Title: My Solution
Post by: Jay on October 09, 2010, 08:46:34 PM
Can anybody help me with trying to figure out the lyrics to My Solution? I don't mean the narration, but the lyrics buried underneath.

This is the first verse (I'm fairly confident it's correct):

I dropped my dog in my solution,
He looked so different in my solution.
I knew I'd found my peace solution,
My instant aid to evolution.

After that it gets pretty indecipherable for me.  The only other tidbits that spring to mind just from memory are "what have I done with my solution" (repeated by the group before the instrumental break) and "I met a damsel outside my castle."

That's pretty much what I could come up with. Is there a version available without the narration?

Top of my head:

What have I done (
With my solution
He walked so gently
He would harm no-one

Success had come
To my solution
My instant aid
To evolution

What have I done
With my soluuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

Damsel
Outside my castle
She looked so fair
Her dark brown hair

What have I done
With my solution
My instant aid
To evolution

[let's pick that one up later]

In its own simple, quite way, that's actually pretty badass. Whose lyrics were they?

Mike & Van Dyke. I hear Jack helped too.

Thanks a bunch!  ;D BY the way, who does that insanely high note?

My Solution is such a whacked out, batshit crazy song and probably the weirdest song be it released or unreleased that the Beach Boys have ever done but I love it, favourite part is from  1:30 - 1:50 which is the 'What have I done? With my soluuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu....' bit.

It is Brian doing the narration right? I'd love to see this song on a future rarities compilation, if only to show how downright weird/inventive Brian could be.

WHAT?! I just realized I have never known who wrote it until now.  That's....certainly a weird combination to say the least!

For a long time, I thought it was Mike doing the talking. Fun fact: The first time I ever heard this song, it was real late at night, and I was the only person in the house awake. Bad idea.  ;D

I heard the original lyrics were by Tandyn Almer and Tony Asher.

That long sustained note on the synth just before the last verse is the most evil, creepiest thing I have ever heard. And I'm more than a tad surprised that the lyrics were a collaboration between Mike and Van, who'd have thunk it?

I've always assumed that the insanely high note (off the top of my head, I think it's a G) was Brian, although I'm not sure who else was at the session so I suppose I could be wrong.

The lyrics are indeed pretty badass.  Just the idea of Mike and Van Dyke collaborating is incredibly cool.

Ah Ha Ha Ha Ha!!  You kept a straight face and they fell for it!  I think I'll try that soon and see what happens.  ;D

Yeah, I can imagine Mike Love, Van Dyke Parks, and Jack Rieley writing together.  ::)

Nice one AGD!  Your reputation around here is such that I didn't even think twice when you said that.

Now that we have that cleared up, I always assumed that Brian wrote all the lyrics.

That's the general assumption, although the way he stumbles towards the end leads me to believe he might be making up the 'lead' on the spot.

it'd be really fantastic to get something like this on a future rarities comp (remastered and all), but also, interview the remaining Beach Boys about this and other rarities for the liner notes or even better, an accompaniment book...and add quotes from Dennis/Carl about the particular tracks, much like the Beatles Anthology book.  ;D

The whole time Brian was supposedly "in bed", he was actually working on creating an alternative source of energy from inorganic materials.  Unfortunately, the fumes from some of the chemicals he was working on had unfortunate side effects: weight gain, physical damage to the vocal chords, and temporary mental impairment. Rather than face ridicule from the scientific community, it was agreed upon by Brian and his friends and associates to cover up what had happened with a fake story that involved depression and drugs.

Problem with that, fine idea that it is, is that while The Beatles recorded the vast percentage of their material at one studio, where it was documented in triplicate, The Beach Boys recorded at studios all over the place (different continents, even) and sometimes did the documentation retroactively, occaisionally getting it spectacularly wrong with, for instance, some of the Holland sessions.

find the picture from the session, then you'll really enjoy it..especially Brian's make-up and strange look he's giving to the rest of the guys. If I'm thinking right, I think some of the other guys are wearing masks, 1 or 2 that appeared on the IJWMFTT/Pet Sounds promo video.

Billy Hinsche is wearing the pullover rubber mask in the photo. Dennis skipped the session to go, um, trick or treating.

That was the long held belief until Billy suggested that it was actually Carli Munoz.

Who all sings on the 1970 version? Brian, obviously, and I hear Bruce throughout. I think folks explicitly say Dennis isn't on it, but I swear that's him singing prominently on the "Success had come" parts.
