Title: With Me Tonight (Fast Version)
Post by: RollPlymouthRock on October 31, 2010, 02:46:38 PM

What's the story behind this? Is it as the video's author suggest originally intended to be a part of Heroes and Villains? or was it always meant to be a standalone song? in this case at a speed than the version that appeared on smiley smile? Thank you in advance for your time.

Erm, I thought it was. which is why I said so.... Though I can't for the life of me think where I got that info now  ??? Maybe not that specific version, but the tune might have come about during a session for H&V. If anyone comes up with an answer, the video might change.....

Two other versions of With Me Tonight were recorded during the Smile Sessions (well, maybe three, one unbooted so far but heard by Andrew) and were both too long to be part of Heroes.  The "fast" version that was released on Hawthorne has a bass line similar to the Vegetables bass line and it has been speculated that this version was recorded in April during the Vegetables sessions and was under consideration as a "section" of Vegetables.  the longer versions were most likely attempted as a single B side (to replace wonderful?)  or as a new track for Smile.

the Hawthorne version fits perfectly with the "eat a lot, sleep a lot" section of Vegetables.

It also follows the same chord progression as the "Vegetables" Verse

Start listening around the 2:40 mark.

Sounds like it was intended as a fade to me.

"Fade to Part 1" of Vegetables perhaps?  We already have the officially titled "Fade to Vegetables" for the final fade.  Could also be a middle piece/"middle eight" ('bridge to carrots?).

We need the tapebox info, if any. Who could have that information? Who, who, who?

I think that a lot of the SMiLE songs started as segments of H&V, whether in the very early stages of the album (when Brian and VDP were initially banging the songs out on Brian's piano) or later on.
