That Wild Honey stained glass, is that now in Marilyn's home to this day? Did I just read that somewhere?

When we went there in December 1976, on our honeymoon, we got the grand tour by the nicest guys who took their time to do it.  Not that we expected it on a Friday late afternoon, they told us none of the guys were around.

Wow-if you had your sh*t together, you could get a 6 hour block from 8 to 2 and record your whole album for 125 bucks. Not bad is an understatement!

One source I read that it's in Marilyn Rutherford's house, and another I read that Jeff Foskett has possession of it.  Maybe one gave it to the other I don't know, but it was originally mounted over the front door at 10452 Bellagio Rd.  I stared it down one afternoon in June, 1976.

There's kinduva picture of the stained glass window at Brother in the May, 1976 "Crawdaddy" magazine with the Timothy White article. Ed Roach could probably describe it better than I.

On the step (sidewalk) leading into the back door of Brother Records, there was a gold record of "Surfin' U.S.A". embedded in it.

I strongly suspect you're right, Andrew. That's one hell of a markup on 2" tape, though. The 1976 Ampex catalogue quotes $75 for a 2400ft (10.5") reel. The cost of quarter-inch, again assuming a 10.5" reel, is not much above list price, however.

If there was anyone offering a six hour block for $125 in 1977, the owner of that studio must have been rolling in benjamins and using the studio income for gas...

The owners were Carl and Dennis and they sold it in 1978.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure you're right. I was gonna say, even back in '77, that'd be damn cheap!

According to Billboard, these were the hourly rates in summer 1974, when the place opened for commercial use:

8am-4pm - $100
4pm-8am - $110
Saturday - $115
Sunday/holidays - $120

The Beach Boys did not record any music at Brother Records. The building was actually a haven for Brian and Dennis and their friends to hide from Landy and Marilyn for the purpose of doing drugs. Pretty sure they were dealing too, because traffic was always heavy on 5th street during that period, with people coming and going at all hours. The building was well-disguised, and had no visible signs or indications of its inhabitants.

What an absurd statement!  "15 Big Ones" was recorded at Brother.  I've got pictures up here somewhere of Mike & Brian working in the studio, and pictures of Mike & Al mixing in the control room.  What a strange thing to say...

I'm quite sure he's being facetious although the climate in the Beach Boys world doesn't discount the possibility of controlled substances being used in the studio as well...

Ed, that was a little absurd. ;D  I just wanted to see if anybody was reading my posts in between the ones concerning studio recording costs and all. Actually, I was waiting for you or Stebbins to show up to comment on the studio itself, because you've commented on it before on another bored. Knew I'd get somebody's attention.  :P

I know for a fact The Beach Boys were using the studio for recording - I saw Dennis' motorcycle parked out back when I was there in '76, plus I read articles in a few magazines around that time talking about it. I believe everything I read.  As far as drugs being used in the studio though...............no futher comment............

Is Brother studio still in Santa Monica?

The Beach Boys don't record there anymore.

Nope - Ed can give you chapter & verse, but basically, it's something like an underground parking lot now.

It's condos, more or less.  Great location.

Right around the corner from TrueTone music (the best music store in L.A.), so that's kind of cool.

COMMENT TO WILLY: 

The Wild Honey Stained Glass was actually on each side of the front enterence door to Carl & Annie's home when they lived on Coldwater Canyon Drive. At least that is where the glass was the last time I saw the two panels.  ~Stephen W. Desper

So there were TWO Wild Honey stained glass windows - one at Brian's and one at Carl's house? Or was the one over Brian's door later transferred to Carl's house?  Because up at Brian's house where you recorded, Steve, you may remember one being there......

So what's happened to it now? Guess it's still in the house, so i hope whoever owns that isn't thinking of renovating....
