Title: Songs/lyrics Brian wrote by himself Post by: punkinhead on September 11, 2010, 03:34:52 AM We all know Brian loves to collaborate with others on lyrics, but really, you'd think a lot of the feelings he had in ideas for writing a song, he'd have a lot of impact on the words, but who knows. Really, I just wanted to make a good sized list of songs that Brian, by himself, wrote without any help from others. In thinking about this, I started with the Love You era, particularly, the second half. Also, with Adult Child not being officially released, it's hard to tell who helped on song credits, but then again, we can only assume based on the lyrics themselves, if they sound all Brian-y.

Title: Re: Songs/lyrics Brian wrote by himself Post by: Nicko on September 11, 2010, 05:50:11 AM Lonely Days is very debatable isn't it?
Also, it's surely possible that Landy contributed some lyrics to the Love You songs and other stuff from that era. That claim was made in Brian's autobiog anyway so it's entirely possible that it's untrue too. Custom Machine as a Mike credit doesn't it? The rift between the naive and naughty joy on Love You, and the psychobabble that came later is too deep for me. Title: Re: Songs/lyrics Brian wrote by himself Post by: bgas on September 11, 2010, 06:28:33 AM Most of the "hooks" in the Love You lyrics were written By Mike Love; however, since none of the songs were really hits, he didn't claim them.
Once other artists really get into the songs, redo them and make them milllion sellers, Mike will have his next lawsuit. I felt like I read it on a couple different sources about Custom Machine, I was unsure too...i'm sure someone will correct me Title: Re: Songs/lyrics Brian wrote by himself Post by: punkinhead on September 11, 2010, 06:40:16 AM Lonely Days is very debatable isn't it? The rift between the naive and naughty joy on Love You, and the psychobabble that came later is too deep for me. The lyrics on Love You only spell out one author to me: Brian Wilson. I could just spit out 5 different lyrics randomly, and it's just a known fact, 'hey, that's gotta be a BW lyrics.' haha. I remember in his autobiography (been a few years since I read it), that songs he wrote with Landy early on, the Beach Boys wanted for later albums like the TM Song & Johnny Carson. Title: Re: Songs/lyrics Brian wrote by himself Post by: punkinhead on September 11, 2010, 06:51:50 AM right right ;D
I was just tryin to straighten things out about Landy's early 'contributions' to Brian's music, if there was any, thus why I didn't really put down any song that had his credit (BW88), even though they took the credit off for the 2000 re-release. Title: Re: Songs/lyrics Brian wrote by himself Post by: punkinhead on September 11, 2010, 06:53:34 AM btw, the songs that have question marks beside them are in question, if I could just get a yes or no about those, I'd be happy to cross em out or leaven em.

Title: Re: Songs/lyrics Brian wrote by himself Post by: summerinparadise.flac on September 11, 2010, 10:37:01 AM Do we know that Baby Let Your Hair Grow Long is his? Seems odd for Brian to write a lyric thats such a consciouss throwback to an older song.
Title: Re: Songs/lyrics Brian wrote by himself Post by: Wirestone on September 11, 2010, 10:53:27 AM Brian was asked about BLYHGL in 88 and said he didn't make the connection between it and Caroline, No at all. He thinks long hair is sexy. So Tony picked up on it for PS, and BW later wrote his own song about it. There are some alternate lyrics for the song that are a rejected Landy rewrite, I believe.
I'm pretty comfortable crediting Brian with sole authorship on Love and Mercy. Landy seems to have written an extra verse, but it wasn't recorded. Brian wrote at least some of the lyrics on Melt Away, too. More recently, three additions: Walkin' Down the Path of Life Believe in Yourself Good Kind of Love Title: Re: Songs/lyrics Brian wrote by himself Post by: Mikie on September 11, 2010, 11:33:47 AM Landy seems to have written an extra verse, but it wasn't recorded. It wasn't recorded in the studio, but it was recorded live. And how do you know whether Brian or Landy wrote it? Title: Re: Songs/lyrics Brian wrote by himself Post by: Cam Mott on September 11, 2010, 11:39:15 AM I think the reason there were no LY tunes in Mike's lawsuit is because the suit was only about songs where Brian and Murry colluded to deny Mike his rights on songs published by Brian and Murry as Sea Of Tunes. Sea of Tunes had been sold to Irving by LY time and I believe the group had been their own publisher for some time before that [presumably not cheating themselves].
