I seem to recall once seeing a brief clip of the BBs performing Good Timin’ live on some TV show around ‘79/80 with Dennis on lead vocals. This may have been on youtube, or in a documentary or something.

Did I hallucinate this, or did this performance actually happen?

I can’t seem to find any such clip on youtube or any reference to it anywhere.

I don't think you saw it, but you did hear it on a bootleg. Its audio of the BB's at Radio City Music Hall in '79 when Dennis, for an unknown reason sang lead on "Good Timin'"...he says "because Carl chickened out." If you can produce video of that show or any of Dennis singing that song I'll be happy to be proved wrong...but I doubt that's gonna happen. The only known video of Dennis singing lead from that year would be  his performance of "Angel Come Home" on the Midnight Special TV show.

Dennis sang it on The Midnight Special. I haven't seen it, but I would assume that the film still exists. I've heard the audio from it.

I've seen one where Mike sings the lead, also. Also seen footage where Brian sings the lead.

I could've sworn though I've actually SEEN footage of Dennis singing it, but might be my mind playing tricks on me. Which one sang lead for the Easter Seals telethon in '79, again? Mike, wasn't it?

They didn't perform it on the Midnight Special, or at least it didn't air...the songs that did air in the orig. 1979 MS episode are Good Vibrations, Here Comes The Night, Surfin USA, Angel Come Home, Lady Lynda and R&R Music..

What show was it then? Dennis screwed up the words horribly. Maybe it was from Midnight Special, but it didn't air and the track somehow got bootlegged.

I could've sworn that the clip I saw was from Midnight Special as well.

Is it possible it was an unaired song that leaked out, or maybe they played Midnight Special a 2nd time that year?

Speaking of screwing up the words...have a look on youtube for Carl doing "Good Timin'" at the July 4, 1980 concert blowing the first verse and making it slightly risque ("All us people...sharing each other"), and watch for his priceless grimace a fraction of a second later when he realizes it.

Another priceless Carl reaction is when he and Brian are being interviewed for Mark Goodman for LiveAid...Brian starts off on a tangent and Carl is trying all kinds of maneuvers to keep from bursting out laughing sitting next to Brian.

Everyone above that "saw" the clip of Dennis singing Good Timin' on Midnight Special somehow won't ever be able to produce the actual footage...because it does not exist. He did sing Angel Come Home on that show. There is an audio clip of him singing Good Timin', which i believe is from Radio City Music Hall. Round and round we go.

And it's funny. Always seems like Carl doesn't know whether to laugh or cry when Brian speaks, not just there but in most interviews.

All I know is that the version I heard was live, and it was soundboard, It was not Radio City Music Hall. Unless there was a second show at the same venue that was recorded.

Edit: Let me try to be more specific. I have heard two versions of Good Timin' with Dennis singing lead. One was an audience recording, and the other was a soundboard. On one version Dennis screws up the words. On the other one he doesn't.

Midnight Special – April 27, 1979

This is a taping session for the TV show. At the beginning of the song Dennis says, “Hi Mom”. Then Al says, “He’s serious, she’s really out there. Audree’s out there – she is!” Dennis sings lead on "Good Timin’" then says, “Carl & Brian wrote that song. Carl was suppose to sing it but……he chickened out folks”.

Dennis sang lead on "Good Timin'" during these shows. Bootleg recordings exist of the March 1 and March 3 shows.

Songs that aired on the BB's ONLY performance on the Midnight Special in 1979...Good Vibrations, Here Comes The Night, Surfin USA, Angel Come Home, Lady Lynda and R&R Music. If Good Timin' was performed it was either in rehearsal, soundcheck, or was cut from the orig. TV airing. No video has ever surfaced of Dennis singing Good Timin'. Thanks.

I'm listening right now to the taping/rehearsal/soundcheck/outtake of "Good Timin'" for the 4/27/79 Midnight Special show. Dennis is croaking out the lead vocal.

I think I can confirm this, because I can remember hearing this as well...it may have been on a bootleg or when I was Alan Boyd's, I do not remember.  But I do remember hearing Dennis sing "Good Timin'" and I know it was from the Midnight Special taping because there's another part where Carl asks Dennis if he wants to do a bumper (all the other band members had done one) and Dennis says something like, "nah."

