I don't know what to make about this one, but:

Carl Wilson in February, 1972 concerning Smile:
"I was working on the tape of 'The Old Master Painter' and somebody put the tape out with the garbage by mistake. It got shredded into a thousand pieces. I had to go out, find it, and put it back together again. It's OK now, but we've made safety copies of everything, just in case, like the 'Fire' suite. These old things were done on 4-track tape and they're very fragile."

That statement is not very funny at all. But what can we read into this? How much really got destroyed? What's missing? Can I pull my hair out now?

No doubt he's joking. The real goodies is the news of the safety copies. At least THEY won't turn up missing.

If it's early Dennis we're talking about, it'd prolly be a barber. But if it's 1969 and beyond, it's gotta be a salon; no barber I know would deal with the volume of that kind of hair.

Jay Sebring used to do the band's hair in the early 60s. Another Manson connection for those that collect these things.

Through his connection to Dennis I have got sucked into the whole Manson Family saga. One of the most sickening yet compelling real life stories of all time.

Me too.  After "Helter Skelter" I recommend Tex Watson's "Will You Die For Me?" (the whole thing is available to read for free online).  Talk about creepy.     

Thanks. I will return the favour and recommend a film by Jim Van Bebber called "The Manson Family". Not for the faint of heart or 100% accurate but still worth a watch.

The Manson Family is outstanding, as are the two workprint versions under the title Charlie's Family.  I highly recommend checking out the documentaries Manson and Inside the Manson Gang.  Both filled with original, shot-on-location footage of the family during the trial.  Tons of dialog in Van Bebber's film is taken verbatim from the family themselves in Manson.  Fascinating stuff.

Ya gotta read Ed Sanders' "The Family". It goes way beyond Bugliosi and into what actually might have been going on (think drug deals, Hollywood porn) and, from what I've heard, the U.K. edition has extra stuff cut out of the US printing.
Also, there is a three book series called Sinister Forces by Peter Levenda, a guy who wrote some early stuff on the NAZIs and their F@&ked up mythology. The series is interesting as far as his take on American political history and psychological warfare go, and Manson is the common thread in all three books. Might also want to check out Sqeaky by  Jess Bravin. Squeaky Fromme is definitely one of the most original humans you will ever read about.

And back out on the streets from what I hear.............. watch out!

Most likely, yes. Considering the entire Family was staying at his house for a few months... I imagine the memory of that time must've haunted him till death.
