Doe on September 07, 2010, 06:37:04 AM Give the man his props, he has no problem with taking the piss out of himself. It's corny, he knows it, the crowd knows it - everyone's happy... and dammit, he's been singing the song forever. I think he's entitled.

Title: Re: Mike Love's Nasal Domination Entrance to \ Post by: DSamore on September 17, 2010, 07:17:12 AM bahahahaha. I meant no disrespect to any Mike Fans here (although as a "Brianista", I often wonder what the appeal is.) So right there, that is no matter. I shant get involved in the follies of trying to argue opinions. It shall lead nowhere.
God only knows (cue the french horn) that Brian has had some rough leads, but come on...I thought this would speak volumes for itself. People saying "Let's see how long YOU can hold a note" arguing this video is impressive in any way, shape, or form is beyond my comprehension. If that impresses you, I have no retort at all. He goes out of pitch, is very nasal, and if that pleases you, then I am glad I posted it for that reason- everyone can get enjoyment out of it. Either way, we can all like the BBs at the end of the day. Be true to your band ;D Title: Re: Mike Love's Nasal Domination Entrance to \ Post by: Mike's Beard on September 17, 2010, 10:24:29 AM He's doing it for pure cheesy entertainment value. Mike has no hang ups about being an 'artist'. That is both to his detriment and yet at the same time I repsect his "give the people what they want" mentality. I'm glad you posted the clip.

Title: Re: Mike Love's Nasal Domination Entrance to \ Post by: RadBooley on September 22, 2010, 10:13:09 AM I don't know if I should applaud him for being able to hold the note for so long or cringe because it's absolutely painful to listen to.
I still laughed, though. :lol Title: Re: Mike Love's Nasal Domination Entrance to \ Post by: Mr. Cohen on October 08, 2010, 09:04:18 AM This is borderline mystical. I could meditate to Mike's nasal chant. It's like he dilates time!
Title: Re: Mike Love's Nasal Domination Entrance to \ Post by: Don_Zabu on October 08, 2010, 11:23:55 AM You'd think if he could sustain a note that long, he'd be a bit of a better singer.
Also, now I'm wondering how long he could've held it in his prime. Title: Re: Mike Love's Nasal Domination Entrance to \ Post by: DSamore on November 21, 2010, 12:55:33 AM Mike Love holding a nasal note in a medium range for a while is about as impressive as seeing a normal man eat potato chips forever.

Title: Re: Mike Love's Nasal Domination Entrance to \ Post by: punkinhead on November 22, 2010, 01:52:56 AM i guess what annoys me the most is when those who recorded it act like it's amazing or something...because we all know those who recorded it prolly don't even know the song: Heroes and Villains.
I'm sure this is gonna come back and bite me in the rear when someone on here says, "hey, I recorded one of those clips." Title: Re: Mike Love's Nasal Domination Entrance to \ Post by: CosmicDancer on November 22, 2010, 05:28:08 AM I don't know if it's true at all, but when I saw Mike and Bruce a couple of years ago and they did this same intro, it sounded to me like there were two Mikes singing the line. It definitely sounded as if the live Mike was being propped up by a track of Mike singing the same thing just in case he couldn't hold the note and to make it sound stronger. Again, I have no proof of that, it just sounded odd to me.
I'm not trying to bash Mike in pointing that out. It was a great show and the band was awesome. I respect Mike for his contribution to the band and even for his "give teh people what they want" approach. It's not my style, but it's a valid perspective. Title: Re: Mike Love's Nasal Domination Entrance to \ Post by: punkinhead on November 22, 2010, 07:11:23 AM speaking of Mike/Bruce arrangements over the years, I just feel sometimes they need updating.
Example: It's almost the same concept with the 'Be True' intro; the why do fools intro. Sure, it's good and cool, but I saw them do it back in 2002, and they still do it. Now I know I'm gonna get yelled at because of the 'giving people what they want' argument we all experienced earlier, but to me, I feel like a setlist needs to be updated or have new ideas/jokes/arrangements. That's why Brian's shows are better, each year, the setlist is a bit different. But this all goes back to being an artist and growing...it sets the stage for a repeated history: Mike wants the basic hit recording (name any year in BB history) vs. Brian wants to grow and do different/new things...it's almost the same thing with their concerts, in my humble opinion. And since they have John Stamos, they should bring in Bob Saget to do some standup comedy for the opening act. ;D Title: Re: Mike Love's Nasal Domination Entrance to \ Post by: 18thofMay on November 22, 2010, 05:59:23 PM At the last Brian concert he did the ciggie lighter joke and the token row row row ya boat gig.. That *would* have been true about eight years ago. Compare and contrast: http://members.tripod.com/~fun_fun_fun/6-28-08.html http://members.tripod.com/~fun_fun_fun/4-12-08.html Those are the most recent times I saw Brian and Mike's respective bands. Brian's set is a greatest hits list, almost all of which had been in his set for nearly ten years at that point, and with only one song even from the album he was supposedly promoting. Mike's, on the other hand, is half as long again and contains stuff like Forever, All This Is That, Til I Die, Good Timin', Here Today, You Still Believe In Me... Brian's shows *in 2002* were fantastic as far as setlists went, but every time he's toured since then the sets have grown closer and closer to the touring jukebox formula (apart from the shows where he performs an entire album - and in those the first halves are just run-throughs of the hits). These days Mike's band is actually *more* likely to do something new and exciting, though if you go and see either you're most likely to get a thirty-song hits run-through... Do Mike and Bruce perform those lesser known here in the states? or is that in the UK? I know in the past that here in the States, we'd only get the GH stuff. Title: Re: Mike Love's Nasal Domination Entrance to \ Post by: donald on November 23, 2010, 02:09:39 PM Mike adds new old songs and rotates things a bit but the jokes and banter are stale....as seldom as I have seen them (Mikes BB Band) the same lines and jokes and gags.........over and over ....how long has he been doing that long note on his knee, and standing back up with the bones creaking and popping....?
He is not alone. I have seen John Prine do the happy enchilada joke at least a half dozen times. I guess these guys are simply not stand up comedy types but do this to get a breather and stretch the show a bit. Title: Re: Mike Love's Nasal Domination Entrance to \ Post by: Mr. Cohen on November 24, 2010, 02:10:12 AM Mike should be more controversial: "You know what's funny? Way back in 1966, you now, when everyone was losing their ego and freakin' out about - what was it? Brown acid, yeah, the brown acid. Don't take the brown acid, man. (Mike waves his hands). Seriously, guys, don't.
(Mike waits for the crowd to laugh.) Haha. Um, so way back in 1966, Brian was recording this weird little album psychedelic record called Smile... you guys know Smile, right? (Mike looks to the crowd. A few cheer.) No? Most of you never heard of it? Hmm... that's surprising. I guess it was a long time ago. Well, anyway - to get back on track here - when I first heard Brian's Smile, you know what happened? I frowned. That's right, I frowned. So, I told Brian, I told him... 'um, hey, Brian? Are you sure this isn't a recording of Frown and not Smile?' And you know what he did? He threw a tomato at me. He never did put out Smile, but a couple months later we released 'Heroes and Villains'. It debuted at, I think, 40, and then dropped to 200 the next week. It cost about $100,000 or something like that and killed our career. Now we're going to play it for you."
