"Only more damage can arise from this temporary, fleeting image of success known as The Beach Boys." Title: Re: The Murry Quote Topic Post by: PongHit on October 20, 2010, 12:21:44 PM A couple years ago, a crazy friend of mine became somewhat obsessed with the Murry/Rhonda session, & broke Murry's quotes into categories:
Yes: Go on that kick. That's what we want. No: No, no, no Forget it. Loosening Up: Loosen up a little. Loosen up a little more. Loosen up, sweetie. Loosen up and just forget it. Loosen up, be happy. You're too tense. Have the guys loosen up. Loosen up and we got it. Miscellaneous Advise: Soften it a little. Soft and sexy. You're so tight I can't believe it. Music (specific) Advise: You're missing all the lows. Come on in closer on that mic. Don't flat anymore. Listen, syncopate it a little. Sing it. Syncopate it a little and then punch. Sing From Your Heart(s) Quit screaming and start singing from your hearts. Questions: OK fellas, you got any guts? You guy's think you're good? Insulted: C'mon, now don't insult me. This is absolutely insulting. You don't appreciate the good help I've given you. Apology: I'm sorry to yell. I'm sorry I'm yelling. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, dear. Wisdom: Now listen, let me tell you something... Don't ever forget. Honesty is the best policy. Sing from your heart. That's all you need. The rest is easy. Happy, happy, that's all we need. Let's fight for success. As a team we're unbeatable. Forget who you are. We need the honest projection that we used to have. When you guys get too much money you start thinking you're gonna make everything a hit. When you guys get so big that you can't sing from your hearts you're going down hill. If you want to fight for success I'll go all out. First of all, you should never have all these people here. Second of all, you forget to sing from your heart. Son, success never comes easy, you have to fight for it all the time. And son, remember this... you always have to fight for success Success never comes from a phony singing for money. You can't compete with the brains that are trying to hurt you. You can only fight from the bottom of your hearts. But you know why, because you guys think you have an image. Positive Reinforcement: You're doing great. You're doing a great job. You've got a wonderful tune here. You have a beautiful tune here. Congratulations. You're a genius. This is gonna be a helluva hit. Fed Up: But I can't go on if you're not going to listen to an intelligent man. I try to give you tips and you think because you have a few hits you got it made. OK, I can't do it. Title: Re: The Murry Quote Topic Post by: PongHit on October 20, 2010, 12:24:04 PM "I have 3,000 words to say."

Title: Re: The Murry Quote Topic Post by: The Heartical Don on October 22, 2010, 03:03:03 AM "Well come on in and sing it, you've been loafing for two hours." :lol I don't know what it is with Murry... that slurred voice... his repeats... his 'advice'... combined with his abusive personality... As someone said here: he sure is fascinating. The vicious nature of the man wasn't perceived by many others, IIRC. Brian's acquaintances repeatedly described him as a weird or even goofy personality, but not as a tyrant. But they must've surely seen bruises and other symptoms of hurt? A deep human mystery: bullying and attacking one's own. I think it's a mark of a severe lack of self-esteem. Title: Re: The Murry Quote Topic Post by: donald on October 22, 2010, 07:20:27 AM "OK. Title: Re: The Murry Quote Topic Post by: Alex on October 23, 2010, 09:55:22 AM How'd it get to be that me, Murry Wilson, father of the Beach Boys, fired by my own flesh and blood, just because I hit Brian on the head with a mixing board?!
I'll make a new band, who'll be better than the Beach Boys. And they better be, or I'll pound their faces into hamburger meat!! No offense boys, but you sound like a wino's death fart echoing through a sewer pipe! We'll have fun in the sun or I'm gonna get my belt! He lived in my balls! Stop! You're giving me ear cancer! Well he wasn't such a genius when he was wetting his bed at age 14! I once smothered Brian with steak sauce and threatened to feed him to a wolverine because he forgot to say please! That's why he's the man he is today! Title: Re: The Murry Quote Topic Post by: Mr. Cohen on October 23, 2010, 10:42:59 AM Quote Brian's acquaintances repeatedly described him as a weird or even goofy personality, but not as a tyrant. Right, let's not forget how he took Brian to see The Four Freshman (he even managed to arrange for Brian to be able to meet them), bought Brian a car, bought Dennis a surfboard, purchased a guitar and lessons for Carl. He even told the boys about sex late one night when they were young teenagers! The guy tried to be a good dad, and look at how hard he worked to break the BBs into the industry. He just couldn't control the bad aspects of his personality. If you ever read about Murry's childhood, you'll understand why. His dad was far worse than Murry ever was. Most folks swear they'd never want to do it, and fall right into the gap. Title: Re: The Murry Quote Topic Post by: Myk Luhv on October 23, 2010, 05:43:52 PM I like how people seem to think material provisions somehow serve to negate the physical and emotional abuse that Murry seemingly relentlessly subjected his kids to whenever he could.

He would admit as much himself, and his own way of dealing with the step of becoming a parent is enough to suggest this - Brian's fear of becoming a parent like Murry made him a different sort of bad father to his daughters. Agree. It is, as Dave Marsh noted somewhere, a basic human mystery. I think it is located in the animal part of the human brain. One can rationalize endlessly, but even the best intentions get overruled by instinctive violence eventually. Sexual abuse of children by their parent(s) is a notorious example, it is transferred across the generations. Perhaps it's a sign of a split personality. I wrote above that I think that people like Murry, and his dad Bud, are basically very insecure folks. They make up for that by being both enormously ambitious and very aggressive. That is why Murry both created the Beach Boys and destroyed the mental sanity of its most talented member. Title: Re: The Murry Quote Topic Post by: Ian on October 24, 2010, 10:15:33 AM Funny thing about Murry is that despite being such a pain to be around (he made the first Australian tour a real drag allegedly) they allowed him to tag along on later important trips. Murry was with them in Paris in Nov 66 (he ran the press conference that the BBs chose to skip) and in Australia in Apr-May 1970 (He even gave interviews to Sydney papers!). Not a shy man that is for sure.

I thought he witnessed a fist fight between Murry and Dennis that was broken up by Elmer, and was on the receiving end of more than one noogie ? Yes, Murry was one of countless people he witnessed Dennis fist fight with, that is true. But David was on the receiving end of a couple of broken noses from his own father, who he doesn't consider a categorical tyrant either, so a few noogies aren't going to have him screaming "abuse!" Of course he wishes Murry hadn't swindled and erased him from BB history and even more hurtful than that was the betrayal at the hands of someone he considered (for good or bad) a 2nd father....so naturally he has mixed feelings about the guy. But you should be careful...you took some quotes that were edited by other people to fit their storyline and pieced together what you THOUGHT David might feel like and presented it as "I know a guy who feels..." which leaves readers believing (falsely) that you have some sort of insider's insight into the way David feels about something as complex as Murry Wilson. That's how these myths get spread.... By the way, did you see the new BW Songwriter's dvd where they play audio from an argument between them in the studio and David says Murry was right? Title: Re: The Murry Quote Topic Post by: TdHabib on October 24, 2010, 10:57:46 AM I always loved Desper's description of Murry as a freight train in a public library.