Folks, there IS a high quality line recording of Dennis singing the lead on "Good Timin'", as described above (with Audree in the audience).  I believe that is from the REHEARSAL for "Midnight Special", but as Jon stated, they did NOT perform it on the actual show (trust me, I watched the original airing and taped it on VCR, and replayed it numerous times over the next several years).  I did read somewhere (probably the Add Some Music fanzine) that "Good Timin'" was rehearsed, but not performed on the show.  And yes, Dennis sang the lead at Radio City Music Hall, but Mike took over for the Easter Seals Telethon, probably b/c Dennis was a no-show.  STILL can't understand while Carl wouldn't sing it! 

And is there actually a version with BRIAN singing lead on "Good Timin'" (other than this solo shows of the past ten years)?  If so, WHERE and WHEN was THAT??

I, too, taped the original Midnight Special with The Boys back in 1979 on my old RCA VHS recorder, so I know which songs were broadcast that night.

So then then we all agree that the premise of this thread about "seeing" Dennis sing Good Timin' on You Tube...or in a documentary ...or on Midnight Special was in error? I'm glad.

Problem is, all I have is an audio clip - no video. I never argued the video point because I know what's out there, complete with dates and locations.

Now, anybody wanna see my video from the 70's of Dennis singing the lead to "Help Me Rhonda"? Or the other one (for the ladies) from 1974 of Dennis streaking across the stage? Or the one of him telling the Nixon joke?

I thought I had a board recording of Radio City Music Hall '79 somewhere in my piles of tapes and discs...not gonna sift now. Hey Ed Roach...you were there...give us some insight.

I think 80 or 81...? If it was the latter, probably did it because Carl was gone.

I looked through my audio stuff, and the 1979 shows I have don't include "Good Timin'" sung by Dennis. I've had this recording of Dennis (with Al & Carl with Audree in the audience) on a Dennis Wilson comp since the early 80's. If this is indeed from the Radio City concerts in March, 1979, it's one of the best damn sounding soundboard recordings I've ever heard on a bootleg. If this entire concert exists in this quality, it should be released!

Also, if it's proven that this is from Radio City Music Hall in New York and not recorded with the other Midnight Special songs, I will sit corrected.

Dennis told a joke during the Beach Boys concert on August 24, 1973 at Dillon Stadium in Hartford, Connecticut. Dennis was very vocal that day, standing up front on the stage, interacting a lot with the crowd and generally having a good time. Jack Reilly introduced the band at the beginning of the show.

Richard Nixon was President of the United States at the time. Henry Kissinger was the Secretary of State. Tricia Nixon was Nixon’s daughter.

Dennis: "Hey, I’m tellin’ a joke! He (Nixon) was walking on the beach by his San Clemente home and he was walking and looking down at the sand going, “Ah poo, what next?" Ya know, and he looks and it said in the sand…..somebody urinated in the sand and it said, “Richard Nixon is a Prick”. And he was outraged; he called all his aids, called the FBI, the CIA, he called everybody in. He said, “I want a urine analysis.” (Dennis interrupts the joke with “Are you listening?”, and the crowd responded with, “Yeeeeeeeees!”). Awright. And I want a handwriting analysis within two days! So….two days later his big aide comes up and he says, “Sir, I have some very bad news to tell you." He said, “The urine analysis….it’s.…well.…it’s Dr. Kissinger’s urine. But the bad thing is…..it’s in Tricia’s handwriting”.

Huh huh huh huh huh.       Huh.

So, OK. There's the urine in the sand, but what does that have to do with handwriting?

Jon, that Dennis quote above is a perfect reason why I'm not one to ask about songs from those shows...  That week, (which turned into more like 2 weeks at The Plaza), was a total mad-hatter, down-the-rabbithole adventure in the Apple with Dennis.  Christine was along for the ride; in fact, she blew the floodgates open, and laid the city at our feet.  We had round-the-clock limos, so Dennis spent a bunch of times in Brooklyn, eating with my parents & spending time going through the room I had grown up in - it was virtually untouched, since I'd left & gotten married at 18.
I have memories of my brother, sitting at the Radio City pipe organ with Brian during rehearsals, of Dennis dedicating a show to my Mom, ( and calling her "Mom"), as my parents sat in the audience with their granddaughter Brianne...  But my memories also involve trying to keep Karen Lamm invisible on another floor at The Plaza, the fights at The Garden, with Dennis' Golden Glove champ, the early morning TV interviews Dennis so memorably did(!), and so, as far as songs, I'd love to hear the tapes, too!
