Beach Boys Today
J Hendriix Experience Smash Hits

Goldmine is a magazine to which you must subscribe, if yu want to find it, in my experience. I haven't found any place that stocks it anymore;  more and more dealers are dropping the service that carries it, at least here.
Not certain why...

I too have always loved the Moody Blues. To me they were a true "band" and came off as adults. I have had the good fortune to have seen them live throughout their long career. From the old days at Fillmore West and Winterland to just last year. They still have their voices. I do miss Ray Thomas. I think they still have one more great album in them.

Well, here in the UK there's something of a distribution monopoly in the magazine field, with WHSmith handling just about everything. As more supermarkets sell magazines, and chainstore newsagents dominate the High Street, small circulation specialist titles are being axed from their shelves in favour of large circulation titles that generate a greater income from the same amount of shelf space.

Not only that but magazine publishers now have to pay supermarkets and big-chain newsagents of they want their titles to have prominence on the shelves. That, or have exclusive offers for these big retailers.

That's a gamble in itself - publishers can't make much if any profit if they're shelling out for the privilege of selling their product (remember the vendor gets this money on top of their cut of the cover price); and if they do a special offer for one big retailer – say, an exclusive cover mounted gift – then readers might buy it there for a couple of months, then find that store's dropped it in favour of another magazine's short-term offer.

But when readers go back to the small independent retailer for their favourite mag, they find it's been dropped there too because the big stores had stolen the trade.

However, once we all subscribe to a title, at a vastly discounted rate from the publisher, there's no incentive for any retailer, large or small, to stock the title. At which stage the publisher can charge what they like for the title as it's only available from them.

It's a number of vicious circles eating away at each other.

A lot of paperboys will be out of work in the near future!

I agree! They're in my top three favorite groups.

I grew up on The Moody Blues before The Beach Boys and they still remain in my Top 5 bands. Days.....is an excellent album but I've always preferred To Our Children's Children's Children and In Search of the Lost Chord

And, to link with an earlier thread, I'll be seeing Justin Hayward in a couple of weeks in War of the Worlds-can't wait!

I thought Jef's answers were pretty good. He's actually performed with The Moody Blues, which I thought was pretty cool. Jeff's is the fourth 10 Albums list that I've done for Goldmine, and it never fails to surprise me when I get the answers.

Be sure and check out David Marks, Micky Dolenz and Paul Von Mertens lists too. All good stuff.

I'd like to see Denny Laine rejoin the Moodies.

It sometimes takes Goldmine about one month to post their published content online.

Here are two links:
David Marks (http://www.goldminemag.com/article/10-albums-that-changed-david-marks-life)
Micky Dolenz (http://www.goldminemag.com/article/micky-dolenz-the-music-that-changed-my-life)

Paul Von Mertens was published in the November 19, 2010 • Issue 791 with Ron Wood on the cover.

Here's Paul's list:
Sonny Rollins: Saxophone Colossus
Nancy Wilson: Cannonball Adderly
The Clash: London Calling
Van Morrison: Veedon Fleece and/or Astral Weeks
Bruce Springsteen: Born To Run
The Beach Boys: Pet Sounds
Miles Davis: Bitches Brew, Kind of Blue and In a Silent Way — Mertens says, "I can't pick one Miles record; these three changed jazz forever."
J.S. Bach: Suites for Solo Cello, Pierre Fournier
Johannes Brahams: Symphony No. 3 Claudio Abbado, Berlin Philharmonic
Olivier Messiaen: Quartet for the End of Time and ArvoPart: Passio

Highly doubt that'll ever happen.
