I remember hearing a version where the bridge was different and I was wondering if I dreamed this lol

The only other version I know of had vocals recorded by Redwood which had a different bridge and an excellent fade

If there other versions that I'm not aware of, here is the best place to find out!

The released version, the Hawthorne CA version (different bridge, acapella fade), a 'acapella' version, the new Stereo mix on Summer Love Songs and Redwood's original.

There are also two incomplete test mixes on bootlegs, as well as a rehearsal, vocal overdubs, and mixdown sessions.

Was it ever recorded or even played live by the Boys? Say in the 70s? Would love to hear that!
Just checked Eric's excellent site to find out that I actually heard Brian did it at The RFH on the first Smile night. I was probably too busy sorting out my pen and paper to notice!!

Brian did it once in 2002 at the Carl benefit, and then he played it at the RFH for the first six nights in February 2004. It hasn't been touched since then, and probably for good reason - Brian had trouble hitting the notes, even with Jeff backing him up.

There's also a track-only instrumental version.

And a cappella mixes.

Something also tells me I remember hearing from someone who had been at the show that Brian did the song in California, well before Smile and more like 2003-2004??? I really can't recall, but the big news at the time was that he and the band did songs like Cabinessence live  (a radical choice then, again, before BWPS was even a thought...), and I think "Time To Get Alone" was on the setlist. Maybe I'm confusing it with something else...

I was talking specifically about a few pre-BWPS shows in the Los Angeles area that I think the late Bob Hanes had traveled south to see, and someone else who was there at that show/shows mentioned Time To Get Alone as a highlight from the show/shows, and maybe even heard it at a pre-show soundcheck, again I just don't remember. I was just trying to confirm.

Pre-BWPS shows (i.e. post announcement of Smile being performed in spring 2003):

I think pre-BWPS would include any show Brian did from '99 to '04.

I stand corrected - he did do it pre-2/20/04. Once, at the 5th CWF benefit show, 10/6/02, with Justyn Wilson guesting.

The concert was interrupted midway through when the teleprompter cut out, much to Brian's amusement.

The specific show I'm thinking of - thanks to some archives for reminding me - was at The Roxy in May 2002. The drawing card was that Brian and band would be doing songs rarely if ever performed live, and the songs included Time To Get Alone, Busy Doin Nothing, Meant For You, and Cabinessence/Wonderful which was a blockbuster inclusion to any BW set at that time.

May 2002 - in Los Angeles...if anyone can confirm with a setlist that was the show in my mind.

Pre-show publicity taken from the BW website advertising the May 2002 "warm-up" Roxy gigs. It was apparently planned - I'm not making it up or trying to agitate here - but obviously it wasn't played at those shows. That's not saying the band didn't have TTGA worked up for the shows...or that tour...that's all...wonder if any "rehearsal" tapes exist? :)

Brian's website has been known to make outrageous announcements as to what would be performed on a certain night. Before the Carl benefit in 2003, they were saying that they were going to play How Could We Still Be Dancin', except we got Soul Searchin' and City Blues instead. Let's say that the jumping too far and pulling back thing has been perfected to the level of artful science on that site. :)

That might be true but in this case the band did play 4 of the 5 specific songs the website announced they would play at the shows. The fact it was mentioned in April 2002 shows they were planning to add the song to the setlist and rehearsing it - the fact that it wasn't played until October and than sporadically after that speaks volumes about the complexity and difficulty of the song. Of course, you can ask is it any more complex of an arrangement than Cabinessence?
