Title: How many versions of time to get alone are floating around? Post by: junkbondtrader on November 23, 2010, 06:23:08 AM different mixes, takes, edits, etc..
I remember hearing a version where the bridge was different and I was wondering if I dreamed this lol Title: Re: How many versions of time to get alone are floating around? Post by: Cliff1000uk on November 23, 2010, 06:43:10 AM Hey!
The only other version I know of had vocals recorded by Redwood which had a different bridge and an excellent fade If there other versions that I'm not aware of, here is the best place to find out! Cheers Title: Re: How many versions of time to get alone are floating around? Post by: hypehat on November 23, 2010, 06:51:50 AM The released version, the Hawthorne CA version (different bridge, acapella fade), a 'acapella' version, the new Stereo mix on Summer Love Songs and Redwood's original.
Title: Re: How many versions of time to get alone are floating around? Post by: Jason on November 23, 2010, 07:03:04 AM There are also two incomplete test mixes on bootlegs, as well as a rehearsal, vocal overdubs, and mixdown sessions.
Title: Re: How many versions of time to get alone are floating around? Post by: Cliff1000uk on November 23, 2010, 07:38:46 AM Sorry-forgot about the Hawthorne CA version
Was it ever recorded or even played live by the Boys? Say in the 70s? Would love to hear that! Just checked Eric's excellent site to find out that I actually heard Brian did it at The RFH on the first Smile night. I was probably too busy sorting out my pen and paper to notice!! Title: Re: How many versions of time to get alone are floating around? Post by: Jason on November 23, 2010, 07:53:42 AM Brian did it once in 2002 at the Carl benefit, and then he played it at the RFH for the first six nights in February 2004. It hasn't been touched since then, and probably for good reason - Brian had trouble hitting the notes, even with Jeff backing him up.
Title: Re: How many versions of time to get alone are floating around? Post by: PongHit on November 23, 2010, 08:41:54 AM There's also a track-only instrumental version.
Title: Re: How many versions of time to get alone are floating around? Post by: Jason on November 23, 2010, 09:09:36 AM And a cappella mixes.
Title: Re: How many versions of time to get alone are floating around? Post by: guitarfool2002 on November 23, 2010, 09:13:26 AM Something also tells me I remember hearing from someone who had been at the show that Brian did the song in California, well before Smile and more like 2003-2004??? I really can't recall, but the big news at the time was that he and the band did songs like Cabinessence live (a radical choice then, again, before BWPS was even a thought...), and I think "Time To Get Alone" was on the setlist. Maybe I'm confusing it with something else...
Brilliant song, one of my absolute favorites. Title: Re: How many versions of time to get alone are floating around? Post by: Jason on November 23, 2010, 09:31:58 AM I urge you to READ this...

It hasn't been touched since then, and probably for good reason - Brian had trouble hitting the notes, even with Jeff backing him up. And in addition, Brian played it on all the gigs from 2/20/04 to 3/14/04. Then it was gone for good. Title: Re: How many versions of time to get alone are floating around? Post by: guitarfool2002 on November 23, 2010, 09:39:24 AM I urge you to READ this... READ? Where are my reading glasses, dammit.... ;D I was talking specifically about a few pre-BWPS shows in the Los Angeles area that I think the late Bob Hanes had traveled south to see, and someone else who was there at that show/shows mentioned Time To Get Alone as a highlight from the show/shows, and maybe even heard it at a pre-show soundcheck, again I just don't remember. I was just trying to confirm. Title: Re: How many versions of time to get alone are floating around? Post by: Andrew G. Pre-BWPS shows (i.e. post announcement of Smile being performed in spring 2003): 2003 6/12 - Ontario, Canada [cancelled due to SARS oubreak] 6/14 - Boston, MA 6/16 - New York, NY 6/18 - Newark, NJ [cancelled] 10/16 - 6th Carl Wilson Event 2004 1/30 - Edmonton, Canada Number of times "TTGA" was performed - 0 Title: Re: How many versions of time to get alone are floating around? Post by: LostArt on November 23, 2010, 09:56:01 AM I think pre-BWPS would include any show Brian did from '99 to '04.
Title: Re: How many versions of time to get alone are floating around? Post by: Andrew G. Doe on November 23, 2010, 10:17:09 AM I stand corrected - he did do it pre-2/20/04. Once, at the 5th CWF benefit show, 10/6/02, with Justyn Wilson guesting.
Title: Re: How many versions of time to get alone are floating around? Post by: Jason on November 23, 2010, 10:34:23 AM Good gig, that one. Check out the setlist!
http://members.tripod.com/~fun_fun_fun/10-6-02.html The concert was interrupted midway through when the teleprompter cut out, much to Brian's amusement. Title: Re: How many versions of time to get alone are floating around? Post by: guitarfool2002 on November 23, 2010, 10:53:57 AM The specific show I'm thinking of - thanks to some archives for reminding me - was at The Roxy in May 2002. The drawing card was that Brian and band would be doing songs rarely if ever performed live, and the songs included Time To Get Alone, Busy Doin Nothing, Meant For You, and Cabinessence/Wonderful which was a blockbuster inclusion to any BW set at that time.
May 2002 - in Los Angeles...if anyone can confirm with a setlist that was the show in my mind. Title: Re: How many versions of time to get alone are floating around? You want us to sing it in five-part harmony? :) http://members.tripod.com/~fun_fun_fun/5-11-02a.html http://members.tripod.com/~fun_fun_fun/5-11-02b.html Title: Re: How many versions of time to get alone are floating around? Post by: guitarfool2002 on November 23, 2010, 11:15:17 AM "You'll see Brian and his band play many of Brian's classic songs, as well as work-in-progress performances of never-heard-live songs including "Wonderful," "Cabinessence," "The Night Was So Young," "Time To Get Alone" and"Busy Doin' Nothing."" Pre-show publicity taken from the BW website advertising the May 2002 "warm-up" Roxy gigs. It was apparently planned - I'm not making it up or trying to agitate here - but obviously it wasn't played at those shows. That's not saying the band didn't have TTGA worked up for the shows...or that tour...that's all...wonder if any "rehearsal" tapes exist? :) Title: Re: How many versions of time to get alone are floating around? Post by: Jason on November 23, 2010, 11:23:03 AM Brian's website has been known to make outrageous announcements as to what would be performed on a certain night. Before the Carl benefit in 2003, they were saying that they were going to play How Could We Still Be Dancin', except we got Soul Searchin' and City Blues instead. Let's say that the jumping too far and pulling back thing has been perfected to the level of artful science on that site. :)

Let's say that the jumping too far and pulling back thing has been perfected to the level of artful science on that site. :) That might be true but in this case the band did play 4 of the 5 specific songs the website announced they would play at the shows. The fact it was mentioned in April 2002 shows they were planning to add the song to the setlist and rehearsing it - the fact that it wasn't played until October and than sporadically after that speaks volumes about the complexity and difficulty of the song. Of course, you can ask is it any more complex of an arrangement than Cabinessence? "4 out of 5 ain't bad..." (sung in 5 part harmony with Meat Loaf taking the lead) Title: Re: How many versions of time to get alone are floating around? Post by: willy on November 24, 2010, 07:55:04 AM The new Stereo mix on Summer Love Songs.... wtf happened to the "Deep and wide..." ....it's been remixed to sound shallow and narrow. >:(
