuff on it that I like and stuff that I don't like. I was impressed by her songwriting so it seems that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. It's not what I expected to hear, and half of it is a pleasant surprise. The other half is a bit safe and predictable. I don't know which half would be naked and which would be sacred. :)

Well, there is also "One Reason" by Chynna and Vaughan, which gets even better marks on amazon, but amazon's grading is a bit inflated. 4 and a half stars!?

Well, probably because they grade things on what they buyer thinks. So probably when Chynna and a few members of her family bought it, they gave it rave reviews ;)

I wasn't impressed with it.
