Title: Blondie Chaplin
Post by: Menace Wilson on October 19, 2010, 09:56:03 AM
The guy...

...sailed to London from South Africa at 16
gigged around London with The Flame
moved to LA, recorded and toured with the Beach Boys
recorded and toured with The Band after Richard Manuel's death
toured with Rick Danko and members of The Byrds
moved to NYC, recorded and toured with David Johanson (New York Dolls)
recorded and toured with the Rolling Stones

This guy needs to write a book!

...and just played a solo gig in Dresden, Germany, on October 9th in front of only 40 listeners.
Very sad!

Did he do Sail On Sailor?

He didn't just "record and tour" with the Beach Boys.  He was a Beach Boy -- and contributed a lot to two of their all-time classic albums, as well as countless ass-kicking live shows!

You also forget to mention that he was a key member of The Flame, an awesome rock group in its own right.

No, just his own compositions plus a cover of "Little Red Rooster".

I did mention The Flame, but correction about the BBs duly noted!

The format of the radio show is obnoxious imo, but it's great to hear Blondie interviewed here:

I've always figured for his talent Blondie should be bigger than he actually is.

I don't feel that sorry for Blondie -- he has played to big crowds and small crowds...but he's a working musician.  Not too many can say that unfortunately!

The BBs  circa Holland will always be special to me -- seeing them in '72 and '73 was beyond epiphany.  And Blondie (and Ricky) was a huge part of that.  His situation with the Stones reminds me a bit of Nils Lofgren with Springsteen or Peter Hosapple of the dBs backing up REM, though frankly I consider those two guys far better songwriters.  But a handsome payday for all I trust.

After seeing him with the Stones on the last couple of tours I must say he gives me the creeps.

He does seem to be morphing into Keef...

Speaking of Blondie,,I'm still unclear on why Blondie was freaking out onstage at Winterland in San Francisco in 1973 or '74. He didn't want to go on and had to  be restrained. I remember Al looking quite distressed. When they came again the following year (San Francisco Civic) no more Blondie but they all had on Striped shirts!

I think there was some kind of backstage altercation with someone (Bill Graham ?): just over a month later he quit after a post-gig fist fight with Steve Love at Madison Square Garden (12/19/73).

Blondies great but I think he is too talented to be just a backup player.

Do we know who won said fist-fight? Hope it was Blondie!
